Super knowledgeable staff (Wayne) gives you info you would never know to even ask about, so you can make the very best choice. He has incredible knowledge on materials, fabric, wear, socks, etc. He even wrote out a "care sheet" so we can get the most durability out of our shoes. Best service I've seen! I have been a loyal customer of this store for years, but don't plan to return. I recently brought in a pair of new shoes that had been gifted to me, but in the wrong size. I assumed they could exchange them for my size without impacting them negatively. (They carry those exact shoes.) They (quite rudely) refused. Customer service is important, and I don't appreciate the employee's attitude and dismissiveness in this matter. I would normally try to support a local brick and mortar store such as this one, but I can easily buy shoes online with better customer service. Very disappointing. read more

I went their to buy shoes for my daughter for her mission an had a problem. One of two pairs I bought had problems. When I tried to return the bad pair they complained that the bad pair of shoes had been worn and were not eligible for exchange or refund. The return policy is terrible. However, if you want to made to feel like you're criminal and want to be stalked by a sales representative then this is a great store. Downside... Modern Shoe no longer offers shoe repairs. I found the sales people to be very helpful and not pushy at all. The store was clean and organized and it was very easy to get the help I needed. Plus they were so patient with me while I mulled over which Danskos to get. I have always enjoyed the atmosphere in Modern Shoe and I wish them the best in their future as a brick and mortar store in quaint downtown Provo. I stopped by today looking for a particular hiking shoe. I was greeted and engaged before I was halfway through the store. Very attentive staff. As a rule, I try not to leave low ratings for small businesses because I know how it can affect their ratings. However, I found this store to be unwelcoming and the employees either racist or just generally very rude. My mother and I walked in and there were two employees talking by the register (no one else was in the store) both of whom glanced up, side eyed, then proceeded to ignore us the rest of the time we were in the store even as we walked around the whole place and asked questions. This store stocks Birkenstocks, Chacos, and other shoes. My mother and I were both wearing Birks and each of us own a pair of Chacos so it seems like we would be potential customers who would be likely to buy something (which we were actually planning on doing!). Instead it was an extremely awkward and uncomfortable time for both of us. I went into this locally owned business that has been around since 1940's and I could not be happier with the service I was given this last week! A young lady named Kim helped me out and she was so knowledgeable about all my questions I was asking her, but she went above and beyond mine and my wife's expectations of what great service is, and you don't find that a lot very often now days. We ended up leaving the store with more information not only about shoes, but about inserts as well and the benefits they bring to your health because of her knowledge and communication with us. Some people ask, why a brick and mortar store in this internet age? I'll tell you why--thoughtful curation for those people, like me, who can get overwhelmed by too many minor options. Everything here is of good quality. They don't carry any junk, just quality comfortable shoes. The styles tilt toward the "sensible"--you won't find glittery stilettos here--but in additional to long-lasting classics (I bought my missionary shoes here and my first real job shoes here) they also have little euro-tinge details. I got these Merrill's boots that look straight out of Frozen. Like I said, the store is curated well. It does help to know your European size but if not someone can help you. Another thing I found surprising was how many beautiful bags they had too. Buttery leather from Argentina. We're definitely coming back for them! read more

I want to give five stars to the salesperson that helped us today at Modern Shoe. His name is Jorge. I had some particular requests for some Tevas in certain colors and he went to great lengths to help me try to find them. They had sold out in the store, so he took the time to find one of them at the warehouse and ordered it for me, to be picked up soon. The other was a Teva exclusive, not carried at the store, so he showed me how to find it online. Sometimes I feel like after you've reached a "certain age" salespeople no long think you're relevant or a good potential buying customer. Jorge was REALLY great with us and spent a lot of his time. Modern Shoe is the best, you can find any shoe, boot, sandal you want. They also have work boots with or without steel toes. They can fit you with custom fit shoes. When I had a problem with a leg length difference after a surgery. I was able to pick my shoe, they could tell me right then if it was a shoe they could build up the soal. Since they have a shoe repair in the store that does excellent work, I could leave me shoes there, they would build my shoe up, i could pick up in a day or two. During the time I had the leg length discrepancy, people with the same problem would approach me asking where I got the shoes and who did the work. I referred 100s of people to the store, plus my Orthopedic Dr wanted to know where I had the work done. Im sure he refered a lot. Modern Shoe also has a lot of good sales. read more

The employee who helped me was friendly and professional, and I'm really happy with my purchase. There was no pressure to buy, just good advice and offers to help! We have been going to Modern Shoe for some years now. We liked the people who ran it and the service they gave. We liked the sales and discounts they gave from time to time. Now there is a new owner. He moved the store next door. He is nice and friendly when you talk to him, but we have noticed now for several months that his prices are skyhigh from what used to be even with his discount incentives to buy more. Either he is over extended with his remodel and trying to pay off the construction loan or he is just greedy and wants more $$ because I cannot understand how he thinks he can charge over $100 or more for slip on deck shoes. And this isn't for dressier shoes or athletic shoes. Hoka's are now closer to $200 than the $100 they used to be closer to. You have to really think about whether buying a deck type shoe for $100 - $129 is worth it or do you want to have $ to buy food, clothes, pay bills, etc. We don't think it is so we have decided to not buy there anymore. Sad, because we like their shoes. They just aren't worth the cost they are selling for in this economy when things are so tight and people have much more important priorities than buying one pair of simple causal shoes for well over $100 and athletic and dressier shoes closer to $200 or higher...especially when so many are cutting corners to just make it from month to month. read more

I've heard all of these while I was in the store or went there for that purpose myself. I even watched an old guy hobble in and pull out a holstered gun and ask them to fix his holster -- it looked like something out of a western movie. It is amazing to buy shoes from somebody that actually knows something about shoes... I mean, really knows something about shoes and can walk in the back and ask the repair guy. I am a huge fan of shoes with tread. I work at Brigham Young University on the grounds crew and my summer boots and winter boots and shoes have had work done on them. i buy the higher quality kind, I see it as an investment. When the soles go out or the loops pull out, I take them here. When I get a hole in a nice pair of shoes, I take it here. They can do everything and it is quality work. If you're in doubt, take the item in question in! They will tell you how they can resurrect it. For those looking for high quality shoes, they have reliable footwear at very good pricing. read more

I took my Frye Americana boots to them to get the top of the boot stretched a bit. I was a little nervous because the boots originally cost just under $700. These guys did a FLAWLESS job and had it done the next day and only charged me $7.99! Would DEFINITELY go back to them if I needed anything done! read more

I think I found the place where I'll be buying shoes while I'm living here in Provo. I needed some steel-toe boots for work and was given a voucher to go get some here, and I had a wonderful experience! I'm pretty self-sufficient and try not to be a needy customer, except when it comes to shoes. I generally wear a 13 wide (sometimes larger depending on the shoe), and have flat feet, so I need to make sure I am getting the right product for me. I walked in and was warmly greeted by the employee at the desk, and he then proceeded to help me out for probably over an hour. They don't carry too many pairs that come in my size, but they were very knowledgeable and had great advise about that which they do carry (they can also special order shoes they don't normally have on hand). I probably tried and retried about 5 or 6 different pairs of boots before ultimately coming to a decision, and they entire time the employee helping me was very patient. He was also able to help another customer equally well while helping me. He then recommended to me a quality pair of orthotics that have served me well so far. The only issue I encountered was that I noticed some of the stitching on the boots I selected had come undone right as I was able to buy them. I informed the employee and he ran to the back to switch the bad pair out with a good one. They also have a large selection of shoe care products and accessories, such as a pair of shoe trees I bought while was there. This place was more than what you would pay at Walmart for sure, but being a small shop, they could be a lot more expensive than they are. I haven't tried the shoe repair yet, but from what I've observed so far I won't hesitate. Overall, I am very pleased with the service rendered and will be recommending them to anyone I know who needs new shoes. read more

I went in because my fave sandals came unstiched during work and the strap broke at about 5 wearings. They didn't have appts until Saturday but when the clerk saw my predicament he offered to help. (I was wearing the broken sandal). He was able to sew it up and reinforce the strap of the other shoe in 10 minutes and it only cost under $5.00. I bought work boots from these guys through a Voc rehab voucher, they told me to wear them around the house to decide if they will work so I did so and determined they wont work for the job i do, So i went to return them they had nothing to accommodate mine and sandblast jobs so they were to order me some for 80 dollars more out of pocket which was fine. a week later they call and tell me they can't order my boots so i said ok what can we order then told me they would refund the money to my work, I told them it wasn't paid through my work they argued that it was so I said just refund the money to me and I will buy them elsewhere," unless" they can just order me boots that will work so i said give me a list of their vendors and i will look online, they did so and agreed. I found some and called the next day to have them ordered and Tony the owner answered and started accusing me of trying to commit fraud slandering me and offending my good name! This place is an unbelievable rip off. I ordered shoes that arrived weeks later. I originally ordered a different color but they called and offered whatever color they had left, not what they advertised online and took my order for. I said ok. They sent a tracking number that showed the shoes were delivered to a different address. I applied to get my money refunded but they responded that they accidentally given me a wrong tracking number. The shoes finally arrived and anti-climactically they didn't fit. I returned them. They then claim they didn't get their original box back and won't refund my money. I packed them in all the same packaging that they arrived in but somehow a box disappeared. Crazy phone calls take place. Unreasonable customer service. How can I control what some random employee did with a shoe box? I imagine said employee wanted to keep the shoes and was in the process of lifting them. The manager would not refund my money. So I was out the money and also the shoes due to the original box disappearing. I asked for the shoes back. They sent them. I have $100 pair of too small shoes. I read reviews and decided to take three pair of shoes in need of new soles, heels and repair. I found the cost (mid $200s) to be excessive for the quality of the repairs. Restitching repairs were shoddy. The right and left shoe fit differently after the repairs to one of the pair of shoes. While I didn't discuss the repairs directly with the cobbler, I advised the young lady that waited on me that the cobbler make the call on whether or not to repair damaged stitching. Based on the result, the repairman should have advised not to bother or to send the shoes back to Allen Edmond for refurbishing). I gave an additional star because the quality of the heel and soles were decent. I cannot recommend this store for repairs based on my experience. read more
