3 piece fish fry
Rick S.

Just an update with photos of the inside of the restaurant and of their wonderful fish fry. Our server last night was Sandy and she has been there many years. She's fabulous!

The hollandaise sauce was good, but not really enough for the huge scoop of crab...

Underwhelmed. Service was great, but the food didn't wow me for the cost. I had the Oscar chicken and my boyfriend ordered the New York Strip. The chicken was fairly good, but when they topped it with a hefty scoop of dried out canned crab??? Nope, I was turned off and very disappointed for the $19 price. Aside from me not liking my meal, I should point out that the service was excellent. We were there for my friend's birthday and our server generously brought him a small cake that was big enough for the four of us to share. So kind, but still 3 stars for the food...5 for our wonderful server.

Two piece fish fry

Consulting in Hartford was disappointing from a food perspective until I dined at MJ Stevens. Considering I have dined here three times I would definitely recommend this restaurant. Calibrate your expectations to get a good quality meal that isn't fancy but just solid cooking. Wednesday night they have a fish fry of either baked or lightly breaded cod. I have tried both and they were delicious. The two piece breaded cod is plentiful for one person. It comes with waffle fries that are piping hot along with coleslaw and the traditional rye bread. The fish needed a little more salt but I would rather add salt than it come out over seasoned. Baked cod can be overcooked and rubbery but they cooked it so it flaked nicely. One time I was craving a steak so I opted for the small filet. I got a double side of veggies and the salad. They make their own ranch which is a plus. The salad is a generous plate with fresh veggies. The steak was cooked to perfection and was at a $28 per an 8 ounce filet it was very reasonable. The place is very busy almost every day of the week so I opt to sit at the bar which always has a stool open. The bartenders are friendly and work their tails off. They must treat their team well because you can see the dedication of the workers. I did survive the great "Hartford blackout" the Wednesday I was dining there. A large part of the area had a power outage that lasted over an hour. The kitchen had to be shut down because it needed electricity for the vent hoods. They put out more candles and people started spontaneously to sing songs. Fortunately the one register was on a generator so they could still ring out tags. I laughed that I was going to make "I survived the Hartford blackout" t-shirts. MJ Stevens is a solid dining experience with traditional favorites done well with good service. The fanciest item on the menu is the breaded duck tenders but I value quality sometimes over creativity.`

An oasis on Hwy 41 N/S. Expertly appointed, very clean, huge parking lot for all the seats inside. The staff is attentive and fast - maybe too fast? The food. Diverse menu that each item is it's own. Daily specials as well. The prices? Well, let's assume MJs knows how good they are and the oasis they bring $$$. Good news? Happy hour 1/2 off apps from 2-5. Worth every penny and the short journey off the frontage road.

Sign on door says 10pm, Yelp says 11pm. We came in at 9, were turned away (grills were shut off). Won't be back.

Food was good, but the location is a bit out of the way for most people. 1 app. 2 rib dinners and 2 drinks = 64.00.

It's a bit of a wait, but the fish fry is totally worth it! I drove 45 miles just to enjoy the food and atmosphere. Great date place.

The food, service, and ambiance were all top notch - we pre-ordered with a more than generous selection of items, so food was prompt, hot, and delicious! I would highly recommend Uncle Larry's for any group or even a nice lunch in a quiet, off the beaten path location. The bacon jam burger was the perfect size and came with a generous portion of fries. If you can afford the calories, get the chocolate cake!!!

Unfortunately, the food and drinks were a big disappointment. I ordered a Mountain Dew, but it tasted like a strange mix of Sprite and lemonade -- definitely not Mountain Dew and honestly pretty unpleasant. I then tried switching to a Coca-Cola, but that didn't taste right either. For food, I ordered the Philly cheesesteak without cheese due to an allergy. The steak came out burnt, which made it really hard to enjoy. The fries weren't any better -- they tasted freezer-burnt or old, like they had been sitting for a while. The place has that dive-bar vibe, which I don't mind at all, but unfortunately, the quality of the food just wasn't there. I appreciate the great service, but the food and drinks need great improvement.

Apparently I didn't leave a review for Nuckleheadz after the one other time I had dinner there, so…read moreI had to leave one this time. I called in an order to go for a four piece cod dinner with seasoned waffle fries and cheese curds as an appetizer. Unlike so many other restaurants that serve crappy cornmeal breaded cheese curds that don't get crunchy and retain too much grease, the cheese curds at Nuckleheadz are true breaded cheese curds that get perfectly crunchy. I wish every every restaurant would serve the right kind like Nuckleheadz does, but I guess that's one of the things that makes Nuckleheadz special. Speaking of special, I LOVE it when the breading on fish has herbs and/or spices mixed in. It just gives the fish a little something extra. The herbs that Nuckleheadz puts in the batter they use on their cod (maybe their other fish too, I'm not sure) are phenomenal. I'm not usually big on cod, but I'm big on their cod because of it. Seasoned waffle fries are the king of all fries so that was a no-brainer. The weekly specials they post on social media often intrigue me and the hangover hash appetizer sounds fantastic (tater tots covered with bacon, nacho cheese, shredded cheese, and fried eggs), so I look forward to ordering that the next time I dine-in on a day that isn't Friday and I can't wait to get the fish fry again on a Friday with the best cheese curds around.

When we went, they had a nice fire going in their outdoor fire pit, which made for a nice place to gather and enjoy the night air. We did not have any food from here, only cocktails, but the bar service was fairly quick, and the drinks were good.

Bartender Kayla, (owner's daughter) has always been pleasant. This past Sunday 9/28/25 we stopped in for a drink at 5:30 after attending a Celebration of Life for a friend. We got a chilly reception, seeing as they were closing soon we were told The KITCHEN was Closed! We both ordered a scotch and club soda. Both of us said it didn't taste right. They were very faint in color and taste. When we mentioned to the owner, she got defensive and claimed "I've never been accused of pouring a short drink!" We didn't say she did. She then took our drinks and poured them in the sink saying "We're Done Here!". My husband & I looked at each and said "Let's go." that's when the owner said "I Think So! We then left!
