For two hours my family got to really enjoy working the rooms together to pass and get as many points as we could get. Each room is as different as you could imagine from the other rooms. The art, digital lighting, signage, and aesthetics are so cool. They did an incredible job with designing it. Mish Mash feels like a liminal space sometimes. I have to dock 3 stars for the complexity of the games, the speed of the games, and the setup of the games. 1 Star Docked for the Setup. The rooms each have a card scanner with a code you enter. That's easy enough. But some rooms require you to push buttons to select teams. Each room handles this differently. It was confusing. Stuff like this needs to be decided outside the room. By the time you go inside the room, you should be playing the game. I don't want to spend an additional 1-3 minutes learning how the setup works. 1 Star Docked for the Complexity of the Games. This makes me sad because the rooms look amazing. The soccer game's fence is too low, so balls ricochet easily. The ropes rooms are too intense for bigger adults, and quite frankly, a liability. The sewer room is a cool concept but way too difficult to climb for adults. The cathedral room we solved, but the game penalized us for not pushing the buttons at the end. We didn't know and the staff didn't give us the points. The biblioteca and crime wall room's tablets froze and we couldn't finish the games. The room with the white cables and colors doesn't give you enough instructions. In fact, please don't give us riddles. Just tell us what to do. I don't want to be even more confused than I already am. Please just forgo the riddles entirely. 1 Star Docked for the Speed of the games. From entering a room to start, the games take forever. 3 minute countdown becomes a 10 second countdown, which then becomes a 10-15 second riddle, which then becomes the room turning on. It's a lot of time docked for just waiting. I was getting impatient. New rooms made me nervous. I'm sad. This place looked so cool. The rooms are beautiful, but disappointing. If I could change mish mash, I would instead do a museum style approach, where the tablets are removed, the magnet doors are removed. And players are instead given an app or a tablet, and each room can be freely entered and played with. And maybe have players solve a mystery and learn to communicate with each other and perhaps with others. And maybe each room has a sort of solution or goal that works towards a greater goal? Or doing a set number of instructions will flash a code that can be used in a phone or tablet to open up more clues or something. That way the whole exiting and re-entering can be alleviated. Either that or take a road trip to activate games down the street and create games that are a little simpler in design. Mish Mash is a good concept but it needs more time to cook. Thank you for the experience, but until they fix things, I wouldn't recommend coming back. read more

Terrible, bootlegged version of activate. Practically every room we went into gave us a few seconds to figure out what we need to do before failing us and we having to leave and re-enter. Other rooms were dilapidated and falling apart. Even the rooms that looked nicer were functionally broken. And forget about asking for help. This place was a great find! We were in town for a week in October, and most of the things we were planning to do were closed on Tuesdays. We found MishMash and thought it seemed interested, figured we would give it a shot. It was a random Tuesday afternoon, so it was literally just us and one other small group. We had a blast! There was way more variation to the puzzle rooms than we expected, with a good mix of mental and physical challenges. Some of the mental ones took us a few tries to figure out, some of them we did multiple times even after figuring them out to try harder difficulties or shorter time limits. The physical rooms ranged from less strenuous puzzles that required more precision and planning, to some that were actually a workout and kinda kicked our asses a little. The guy running the place (who's name I wish I had asked) was great! He was friendly and laid-back, he checked in on us regularly without hovering or feeling intrusive. Genuinely good guy rather than the forced, sale-sy customer service vibe you might expect going in. Highly recommend Mish Mash if you are looking to just get out and do something different for a few hours. We will definitely check it out again next time we're in town to see what new ideas they've done (and revisit some we did before.) read more

This place was probably nicer 4 years ago. Now, it's a bit run down. It could use some updating. There appeared to only be 2 staff on a weekend night and they were not available to help out if you needed a clue. They could hardly handle getting people checked in. Some rooms were fun, others were challenging bc we spent all our time trying to figure out what to do. No directions -not even "goals" of what you need to accomplish. For what we paid I wouldn't do it again. The concept is great but it could be a lot better. A few simple directions or even goals for the rooms, clean and update a little and it has potential to be pretty neat. read more

My daughter loves escape rooms and this one looked pretty special so took her and a friend for some fun. You have an option of an hour or two hours and we booked the hour. It's located in the Fox Valley Mall in Aurora, which is a lot further than I thought from Glencoe so this is likely a one time visit. However, it was a very fun visit! It's different from your typical one room escape room. There are several rooms with different mental and physical challenges. You put in your code to get in any of the open rooms and try to pass. In our case we mostly failed, but we still had fun! Some examples of our challenges: - crawling our way out of a ball pit filled with exercise balls - following a secret code maze to get from one room to the other There were a lot of tweens and teens running from room to room and I saw a big group of kids enjoying pizza/cake. It's definitely a fun stop for a bday party, although think it would be difficult for any kid under 10. I, myself, found it challenging in my 40s. An hour was plenty of time to experience the fun, although if you expect to pass the majority of the rooms you probably need the 2 hour option. Not sure if I'd make the long trip back to Aurora, but I'd definitely go back if they opened a closer location and recommend to others in the area. read more

This place was super fun! It's kind of like a bunch of mini escape rooms. The price comes with a 2 hour time block and I thought that was the perfect amount of time. My group went at 10AM and it was less expensive and not crowded at all! There was only 1 other group going at the same time which made it nice to not have to wait for any of the rooms. You can have a group between 2-6 people. Some of the rooms are more intellectual and some are more physical. Some of them have a very clear objective and some you have to learn by trial and error. The workers are willing to help out by giving hints if you're struggling though. Additionally, they have lockers and a coat rack since they advise not bringing anything in and it tends to get warm back in the rooms. I highly recommend this place for team building or if you just want to have a good time with friends! read more

Not worth the price. My boyfriend and I enjoy doing these interactive, fun escape rooms, but this was not one of them. First off, pretty expensive for just a meh experience. Just for the both of us was already in the $70-80s range. Some of the rooms were alright, but a good amount of them were rooms that were out of order or not working properly. Some of the rooms were similar in challenges, and some just did not seem.. finished. It was pretty disappointing to say the least. We had high hopes for this place, seeing that it was advertised differently from what it actually is. We'd much rather spend the $30+ on an escape room. read more

That was never explained to us until we couldn't get into a room because we didn't have enough points. We are pretty good at escape plans and get the concept of being in a room with no info but some of the rooms could benefit from a little more info. Brought a group of 5 teen girls and they all enjoyed it. The check in process is quick since waivers are completed online before arriving. Instructions are provided through a brief video before moving to the rooms. Each room is a unique experience and if the team doesn't succeed in completing the challenge they can chose to start over to attempt it again. If you are looking for a family friendly experience, give Mish Mash a try. This is a clever escape room of sorts. There are rooms that are physical challenges and some that are mental. There are easier rooms and harder ones as well. It's a positive experience for the whole family to do together...or even a group of friends. When we arrived, the customer service was excellent. The employees are kind and very helpful. This was important because some of the rooms experienced some technical difficulties while we were there. Some of the smart pads were acting wonky and other rooms wouldn't reset, but the workers helped us whenever in need. The glitches were a little annoying but we persevered. Some of the rooms could also stand a little more instructions, but we still had fun. I recommend this is you are looking for a bonding or team building exercise or just some family fun while social distancing from others. You are only in the room with your family, everyone wore them wit masks in common areas, the workers do walk through sanitizing and there is sanitizer everywhere. Got a Groupon and came here with a group of 6. They have a bathroom there and a lounge area with Jenga and connect four. You start by watching a tutorial video and then have a code to go into various rooms and complete adventures. We were expecting an escape room so this was a bit of a let down. The rooms were fun but used physical rather than mental strength. My husband was not prepared as he wore slippers. We were about to go through all the rooms available in about 1.5 hours. read more

We bought tickets to go here on the way home from a family day out. I think it was about $20. per person for an hour, which seemed high but we hoped it would be worth it. It was nice that they had all the paperwork online so you could fill it out beforehand. When we got there the staff was great, we got a locker for our coats and then we were given our 4-digit code and watched a video that showed us how to get into rooms and what to do if we need help or exit a room and try again. The staff member brought us to our first room and told us that after that room we could pick and choose whatever room was open to do next, there was no order to the rooms themselves. Alone in the room we realized there was not much instruction. It turned out there were really no instructions in many rooms. A few rooms that had instructions, the instructions were very short and sometimes unhelpful. We also realized that this was not a place to go with one member of our group who is legally blind. Alot of the rooms we could not do due to the fact that we needed all four of us to pass the room and many of the rooms were impossible to do is you had any physical disability. So while this place was fun and we all did have fun we will probably not go back do to the price and the lack of instruction. read more

I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. Honestly, pretty much every room was faulty or didn't work because of technical issues. We spent half our time just resetting the rooms to get them to work right and there was one person working who didn't have time to help or was no where to be found. Plus no sanitizer offered. Also one room you literally just kick soccer balls, into goals that's not an adventure and something I'd rather have done in my backyard. Please don't give these people your money. Go to a fun escape room where the people actually put effort into making them or round 1 where you can win a prize. Here's more examples of terrible rooms there's pictures on a wall and athe song "Cherry Pie" plays and you have to touch a picture of the pie. Neither I nor my friends really knew what to expect when we went in but we had a great time! The rooms are a mix of physical activities, focus/precision, and a couple of thinkers. We got through all of the rooms in the time allotted (two hours) and revisited almost all of them. It was fun to try to beat a room we hadn't been able to get through earlier. My favorite part was watching my wife get through a room that had really challenged her the first time around. I can imagine a lot of groups have a moment like that. The staff was also super friendly and helpful which is always a plus. There were definitely rooms we liked better than others and we had a few moments where we weren't 100% sure how a room worked or found a technical issue with the equipment, but we're a pretty easy going bunch and it didn't bother us at all. Because such a high percentage of the rooms are physical, this probably wouldn't be the right fit for someone with mobility issues. That said, I'm not exactly a gym rat and I never felt like I was missing out. If you can spend a day at six flags or an hour at a playground jumping and climbing, you should be just fine. This is basically the tapas version of escape rooms and I would recommend it! read more

i went here with a family member for a birthday with 6 people. right off the bat, it's worth noting that if you or any other guest has a sensitivity to flashing lights, some of the rooms will not at all be accessible. we went on a saturday afternoon around 3, and it was very busy, mostly with middle school aged kids. the rooms are not at all soundproofed and for us, it was extremely loud. i am sound-sensitive and found myself having to put my airpods on at times. the rooms themselves really vary in quality/fun from room to room. some puzzles, like the song/picture(?) room, were not at all clear enough, and i think all rooms could benefit from instructions much more clear. read more

I was looking for something to do with my 15 year old grandson last minute on Saturday evening. My niece suggested Mish Mash. It was her birthday that day and fiends were taking her. It was a hit with my grandson for certain. You can pay for the amount of time to want to spend. The entire group of rooms is open to everyone. We signed up and paid online, completing the disclaimer forms to save time at the counter. We watched a five minute video on how the fun works and then were escorted into the halls of rooms housing physical and intellectual challenges. They give you a keypad code that stops working when your time is up. You can go in any order you wish. Rooms show as occupied or not. There are 3 levels of play on a keypad inside each room. Instructions appear on the screen and the challenge begins. I liked the labyrinth room while he liked the "sewer" best. The owner was nice and helped us understand a couple of rooms better. I will stress that it is not an Escape Room. Water is available but no food for obvious reasons. It is located inside the Fox Valley Mall near Round 1 but we went through Macy's and found it fine. Mish Mash Adventures is a brand-new concept located in Fox Valley Mall in Aurora. They are situated on the upper level in the middle of the mall facing the food court right above build-a-Bear. They moved into the space which used to house the indoor skating rink. I visited Mish Mash during the day when the mall was less crowded and we were one of only two groups playing. They have only been open for a few weeks. I have to say that Mish Mash really impressed me! As I mentioned before, they are a brand-new concept which features a bunch of different "challenge rooms". It's not quite an escape room as with those, you are simply locked in one room for an hour. At Mish Mash, you get to try as many of the rooms as you can in an hour or two. The decor and scenery were fantastic. It's winding hallways are decked out in an alley theme complete with brick walls, dim lighting and mysterious music. Each room has a screen on the outside which you use a custom issued pin code to enter each room. Without giving away too much information, each room has its own challenge within its walls. Some of the challenges are physical where you have to climb, crawl or throw. Others are skill-based challenges which require you to solve a problem or a puzzle to successfully complete the challenge. Some are a combination of both! If you have ever watched any of the 90s Nickelodeon game shows such as Legends of the Hidden Temple, Double Dare, Guts, etc., you'll have a better understanding of what this place is about. We always found ourselves watching those shows and always wondering "why can't we be on those shows"? Mish Mash decides to build a real-life version of those shows we could play! The pricing is also very fair! As of right now, it is $23 per person for one hour and $30 per person for two hours. Although I imagine as they open more rooms, that price will probably increase. The recommended group size is 2-3 but you can have up to 6 players in one group. Recommended age is 10+ just because they feature a lot of physical challenges that might prove to be too difficult for younger children to have fun with or complete. Our group was four adult women looking for something fun to do. The challenges were clever and various. There were physical and mental puzzles and we loved them all! With so many people interacting with things and coming through the rooms , we weren't surprised to find some glitches with the tech. Staff was extremely responsive in resetting anything that needed it. We had a blast! I would love to come through with my family if teens. Great concept. Poor execution. The good stuff- Friendly staff. Some cool room concepts (and some very cool design work). The bad stuff- The biggest issue is there is not enough quality instruction in the rooms. And the requirements were Inconsistent- Sometimes you have to push buttons at the start of the games and sometimes you don't. We had technical issues w rooms needing to be reset or being changed to the number of players and then back again. Bottom line: If they improve the instructions I think it would be a much better experience and we would have had much more fun actually PLAYING the games versus trying to figure out HOW to play. read more

pros: very original experience and a more physically intensive alternative to escape rooms! cons: the one male employee. we couldn't understand what he was saying most of the time, he cornered one of my friends in a hallway, and he actually got into one of the game rooms before the door locked and watched us as we tried to complete it. personally, i was too uncomfortable to even attempt so i failed it so we could leave. i can look past the lack of directions in some of the rooms because it allows you to spend more time there and you'll get it after a few tries. but an employee being a perv brought the mood down IMMENSELY. read more

Our family went yesterday and it was quite fun! The different rooms all have one challenge to complete, and the tasks are definitely difficult. Our family came in super confident we'd finish everything on hard and we were humbled when we switched over to easy for most of the rooms. A few things to note: I'd say a good portion of the rooms require a moderate level of physical activity. You may be crawling, jumping, climbing, balancing, etc. This would not be a good place to take someone elderly (unless they just want to watch and laugh). It also feels like there are some kinks to workout. The doors sometimes don't open and close as expected, and it'd be nice to have a restart button in the room. Overall highly recommend and we'd definitely go back to experience new rooms! We got the Groupon and it was much more affordable that way. read more
