We've been visiting Mission BBQ regularly since 2019, right after moving to Wilmington, NC, and it's consistently been a great spot for delicious barbecue. The food quality always impresses us, and the prices are some of the most reasonable in town--honestly, next to Costco's hot dog meal, Mission BBQ is the cheapest place to enjoy a lunch meal. As you can see from the attached photos my favorite meal is the 2- Sampler, Pulled Pork and Brisket with sides of Baked Beans and Coleslaw. These are the best baked beans that I have found in Wilmington and the coleslaw ranks high on my list. Depending on the cooking staff on duty that day there may be a slight variation in the coleslaw. My wife's favorite meal is their Pulled Pork Sandwich, and I will give her my cornbread which she thoroughly enjoys. First time at a Mission BBQ but based on the reviews, we decided to check it out. I got the Baby Back ribs and they were perfect. Juicy and smoked so nicely. Toothy and what I want in a rib. It didn't need any sauce at all but there were several to try on the table. I had to try to North Carolina Vinegar, South Carolina Zing, Kansas City Classic, Texas Twang and the Tupelo Honey Heat. My favorite was definitely the Tupelo Honey Heat. My meal came with corn bread and coleslaw. You can choose a side if you get the meal. I enjoyed the slaw. Very fresh. Could have used a pinch of salt. Not too sweet and not to mayonnaise- y. The service was friendly. Even though you pick up your food (which was FAST), there was a bus person (I think her name was Kayla) was awesome. Super sweet, asked us how our food was, if we needed anything, if it was our first time. She was very warm and welcoming. I give my first experience with Mission BBQ top marks. We stumbled upon this bbq place while driving around Wilmington. The amount of choice was overwhelming at first, but the gentlemen at the front was so kind and explained everything to us. This set the tone for the rest of our meal, everyone there was super welcoming and upon realizing we had never been there before, they even gave us free samples and a free peach cobbler! The food itself was quite good for the price. We got the pulled pork, jalapeno/cheese sausage and brisket. The first two were really good, the brisket was a bit dry. All the sides were really good (corn bread, cole slaw, beans, mac & cheese). They had a really good range of 6 sauces that covered sweet, tangy, spicy and more savory. We got to sample the regular sausage and the smoked turkey. If I went back, I would get the turkey, it was tender and not too salty. This may be my new go to BBQ place in Wilmington. I discovered Mission BBQ when they catered a friends party. I was so impressed with their meats and sides, I just had to try out the restaurant. Walk in and go to the front to place your order and get your drink cup. Note, they do have old school sodas in glass for sell as well. They bring your food out to your table. There are six different sauces on the table so sample them all. I tried the baby back ribs, pulled pork, smoked sausage and brisket. Loved the ribs, pulled pork and sausage. The brisket was good but not my favorite. Note, they have several meats they smoke here so there is something for everyone (minus your vegan friends). The sides I tried (greens, BBQ beans, and cornbread) were damn good. Service was 5 stars. They take very good care of everyone. Overall, great place and I will be back. read more

Short story This place was a 10/10! My boyfriend is a truck driver and I often go on the road with him and we're always looking for something new to try! Certified big backs. We were going to go to river 128, copper Penny or a Japanese restraint. All of a sudden we saw this and we are so glad we did! Hesitant at first because some southern bbq places aren't always as welcoming to our kind but this was the complete opposite! As soon as we walked in we were greeted with smiles and bubbly personalities. I wish I knew the man's name who helped us because I can go on and on about his customer service and menu guidance! My boyfriend got the 3 meats with wet brisket, sausage and ribs! I got the lean brisket fries, slaw and baked beans, he got Mac and cheese and a cheesecake. When I say EVERYTHING WAS AMAZING I MEAN EVERYTHING! It's going to be a long ride home with full belly's but we are definitely going to make our way back! Love this place . I am a vegetarian and thinking I wasn't going to be able eat anything but then I saw fish. I'm not a salmon eater but I saw that they smoked it. It was wonderful. The service was great . Now I had to wait about 10-15 minutes for it to be ready but I found if I ordered ahead of time I could just pick it up when I took my lunch break and walk down and get it. They have all kinds of sides to eats and try each of them they are fabulous especially eating and living in the south. I love the inside how clean it is and the people and how it all organized. When you walk in it not loud like most restaurants which was amazing to me. Plenty of seating and very organized... Very nice place to eat. We ordered takeout for 5 and we each had different meat, sides. dessert and they got it all correct! The food was good. The baked beans were probably the best side of all we had. The banana pudding is not the "real" banana pudding, cooked with meringue, but A for effort. You must have it if you serve BBQ. Overall good food, good service, and we'll eat there again. This is where I go when I want to feel at home in public. The amount of passion and appreciation Mission BBQ has for our community and, specifically, our service members and first responders, is incomparable. Every inch of the walls in this place has remembrance and appreciation memorabilia for first responders in the area and beyond. There's feel good country (or holiday, seasonal) music playing and the environment as a whole gets you in the mood to love America and her people. Located on College Rd right next to Home Goods, TJ Maxx and AC Moore, this Mission BBQ is my go-to when getting errands done. I cannot stand shopping, most the time, but knowing I get to look forward to the sweet staff and juicy pulled pork sandwich always seems to get me through the errands. I've tried pretty much everything on the menu and don't really have a favorite, per say, it's really just based on my preference that day. The sauces here really get me! I'm not a carolina vinegar BBQ person so it's nice to find a place with a wide variety of sauces on every table. My go-to sauces are without a doubt the Memphis Belle and Smokey Mountain. For sides I'd recommend the cornbread and the baked beans - very Southern of me, I know, but they just give a full array of flavors and textures in combination with the meats. Don't believe me? Test them all out, they're right there on the table in front of you for that reason! They have a typical soda machine here plus an ice bucket full of bottled beverages. Everything at this location is kept in pristine condition, from the condiments and beverage station to the bathrooms. The food is hot and ready in minutes and there's plenty of seating for small and big groups alike. The parking lot is part of a huge plaza and I've never struggled to find something close to the entrance. Mission BBQ does catering and events, and on Veteran's Day they give out free meals and cake to active and retired service men. I really love this spot and will forever recommend them. read more

I've dined here several times now (and at other locations). On my most recent visit, I ordered the half rack of BAY-b-Back Ribs, which is a perfect size lunch for me. The meat is fall off the bones oh-so tender! At the table are six squeeze bottles of various BBQ sauces. I sampled all of them. I only put a small amount, as I don't want to miss out on the flavors of the meat. With the ribs came fries and corn bread. This place will remind you how much you love America. Throughout the restaurant you will find quotes, badges, pictures, and memorabilia from service members, and first responders. There's a warm hometown feeling when eating here and the staff will reinforce this with their friendliness. The food is the cherry on top! Pretty good lunch spot. We were working in the area and decided to try some BBQ. I got the smoked turkey sandwich with a side of collard greens. The turkey was really yummy; great flavor. I wasn't crazy about the collards, even though I usually love most collard greens. My favorite were all the BBQ sauce options sorted by region. The smoky mountain sauce was delicious. It was with great surprise that they play the National Anthem at noon and everybody stands up, salutes the flag, and sings along. It was a unique lunch experience. read more

Ate here last Friday? Came in right before closing for a quick sandwich. There were a few people there, but they weren't busy. It took them some time to figure out I was waiting for service. Ordered the sliced brisket sandwich which is about 50 cents more expensive than the chopped brisket and baked beans. They had it ready in minutes. Brisket sandwich was good except the bun wasn't toasted and the meat was very fatty and the bark was so thick that it was difficult to get down. The baked beans were terrible. I've had baked beans out of a can that were better. They exchanged the beans quickly for slaw which was delicious!!! Tried to get a drink, but one of the employees was taking her time refilling the sears craftsman cabinet so I had to wait for her to finish before getting a lid, straw and sweetener. I've worked fast food restaurants before. A normal person would have offered to get the customer what they wanted out of the cabinet, but she took her time. Then I had to go back and ask her for sauce, because I was given none and there was none on my table. Maybe she thought I was being a pain in the ass, and u could tell she was irritated until she realized there really was no sauce on my table. As I left, I went to the ladies room and passed a young man with some cleaning supplies coming out of the ladies room. He didn't have a mop and there were no signs saying wet floor. I went through the door and I lost my balance and almost fell. There was an overwhelming smell of bleach and every part of the floor was wet. I should have turned around and left, but my bladder was too full. I shuffled to the stall and almost fell about a dozen times. One of the scariest moments of my life and I've done some pretty scary things. I escaped unharmed, but traumatized and let the manager know what had happened while the fellow who had left me in that mess looked on. Normally I would say that I would be happy to give them a second chance, but City Barbecue is coming soon. Will probably just go there when it opens. read more

I came here with my daughter today so she could have some pulled pork. The restaurant itself was very clean and has really great military decor. There are several different sauces to choose from for your meats. The cashier Austin was so sweet and helpful. One other lady came to the table and she was extremely nice. The turkey was not that great and I wasn't that impressed with the BBQ. The cornbread was average. I like what this place represents but I don't think the food was excellent. Incredible food and atmosphere. When you think the brisket and pork is the best they offer, you take a bite of the chicken and ask yourself what explosion of tender, flavor just happened. As good as the food was, the hospitality and welcomed feeling you receive while there is a rarity. A special shout out to Meghan Royal. She took the time to check on us, strike a conversation and explained the history of Missions Bbq and the restaurant locations. When she found out it was our first time there, she made sure we didn't go without sampling a few of their special items.
