This place was exciting to me when it first opened as I am from Texas and am a big fan of all styles of BBQ and feel knowledgeable about most of them At first, it was quite good, however it has consistently dropped in quality over the last few months to the point of being basically inedible. Thought I'd give it one last chance and picked up a Pulled Pork Sandwich and Not A Sloppy Joe both to go. The pulled Pork was disgusting, all burnt bark and what little meat was tender enough to chew was over salted to the point of going straight to the trash. The Not A sloppy Joe which was to have three distinct meats was a blob of slop that looked like it was put in a blender served on a bun that.had disintegrated in grease. Obviously, management has changed and or is indifferent. No stars would be too many for this place. read more

I ordered the pitmaster nacho, I requested the sauce on the side, but regardless, this is the worst presentation for a nacho in my life! I sent it back, asked for a sandwich instead. I recieved no apologies, no questions why and no compensation. I actually paid more for a nacho, than the replacement sandwich and after sitting through drive through for over 20 minutes, it wasn't worth it. The restaurant wasn't busy. Sausage was just ok - nice heat level Sides: Southern style green beans were excellent (salty, but that is expected) Corn pudding was the most mid item on the plate - not good but not bad. Showed up at 11 AM opening time, but there were already quite a few people eating inside. They have a drive-through and you can order online or through their app. If you sign up for the app, you can get five dollars off your order. They have specials today (9/25/24) for their 25th anniversary and a special of $.25 pulled pork sandwich for the month of September (Can't be used with the 25th anniversary specials). Ordered the turkey sandwich, sausage sandwich, full slab of ribs, and sides of corn pudding, and potato salad. My favorites were the sausage sandwich, ribs, and potato salad. The sausage sandwich came in a Texas toast and the ribs came with two pieces of Texas toast on the side. They both were flavorful, especially the rib seasoning. Potato salad was creamy with small chunks of potatoes and boiled egg, and small pieces of diced celery. Turkey sandwich was okay, didn't have a smoked flavor. I wouldn't get it again. It came plain so you'll need to get sauce from the sauce station or ask for sauce, if it is to-go. The corn pudding was good, if you're not familiar with corn pudding, it's like a sweet mushy muffin texture casserole with corn. Also got to try a sample a side of green beans with bacon. It was good, if you like southern style green beans. They used Kentucky green beans, the flat wide type, and is slow cooked until it's almost mushy like. My order was to-go and they did not include utensils or sauces. They have a sauce station with multiple choices, but they were no lids there. They did have 4 original sauces (sweet flavor, thick texture) packaged in to-go containers at the sauce station though. They had a sign to ask for to-go sauces at the counter, which is inconvenient or someone that does not know the process and is in a rush. After using the app, I received a reward through the app for a free side. Likely will be back again if they keep on having good deals. read more

Love City BBQ and I do wish it was in Leland like it shows on here, but it is not. Everything I have tried so far has been amazing and I love their Tuesday Baby Back Rib special. I ordered delivery today. It was quite a bit of food we tried. Some of the best bbq I've had. The brisket was perfect. Pulled chicken was so succulent. The smoked turkey was heaven. Corn pudding was top tier - I loved the bits of "chewy corner" I got - ya know like the corner of a fudgy brownie except corn pudding. The ranch was divine. The best ranch I have ever had. The Nashville tender was juicy and crispy even after delivery which was impressive. The smoked sausage was just okay. The ribs were alright - tender but lacked flavor. Chicken wings were good. Perhaps because it was delivery, they were a bit dry like jerky, but did have good flavor. Baked beans were decent - a bit too sweet and saucy. I had more sauce then bean or brisket in my bite. Not so favs were mac-n-cheese - there was no sauce whatsoever. It did have bits of cheddar, but there was no actual sauce or flavor. Green beans were fair: might have been better with a spoon cause maybe the flavor was in the juices ya know? I ate with a fork. Chocolate cake was so disappointing but I'm sure I had a bad slice because I could taste the potential but it never arrived at such. It was very dense and appears to be moist but my slice was extremely dry and a bit crumbly. Exp date said today so maybe it was an old batch. Same goes for banana pudding. You could taste the potential but it died at old aftertaste and texture. I would def come back. Maybe in person next time. Maybe fresh it would be a 5 star. read more

After reading the reviews, I was a bit hesitant to even try City BBQ. However, I'd signed up for their emails, and they sent me $5 for my birthday, so I ordered the Pitmaster Nachos to go. First off, ordering online/via the app is super easy. You can customize whatever you want (I did, and it was correct), and select when you want to pick up. I arrived, clicked that I had arrived, and waited about 5 minutes for my food. The gentleman that brought it out to me was very pleasant. When I pulled it from the bag, I was so impressed with the size of the nachos! HUGE! It smelled so good that I couldn't wait until I got home to try it so I had to carefully avoid making a huge mess while at red lights. It was delicious! The pulled pork was super tasty, the queso was warm and tasty, the red onions added a great flavor, and the chipotle ranch was super yummy without being spicy (I'm a spicy wimp). I probably should have only enjoyed half of the portion, but I ate it all with no regrets. I definitely want to try more! read more

I'm originally from Ohio and city bbq was one of my aunt's go to spots to use for outdoor parties. The food was always very good so I was happy to see one open up down here. I haven't gone inside yet, both of my orders were done through the app and I used their curbside pick up option. My first order was the original pulled pork sandwich with hush puppies. The pork was juicy and flavorful. It was heaped onto the sandwich and every bite was delicious. I went with the original bbq sauce which was a perfect complement to the pork. The hush puppies were also very good. Nice crunch and flavor. The next time I went I was a little disappointed in each item. I ordered the lolos pulled pork. This is a vinegar based marinated pork topped with coleslaw. Something in this had a spicy kick. I'm not sure if it came from the pork or the coleslaw. I didn't like it though. Also this pork didn't seem as juicy. Most bites were kind of dry. This time I tried the sweet bbq sauce which was very good. As a side I ordered their corn pudding. This is something I make at home and love. Theirs was quite bland. I added some salt to it, which helped a little but I think I just don't like their recipe for this item. I also have had their peach cobbler which i hated. It was very bready and the peaches didn't taste peachy. Idk. It was not for me. Finally I ordered a sweet tea which was definitely a northern sweet tea not a proper southern sweet tea it was slightly sweet but needed a bit more sugar. The newest and latest best place to eat. The service was unlike no other. Big Al, the GM took time check on us and how the facility was. The floors were clean the food hot. The employee Robert also went out his way to serve us and was prompt with customer hospitality. Wanted to like this place! We don't have extremely high expectations for bbq and sides and all items ordered still failed to impress. We did enjoy the corn pudding and mac and cheese. (Those were the best!) But the Nashville hot chicken sandwich was so hard that my husband couldn't even take a bite of it and immediately tossed it in the takeout bag. It was weirdly rock solid! Comparatively the brisket was edible, so it was ok, if graded on a curve. Ambiance inside was pleasant. The team was very nice. Not sure what's going on with the food this time around but hope they figure out the kinks because we'd love more fast casual options like this in Wilmington! I will say the parking lot is a normal sized parking lot and you'll survive as long as you don't have an 18 wheeler lol. Thought we would give city bbq a shot. The menu is extensive for bbq. We do love smokehouse and usually order there. Results: the sides are 1/3 cup. I was shocked to see the tiny containers. They were kids meals , as we were trying them out, but they forgot my daughter's fries so for $5.99 we got a tiny drink and 1/3 cup Mac and cheese. Baked beans were scorched and un edible, I like smoke and baked beans I tried to eat them but the flavor was very off putting. Corn pudding was okay lacked seasoning and seemed to have been sitting in a hot well for a bit to long. Prepackaged bbq sauce was also a miss for me it did not pair well with the sandwich at all would like to see a home made sauce. Pulled pork was piled high, but the sandwich was plain with only meat and bread. The pork was extremely salty. Never had that in BBQ before. With the coloration from the smoke and all the salt it was like eating country ham. I couldn't eat it. The fried okra was good. Couldn't try the tea because it was out and never refilled. The dining room was small and noisy, but nice. There is also outdoor seating. If you go, download their app for $5 off. The sandwhich was $8.50, much too expensive. I wanted to dislike City BBQ, I'm from Texas and a brisket snob...so nothing compares to Texas, UNTIL I tried their brisket! Holy MOLEY- it was not just good, it was great! The meat was done to perfection, not tough in the slightest, and on par with Buc-Ees! The drive thru staff was amazing, friendly and courteous...it's refreshing to have amazing staff that is all about customer care! I'm glad you guys are in the neighborhood, I'll be coming back for more brisket, Dirty Bird and everything else on the menu! If you haven't eaten at City BBQ yet don't waste your time. They advertised barbecue chicken but it's just fried chicken and they give you a cup of dipping sauce. It was double date night and we decided to go to City Barbeque. It doesn't matter if you like NC, TN or TX BBQ, you will like this BBQ. The food was great. We asked for lean and there was "No" fat. The sides were wonderful from the okra to the beans - you can't go wrong. Definitely try the Corn Pudding - everyone loved it. Josh, the manager was so friendly. He made sure we got what we asked for and exactly like we asked. Everyone of the staff there was so nice. You could tell they all worked as a team. If you haven't tried it, you need to.
