Ok, so Alpine Retreat was the worst experience. From the service, the atmosphere to the food. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Restaurant is very dirty / dusty on surfaces that apparently don't get used often.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was not busy and there are only 12 tables with 3 waitresses.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our waitress was an older lady who was a bit hard of hearing which is not ideal. She only came to our table 1 time and that was to take our order. I had to call her over to get another drink. Then someone else brought our appetizer. Sorry 2 times, then she brought our food and we never saw her again. The prime rib was cordy and tough. My filet which is pictured was supposed to be medium and it came well done and dry. Then my shrimp was sitting on the plate in the aujus so the breading was soggy. We only had the opportunity to tell all of this to the hostess who came to clear our plates. She did comp us our appetizer but it was too late. This is the first time we did not tip our server, ever. Should have gone to Johnny Manhattens. Ruined our anniversary dinner. Now we are home disappointed.

Second time here in the last couple of months…read more Food: As much as I love the history of this place, the beautiful woods surrounding it, and the charm of the building, I have been very disappointed by the quality of the food. Unfortunately, this second dinner was even worse than the first. The rice was undercooked, the short ribs were dry, and the scallops were gritty. I realize that, for some people, the Buy One, Get One promotion is a big draw. However, I suspect that the menu prices are inflated to offset the BOGO savings, so it doesn't end up being much of an actual benefit. My wish is that they would focus on improving the quality and consistency of the food and charge prices that appropriately cover their costs while still allowing them to make a profit. I don't think we'll be coming back anytime soon, which is sad because there is so much to like about the location and atmosphere.

Buckle up and keep your arms and hands inside this review…read more.. I was in town for a special occasion where my friends wanted to take me somewhere for a great steak dinner. One of my good friends was recommended F&H's, so that's where he choose to take me. First off the restaurant looks wonderful. Think country club, lodge, or your wealthy uncles house in the burbs...no complaints We arrived around 7pm on a Thursday night. I should have seen the red flags when we were first sat down. Red flag #1, the restaurant was somewhat empty for a dinner night. Red flag #2, the menu was a bit pricey, but understandable considering that this was supposed to be a premier steak house. Red flag #3, paper napkins and cheap silverware *think school cafeteria. When ordering, we should have picked up on the quality of what we were getting ourselves into was going to be low, when we learned that the $68 ribeye steak dinner, or any of the steak dinners were BOGO (Buy One Get One free). My friend ordered his steak well done (I know sacrilegious), and I had ordered mine medium...our steaks came out at the same time. The entrees were plentiful and picture worthy (I don't take pics of my food, I eat it!) I cut into my steak anticipating a soft, buttery bite and it was a little tough. I didn't give it much of a thought, I continued to slice through anticipating a more tender bite...nope. I tried another...nope. I tried a different side of the steak...nope. It actually got worse! I typically am not the kind of guest who complains, but in theory this was a $68 steak! This should have been tender to the knife, easy in the mouth, and full of flavor. The steak was one of the worse steaks I've had in a very long time! I couldn't hold back, so I mentioned something to the server. He was apologetic of my comments and immediately called one of the managers over to hopefully rectify the issue. The manager tried his best to defend the kitchen, and to justify that once in a while it happens, and guiltily offered to remake my meal, but stating, "well you know that it would take at least 15 minutes to remake"...I honestly was put off about the quality of the first one, and the look of my friends I was fine not eating. The manager then comes back and says, "well since these are BOGO, I won't be able to take it off the check...you'll still have to pay full price for the one"...so he then re-offered to have the kitchen remake the meal. I told him, "no thank you, I'm good", but then I thought to myself, NO! I had them make another meal to go for my friend to take home. In theory, the manager should have saved his offer, not wasted the time or food in remaking it. He should have discounted the one steak that my friend ended up eating, had just apologized, and have moved on. Now I've had a few days to ponder on it, and use the power of the internet to voice my experience. I have many friends and family who live in the area. I will spread my experience, and they will continue to spread what they had heard, and ultimately what could have been made right should have been done that night. Super easy fix...serve a delicious, well cooked piece of meat. Fix/Solve a guests/customers concern right away, no questions asked. Leave the guests/customers feeling satisfied, so that they leave happy, and the possibility to give you a second chance. My review won't prevent anyone from visiting your restaurant, but it will absolutely make them debate if it's worth the effort

I got the Head Sawyer (steak, eggs, and hash browns) with the double tenderloin option, one kid got chicken strips with fries, and the other got a kids pizza. We also shared a piece of coffee cake. I don't think my youngest was super enthused by his pizza, mostly because it's not memorable to him. My oldest liked his chicken strips and fries, but I don't know if he's come across chicken strips and fries that he doesn't like, so take that with a grain of salt. The hash browns were ok. They were just fried potato with no other flavor or add-in like onions. I added salt and pepper because they needed it. I got American cheese on the scrambled eggs and they were as you'd expect. The tenderloin was fine. Obviously not as good of a cut as New York strip or ribeye would have been. I ended up sharing a portion of it with my oldest and he ate it without complaints too. The star of our visit was the coffee cake. It was warm and soft and in every sense perfect. Sharing is carrying and I'm fine sharing with my kids most of the time, but man, I wish it had been all for me.

First time here…read more Food: It was a Friday evening, around 8:00, and we decided to try some of the fish specials. I ordered the Pan-Seared Walleye, and she chose the Lake Perch Fry. Since our entrées included access to the salad bar, we started there. The appearance of the salad bar was disappointing. I realize it was later in the evening, but there were literally salad bar fixings all over the place. Some items were mixed together, some had spilled onto the enclosure, and there was food on the floor as well. Much of what was offered looked like it had come straight out of a can. The walleye wasn't bad. However, the mixed vegetables were a pile of mush, and although I had requested the potato pancake be extra crispy, it was still undercooked in the middle. The perch fry was okay, but nothing special. For dessert, she ordered the Brandy Alexander, and I had the LemonBerry Cake. The Brandy Alexander was very good, while the LemonBerry Cake was mediocre. Service: Our server did a nice job getting us settled in. Water and drinks arrived promptly, and they were friendly and pleasant throughout the evening. However, they became involved in a lengthy conversation at another table, so getting our check took quite a while. Atmosphere: To be honest, the place looks a bit run-down and could probably benefit from some TLC. Since it was later in the evening, there weren't many other diners, and the restaurant was relatively quiet. The view of the lake through the windows is spectacular and makes it a great place to watch the sunset. I wish the food had been better. Unfortunately, this isn't a place we are likely to return to.

Service: There was an issue with our order. Apparently, it did not "print" back in the kitchen. We ended up waiting an additional 20 minutes before someone figured out what had happened. They acknowledged the mistake, apologized, and comped our drinks. Atmosphere: They now have outdoor entertainment every evening, and there is plenty of seating to choose from. The traffic around the roundabout intersection can get noisy, but I think they simply turn up the volume to compensate. A good spot for smoked meats and other sandwiches.

It is just so very good. I ordered the Panzanella Salad topped with brisket. The salad itself was excellent, and the addition of the brisket made it an outstanding choice. Our table shared an order of the Texas Twinkies. They were delicious, but definitely on the spicy side. In fact, some of us were literally in tears! So, know what you're getting. The others ordered the Mac & Cheese with BBQ Chicken, the Sloppy Joe, and the Double Smashburger. Everyone enjoyed their meals, but no one was raving about them...except me and the brisket. I tried the Smashburger and found it a bit underwhelming. The beef didn't have much flavor, and there wasn't enough char to create those delicious lacy edges that make a smashburger special. The side of haystack onion rings was very good: hot, flavorful, and generously portioned. Service: Our server was polite, but not especially friendly. Even though there were very few people in the restaurant, there were a couple of times when I had to flag them down for things like more water or another drink. A couple of our drinks, including a Bourbon Old Fashioned and a Bloody Mary, were served with an elaborate smoked presentation using a wooden smoke box. It's an interesting idea, but it felt a bit over the top. Atmosphere: I like the feel of the dining room. It's small and full of character.
