Manuela and I agreed on an 1.5", she took off 4" and charged me the price of balayage at a different salon instead of what I got, non-foil full color. I came in for a trim and color dye, I wanted to keep my length, so we agreed on an 1.5". During my time in the chair she asked how I'd hear of her, and about other local salons I'd been to & how much I paid. I said O'Hair and I thought about $350 for balayage only (O'Hair is a non tipping salon). I was very upset to find when putting my glasses back on that she'd taken off four inches of length and decided to charge me that same $350, plus tip, because "it's a lot of work". Cutting and processing my hair can be a lot of work. I'm used to and absolutely for paying a fair price if the stylist works with me and does it well. But this wasn't done well. To charge me not your pricing, but that of another salon for a completely different service, and to intentionally cut off that much length without discussing it with me was dismissive and unprofessional behavior. It was on me to have asked the price beforehand (other salons, like SalonLoft, charge around $190 for color & cut). But that she would charge $350 simply because she knew I had paid that before is gross behavior. I do not recommend. Red flags continued: - Cutting my hair, unwashed and right out of my braid (I have very straight hair, wavy is not representative of how it actually lays) - Only spoke to me to ask about how I found her and the prices of competitors - Dropped things on my head during the wash process - Bounced the hot end of the hairdryer off my head during drying - Cutting tangles from my hair instead of brushing them out read more

I have been going to this salon for ten years. The owner, Manuela Garcia, is a wonderful stylist. She cuts, colors and highlights my hair. I receive many compliments on my hair from strangers who happen to see me in the neighborhood. Manuela is very timely; I've never had to wait for an appointment. She takes care of one person at a time. The salon is always sparkling clean. She teaches me how to style my hair so that it looks good when I style it myself. She provides excellent cut, style and color recommendations and always listens to what I want. I highly recommend her. read more

MJ Hair Studio - Business card - Hair Salons Near Me - Gaithersburg, Maryland

Manuela saved me from a horrible hair experience! I recently went to a girl who spent 5 hours ruining my hair!! I was so upset and wanted to fix it, but I didn't know where to go. Fortunately, I looked on yelp and found MJ salon and took a chance. I called on a Saturday morning to see if she could help me. She said she would take me in on Sunday (Easter and her day off) to help me correct my hair. She spent approx 2 hours to highlight, cut, deep condition, and blow out. She did an amazing job, transforming what looked like a box color hair to beautifully golden blonde highlights and a great cut! I'm so much happier with my hair and no longer have to hide it under a hat! I will be going back again!! read more

MJ Hair Studio - Before and after by Manuela! - Hair Salons Near Me - Gaithersburg, Maryland

Manuela has been doing my hair for years now. She is an absolutely awesome stylist! She colors my moms hair and it always looks gorgeous, whether she is feeling blonde or brunette. Manuela loves to test different styles for brides and special occasions on my sister, and they are always exquisite. I highly recommend her for any kind of cut, color, or style that you need! read more

AAA++++++++++++++++++++Highly Recommended!!!! Manuela was just wonderful! Haircut and color were PERFECT! She took me in on short notice as my hair was a mess. I got a great blue/black color including the sideburns which usually do not take the color in as well. She was very meticulous with the color so as not to get it all over my face, ears, and neck. Most salons are not too careful with this and are just very messy with the color. She matched the style I wanted from a pic I showed her. My hair is thinning on the top, and she made it look so much thicker by adding some thickening powder before styling which I have never got from another salon. She used this hair paste that really showcased the color and hair style. She was great with both the scissors and clippers! I finally found a local salon that I can walk to. THANK YOU SO MUCH, MANUELA! read more

Sorry, but the previous poster has obviously never stepped foot in Manuela's establishment. The salon is quite spacious and airy, steams up like a shower?? Laughable. I've been going to Manuela for nearly 10 years. There's a reason I've followed her from salon to salon. She's fantastic, friendly, and always has a smile on her face! BTW, it's a shame that Yelp's filters will probably bury my legitimate review and not the fake poster's single star review. read more

Manuela truly helped me out. My usual hairdresser was on vacation for a month and my hair desperately needed a cut and color. She took care of me on a Sunday, her day off. My old hairdresser won't be seeing me any time soon! Manuela did an incredible color and cut! Her sweet personality was great as well. I will be coming back! read more

I typically don't write bad reviews and I don't like to. But the reason why is because I was charged an extra $100+ because the owner charged me to fix my hair that didn't turn out good at all. Hair was orange, and blotchy. Said she would fix it but didn't warn me that she would charge me a lot more money to do so. To me that's really bad business. Atleast warn the client. After she TRIED to fix it and added more lowlights to drown out the awful orange and blonde- she asked me if I needed a blow dry which I thought was strange because she would just do it without asking, so I took it as a sign that she didn't want to spend additional time doing it and I felt bad so I said I'll go home and dry it. Then when it came to me paying for the service , my bill came to $400 (tip included)I couldn't believe why it was so high (I asked her why she said it's because she had to spend more time fixing it) I was shocked but at that point I was not in the mood to argue after spending so much time there. I came home and I was horrified looking at large chunks of orange hair. I've never felt so ripped off and this is the second time she did this. (She fixed it last time and it looked better) but this time it is just awful. I came back to her because I wanted to give her another chance. She used to do a great job but I don't know why it was so bad last 2 times. This last time was even worse. I just think it's extremely bad business for a business owner to make you pay extra when they didn't do a good job or warn you of the extra charges. I've never had another business treat their clients that way. Very disappointed. read more

I moved to the area in August, and I've had my hair cut 4 times since then- once by Manuela, then twice by two other franchise places, and then again by Manuela. I was pleased with my first experience, but 25 bucks was more than I was used to, so I looked for cheaper haircuts. I came back to Manuela because she does a great, predictable job, and her prices are very reasonable. Don't waste your time looking for a cheaper men's haircut- you probably will be disappointed. Manuela is an artist, a professional, and very friendly. Go to her, and she'll have you looking your absolute best when she's finished. She's pretty quick too. She is absolutely worth the extra 5 bucks or so. read more

I am so happy I was fortunate enough to find Manuela. My previous hairdresser retired a couple of years ago and I've been struggling to find someone who actually knows how to cut my thick hair where I can style it myself and it looks good Manuela did a fantastic job giving me a cut that looks really good.and I love the color also. I am definitely going to continue having Manuela do my hair! read more

Manuela was so rude and disrespectful cause I was 5 minutes late! Horrible horrible customer service! Place steams up like a shower! She is just a barber and doesn't know how to color! I'm not going back! read more

I had bad experiences at most hair salons that I've gone to so I searched on yelp and found that MJ Hair Studio had few but great reviews. Manuela, the owner and stylist, turned out to be awesome at what she does. I showed her a picture of how I wanted my hair cut and she knew exactly how to cut it and it turned out exactly how I expected. I have never been at a hair salon that provides such an individualized attention to the customer. I have received many compliments so far on my hair and it's thanks to Manuela. She likes for you to call ahead to make an appointment so there's literally no waiting time when you go in. read more
