I decided maybe Virgil was close enough to try it, and oh my goodness - I understood at once why poutine is so popular. If you also hail from a poutine-less area of the world, fear not - done well, it's a great dish. The beer was also excellent. I can see why The Black Lager is Canada's most award-winning Schwarzbier. There are some really good schwarzebiers in my city, and Silversmith's is right up there with them. I also have a Nut Brown Ale, and a small size of the Motueka, both of which I would get again. They know what they are doing with their food and drink. And the atmosphere is really good as well. The old-church-turned-brewery is beautiful. I'll let the pictures in other reviews do it justice. The service was good. It was relatively busy the night I was there, but the service was still quick enough and even a bit conversational - I recall one of the bartenders worked at Silversmith in the warmer months, and travels southeast Asia in the colder months, which is pretty cool. The grounds are absolutely beautiful. They have gorgeous dining rooms, lounges, private meeting rooms and a room on the top floor called "Club 77" with a fully stocked bar and billiard/snooker table. The building was built in the 1800s. A lot of the original hardwood is still there. Each room is beautifully decorated with a mix of antiques and modern art. My favorite room is the "Crystal Room" for dining. The chandeliers are breathtaking, especially when the sunlight from the window hits them. The general manager, Archie, could not possibly be nicer. He is so friendly and truly happy to see returning patrons. He is always willing to give a brief, but informative, tour of the building to our guests. He knows everything there is to know about the history of the club. The Club has several member events each year. My favorites are Lobster Night, Pasta Night, and the Wine Festival event. The food is always made with fresh ingredients and cooked to perfection. The wine and desserts are also phenomenal! Finally, the service is flawless. The servers are polite and personable. I would definitely recommend this club to anybody looking to join a professional, but down to earth country club. Food was very good and no one batted an eye when I asked for mayo for my fries. Seems that is a Canadian thing! We tried out several new beers (we had a designated driver) and went home with leftover chicken wings (in case we got stranded on the road in the storm?)
