I recently attended a holiday party at a friend's house. They usually order catering from local places that make exceptional food. This visit was a little different because the food was amazingly good. As we conversed over dinner, I definitely had to stop and mention just how delicious the food was and ask where it was from. I really enjoyed the hummus, falafel, chicken shawerma, beef shawerma, saffron rice and the dolmades. Everything was soo delicious, my absolute favorites were the addictive hummus and the perfectly seasoned chicken shawerema. I highly, highly recommend a stop in here. I called ahead and picked up food to go for me and my friends. Hal was really nice and kept me updated on the slight delay when I arrived. If you're in a hurry or have some place to be, this probably isn't the place for you that day. The food is fresh and made to order. The food itself was great. I rarely ever write bad reviews, but the owner/worker here is one of the rudest women I've ever dealt with as a customer. I've eaten here before, and since there are no other Mediterranean options in the area, I've just dealt with her consistently being short-staffed and downright mean. Very long wait times for food and having to deal with her bad attitude is not worth it. Do yourself a favor and head over to Olive Leaves in Highland to get your fix instead! Listen. The people who have bad things to say about this place need to realize a few things. Right now, one woman runs this place. She has one server at best to help. When you come in, it may look empty. And she may honestly tell you that it's busy and you'll have a wait. That's because tons of people do takeout orders here. So even if it's an empty dining room, she is in fact busting her a** in there. She's not trying to discourage you, she's just being honest because she's probably tired of people complaining about wait times. So if you're impatient, go somewhere else besides this delightful hole in the wall. If you want a leisurely meal that tastes great, then hang around. We started with the falafel. The outside was crispy. The inside was moist and full of flavor and spice. We also had the mushrooms. I don't know if the mushrooms were fresh vs canned, but the sauce had good flavor. I had the chicken kebab entree, which was huge with a ton of chicken and rice with some accompanying vegetables. The chicken was juicy with just the right char. The rice was aromatic and fluffy. My husband got the cauliflower falafel wrap which was also quite tasty and bursting with fantastic tzatziki sauce. Our server was very kind and made sure we were taken care of. The digs are simple and unadorned. It has a diner/cafe feel. Our whole meal, two appetizers, a large entree, a large fat wrap, and even fries on the side (I would pass on the fries) was around 44 dollars before tip. Food was great, however, if your menu list at $28.99, a customer should never, ever get a bill with a charge of $34.99! I understand if cost have gone up and you need to adjust your prices. I can even understand if you haven't updated your menu. But I can't understand if you don't tell the customer of the new pricing! That's just bad business sense if not outright deceptive practices! This is my favorite restaurant in NWI and has been for ages! I grew up here and loved coming throughout the years. Even when I lived in Lincoln Park and West Hollywood, I would have to come back whenever I visited my family. I live in the area again and am so glad I stopped by again. I am pescatarian and have been vegan, vegetarian, and a meat eater throughout the years, so I've been able to try the entire menu and have always loved my meal. Also, I have my dad, brother, and some friends are very picky and they have loved dining at Mishkenut, too. Anyway, I drove my mom to her optometrist and we came by for lunch. The place is always clean and is decorated with really great items from the Middle East. The playlist was awesome today! I loved the songs that were playing and kept Shazamming the ones I didn't know. Hal, the owner, was very welcoming from the get go and attentive, friendly, and happy. This is such a gem in The Region! We caught it on a quiet night and got to know the owner a bit, which was a bonus. She recommended the Mish Special with which we order labana (or labne), one of our favorites. The special itself is for 2 or more people with a number of different meats from steak to chicken to kufta. It would be splitting hairs if I had to rank each as it was phenomenal across the board. The hummus and labana were also fantastic as was the pita (it wasn't dried out or blah like you get at some places). The place itself is pretty simple but it works here. The restaurant is very unassuming located in a small strip mall. We parked in the back parking lot and noticed a sign next to the door for a $7.95 lunch special which included a sampling of their menu. The three of us dining went with that. The waitress did tell us that there was a $2 up charge since that sign was installed. The special included chicken, beef, kufta, hummus, salad, and rice. Served with a side of pita bread. The chicken and beef were very flavorful and moist. The salad was fresh and crunchy with a simple olive oil dressing. The lifts was a bit dry and the rice was good, not anything over the top. The star, the hummus!! It was absolutely delicious, smooth, creamy, with the freshest lemon flavor.
