Today, Max's son, Dr. John Cowan operates the pharmacy. The drug store maintains its historic and independent charm. The pharmacy counter stands as it did 50 years ago, serving customers. The first six prescriptions filled in 1885 hang framed on the wall surrounded by vintage pharmaceutical bottles. The pharmacy provides vaccines as well as fills prescriptions. The store also sells a great selection of Hallmark cards and gifts, local postcards, candy and nuts. While the photo shop within the drugstore closed years ago, a collection of vintage cameras is displayed on shelves. The Cubbard is a popular breakfast and lunch spot in the rear of the store. The food is down home delicious. You see the same friendly faces every visit. Cowan's is an amazing locally owned business and worth a visit. There is free street parking.

I decided to treat myself to new hair color for my birthday. I've gone there before and gotten a very nice copper base with a few blonde and purple highlights thrown in. I always get the multitone color. I did not have my normal stylist today, that's true. However, the stylist I did have was actually supposedly a higher ranked stylist. A master stylist. My color information was in the computer. All she had to do was look. However, she told me that she had another client after me, and couldn't do multi tonal hair, and that she was not happy with the fact that I had too much gray grow out. She instead put a green colored dye on my hair and told me that it would turn to the copper that I had selected. It did not. In fact, my hair is almost black now. And when I expressed that, I was unhappy with how it looked, Alejandra told me that I had too much gray, that she had to put some special treatment on it because of my gray (she did not. It was only color applied in stages), it was my fault for letting the gray grow out so far and because I did, it was the reason why I have a ring of darker color all the way around my head She did throw in some purple highlights. But she threw them in where she felt they needed to go, not where I wanted them to go, and also because the hair is so dark, you can't tell. They're black. The staff at the front of the store was wonderful afterwards. They did refund my money and told me how to get it fixed. Referred me to a few other stylists within Ulta that should be able to take care of it so I have an appointment tomorrow at a different location. I wouldn't avoid the salon at Ulta in Whitestown. I would just be very very sure that if Alejandra is your stylist, you stay very aware and ask a lot of questions. I trusted that she checked the computer and would honor her work. I was wrong.

The scents were strong, really strong, and co-mingled to the point of confusion. I noticed variability in the bottles of liquid hand soaps. Some were clear, others cloudy and some had rings of solids at the top, all within the same product. I asked about this, and the clerk said that some ingredients settle out and you just have to shake them up again. Hmmmm. That sounded like a formulation problem. But I wanted to try a bottle and found a scent that was not too overwhelming. But they didn't have it, so the clerk said she would make one up for me. It took only a few minutes and the soap went from clear to cloudy. She said it would clear up overnight, but it has been four days and it is still cloudy. I don't mind it being cloudy, but the scents are just overpowering. I'm sure other people might like the strong scents but if I'm looking for natural products, then I most likely want no or subtle scents. It's cool that they offer soap making parties where participants can make their own products. I like that the soaps are made fresh. But in general, the quality control is lacking and the scents are just too strong for me. Prices are high with a single soap coating over $9 and bath bombs at $8 each.

I hate to do this but I have to. Last week I had an old wound flare up in severe plain. Three…read moresurgeries. One a botched extraction. One more where the same dentist opened it up to "clean it out" and after six months of constant pain (because I was made to believe it wasn't real) I finally saw a third dentist who said root tips were left in and I needed surgery immediately. Had the surgery the same day and had two abscessed roots removed. Both the dentist and surgeon said it was absolute malpractice. My gums were shredded took months to heal. I've always had pain since then. Mild to moderate. Nothing I couldn't handle since I have severe lupus and can take some pain. Last week became sick and had severe pain in that spot. Decided to go to Lee as he was highly recommended. Turns out another root was left in there. Ground down, but there. Prescribed antibiotics and pain meds. Called every oral surgeon in the practice he referred me too. They all said it would be a month wait but if the dr called they could get me an emergency appt. he wouldn't call. I finally raised hell and got one today with a "montes" off 20th street. Showed up and he walked in laughing and stated it wasn't infected. It's common to leave roots etc. I said no sir I've had thre dentists one a surgeon day it was malpractice. I've dealt with the pain for two years but since last week it's unbearable. He chucked "you're telling me you've had an infection two years," that's not what I said. He laughed at me the whole time and even said "why would the last surgeon leave that root in there if he actually removed the other two? I don't know, ducking ask him. He insulted me and laughed at me and said he wouldn't help me. Went back to Lee today who had a sudden change of heart. He said "I talked to dr Bailey" I said I didn't see a doctor Bailey. Well why not. Because this place was the only place to see me within a month and I'm in severe damn pain. "Well he said it's not infected. Sounds like fibromyalgia. You should take gabapentin." Are you kidding me? I have lupus. I can take pain and I already take that meds for DDD and it works. So if this was it why wouldnt I be pain and fever free. "Well you should see your primary care." So you're going to send me out of here in severe pain today when last week you seemed super sympathetic. Yep. I will not tolerate people telling me pain is in my head and questioning me like I'm a child or some sort of drug seeker. I can't take I buy so yes, I need something a little stronger and if I say somethings not right ITS FUCKING NOT RIGHT. I WILL NEVER GO BACK. Treating me less than humor and implying the pain is all in my head. Unacceptable. Do better.

They will also call you a couple of days before to remind you of the Appointment time and location (which is important as they have two different convenient locations). I went there for a cleaning and the dental service team told me what they were doing before they did it. They asked if I was comfortable multiple times and were overall friendly and gentle with the care they were providing. Check them out if you are in need of ANY dental services!
