The restaurant has a very old style steakhouse charm. What used to be a hidden gem with great food has unfortunately changed with the new ownership. We went for the Saturday night prime rib special but unfortunately they were out of prime rib at 5pm. We settled for the rib eye steak, ordered medium rare which cane overcooked and the meat was as tough as could be. Chances are I will give the place another try but if not for the great service I would certainly reduce my rating. read more

Went on a Saturday night just to get the duck dinner. It was so delicious. Included a salad, baked potato, red cabbage and carrots. The wintery scenic ride to Alpine Retreat restaurant was peaceful and lovely. The restaurant bar presented as local and friendly. Our table for two was spacious, the room although busy was quiet enough to enjoy our table conversation. The waitress Eva was quick, pleasant, providing suggestions along the way. We skipped the appetizer but savored the liver pate delivered promptly to our table. The two entrees we selected were the beef roulade and Swiss steak. The meat was tender and most flavorful. The noodles served with the roulade were rich, semi firm and held the flavor. The Swiss steak was tender and held an authentic flavor, no shortcuts in the preparation. Ok, so Alpine Retreat was the worst experience. From the service, the atmosphere to the food. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Restaurant is very dirty / dusty on surfaces that apparently don't get used often.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was not busy and there are only 12 tables with 3 waitresses.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our waitress was an older lady who was a bit hard of hearing which is not ideal. She only came to our table 1 time and that was to take our order. I had to call her over to get another drink. Then someone else brought our appetizer. Sorry 2 times, then she brought our food and we never saw her again. The prime rib was cordy and tough. My filet which is pictured was supposed to be medium and it came well done and dry. Then my shrimp was sitting on the plate in the aujus so the breading was soggy. We only had the opportunity to tell all of this to the hostess who came to clear our plates. She did comp us our appetizer but it was too late. This is the first time we did not tip our server, ever. Should have gone to Johnny Manhattens. Ruined our anniversary dinner. We went to Alpine in the Fall knowing there were new owners. Waitress was inattentive and couldn't hear. Bus boy (not Andy) reached across the table in front of us to clear dishes. Food was good despite bad service so we decided to give them another chance. 12/10/25 We had a reservation for a party of 5 at 5:30. We arrived around 5:10. When we had not been seated at 5:50, we asked the hostess if our table was ready. She said it was but she thought we wanted to "chill" at the bar for a while. This practice can cause real havoc for diners with reservations after us. They were busy with a full dining room. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were seated in the corner by the outside wall. It was very cold which made dining uncomfortable. There was a fireplace but it was not lit![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Unfotunately we were assigned the same waitress as our first visit. It took almost 20 minutes to get our soup and salads.Three of the five dinners were very good. However the liver and onions were terrible. There was no flavor and the consistency was "crumbly" and unappetizing. Needless to say the service with this waitress was again lacking. Upon arrival we walked in and it smelled like the stench of stale beer after a weekend binger. We didn't know where the hostess was, but she eventually walked over and greeted us. She seated us right away BECAUSE WE HAD A RESERVATION. We sat down and within seconds our waitress came over. She was friendly. We ordered drinks and she came back in 5 minutes with our drinks. We then ordered our food. Ribs, chicken piccata, chicken Parmesan, and cod. It came in about a half hour. Ribs were fall off the bone. Chicken piccata was okay but normally it's served with angel hair pasta. Chicken parm was very tasty with homemade noodles. The cod was not fishy tasting. Made a 6:30 reservation and showed up at 6:20. Waited until 7:15 and they still had no table. In addition, there is nowhere to stand in while waiting. Cramped and uncomfortable. After a friend and online reviews told me so many good things about the Alpine Retreat, we went there for my husband's birthday dinner tonight. The food was absolutely amazing! We loved the complimentary liver pate served as we browsed the menu; slightly chunky yet smooth and bursting with flavor. As we both like bacon wrapped water chestnuts, we shared an appetizer portion of them. There were 10 pieces, hot and crisp and served with a sweet-sour dipping sauce. Delicious! For dinner, we both opted to begin with the cream of mushroom soup, loaded with good sized pieces of mushrooms; I wish the cream soup itself would have had more of a mushroom flavor, but it was very good and came piping hot. Homemade, chewy rye rolls were a great accompaniment. My husband had the 16 oz. (Queen cut) prime rib, medium rare and well-marbled, with a baked potato and raved about the flavor and that it arrived perfectly cooked. I had Weinerschnitzel, so tender and moist, with gravy on the side, and crisp-tender green beans rather than a potato (my choice!). Everything was absolutely delicious. Our server was fantastic, timing the deliveries of our courses to give us plenty of time to enjoy them and not feel rushed, and checking in just enough to make sure all was well. She explained all the dishes and was most knowledgeable about them, plus she had a pleasant personality and was attentive, despite being extremely busy. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The only complaint we had was the excessively loud noise level.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The Alpine Retreat is a small restaurant; one dining room that's rather crowded with tables, and the bar with dinner seating available at bistro tables.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The dining room has a low ceiling, and the "Alpine look" - plastered walls and wooden beams - did nothing but enhance the already noisy room to more decibels of sound than we like.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] (We both have hearing issues, and conversation is nearly impossible with excessive background noise.) [[HIGHLIGHT]]An extremely loud man was next to us, which didn't help.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]As a testament to the great food and service, the restaurant was completely packed - escalating the noise even more.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The noise level is the reason for the four star rating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] While I'm positive we'll return because the food was so terrific, maybe we'll take a 4 pm seating (the earliest) and perhaps that will be better. read more

We walked in and were immediately greeted by the bartender/Bob. He was a great guy! All of the servers, hostess and bartender seemed to have a great relationship and teamwork. This is our go-to restaurant! We've tried numerous menu entrees and everything was phenomenal! The service is outstanding and everything is brought out quickly. The salads are fresh and cold, the soups are piping hot and the main courses are always served like they just came off the grill! Went with a group of 6 others on friday fish fry night. Several of us had fish. One had a german dish. One had chicken piccata. I had the breaded haddock. Was disappointed-had heard good things but it reminded me of fish you buy in a box at the store and heat up. Another of us had cod. He was also disappointed. Two more had cod and were not wowed. And one had perch. He didn't indicate how it was. The chicken piccata was apparently very good as was the german meal. I would go back again to try the New York Strip. The warm rolls were great. So were the cheese and crackers that were on the table. French fries were good. They also had potato pancakes and a couple other choices. Dinners came with soup or salad. The ice cream drinks were really good. The dirty snowman was one of them and i loved it. Drunken reindeer was another but no one tried that one. It had fireball whiskey in it as well as chocolate something. Service was reasonably fast. Ambiance was noisy - hard to talk to others at our table of 7. Seating area relatively small with hard walls and ceiling not able to absorb any of the noise. I would try it again because i would love to try the steak and hate writing negative stuff. I like to find the good. My recommendation so far is go for the german or American food but maybe skip the fish fry. read more

Had dinner with friends for my Birthday. One of the guests had dinner in Chicago 2 weeks prior to our celebration. He raved and could not say enough about how great the food was. This is a guy with good taste who has traveled the world. He was more than impressed. Of course for me it was a fabulous night, as always. The finale was a delicious piece of Schaum Torte! This spot is a hidden gem in the Holy Hill area. Authentic German dishes, fantastic steaks, and delicious Friday Night fish fry. Engaging bartenders, gracious hostess, and friendly wait staff makes it inviting to come in and enjoy an evening out with family and friends. Large windows, in the bar area, faces the woods and allows customers to see deer and squirrels come in to the bird feeders. They have a quaint dining area with a large stone fireplace. It's definitely one of our favorite places to have a nice evening out. Make sure to call for reservations as it can be tough to walk in at get a table immediately. read more

A hidden swiss style gem in the middle of nowhere. The place has this cozy historic feel to it that I love, the staff is attentive and enthusiastic and the ribs are out of this world. Their chef makes everything from scratch and it shows. I did not care much for their clam chowder but salmon spread was so good I liked my fingers! The Alpine is a wonderful, charming and rustic spot - with delicious food. Drinks are a solid pour and service is consistently attentive. The space is small so the team needs to be in sync and communicating at all times; they seem to be a well oiled machine here. Because it's small, it often got pretty loud in the crowded dining room but that didn't stop us from having a good night and kept conversations a little close with an occasional, lean-in. On our visit, we started with Eggplant Strips and Bacon Wrapped Water Crescents - both really good the dipping sauce for the Water Crescents getting a special star. For entrees- we had the following items: Jager Schnitzel, The Whitefish, Chicken Piccata and the Calf Live w/Bacon & Onions. Not one complaint from the table and we all earned entries into the clean plate club. I had the Jager Schnitzel and it was perfectly prepared. The pork was flavorful, moist and tender. I wouldn't have changed a thing. My guy had the Whitefish and said he'd go back there just for that dish- anytime. The Liver and Chicken Piccata, although I didn't get to taste either myself, was told they were both superb. Everyone was happy. We can't wait to go back. read more

We got recommendations from my husbands friend at work who also strongly recommended to have reservations because it's not a big place . it is small we arrived 10 minutes early and were seated right away . Service was great not rushed and meal was well timed.They runs specials besides their menu well priced . We ordered the T bone steak it came just as we ordered with sautéed mushrooms and au jus fantastic flavor .
