Visitors from out of town and saw this restaurant when heading in town. Decided to give it a try since I needed som BBQ. Arrived at 12:30 on Friday and it was very busy. Walked in and no one said a word. Staff passed us several times until I finally asked someone did I seat myself. It was an order and pay situation and then find your own seat. Food came quickly but that's the best I can say. Get your own drinks at the fountain, your own bbq sauce, also at the counter. No sweet bbq sauce, but they have their own vinegar blend and a form of Alabama white sauce if you ask for it. My partner had the pulled bbq sandwich with a side of Mac and cheese. I had the red neck nachos with pull bbq sandwich on top. The bbq was VERY dry even with sauce on it. The nachos were almost all nachos with little toppings. Most was thrown away.. oh you do that as well. They asked for a tip as well, but we did all the work except deliver the food to the table. I REALLY enjoyed this place, the food was amazing. The ribs were so good I order another set. I had the catfish and the turkey also. All was great my favorite was the ribs for sure. Sticky fingers is not what I expected nor wanted from eating a BBQ sandwich. I now understand why there's an entire roll of paper towels on the tables... Out Christmas shopping, getting close to lunch and I pass by Moe's with a decent amount of cars outside. Casual atmosphere with dark stained wood everywhere... mostly booths, but a couple of long tables there for bigger groups. The menu is pretty straightforward with the usual NC BBQ fare. Daily specials were handwritten on a paper sack by the register. I went for the Hoppin' John and fried okra from the choices of collards, Mac-n-cheese, sweet potato, etc.. There were some beers available but I went for tea... brewed well and split half sweet half unsweet. Food arrived in about 5-10 mins hot and ready. Okra was a bit greasy, NGL, but very tasty, as was the Hoppin' John. I could've made a full meal off a bowl of that! The sandwich is where things fell apart... literally. I'd opted to have it with slaw and I think that was the mistake. Their "slaw" is cabbage that's very sweet, inundated with pickled onions (really??), and makes the whole sandwich just sticky fingered nonsense. I tried to drown that sweetness with some BBQ sauce but that didn't help at all. No vinegar to be found in this joint. Just a mess of a sandwich and okay sides. When we got here, we were told they were out of ribs after we tried ordering them. We were obviously bummed, but switched our order to the pulled pork. Not 20 minutes later, 2 guys sit down next to us with a full rack of delicious looking ribs. We would have appreciated if the cashier just told us they wouldn't be ready for a bit because honestly, we would have waited. On top of that, when we got our food, they forgot to bring out 2 of our sides. Not a problem as they fixed it, but the service wasn't the best. Most of our food was just okay -- our favorite part was definitely the wings with white sauce and fried green tomatoes. The wings were crispy and had really good flavor, but the pulled pork, mac and cheese, corn bread, cole slaw was just okay (The corn bread was really greasy and the mac and cheese had zero flavor). Unbelievable Barbecue. I am an 80 year old North Carolina native and was raised by a father who knew every barbecue place in NC. And, this place would have blown him away. The barbecue was beautiful perfection. The slaw, marinated rather than creamy (great!). The collards were delicious. Clean, properly cooked and seasoned. The service was first class. There are not enough good things to say about Moe's. I notice there is one in Durham and, since I live in Raleigh, I hope it just as good.
