We had the walls painted and replaced the upstairs carpeting. I am in a wheelchair and was having problems getting in and out of my house despite a wheelchair ramp. They were able to build a small platform for me to get out of the house and onto the wooden wheelchair ramp more smoothly. It works fantastically and it looks fantastic. Stan was very helpful when I contacted him and he and his team may do excellent work, but be careful!! I paid him 1/3 of the proposed cost of a project, but later canceled the project. No materials had been purchased at that point and the start date was weeks away. He retained 20% of the deposit amount as a "cancellation fee" - not mentioned anywhere in his contract. $744 seems a steep penalty to pay for changing my mind. Just a word of warning - __________________________ In response - I gave you a deposit check on July 31; it was cashed that same day - for a project that I requested to begin mid to late September. On August 20, I texted you to cancel the project. I asked you if you already had the decking and you said no. On October 1, when you sent the refund, you said that it was for my deposit amount, minus administrative fees and set up time. The check's note says -20% for cancelled signed contract. Our back deck was on its last legs so we decided it was time to replace it. I did a search on Yelp to get an idea of who to contact. I settled on 3 contractors to submit bids and after some debate we decided that MKJC would win the bid. Are we ever glad with our decision. Stan was a pleasure to work with and his crew were outstanding. He gave us a great price and it was worth every penny. Stan was great with communication and flexible with us with a couple of our requests. The crew was thorough, considerate, polite, timely and very detailed oriented. They also worked very well as a team. As the team finished with the demolition of the old porch, he found some issues with water damage to the back of the house. He pointed them out and told us what he wanted to do to repair and correct the situation. We didn't hesitate with what he had to say and agreed to follow his advice. We hired this team to fix our stair railing, replace newel posts and balusters and they were able to replace everything and get it installed. They worked quickly, which we needed, but they don't do great detail work and definitely missed some key instructions I was very clear about. Its one thing to work quickly to get stairs up and running to keep kids safe, but I would expect (for the price we paid) that they would perhaps dedicate a few more hours to do quality detail work and leave behind work product that does not look sloppy. One detail in particular I was upfront about in the beginning was to ensure the end of this newel post meets the trim below. I went over it with them and we measured the height of the post to make sure it was possible. When I checked in during the project I noticed it was off so I mentioned to Stanley and he assured me it would be fixed. He even sent me a photo of it "fixed" and it was very obvious in the photo it was not. Furthermore, the glue on the balusters is very obviously visible, so it looks a bit messy, and they also left a gap between the floor and the new newel post. I also asked them if they could sand the railings thoroughly so the yellow finish is removed and once again he assured me this was done. This was not true as you can see the finish still, another example of just "yessing" the customer and claiming something was done when it was not. If you can't do something then be honest about it, dont just say yes. I was most bothered by the post not meeting the trim (first pic) so Stanley said he would send someone to fix that for me the following week. Of course this never happened. Weeks go by and we realize one side of the railing is wobbling and loose! I requested they come back to fix this and when Stanley finally stopped by I reminded him about the trim issue and pointed out the gaps on the floor. He was like "Oh yes I remember, no problem I will send someone next week to fix this." We had three appointments which were cancelled each time for one reason or another relating to his guy not being able to show up at the last minute. Finally after weeks and several cancelled dates the guy shows up to fix the wobbly railing, and I also talked to him to confirm that he would fix the gap on the floor and the trim issue. He nodded and said yes, but only fixed one of the gaps in the floor and then left with no explanation. I contacted Stanley to try and understand where the communication went off (again, these are detail issues I brought up from the very beginning and was assured they would be fixed) and he just said "I didnt send him out there to do all that, just to fix the railing. I can send someone to fix the other things if you would like." He also tried to blame the fact that the floors were being sanded? That has nothing to do with your lack of attention to detail when finishing a job. Well that was months ago and i'm not holding my breath that this company gives a damn about fixing any detail work. I was simply "yessed" to death and there was no true intention to follow through on any of the things we discussed when I was told it would be fixed. Edit: To address some of the owners responses, this is a perfect example of why I do not recommend hiring them. My attempts to get things corrected have just been met with excuse after excuse. MKJC was hired to *finish* the job, and yet the railing they installed was later unstable and wobbly, and it took several weeks to get them to come fix it. Regarding the post that was not long enough - exactly my point. It was not long enough so they fashioned an extension piece to make up the rest of the distance, yet they made it too short to reach the end of the trim! Their finishing work is shoddy and then they will make excuses to justify why. read more

I originally booked Stan for a small garage door trim project, while he was here he quoted me replacement options for my front porch and back deck since they were starting to show their wear. I went forward with both projects and his crew was able to complete them both in about a week and a half. Very happy with how things turned out, I now have stairs on my back deck and a gate to access the storage area under my front porch. Stan and his crew were terrific. Just from pictures he was able to identify some serious issues with our rotting front steps - including the fact that the entire structure was not up to code, which we had suspected. I spoke with Stan over a weekend and he was able to schedule us a few days after providing an estimate. Just based on his questions, he showed to have a high level of professional knowledge and experience. The estimate provided by MKJC was VERY competitive, but we chose Stan and MKJC mostly because we were so impressed with his responsiveness. Once he was aware of our project, he immediately sent us photos of similar projects while he put together a quote, which was detailed and comprehensive. He estimated the job to take two days, including the fact that our old footings would have to be dug out as they were not correct. Stan reached out and asked if he could come a day early, as they finished another project and had some extra time! Great! Yes! Stan and crew showed up on time, with a "let's do it!" attitude. Within two hours of starting our entire front steps were demo-ed, roof had supports and new framing was already being cut. This crew has a work ethic you don't see too often anymore and they have a great comraderie with each other. We were so impressed with the work, the fact that there were no major issues - actually, no issues at all, and again - I can't say it enough - the communication, that we asked Stan to quote for another job we'd like to accomplish in the next year. New footings were poured, deck framing replaced with 6x6s (instead of our 4x4s), the stairs were finally attached to the house, weather shield, all former wood replaced with pressure treated/vinyl, trek decking steps (which he pictured framed in and it looks terrific - no edges!) They were so careful about our new tree we planted that was in close proximity to the work area and upon completion, they left the worksite clean - you wouldn't have even known they had been there! Based on renovations/projects we have done in the past, and the project we are looking to complete next, one of the biggest turn offs for us is when we talk with a contractor and get a lot of "you don't want to do that" or offering suggestions that seem like shortcuts. On the future project we showed Stan and his colleague John, they listened to what we wanted, made some smart suggestions, pointed out some cost effective approaches and said project is completely doable. If you're reading this review, please do yourself a favor and hire a different carpenter. Anyone... really... other than Stan. I never write reviews unless I feel I can help others avoid a bad experience. I decided to hire Stan for a pretty basic project, to replace a patio sliding door for my basement renovation. My 1-star rating is really not based on the fact that he decided to charge me almost 50% more than what we agreed on (as he put it: for extra hours and 3 pieces of pine ~ without confirming with me that I would agree to the extra charges) nor is it based on the fact that I lost a whole day of work as the tile crew couldn't do anything that day (even though Stan started at 7AM, he finished at 2:30PM). My low rating is not even based on the fact that the 'extra' hours were mostly due to the chain-smoking habit of his crew of 2... every cut and every trip outside to the dumpster was followed by one cigarette... NO NO NO, my 1-star review is for the fact that after I paid in full what he decided to charge me, I asked Stan why my new patio door is not easy to open and close. The door wouldn't even lock easily. Stan and his crew were visibly annoyed with my questions, he almost snapped and kept telling me the door wasn't opening smoothly because of the 'weather stripping' and will open better in 2 years, or so.... No Stan and John, it was not the weather strip... the door needed adjustments, as did the latch. The wheels adjust clockwise and their height was not properly set. The latch was set too high, probably because they stripped 2 screws and decided to use some silicone to cover the broken screws up... I should have sensed something was wrong when I saw Stan's crew read instruction manuals from Home Depot on how to install the door... As Stan said, they installed millions of doors before so they must be really good at reading comprehension... The final result was a disaster: overcharged, almost yelled at, a day of work lost for the tile crew, 2 screws to secure the door latch broken (the latch is now secured by only one screw and probably will need to be replaced), 2 screw holes in the screen door (not sure how they got there, probably need to be covered/filled), alarm sensor in the door trim cut (which will probably cost me some money to have ADT replace). Make no mistake, Stan is not 5 stars. Not wearing masks is also not cool. read more

I hired the MKJC crew for a multipart job that involved demolition and reconstruction in my finished basement to bookend some foundation work. Right from the bidding stage, the owner Stan was responsive, professional and incredibly detail oriented. He asked a lot of questions that I wouldn't have thought about to really understand the scope of the work. The written estimate accounted for every possible detail and contingency, so there were no surprises at all throughout the process after work started. I haven't ever seen a construction proposal as detailed as the one I got from Stan, and it was a big factor in my decision to hire him. The sub-contractors that I hired for the foundation work weren't as professional as the MKJC crew. Fortunately, I had Stan as my GC. He called out the subpar quality of the finish work and we got them to come back to finish the work to an appropriate standard. By its nature, this project was going to be disruptive, and Stan was very considerate to make sure the impact was as minimal through thoughtful scheduling and efficient work.
