I had trouble finding a contractor due to demand with Covid. Whatever you do, don't do what I did! Do not enter any contract with Everett Mitchell Design and Construction! Everett Mitchell, like other reviewers say, seemed reasonable and personable UNTIL the contract was signed. Then the nightmare began. I became physically ill from my interactions with him. Work started Oct. 1. He knew I lived out of state! He knew his project had to be completed before my contract with a siding company could start! It's Oct and siding needed to be completed before Thanksgiving. First invoice demanded payment within 24 hours and said I had to sign and signature meant happy with work. Also, contract did not follow the payment schedule required by MA law - he received payments before the law says he could charge for it. Within the first few days of starting work, he had a 20% increase in the costs of an already expensive project i.e. "extra work orders." I think he knew that this additional work would be needed and deliberately did not include it in the contract. I had no choice. Then because I did not send the additional 20% check overnight he stopped work for 5 days and I did not know if he would return until 10:30 the day he returned. No work being done, construction all over the front yard, the tenants using the back door...5 days! When he changed how the work would be done because of errors caused by his inability to understand the work required (2 half posts against the house were not constructed) and the design had to be changed, I accepted that a lot less work to be done. Frankly, I would have preferred that he complete the work as stated in the contract, but at this point, 2 weeks in, I could not wait for him to be gone! I asked for the credit to be determined immediately , like he asked for extra work order and checks within 24 hours. He said credits would be calculated at the end of the project! Well, it was Everett's way or no way - the credits he provided during his "final contract audit" were, as he would say, a "joke". Everett Mitchell has no employees - everyone was a subcontractor. The only reason the project looks good is because of the skills of the carpentry subcontractor he hired. I had discussed at length that he was planning for more steps than needed to the porch - he charged me for 6 - turned out to be only 3! When I asked him how the walkway would be constructed, I found out that he had not taken into account the slope and sent him calculations showing a step would be needed to have a flat and safe walkway. Well, he demanded a change order and more money to make the walkway safe. At this point I was not going to give him any more money. So he built an unsafe walkway from the porch to the sidewalk with a dangerous slope in winter. He was constantly telling me how wonderful he is and how I was so lucky to have him to do the work. I should be "grateful." With the final contract "audit", when I was supposed to get credits, the credits were ridiculously low. I think the credits for work not completed were much more money than the small payment that he had scheduled at the end (less than $2000.) I agreed to send him more money, but not the amount he requested which was $3,500 !?! I had spent 3 hours writing up my explanation of the amount of money I was willing to pay to get this behind me - his response that it was a "joke." Then he told me he had not paid the mason (note another reviewer said the same thing.) Property owners have to pay subcontractors when contractors do not. He also said he'd put a LIEN on my property. I became so stressed that I began to become physically sick whenever I interacted with him. It was always "his" way and you are expected to be grateful. I was way out of his league. And, the sad thing is, he knows what he is doing, it is deliberate and he is happy to do it! Apparently he has been able to get away with it. Don't become the next victim! I hired Mitchell Design & Construction to gut and renovate my bathroom last August during Covid. I chose Everett over other contractors because of his innovativeness, problem solving, and professionalism. One example is I had an issue with my jacuzzi tub in that if anything went wrong mechanically I wouldn't be able to fix it without breaking down the wall my neighbors and I share. Everett was able to come up with a solution so that I can get to the motor without any hassle. Everett knew this was my only bathroom to shower in and he had the project done in 1.5 weeks! I thought I was going to have to live in a hotel for a month or so! Everett and his workers were very thorough, respectful (wore masks the whole time in a room without air conditioning), efficient, and clean. Even though it wasn't a huge project Everett treated it like it was, which I appreciated. His costs were very reasonable too despite the increase in materials these days. I look forward to having him do other renovations this summer! I highly recommend Mitchell Design & Construction for any home projects. read more

I used Mitchell Design and Construction to add around 1,000 square feet addition to our bungalow house. It was a great experience for us. While not the lowest bid, we went with Mitchell because of the design expertise. They made great suggestions to improve on our architects plan. The project was finished on time and the pricing was communicated clearly and met all my expectations. Everett has been great to work with. Even 1.5 years after the project was complete he has returned for minor improvements related to the project (at no cost and after I had paid.... that doesn't happen often)!!! read more

We hired Mitchell Design & Construction to do a major renovation to our home. It was a big and expensive project and we wanted to make sure we picked the right contractor. Everett was approachable and responsive to our questions during the interview process and this trend continued throughout the project. With a project as significant as ours, it gave us peace of mind that Everett was there and accessible. Whether we had questions or issues come up on site, with subcontractors or inspectors, Everett managed through it all and kept us informed. He also had helpful recommendations that improved the design and functionality of the home. And where he could, he offered his recommendation on costs to cut or investments to make. Things rarely go perfectly in any construction project, much less one our size, but Everett managed ours and got it done. In a tough industry, he's one of the good guys. read more

To start this review I say where do I begin, We hired Mr. Everett Mitchell for an entire 2nd floor addition in March 2011. Mr. Mitchell was very engaging and seemed to have all the right answers to get us to sign a contract that was only geared towards him.. (PS have a lawyer check your contract..it will save you later if you hire Mr. Mitchell ) The work started right away and so did him collecting the payments. Then the problems started.. He miss calculated some major structural code issues ( like getting us a set of stairs up to the second floor) and wanted us to start changing the design because he could not do math..Thank goodness the code had actually changed with in the past few years ( which he was not aware of ) and we got stairs in..Not great stairs, but they are in. That was the downward spiral of the rest of the project. At this time he had the majority of our money, and only the finish work to complete. Which was absolutely shotty. Uneven floors, uneven baseboards, plumbing issues, Fans in bathrooms that are not the correct size and still cause mold build up, Plasters that smoked in the house, Cigarette butts all over the property from his subcontractors the list could just go on and on. Let me wrap this up..We had to hire a lawyer to get Mr Mitchell to come in and finish the project because he did not want to fix some major issues like the uneven hardwood floors that he wanted us to pay for. We had to hire a mediator to make sure that the remainder of the project was completed to some standard.. A NIGHTMARE!! and COSTLY.. So in Mr Mitchells contract is stated that he was responsible for warranty items for 1 year after occupancy was granted, and we have a list of issues that have transpired that Mr Mitchell needs to fix that he has not returned for. Cracked walls all thru out the second floor, Cracked floors, No heat in the back bedroom( we think he didn't insulate my sons bedroom) so now we are heading into 2nd winter with out heat. Again the list could go on and on. Plumbing issues..Blocked Dryer duct because he put the wrong vent on( again Not CODE) I know you are exhausted from hearing my rant. Well Guess what the Warranty is about to expire and after months and months of having back and forth e-mails with the mediator trying to get Mr. Mitchell to return he has not. All I can say is I hope you read this review and as rambling as it is, and confusing you get a quick overview as to how horrific a project with Everett Mitchell and Mitchell Design and Construction can be. Please do not let his first impression grab you as it did us. He would never give you our reference on paper to have you call us, or take pictures of our house before and after. Please Please.. I have waited until now to right this review waiting to see If Mr Mitchell would do the right thing with the warranty items, and he has not. Do not put your self thru the same aggravation that we have had to endure.. It was 2 + years of our lives that we will now have to spend many many more trying to fix. read more

Everett and his team have helped me and my condo association on multiple occassions. They are always on time or if they're going to be late, they always call which I appreciate in the world of unreliable contractors. Furthermore, he is always insanely responsive when I'm in time of need (i.e. flooding) and the quality of the work has always been great! As with the other reviewer I would say where do I begin with Mr Mitchell. We hired him for a job in 2009. It was an addition plus a relocation of a kitchen. The addition consisted of a family room, master bedroom and master bath. His contract totally ended up screwing us because some of it we misunderstood and I believe that was intentional. He promised us a bigger water heater but could not deliver due to a plumbing issue so he said oh it was not in the contract and would not give us any money back. However at our kitchen table he had promised us a larger water heater. I could go on and on and on but will not. I will say it ended up that he conned us into signing a statement saying we would not sue him just so he would finish the work and that he would not honor his 1 year warranty because HE didn't want to deal with ME. I probably would not have sued anyways because I had a newborn baby and my father was dying so I was busy with other things. One thing I understand is the other reviewers cold room. Our master bath is so cold we have to use a space heater to take baths or showers and our bedroom is not very warm either. And finally to show you what kind of person Mr. Mitchell is I will tell you a major problem was our flooring. I complained to Mr. Mitchell over and over that it was not right. When the floor started coming up I remembered the subcontractor so I called him and asked him to make it right. He states that Mr. Mitchell had never paid him for the floor because we were not happy. Did we ever see that money? No. In fact I would have never known about it unless I had called on my own 9 months later. That right there speaks to character, business practices and decency. read more

i worked for this company for 3 weeks. i signed an employment contract that states we work mon to fri 7 to 3. i was asked many days to be in at 630am even 6am. we worked on roofs when there were severe heat warnings. being the worker i am i worked and did anything asked of me. the owner everett mitchell never supplied materials like saw blades or safety gear. on a friday he happened to show up on the job in boat shoes and a button down shirt to come up on the roof and start yelling at my co worker and i for doing something wrong. his foreman was the one who told us to do it like that. he talked to us as if we were pieces of trash. i told him if you wanted it done that way maybe you should have been here to tell us. in which he replied you can go home. he fired me without paying me. by law he is supposed to pay me in full upon termination. he told me my pay will go in with the payroll for next week and i will get paid on friday. it is now friday a week later i got to his office at 445 pm to find him sitting in his office he told me im not ready for you. i quietly walked away it is now 6pm he is inside with my check and making me wait. who would ever want to work for a person who treats their employees like that read more

Everett underestimated my project by 70%. Because of this, it ended up costing me an additional $8k. I would have used another design and contractor had he been more accurate. Based on this, I would not hire him again even though his people do good work. I feel like I was mislead intentionally so he would get the job . read more

I can't speak to other people's experiences, but we hired Mitchell Design and Construction for a major home addition (adding a level to a small ranch-style house) and were very happy with the outcome (project completed about nine months ago). The quote was competitive for the work we wanted done, and the work started right on schedule. The closing phase of the project did go on somewhat longer than we anticipated as the company juggled various projects, but when we needed full attention we had it. Our neighbors even came over to comment on the care and attention they took with our home during key points like the roof removal when the home was at greatest risk for rain damage. We stayed in our house throughout the addition project and the various employees and contractors were very courteous and careful about cleanup, as well as tolerant of the attention from our small children. We did have some additional costs, in some cases for changes we requested, but these were always discussed in advance, and in a couple of cases Everett or his crew noticed issues that needed attention (insect damage to framing, a missing beam) and proposed solutions, with costs attached. Overall, a very positive experience and we are delighted with our new addition. read more
