First, I tried to make an appointment by phone and left a voicemail. After two days, I still had not received a call back. I called again and got through to the receptionist so I was able to make an appointment for that afternoon. I got there and didn't have to wait too long because I rushed to finish my paperwork before the other person waiting finished. I just had a baby a few weeks prior so I didn't want to take too long away from her (my mother in law was watching her at home). After I did all the exams, which included dilation, the optometrist had me sit in the waiting room to look at frames. (I was not informed over the phone that my eyes would be dilated. She said I should be fine, but to just take surface streets home.) Then I expressed that I only wanted new lenses for my current frames and she attempted to sell me on getting frames because it was included in my co-pay. I understand that's how they earn money, but I don't like creating more waste than necessary. Plus, I didn't want to be there too long. I ended up just getting the first set of frames she suggested that was covered. After I chose the frames, I thought I was done there as Dr. Chu left me. Then I got into my car and was backing out of my spot when the receptionist ran up to me to tell me that I wasn't done yet. So I reparked my car and went back in. Then the receptionist told me I was done and I went back to my car. Again, she ran after me telling me there was one more test that the optometrist needed to do, but had forgotten to do. I again went back in. I definitely was not very impressed with the way this business was run. My husband went in a couple of weeks later and said that he had to wait for a very long time because the optometrist was on the phone with a plumber trying to arrange something...not for the business, but for her own HOME. It is a bit unnerving to have to wait for service because the optometrist is taking care of personal business at work. My husband also picked up my glasses for me, but I had never been called to let me know that they were ready. This place wasn't terrible, but just be prepared to stay for a while and make sure they are done with the whole visit when you leave. If it's convenient and covered by your insurance, it's okay. read more

Quick tip: The Optometry office is on Mission Blvd., right across from Ohlone College. However, do not park on the street side as the entrance is on the other side (back of the building). My family and I have been going to Dr. Chu for years now, and we really like her! She is professional, patient...and she listens to your concerns and provide great recommendations. Her staffs are also very friendly and helpful when it comes to glasses-picking. The glasses frame selections may seem small when you compare to the optometry offices you see in the mall, but they show the best selections. Also, they update their frames very frequently so you don't see the same glasses all the time. So far I have not seen any people who wears the same pair of glasses as me :) read more

I'm extremely disappointed and would not made an appointment with this eye doctor. They do not respect their patients.

Don't know what to say. I made a 9AM appointment and was made to wait there for over a half hour since she was expecting her family to come over for a "quick" visit. I ended up spending 2 1/2 hours for getting a reading prescription which I still haven't received.. The exam itself was just basic, the Dr didn't really help me. She just said that my eyes cannot be corrected and gave me a small reading prescription to satisfy me. I am still blind as a bat and she had no correction for me. she didn't even have any referrals for me. Its been over 2 weeks since I ordered by reading prescription. If I went to Walmart, I would have got it the next day. With this place, I haven't even received a call yet. I have called them so many times and the receptionist now gets mad every time i call her. I guess they must have sent it across the globe because no other place takes this long to deliver reading glasses. read more

I showed up today for an appointment a 1pm sharp that I made weeks ago. I just flew in from New York and was very frustrated to hear that I would have a 40 minute wait. This place is notoriously always running late and it's not ok. It would be courteous to at least call the patients ahead of time so they don't have to sit there and wait. The receptionist didn't try to help out much at all either. When this place is on time, they are great, but I'm extremely disappointed right now. read more

I finally received my contact prescription after contacting The California State Board of Optometry and making a formal complaint about Dr. Chu. The California State Board of Optometry could not have been more helpful and assured me that what Dr. Chu was doing was illegal and that they would resolve the issue. I can't believe the lengths I had to go to in order to receive my contact lens prescription. I would never recommend anyone going to Mission EyeCare Optometry. Had I read Jeff O's review earlier, I would not have made an appointment with this eye doctor. It was completely a waste of my time. She doesn't respect her patients AT ALL. She always tries to squeeze too many patients into the same time slot that she is always behind her schedule for at least one hour and half. To her, making money is most important. Wasting other people's time is absolutely NORMAL. That's why she didn't even feel a tiny bit of sorry to me and other patients anxiously waiting for our appointments an hour and half late. With so many patients getting squeezed in the same time slot, I really doubt how much time she is going to alocate to each of her patient, and how thorough the service she is providing to you. Her service really makes me sick. If Yelp offers me the option of giving her negative 5 star, I would not hesitate to do so. read more

I had my first appointment with Dr. Chu a few days ago and I was very happy with my service. I called on a Friday afternoon and the girl who answered was super friendly and helped me make an appointment for 10:30 the next morning. I was advised to arrive early since I'd have to fill out new patient paperwork. As soon as I was finished I was taken back and the testing started. Dr. Chu was friendly and chatted with me while doing various eye tests. While I was waiting for my eyes to dilate one of the receptionists helped me pick out some cute frames. I had a great visit and look forward to receiving future eye care here! read more

I have been coming to Dr. Chu for over a decade now. She is always very professional, clear and patient answering questions, and the wait is never too long. My delivery of contact lenses are always very fast and on-time. She gives her honest opinion when it comes to what kind of glasses to get or what brand of contacts to order. She often goes the extra mile for her patients. When I went to college on the East Coast, I would still come to see her during my breaks. She would mail me my contact lenses when they arrived if I had already returned to college. When I made the transition from hard to soft contact lenses, she went above and beyond suggesting different brands to try and following up with me in regular visits checking the fit. The office staff are also very professional and helpful. My calls to the office are always answered promptly, and I usually have no problem scheduling an appointment within a week or two. She is also great for bilingual families because both her English and Mandarin Chinese are excellent. It's conveniently located across from Ohlone College, and I have never had trouble finding a parking spot. I cannot see myself seeing any other optometrist and highly recommend her. read more

I love this place! My entire family receives eyecare from here and I've recommended her to many of my friends as well. I've been coming here for the past 10+ years and have really seen the practice grow. Through it all, she always uses the latest technologies and equipment. Dr Chu and her staff are extremely knowledgeable, professional and friendly. In addition to the regular exams, I've had eye problems over the years and she's always able to provide the proper care. She is always very thorough in her exams. Additionally, her practice is very clean and her frame selection is great containing many of the latest styles. She is even very helpful in frame selection if you're like me and have no idea what kind of eyewear looks best on you. Her weekend hours tend to be a bit busier, but I always just try scheduling on a weekday or on one of her late days after work. read more

Very bad service. She always tried to fit in so many patients that she is always behind by at least 2 hrs on her appt. We had appt for 3 people at 9:30am appt and did not leave the place until 1:00pm and my wife decided not to finish her eye exam which mean 3.5 hrs for 2 patients. She will do a little exam for every patients so all of us have to wait and take turn. She scheduled 6 patients (2 families) from 9:30am to 11:30am (2 hrs window) and only finished with 2 patients. All other 4 were partially checked and waiting. There was a guy with 11:30am appt still waiting at 1pm and he asked if we were drop in. I told him we were here since 9:30am for our appt. I stopped going there for over a year ago and my wife said this will be her & kids last time. read more

Very very bad service. As the other reviewer mentioned, she always double books and everybody has to to wait so long. And it looks like she bought some new screening equipment and she made all of us go through Glaucoma screening paying $200 for entire family. We have been going there for last three years, but we are definitely done with her. I can take long wait times but not cheating. read more

I am attempting to get a prescription from Mission EyeCare Optometry on behalf of my customer who is out of contacts and Dr. Chu has refused to fax over her prescription and medical records. We contacted her on the phone and she flat out told us no, she would not send over patient's records. I have been working in the field of optometry for over 10 years and have never heard of a doctor or office holding their patient's prescription hostage. read more

horrible experience with Mission Eye Care. the office staff and the doctor was very friendly, but i ended up with glasses that were nothing more than a $350 paper weight. i knew going into my eye test that my near sighted vision was bad. i had been using $10 over-the-counter glasses from the local pharmacy and those worked just fine. however, i had vision coverage through my employer and had never used it, so i went for an eye test. based on the results of the eye test the doctor confirmed that i needed reading glasses, but said that i would also benfit from a mild prescription for distance. being assured by the doctor and the insurance company that i wouldn't be stuck with glassess i didn't need (and also beng told by the insurance company that i could get a refund if the doctor couldn't provide glasses that suited my needs) i went with the doctor's recommendation for progressive lenses. when i first picked up the glassess the prescription didn't feel right, but the doctor asked me to give them a try and if they didn't work out they would correct the prescription. several days later i returned the glasses. about a week later i picked up the glasses and the prescription was correct. however, the field of vision through the progressive lenses was extremely narrow and it was very hard to use the glasses for reading (which is my primary need). i returned the glasses for a second time; and after confirming with my insurance company that i could get a refund, that's what i requested. the doctor's office refused. to compensate for the doctor's office not taking responsibility for recommending glasses that didn't meet my needs, my insurance company agreed to refund my out of pocket expense. unfortunately, the result of accepting a refund through the insurance company was that i have lost my vision benfits for a year. thanks Dr. Chu for making my first experience with prescription glasses a nightmare and causing me to lose my benefits. read more

After trying out many places, my whole family and I have been going to this place for at least 15 years, and we still think its the best. Even when I was in college I tried other places but they couldn't compare and would even postpone eye appointments til visiting home. The place is very clean, professional, has state-of-the art equipment (they just upgraded equipment recently), and has great service! Staff and Dr. Harren Chu are very nice and friendly, I always enjoy my visit. I also appreciate how Dr. Chu is really patient and truly cares about her patients. Once I wanted to try out toric contacts for my astgmatism, but due to my prescription it was hard to find a match. She let me try out many different lens, requiring many follow up visits since she wanted my eyes to have time to get used to it. After I didn't like them, she even ordered custom fit ones for me to try. In the end, I decided toric lens were not worth it. Not only was she understanding she did not charge me a dime for any of the many follow up visits and toric lens I tried! Most doctors will at least charge you for each visit. The only thing I noticed in the past that could be improved is sometimes the wait time. The place is too nice and so are lenient with people that are late, which builds up and causes others to have to wait. Last time I visited though I did notice an improvement and was told that they were addressing the issue. read more

I'm very thankful for the thoroughness and attention that Dr. Chu at Mission Eyecare Optometry has given to me and my husband. I remember having extended visits with all of the different testing that she does (not sure all the medical terminology, but visual fields, depth perception, color blindness, etc.). When we were healthy, it seemed like quite a bit to do in our visits, but then she diagnosed my husband with an enlarged optic nerve, and sent us to an ophthalmologist to follow more closely. When we spoke to the opthalmologist, he asked us to compare his findings with our optometrists'. She sent the records over right away as we were at our opthalmology appointment, and our opthalmologist was able to get it right then and there, and reassure us that my husband's pre-glaucoma condition has been stable. She also follows me closely for any complications from my eye condition, PBEB. Because I get dry eyes with my eye condition, she's worked hard to fit me with contact lenses that were more comfortable and breathable. We really trust Dr. Chu in her medical opinion and the attention she gives to each of us, and would recommend her without hesitation! read more

If I could give a negative star I would. I am not the type of person to write negative reviews about places but I was so disgusted and upset about my experience here I felt this to be necessary to hopeful prevent other people from coming here. I selected this pl;ace at random to get an eye exam and purchase new frames. When I got there to fill out paperwork I kept overhearing the doctor speak to the receptionist with a VERY RUDE tone which I did not appreciate. It is very unprofessional to conduct herself in that manner especially with patients around. The receptionist seemed lost about a lot of the policies and procedures but was nice and did try. I then went to the back to get my exam and felt very rushed by the doctor. It was if she was trying to hurry and rush through the exam. I had informed them I wanted to purchase glasses when I had made the appointment. Knowing this the doctor proceeded dilated my eyes before I could pick out frames and it was difficult for me to even see how they looked since my vision was altered. After selecting a frame I was informed of my options and opted for the cheaper option. Again the receptionist was lost did not know how much I was going to owe. I purchased my glasses and was called back an hour later saying that they made a mistake and I owed more money. I paid over the phone. When I went to go pick up the glasses the minute I put them on I immediately got a headache. I explained to the receptionist I wanted to have my prescription checked again return the glasses which she said she thought would be fine but the doctor was out of the office picking up her child so she didn't know for sure. She told me she would call me that night to let me know an answer. I proceeded to scheduled an appointment for the next week to come back in. I had not received a call till a week later (the day before my appointment) reminding me of my appointment date. When I asked again about returning the glasses the receptionist once again did not have an answer for me even after a week. When I went in to check my prescription the doctor said I just had to get used to the glasses and give it time. I have been wearing glasses for 15 years and never had to do that. She then told me the most effective way to check the prescription properly was for me to bring in my old glasses to compare and that I needed to make yet again another appointment. After telling her I was not happy with the frames and I just wanted to go somewhere else and find some I was happy with she said she would work with me and allow me to select a new frame. At this point she seemed irritated and began to be rude with me. I wanted to chose some frames that my insurance covered and she continued to give me attitude. At this point I had enough and told her I did not appreciate her attitude and the way she was running her office. I had explained to her the severe lack of communication between her office and myself. I found it to be interesting that they were quick to call me back telling me I owed them more money but not to call me back when I needed an answer about the procedures for returning the frames. She continued to argue with me telling me that she had no idea what was going on when the problem was very simple and I explained to her receptionist what I was looking to do. I asked if her if the correct way to check a prescription was to bring in the old glasses why wasn't I informed of that over the phone so I could have brought them in and try to solve one of the issues. Again she continued to claim to have no idea of what I wanted. The argument went on a little longer (in front of a patient, mind you) and I finally had enough and walked out. I have never be treated like this by any doctor and was just amazed at how RUDE and UNPROFESSIONAL she was. I was not aware that a simple eye exam and purchasing new frames would be such a horrible experience especially seeing that I had gone to other eye doctors I have picked at random. Hopefully this review can help someone avoid such a negative and bad experience like the one I had. read more
