Worked with Stan and his team for several projects, inclusive of a finishing a basement (for use as office with space for guest room, laundry area, full bath, and new stairs; involved carpentry, electrical and plumbing teams), replacement of gutters (with repairs to flashing, soffit, rafter tails), as well as digging out two drywells and installation of French drain for collective runoff. Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend working with Stan and his team at MKJC Carpentry. Pricing was fair and estimates were clear and comprehensive; work was thorough and complete; communication and accessibility was excellent; work was efficient and timely. Our family was aiming for a particular timeline and Stan was wonderfully communicative and accommodating. We trusted Stan's assessments and advice, and appreciated his ability to field all of our questions, concerns and preferences relative to all aspects of the project in a very timely, open, and clear manner. All told, I wholly recommend Stan and his team, and would certainly work with him again if a need were to arise.

Stan's responsiveness and willingness to go the extra mile impressed me.

Thank you for your quick response. Address is still the same. We're looking to do a kitchen remodel when I saw your company name populate. I tried contacting you for months!!! My contact info is still the same.

My third time using Stan and his crew for work at my house. Thanks to the MKJC team we had a memorable summer on our new above ground pool deck. Custom built to spec for our 18' round within the usable space we had. Perfect work as always!

Photo sent to me by contractor to "assure me" the post was installed correctly. The extra piece they cut wasnt even long enough.

We hired this team to fix our stair railing, replace newel posts and balusters and they were able to replace everything and get it installed. They worked quickly, which we needed, but they don't do great detail work and definitely missed some key instructions I was very clear about. Its one thing to work quickly to get stairs up and running to keep kids safe, but I would expect (for the price we paid) that they would perhaps dedicate a few more hours to do quality detail work and leave behind work product that does not look sloppy. One detail in particular I was upfront about in the beginning was to ensure the end of this newel post meets the trim below. I went over it with them and we measured the height of the post to make sure it was possible. When I checked in during the project I noticed it was off so I mentioned to Stanley and he assured me it would be fixed. He even sent me a photo of it "fixed" and it was very obvious in the photo it was not. Furthermore, the glue on the balusters is very obviously visible, so it looks a bit messy, and they also left a gap between the floor and the new newel post. I also asked them if they could sand the railings thoroughly so the yellow finish is removed and once again he assured me this was done. This was not true as you can see the finish still, another example of just "yessing" the customer and claiming something was done when it was not. If you can't do something then be honest about it, dont just say yes. I was most bothered by the post not meeting the trim (first pic) so Stanley said he would send someone to fix that for me the following week. Of course this never happened. Weeks go by and we realize one side of the railing is wobbling and loose! I requested they come back to fix this and when Stanley finally stopped by I reminded him about the trim issue and pointed out the gaps on the floor. He was like "Oh yes I remember, no problem I will send someone next week to fix this." We had three appointments which were cancelled each time for one reason or another relating to his guy not being able to show up at the last minute. Finally after weeks and several cancelled dates the guy shows up to fix the wobbly railing, and I also talked to him to confirm that he would fix the gap on the floor and the trim issue. He nodded and said yes, but only fixed one of the gaps in the floor and then left with no explanation. I contacted Stanley to try and understand where the communication went off (again, these are detail issues I brought up from the very beginning and was assured they would be fixed) and he just said "I didnt send him out there to do all that, just to fix the railing. I can send someone to fix the other things if you would like." He also tried to blame the fact that the floors were being sanded? That has nothing to do with your lack of attention to detail when finishing a job. Well that was months ago and i'm not holding my breath that this company gives a damn about fixing any detail work. I was simply "yessed" to death and there was no true intention to follow through on any of the things we discussed when I was told it would be fixed. Edit: To address some of the owners responses, this is a perfect example of why I do not recommend hiring them. My attempts to get things corrected have just been met with excuse after excuse. MKJC was hired to *finish* the job, and yet the railing they installed was later unstable and wobbly, and it took several weeks to get them to come fix it. Regarding the post that was not long enough - exactly my point. It was not long enough so they fashioned an extension piece to make up the rest of the distance, yet they made it too short to reach the end of the trim! Their finishing work is shoddy and then they will make excuses to justify why.

    Back Deck - Tread

I originally booked Stan for a small garage door trim project, while he was here he quoted me replacement options for my front porch and back deck since they were starting to show their wear. I went forward with both projects and his crew was able to complete them both in about a week and a half. Very happy with how things turned out, I now have stairs on my back deck and a gate to access the storage area under my front porch. I went with new materials (Trex, AZEK, vinyl) and am satisfied with how everything looks. Stan and his crew were all very professional and efficient.

Stan and his crew were terrific. Just from pictures he was able to identify some serious issues with our rotting front steps - including the fact that the entire structure was not up to code, which we had suspected. I spoke with Stan over a weekend and he was able to schedule us a few days after providing an estimate. Just based on his questions, he showed to have a high level of professional knowledge and experience. The estimate provided by MKJC was VERY competitive, but we chose Stan and MKJC mostly because we were so impressed with his responsiveness. Once he was aware of our project, he immediately sent us photos of similar projects while he put together a quote, which was detailed and comprehensive. He estimated the job to take two days, including the fact that our old footings would have to be dug out as they were not correct. Stan reached out and asked if he could come a day early, as they finished another project and had some extra time! Great! Yes! Stan and crew showed up on time, with a "let's do it!" attitude. Within two hours of starting our entire front steps were demo-ed, roof had supports and new framing was already being cut. This crew has a work ethic you don't see too often anymore and they have a great comraderie with each other. We were so impressed with the work, the fact that there were no major issues - actually, no issues at all, and again - I can't say it enough - the communication, that we asked Stan to quote for another job we'd like to accomplish in the next year. New footings were poured, deck framing replaced with 6x6s (instead of our 4x4s), the stairs were finally attached to the house, weather shield, all former wood replaced with pressure treated/vinyl, trek decking steps (which he pictured framed in and it looks terrific - no edges!) They were so careful about our new tree we planted that was in close proximity to the work area and upon completion, they left the worksite clean - you wouldn't have even known they had been there! Based on renovations/projects we have done in the past, and the project we are looking to complete next, one of the biggest turn offs for us is when we talk with a contractor and get a lot of "you don't want to do that" or offering suggestions that seem like shortcuts. On the future project we showed Stan and his colleague John, they listened to what we wanted, made some smart suggestions, pointed out some cost effective approaches and said project is completely doable. Thanks, Stan and company for our now-maintenance-free steps. You guys are great.

Working with Masonworks has been a roller coaster. They are very, very good at the masonry aspect,…read morebut we had a negative experience with everything outside of the excellent stone walls and patio they built for us. They have built beautiful flat stone walls for us in our front and back yards. We were very impressed with them after the first job they did for us in our front yard a few years ago, so we did not even look at other companies when we wanted to spruce up our backyard this year. The garden walls they built in the backyard were once again beautiful. However, as a gardener, I was disappointed and frustrated by the following things: - Our contract included 50/50 loam compost for the new garden beds. During the job, we caught them filling the beds with the grass they had pulled up from our old lawn and asked them to stop doing that. - When I went to start planting, I found that the garden beds had only a layer of new soil but that my shovel quickly hit a lot of big rocks and uncovered old soil, debris, and trash. - They completely trampled and destroyed my established perennial garden, which was located in a garden bed above where the new beds were built. They also broke several pavers in a little garden path I had and removed them without replacing them. - They recommended microclover for my lawn and seeded it for us as part of the contract, but it grew in quite spotty despite us maintaining it properly with daily waterings. I contacted them about the first issue and their initial response was to tell me that the stones I was finding were part of the wall construction - this was not the case. They had someone come out to take a look and concluded that the soil did need to be replaced, which they finally did. It is much better now, though I still have found some large stones in it. However, in the process of solving that issue, they caused the second one - many of the perennials that my mother and I had worked to plant over the past four years were totally destroyed. They offered me a credit to compensate for the loss, or the option to have them reinstall new flowers, but by that point I just didn't want them near my garden anymore so accepted the credit. I didn't bother contacting them about the spotty lawn - I threw down some grass seeds yesterday to try and fill in the gaps. While I appreciated that they did eventually take steps to resolve the issues, I found it quite frustrating to have to keep reaching out just to get them to do what they really should have done in the first place. They never did a final walkthrough as I've seen other contractors do. No apology for destroying my garden. They have a Benjamin Franklin quote, "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten" - I definitely felt some of that bitterness throughout this process. My conclusion is that they are really excellent masons but do not understand or respect gardens. If you hire them, be prepared to have to deal with that.

They were supposed to build a new rubber roof. It started leaking on 3 separate occasions (which btw was never fully fixed -- we moved on to different contractors who did address the issues). And like I said, it would take months for them to actually come back and attempt to fix anything. Often they'd come by, look at the damage, then I wouldn't hear from them for multiple weeks. Meanwhile, more damage continues to accrue to the walls and ceilings. The internal fixes they applied for the water damage were just patch jobs. They just plastered and painted over. Meanwhile, the insulation behind the wall was soaked and accrued black mold that we had to address later. Also worth pointing out a major blunder at the beginning of the project (see attached videos and pics). They opened up the roof, and left it open for multiple days without doing any work. Well of course a major rainstorm came by (which was on the weather forecast well in advance). Alll that water poured into the house in the middle of the night setting off fire alarms. It was a nightmare to deal with on my end.
