Starting with the two good things I experienced. 1. The place looks great, love the aesthetic it's swanky and chill, low lighting and comfy seating 2. They have Michelob Ultra on tap and we agreed it was clean and tasted great. That's the end of the good stuff. This place is expensive and the tacos are tiny and bland as hell. I tried one carnitas taco and I don't know who made it but it's called seasoning. The ones I made at home are far better don't waste your money on this crap. Disgrace to good Mexican food. The rice was also bland, please do better. To pay a ridiculous amount for 3 tacos I could eat each in one bite is just a no for me. Go somewhere else. Go authentic. The service wasn't impressive either. Sat at the bar and the place was empty and they still couldn't get it together as expected. Lots of hype for this place and it was a disappointment. read more

Waffling between 4 and 5, Crystals drink making ability and friendliness pushed it to a 5. Already a long week on a Tuesday and wanted to wind down, great place for that. The cocktails are outstanding, Crystal the bartender made 2 of the best drinks I've had. I ask for an Old Fashioned, that wasn't too sweet. She it perfectly for me, no simple syrup but a little bit of the cherry juice. The jalapeno margarita was dang near perfect. It had an excellent spice kick and sweet to sour ratio was perfect. My meal ended up super cheese forward. I had the queso fuego as an appetizer. The queso flavor was great, go ahead and add the fresh tomatoes if you like and then the flavor adds to the dish. The queso needed heat. I asked for fresh jalapeno and that did the trick. I was deciding between 3 entrees and Crystal recommended the smoke reserve mac. It was super good. Basically a huge mac N cheese dish with smoked carnitas. These nice wedges of cheesy garlic toast came with it as well. Super rich and super good. Tonight was my second time coming here, and it definitely did not disappoint. The first time I went to brunch with a friend and this time it was dinner. Both times the waiters were great, manager (maybe?) checked on us to see how we were enjoying everything, and of course the food was amazing. Tonight I got the Lobster Chile Poblano and my husband got the Outlaw Tacos. During my last visit I got the Chilaquiles. Highly recommend going! What a pleasant surprise! I had not even heard of Mode X but we were looking for a place to eat after a movie and since it's right across from the theater, we decided to give them a try. It was early on a Sunday evening and there were only a few patrons there. Hopefully they have better business during the week. We were greeted by the host as we were walking in the door and he asked if we preferred a high or low top, which is nice to be given that option. The restaurant is modern and higher-end feeling than I expected. Of course, with that, the prices are a little higher than your typical Mexican restaurant. I had the Tropical Glazed Chicken with orzo which was very good. The serving size was on the small side compared to a lot of restaurants but it was quality over quantity. Beautiful restaurant at the Greene! I'm so glad they've taken this space over from the former Bar Louie. Walking in you're immediately struck by the gorgeous bar and soft pink lighting. We had reservations and were seated immediately. Our waiter, Jamil, was phenomenal all night. I tried the Strawberry Kiss cocktail with some chips and queso to start off. Loved, loved, loved that drink! And serving the drink all lit up was so fun and bougie. The queso was delicious. Jamil even lit the queso for us when he brought out. Our entrees were great. The Mode X shrimp was a bit spicier than we thought but overall very tasty. Menu is a bit pricey but everything is so good and made from scratch. Can't wait to come back! read more

We walked out of a movie and thought we would give Mode X a try. Greeted by a friendly staff it was an odd time on Sunday night place only a few tables. I grabbed a smoked old fashion very tasty and nice presentation. I asked the waiter for a recommendation and followed her advice for Carnitas taco. I ordered carryout mahi tacos (3) that was supposed to come with their "signature rice and beans". More on that later. They honored my request to not cook the fish in seed oils (canola, soybean, etc.) which I appreciated. The tacos themselves were okay. I can always appreciate homemade tortillas but the mahi tasted a bit fishy when it usually doesn't at other places. They gave me a side of rice but seemed to forget the beans which was disappointing. A beautiful space that we chose for brunch on Sunday. There was no crowd, no wait. The waitstaff was absolutely lovely, and the food blew my mind. I had the Buenos Dias Burrito, and my husband had Eggs Benedict. The food was served quickly, and my burrito was perfectly crisp on the outside, with delicious chorizo, black beans, and eggs inside. It was served with sour cream, pico de gallo, and an outstanding avocado sauce. My husband's dish was perfectly plated with thick slices of Canadian bacon and the most delicate, creamy Hollandaise sauce. Location was pretty slow on a Monday night so it was easy to get in. We started with the chicken nachos, which are not labeled as an appetizer but is a good value. The plate is huge and you get chicken, cheese sauce, fresh toppings and guacamole. Chips were crisp and it was very filling. My husband and I shared the steak enchiladas and the shrimp. Both were very good. The cilantro rice was perfectly cooked and mixed with the sauces on the plates, was very yummy. All of the meat was bolted perfectly. We took half of both home for lunch the next day and they were just as good reheated. Inside is very spacious and probably gets loud with a lot of people. Went tonight and had the worst service ever. Were with another couple - first the seating was weird! They gave us 2 round tables for two that were side by side and wedged against a wall... so all 4 of us had to sit kind of in a row (like at the bar) which made communication odd. After about 10 minutes a server came over and asked if we wanted water. She came back with water and asked if we wanted any appetizers. She never introduced herself or anything and we honestly thought she was just getting us water and apps until our real server could take care of us. When she came back 15 minutes later with our appetizers, we realized she was our actual server. We had to ask her if we could order drinks! Everything was slow and she didn't check in on us much at all. We would have ordered another round of drinks and probably dessert had she come back. But the worst was at the end - I had a pretty full plate of food because I talked a lot during dinner. My husband had a small enchilada leftover as well. I asked her for a box for my tacos and rice and we told her we could also put my husband's enchilada in the same box. She took my plate and came back and gave my husband an empty box! She forgot that I wanted my (full) plate of food!! She apologized and offered to go get my dinner back from the kitchen - I declined. Probably should have asked for a manager but we were with business associates and I didn't want to be "that" person. But overall very embarrassing experience and we will not be back. read more

When I say that this was the best meal I have had in a long time...I mean it. I was born and raised in the Dayton area and this meal was up there with the best of all time. When it comes to food, I am very critical. I appreciate fresh ingredients and simple recipes. Not pictured are the ceviche we ordered as an appetizer and their watermelon margarita. All of which were spectacular. We ate at the bar and the service was great. The steaks were perfectly medium rare, as ordered, and seasoned beautifully. I was so full by the end of the meal and still ordered the churro cake. I dream about that cake now. So crispy on the outside and soft churro batter on the inside. Sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and paired with vanilla ice cream that compliments the cake. Crystal was our server and made excellent recommendations and was such a pleasure to deal with. This restaurant is in the old Bar Louie and I really love the dark and mysterious vibes! Feels very stylish, upscale, and modern. Reggaetón music is on point. Even though Condado tacos is right on the other side of BD's, these two places are totally different in terms of cuisine. Mode X is a modern take on authentic Mexican dishes. Condado is an Americanization of "tacos". They're both delicious. But very different! Here, I had the tacos de birria. Flavor was amazing. They didn't skimp on the meat, so these ended up being consumed more like an enchilada with a fork and knife. Husband had the Enchiladas Suizas and I actually liked it even more than my tacos, and I really love birria! The tomatillo crema flavors were so fresh, and the fire roasted corn added an amazing sweetness. Definitely order this dish! We didn't try any tequila or margaritas this time, but they have a very large high end selection, with flights to try lots of options! They also have a large selection of beers on tap, and other unique cocktails. This place could easily become super fun spot a on the weekends for late night happy hours (like Bar Granada) I'd love to see that! read more

We just happened upon Mode X as we were leaving the theater tonight. It looked so inviting. We were greeted pleasantly by everyone. The decor is upscale but minimalist. We sat at a high hat table and it was very comfortable! The service was great. The food was so very, very good. The menu was varied with Latino food. We had a carnitas plate with a poblano base with small potatoes and pork. We also had the Portuguese bread appetizer with a melted cheese dip, flavored oil and whipped butter. We brought Tiramisu home to eat later. This is the place for a special date, if you're just visiting in the area, or for a quick bite or dessert. By the way, the Tiramisu was excellent. I am so happy that this place took over the old Bar Louie location at the Greene! They put their own spin on the interior decor and it looks really nice and clean. We were welcomed by smiling faces and had no wait, but there were plenty of patrons filling up the restaurant. Our server Olivia was wonderful! And they were full sized margaritas (size of a Bad Juan)! The birria tacos were tiny but delicious, and I don't eat much so it was a good amount. The guacamole was fresh and tasted pretty good. The chips were good - not too hard or too crumbly! The pasta had some spice to it, and my bf really enjoyed it. Overall the food was fresh, flavorful, and delicious. I prefer this place over Sueño any day! The cocktail was good, like a mule of sorts. I enjoyed the margaritas, with blueberry being my favorite. They aren't super strong, but they taste good and did the trick. We also received a free shot of tequila from a server walking around with samples! Overall we had a great first experience here, and it seems to be the only location and possibly family owned..? (Not positive on that one.) We want to go back asap! Went here for dinner tonight. The restaurant was pretty nice on the inside. They have a traditional set up of silverware, a plate, and a water glass. The glass was a bit dusty and dirty. At the end of dinner we got to meet a couple bees. The wife named them Charlie and creatively Charlie jr. she released both of them safely outside. For the drinks. I had a draft beer. It was fine. My wife had a passion fruit margarita that was very good. To the food. We started with chips and queso. Was neat that when it came out they put a flame to it. The wife got a chimichanga. The price was $16. That looked to be worth the price. It was huge and seemed to be cooked well. I had the Mexican burger. They only cook it med well. There is a huge bacon wrapped jalapeño on it. It was ok just the bacon was not nearly done. The burger was so thin. Not worth the cost of $17. At most worth $10. The fries were very good. We've been here a few times since Mode X opened and, for dinner, it has gone downhill unfortunately. We love it here because Mode X' s food has always been well above a place like El Toro but priced well below a place like Sueno. The menu has been changed and reduced. It's now more like a Condado Tacos or a great place to sit at the bar, enjoy the ambiance, sip some good mescal or tequila, and have a small bite to eat. Then hit the road before the bill gets too high. It's not great for dinner anymore. The prices are too high and the service is too bad for what you get. For our Saturday dinner, we were sat without napkins or silverware. Server was slow to arrive. Drink orders were slow to arrive. Drinks were both overly sweet. Gone from the menu were the drinks we used to like. Our $38 Molcajete was just plopped down on our table without any tortillas or even a serving spoon to serve yourself. More waiting. We got tired and just started eating it straight out of the bowl. The bottom of the Molcajete was super-greasy and it was mostly carne asade meat and some shrimp. Didn't see much ribeye strips, pork belly, or chorizo. It came with the most miniature portions of rice and beans. No, they don't have a kids menu. So our kids quesadilla was $13 and huge. Bathrooms were dirty. We saw our server once every fifteen minutes. The total bill was like $111 for a Molcajete, order of tacos, a quesadilla, and two average drinks. Previously the experience matched the price tag. It will be a long while before we come back. read more

The fries were amazing, not frozen, well made and not greasy. Crunchy too and soft on the inside. Burger also comes with a stuffed jalapeño wrapped with bacon. Ate it too fast to remember what it was stuffed with but so good! Do yourself a favor and walk right pass Condado and come here. Service was excellent too! Well sized patio too if you're looking for a girls or guys night out and want to enjoy the summer heat with a great Latin background and music. We've been waiting for Mode X to open and we weren't disappointed! We sat at the bar and our server, Eliza, and the manager, Brian, were so friendly and fun! Before I even ordered Brian gave me a complimentary shot. And they both made recommendations throughout the evening. The chicken wings were amazing! Fried but then touched to the grill for a very satisfying crunch but still juicy tender meat. The guacamole and queso were both great, especially if you add a little hot sauce. Flautas and Tacos Tradicionales were also delicious. I do wish they had a spicier hot sauce that wasn't chipotle flavored though. We combined the regular salsa with the spicy chipotle salso and that met our heat needs but sometimes you aren't in the mood for chipotle. The salsa verde was also good though. After a kind of disappointing avocado margarita (the avocado dampens the brightness of the lime and tequila leaving an underwhelming and unattractive drink) I had a craving for a mezcal paloma, which both tasted good and looked beautiful. However the only mezcal I was offered was $23 a shot. I'm pretty sure that a tequila bistro probably has different price point mezcals but, like I said, it did make for a great drink! Next time I'll inquire more about selection. I think we came in on a Wednesday evening and I was surprised it wasn't busier. My guess is when people discover this place it will pick up because the patio is great and the bar is huge. From the service and friendliness alone I'd go here over Condados any day. read more

Don't be afraid to try it, you will not be disappointed. Everything down to the tortillas are made in house. I was optimistic after reading the menu and seeing so many options marked gluten free. The menu is very contradictory. Meals are marked gluten free in one place, but then the items in it that are listed separately are not marked gluten free. I asked our server about separate fryers for menu items and the poor guy was shocked. He tried to tell me they change the oil every night and free the gluten free things first. That doesn't even make sense for a restaurant that has hours of people ordering. And no restaurant changes their oil every night, too expensive and wasteful. The "house made chips" are not made at that house. Those were chips that are mass produced and shipped from a warehouse. The server told me they're gluten free, but do they even know for sure? I ate a few, but I'm not confident so that's all I ate there. The queso? Not homemade, fresh or anything special. I'm thinking generic velveeta watered down with a little jalapeño juice - then lit on fire for a distraction. My daughter ordered the carne asada. They described it as the steak with " garlic cilantro potatoes and street corn". So it was corn, with French fries. I guess on a technicality they're potatoes, but we were expecting maybe potato chunks or roasted mini potatoes. The meal was marked gluten free, but the fries are not considered gluten free according to the menu. And by looking at them, I am certain they are coated with a crisping agent (common) which is typically not gluten free. Overall, disappointed. I understand that restaurants cannot accommodate my medical diagnosis that requires gluten free food. However, if you are going to represent it as gluten free in highlighted words on the menu - you'd better make sure it is. So instead of getting a yummy meal, I got frustrated, ate a few crappy chips that may have made me sick (I don't feel so hot right now), and paid a premium for my daughter to eat cheap, mediocre food. To the owners, I'd change your business practices or change their menu. People with food related medical diagnoses are starting to sue restaurants under ADA laws. Look it up. read more

Tacos de birria were good but I found them to be a little too salty, especially with the provided sauce. Tacos tradicionales were fantastic, our favorite of the things we've tried so far. Service: Fantastic, zero complaints. Price: Higher than I'd like for the amount of food, but not so much so that I wouldn't come again given the quality.
