The service was nice, the food though? Yish. The price is clearly about 20% lower than the market price since it's designed for students but for me it's not enough to justify the quality of the food. The udon noodles tasted like a combination of instant noodles and frozen vegetables. The sushi was just on the edge of being eatable. They got an authentic looking kitchen but the food.... Have a good day.

Smart Roll

The smart roll is the most economical choice here - you get 4x1/2 rolls for around $13. The sushi fish pieces aren't really fresh and you can tell. The spivey rolls were my least favorite, and the eel or shrimp was probably my favorite, although both had saltier eel sauce than I've ever had before. I would recommend going to another nearby sushi place instead, Ochatto has good sushi there for a similar price.

You can see the shiny slime costing some of it, and the hard dry appearance of other pieces.

I ordered lunch to go from here and was extremely disappointed. The sushi was absolutely not git to be sold! It was old, hard, and definitely a health hazard! I've had sushi from a grocery store at 6pm that was resher than what I was sold...and some stores make their sushi 1st thing in the morning! You could tell they washed the film off thinking I would just devour it without looking. The whitefish was dried out and hard. The tray was a complete disgrace to sushi. Fortunately I was able to get a refund via the food service I ordered through; with what I was given, if have thought they would've be or if business!

Honestly, it's nothing crazy. I used to live right there so it was a good go-to for sushi cravings. I picked it up before heading to Penn's campus and some of the eel sauce spilled on the sides in the bag during the walk. I finished it so quickly, not because I was also starving, but it was just very meager for what I paid. I was really confused with their rolls/prices because they sell one and a half rolls for 12 pieces in an order. It seems really irrelevant but I like to order more of a variety instead.

Dragon Roll, Uni (Sea Urchin), and Chirashi.

Decent Food! Walking around the streets, I happened to bump into this small restaurant. Nothing out of the ordinary but the food actually wasn't half bad. I wanted to test their freshness by ordering their Chirashi. Actually was quite tasty and the fish surprisingly was fresh. I then gave them the ultimate test, ordering a single piece of Uni (Sea Urchin). Wasn't half bad either, I've had better but it was 8/10. Then to finish the meal I ordered the Dragon Roll which wasn't too unique and pretty standard. Overall, I would revisit next time I'm in Philly. Give it a chance my friends. Cheers!

Pros: -close to campus -fast and friendly service -16 pieces of sushi and miso soup for $8.99?! (lunch special) -smart roll combo-16 pieces for $8.99 (anytime) Cons: -one meal, we had to deal with cockroaches climbing the wall next to us...for reals...**shivers**

A lunch special all veg
Erin M.

The lunch special here gets you a miso soup and four half-rolls of which you can mix and match, all for $8.95. You can't really get a better deal in a University City area restaurant for lunch. You can also order any roll on brown rice, which I requested for my lunch special. I ended up mixing up a few vegetarian rolls. Overall, they were pretty good, the tempura sweet potato was just okay, but the others with a mix of asparagus, cucumber, avocado, carrots and a pickled sea vegetable, were very good. The miso soup was hot and delicious. The location on 40th street leaves a little to be desired. I would have never guessed that this spot had such great sushi, until a friend recommended it recently.

Beef bulgogi - not very good (very dry)
Justine J.

This place is definitely not A-OK. The beef bulgogi was horrible - it was dry and pretty much nothing like a bulgogi. The spider roll was terrible and by far the worst spider roll I have ever had. I didn't even know it was possible for a spider roll to taste this bad. It left a very fishy aftertaste. The sashimi is the only thing that saves this place from a one star - At least that was fresh and the slices are generous. So if you are in University City and are just craving sushi, I guess you can go here for sashimi. Otherwise, I don't think I really want to go back.

This place is great! Love the Philadelphia roll, and the people who run Mizu are very sweet and clearly care about their sushi. :)

It's the usual center city parking situation - try your luck with street parking or park in one of the decks. This place is pretty low key but way more spacious that it looks from the outside. It's relatively "no frills" when it comes to vibe as service, very casual - definitely not fine dining, lighting is a little harsh. We got the Love boat for 2 - which comes with one miso soup and one salad (so hopefully you're willing to share or maybe one of you only wants soup and the other wants salad). The boat was ok - didn't really hit the spot in the way that I had hoped. Karaoke rooms are open and pretty loud but they sound fun. I had the rainbow roll because it had a BOGO offer, making 2 rolls only $16. However, the rolls were SMALL and basically just a California roll with a tiny sliver of fish on top. Two was the perfect amount for me and I don't eat that much, so I would've been quite upset if I'd paid over $30 for that. Aside from the price and size, it wasn't very good. There wasn't much imitation crab inside (which is relatively inexpensive anyways) and the fish on top wasn't very fresh so I ended up taking it off. The salmon sashimi pieces were also half cooked? Super weird... Maybe the food would be better in person, or if I didn't order sushi for takeout, but I probably won't be coming back here :(

We ordered the crispy chicken bao buns, crispy shrimp, general tso soup dumplings, wagyu beef, Korean bbq beef, and hamachi ceviche. We were a group of 3 so one thing that was nice was that our waiter added 1 additional skewer/bao bun for the meals instead of ordering 2 plates of them. Out of all the food we ordered the most delicious were the meats; the wagyu and Korean bbq beef. They were so tender and lightly seasoned because the beef quality itself was good. The Wagyu beef was paired with an apricot dip that was really good. The chilli crisp chicken bao was also good but didn't have much sauce, so it was on the dry side. It was supposed to have chilli so we expected it to be spicy but it was not. We all really liked the crispy shrimp--it was truly crispy. The sauce and the radish paired really nicely with the shrimp as well. The one meal we did not enjoy were the soup dumplings. When we got them they were dripping of raw dough and had no soup in them. The waiter was kind enough to replace them but we still didn't really enjoy them. I did not try the hamachi ceviche because I'm pregnant but it was also a favorite from the group. For dessert we had the mini ice cream cones. The waiter again added an extra one for us. The flavors were chocolate banana and mango. They were good, small bites. One of them melted so quickly and fell on the table and the waiter was really kind and got us a replacement. I did use the bathroom and absolutely hated it. It was unbelievably dark in there and there were weird sounds playing in there. I went in there to make sure I didn't have food in my teeth but couldn't even see. Super inaccessible, hopefully that's something that can be changed. The service overall was clearly excellent! I would recommend this place, especially if you come for the meats. It was surprisingly filling too.
