I called at 9:30 in the morning to schedule a full set for 3:30 in the afternoon, after I asked if they had availability to which she said yes. She proceeded to say no to the service. That was the end of that conversation. Since there are limited nail salons in the small town of fernley, modern nails was my last option since I knew it would be more of a possibility to get in, their website states walk ins welcomed. I have gotten both manicures and pedicures here, and have been satisfied each visit. I had an appointment at nine at I walked in at 8:45 because the OPEN sign was on! Not expecting to be taken back to have my nails done.My appointment was at 9:00 so I figured I could sit and wait till she told me to pick out a color. I did not get her name. She did my nails two weeks ago in 15 minutes. I have never had gel nails done in fifteen minutes so that tells you the kind of service you get at Modern Nails in Fernley. Then when I came in too early she started complaining about me coming in so early when two weeks ago she was so nice and ok with me picking a color out then she was complaining to a customer of hers about customers showing up early and expecting to get in right away. I did not expect that at all! I was in shock that she would do that so I told her cancel my appointment that they had me scheduled for a Pedicure not my nails also and I walked out she started yelling sorry the owner is not here yet she is doing my nails and it was 9:05. I am unsure of the service. I assume walk-ins are okay at most nail salons. I contacted the business twice around 10 a.m. before making an appointment on the same day. The lady claimed that she did not have a 2:10 p.m. appointment on her schedule when I walked into the salon. She asked what I needed to get done. I told her I wanted to have these tips or fake nails removed. She told me to pick a color, and she will have me seated once she is done. I was in no hurry to have these nails removed but not have my my appointment for 2:10 p.m. was disappointing. I waited for an hour before I was seated at one of the stations. Not even a week later they started to fall off, I was so upset and I went back and the receptionist was trying to have them fix it that day but the guy said that I needed to come back tomorrow. I went in for a fill yesterday and the lady was half way through my nails before she told me she didn't have powder. At this point I had no choice but to go with the gel polish, which I hate. There are some imperfections in shape and length, but I'm really not picky. She asked me several times if it looked right and I just said yet. Some people may ask for more specific stuff. Bad service! Took my 87 year old mother for a pedicure, which I made an appointment for. When I signed her in, I even wrote "pedi only". They tried to upsale her for a full set of nails also which I never asked for or approved. I even left my phone number if there was a question or concern while I was next door picking up a couple of things from the grocery. When I came back to check on her 15 minutes later, the owner of the shop was putting a full set of nails on her, and no pedicure had been done. During my first visit, Jim did my pedicure. He did a great job. He spent a fair amount of time on the massage, which is my favorite part. My only complaint for that visit it that I chose a color from the China Glaze brand of nail polish and it did not last long. This lady (ellen i think!!!) was not interested in how I liked my nails, what i wanted, very impatient 2-3 mins to pick color there was no conversation except to sternly tell me to relax. I went in to get a mani/pedi, I was really disappointed. I have issues with clean...wasn't impressed. I brought my own toe separators, files, and foot scrubber, nail polishes, she was like confused?? I explained that I had a "compromised immune system", that is the reason I bring my own stuff....wouldn't you know she leaves me after soak and goes to get the razor.......I didn't need the razor and I wouldn't use it anyway, I don't want to get cut and get an infection. Never go here! My friends and I decided we wanted to get our nails done we were there from 4:20-6:00. My friend both got there's done, and wouldn't do what we actually wanted saying they had no time. But took others in front of us and gave them what they wanted. I wanted to get a new set to get a new shape and they told me no. First time today called for an appointment and my girl did a great job. I got the basic pedicure and manicure, and upgraded the mani to a gel. It came to $55 plus a 20% tip it is a high price to pay but im happy with my nails. It didnt get 5 stars because the salon isnt that pretty, and they use a straitup cheesegrater on your feet which works but is weird maybe its a special nail salon tool that looks just like a kitchen tool. When i went to wash my hands in the sink there was that cheesegrater and foot scrub sponge thing in the sink. they are one of the cheapest in Fernley. they also do great work. i can't always afford to get my nails done being on a fixed income. but when i can or somebody treats me i always go here. i also always ask for Jim. he is kind, patient and very careful with my fingers. i have fibromyalgia and need a special touch. he is always nice, asks after my health, family and such. he isn't rushed and always does an excellent job. i would recommend them anytime. read more
