A good mechanic is hard to find. A great, honest one who doesn't bilk you for a bunch of unnecessary work and cares about the safety of your family is a guy I'd marry if I weren't a gay gal with a wife and kid! Mitch has been taking care of our cars since we moved to this area, and I feel like it would be wrong for me not to write a review for the guy who makes sure our SUV is winter-ready every November so we can go to Big Bear without getting stuck in the snow or having the windshield fluid freeze, etc. He always tells us if we MUST get something fixed because it's an immediate safety concern, or if it's something that might be able to wait but we should plan on replacing it on our next visit, so save up some sheckles. When our airbag light went on I brought the car to the Toyota dealer because the Prius had a recall notice (again) anyway, so why not have them check it out. They said it would cost a minimum of $150 just to diagnose the problem was. Took it to Mitch and he showed me where our new puppy must have chewed on some sensor wires. I took my Altima in for service and to be looked at for oil leak. Mitch called me and told me that the leak is common with Nissan and he called around for warranty and call backs. He went above and beyond to find out why the leak was happening and it was due to a breakdown of a seal in the engine that only Nissan can get to. I thank him for being honest and taking the time to look further. He told me at this point all I can do is keep putting oil in the car, so I got rid of the car. I'm writing this review because I did NOT go to Mitch's auto. I called around at about ten repair shops before getting a quote from them on an ignition switch. The receptionist informed me that there was actually a recall on the part and I might want to check with the dealer (which I did, it is under recall). TEN shops who didn't think I wanted to know I could get the repair for free. So I am not going to Mitch's today, but they will be top of my list when I have a service that won't be free. read more

I used to go here when it was "Little Engine Shop" Steve was always honest and never had to take the car back twice! Then Steve moved on, and the became Mitch's auto. To be honest, I would take my cars in there and I was charged for a repair, and then had to come back a week later for something else! this happened too often for me to be comfortable, and money was getting short for me to spend 2K on repairs every time I needed something done. Came before work with brakes grinding metal on metal. To my surprise the owner put 2 guys on it right away and they changed all 4 rotors and pads plus rear shocks within 45 min. Very reasonable and professional from this day forward I will never goto another mechanic. We went to Mitch's based on good reviews on the Car Talk Mechanics Files site. We went in for a basic tune-up--oil change, tire rotation and air conditioning maintenance--on our 2010 car with just over 50,000 miles on it. The receptionist told us, however, that we needed two new rear shocks. When we went to discuss this further and to look at the shocks (which have never shown any sign of wear), we were told we also needed new four tires. No mechanic at any point talked to us. Only the receptionist, who even took us to the car and asked us to run our hand over the tires (which are fine) to demonstrate that they needed to be replaced. Not only am I quite sure my back shocks and struts are fine, I know that I do not need four new tires. I wouldn't have been quite so offended if at any point a mechanic deigned to have a conversation with us. I will not return to this place. read more

Every time he has been honest, done a quality job, been timely in getting the work done, and very polite and friendly. Also, the prices have been very affordable. I drive an old Focus, and one day it started missing, smelling terribly, and the check engin light came one. A friend (a few months previous to this incident) suggested I try Mitch's and so I limped my car to the shop. Full disclosure: I sort of know cars and I know that Ford Focus' have a tendency to blow head gaskets which is what my friend (who was with me at the time) thought it was. We brought it in, I described the symptoms, and told him I was worried about the head gasket. Fact: Head gasket is a $1,100+ job when you include labor. Turns out it was the ignition coil. I nearly cried I was so happy. They didn't call me to tell me that, but the fact that they didn't just say "Yeah, it's gonna be a thousand bucks." won me over. I've only gone a few times (thank god) but when my car needs fixing, I come here every time. read more

I have a new go-to mechanic and his name is Mitch. I found Mitch via Yelp and liked high ratings on Yelp and close proximity to my workplace. My normally trusty vehicle's check engine light suddenly came on. I ran a diagnostic myself and deliver the vehicle and the diagnostic codes to Mitch, not knowing what this is going to cost me. A few hours later my ride is ready to go. Just a dirty sensor and nothing more serious. He charged me a super low price which I was very happy with. Its been 3 weeks and the light has not come back on. Hopefully I don't have any other issues, but if I do, i'll go back to Mitch. read more

so glad that this place is only a few blocks from me. i have a 2003 vw beetle with whom i have a love-hate relationship. my check engine light came on, had it scanned at the local AAMCO, they said it had something to do with the air system and i should have it checked out. called mitch's and they said i could bring it in that day. took it in (went for a walk down lake ave)...got a call 1.5 hrs later. he cleaned off the O2 sensor (said it was dusty), cleared the computer system so the light went off, and topped off my coolant. he said to wait and see if the light came back on (if it did that would be $350 for parts + labor) but he didn't charge me a penny for that day!! the light came on briefly, but went off and has stayed off!! they were so nice and took good care that i felt bad not paying anything, waiting for my next oil change to take my car in again. read more

They got it fixed and stuck to their original quote despite having to put extra labor hours into it to get it done. Unlike another shop in Pasadena whom shall remain nameless, Mitch's didn't do any extra unauthorized work to my car. And they didn't over charge then blame it on an accounting error. I cant speak to his repair abilities but don't buy a vehicle here. I bought a Jeep Wrangler here for 7 grand, he wasn't willing to go down on the price even though the heater was broken. He told me everything was perfect with the jeep and also stated the clutch was brand new. After leaving I noticed there was no horn (my fault for not checking, but it would have been nice if he was honest and told me upfront). The whole stereo system would turn off if I played music too loud so I installed an amp which fixed the issue $300 later. The front brake pads and rotors had to be replaced immediately, after he told me they were fine. I also noticed a large amount of heat coming from under the dash board, more on that later. Now to the dirty: Within a month the clutch went out, so I called Mitch and he pretty much said I must have been driving it wrong. I am not sure how that could be considering I have been driving stick for 4 years and never had a clutch go out! and looking back I noticed slippage in fifth gear on my way home from the shop. Instead of forking over $1,200 I decided to take on the project myself. After removing the shifter I saw where the heat was coming from, the lower boot that protects the cab from heat and exhaust was gone! After I finally go to the clutch I noticed a LARGE amount of oil inside the bell housing. A clutch needs to be completely dry for it to operate. I found the leak which came from my rear main seal, which I fixed. If they did replace the clutch this leak should have been spotted and cared for to prevent any further issues. I know the rear main seal didn't go out after i bought the Jeep because the bell housing was COVERED in caked on oil and the starter was too. I'm afraid of what else is wrong with this thing.... not cool Mitch. read more

The repairs would cost over $3,000, more than what my car is worth. I found out from Mitch that half of the repairs weren't needed and that what the dealer was charging was ridiculously high. Mitch is a bit of a cheap cars salesman. Real nice, looks you in the eyes and says "Sure we work on Subarus - sure we use Subaru parts.." Then when the axle he replaced broke 2 weeks later, I come to find he had used an aftermarket part and that it really was questionable whether it needed replaced at all...but that's another story. I've been going to Mitch's (based on yelp reviews!) for several years. But last year he went above and beyond the call of duty. The problem was my friend -- the owner of the car I take in to Mitch's -- is disabled, and hadn't driven his Saturn in over 6 months, so the battery was stone dead. When I arrived on the scene, the car was due for smog checking. But when the battery dies, the on-board diagnostics computer loses all its data, so the car was failing smog. No big deal, right? Just charge 'er up, drive 'er around, et voilà, right? Wrong! We went to multiple smog test places, even went to a referee, tried absolutely everything, driving the full drive-cycle many many times, all to no avail. Finally, I gave up, and took it to Mitch's. He couldn't find anything wrong either, suggested yet again that we drive it some more. Sure, fine, why not one more time? Of course it didn't work. By now, weeks have passed and I had to leave soon -- I was only in town for a month or so. So I drove over to Mitch's one last time and told him I didn't want to see the car again until it was fixed, I didn't care what it took! I explained the situation, gave him all the information, a temporary permit and the keys. He told me not to worry, he'd take care of it. True to his word, the next day I got a call, and not only did he find the problem (he replaced several sensors among other things), but he'd driven it until the OBD sensors gathered enough data to pass, smogged it, submitted the paperwork, everything. It cost a bit, but it was not outrageous, and he couldn't possibly have charged all the hours of labor, nor did he charge anything for smogging or paperwork or late fees.
