    Scallop Khavsa
    Mark T.

Sometimes, places discovered by a happy accident are the best! I'd journeyed to Le Bouchon across the street, only to discover they were closed for a private event! Looking around, I immediately saw Mirra, and decided to give it a shot. If you take nothing else from the review, let it be this: Mirra has fusion done right! It is easy to do a fusion restaurant to sell two disparate cuisines, for fear that real fusion will cause "all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light". I once visited a Mexican-Japanese fusion restaurant that had Mexican Tacos and Japanese Sushi, rather than Mexican Sushi and Japanese Tacos! Mirra is the kind of spot that makes me wish Yelp had a sixth star, for places that are all around exceptional are rare, and Mirra is one of them. Now, I like to at least pretend I know the difference between issues with technical execution and matters of personal taste. The only critiques I can levy are due to personal taste alone. Don't get me wrong, these are numerous, but "I don't like mango" (for e.g.) is not a valid reason to dock any points. I had the pleasure of eating: Chaas Aguachile, Fideo Seco, Scallop Khavsa, and the Rasmali Tres Leches. I also had the pleasure of drinking: "oof," Marg No. 6, and a Caffo Amaretto digestif. We start at the Chaas Aguachile: There is an immediate hit of bright acid notes, one that quickly fades into a savory experience. The fish is of exceptional quality, and the accents make the experience even better such as the nopales adding vegetal notes, and the fried bits (onion?) adding just enough crispness. Next comes the Fideo Seco: I can hardly complain about this being a meatless, pasta-centric dish, it is so by design. If I put my carnivorous nature aside, the dish was still superbly executed. The pasta was cooked well, the sauce was rich and flavorful, and the green added abundant earthy notes. Again, some bonus points for the accents of cheese and fried pepper(?) bits. The star of the night was the Scallop Khavsa. This dish took me back to a divine scallop dish I had at Montreal's Cadet. Scallops were of top-tier quality, the sauce was rich and flavorful enough to be eaten like soup (no surprise, since Khavsa is soup!) Peppers added some heat without going overboard, squid chicharron for some crispness, and veggies addedbrightness. Just enough heat, just enough sweet, all the savory, all the texture, 11/10, no notes. For dessert, I ordered the Rasmali Tres Leches. A rock solid dessert with a soft, moist cake which is great for lovers of mango, which unfortunately, I am not. In my opinion, the mango (or perhaps my lack of love of it), overpowered more subtle things going on, like an olive oil cake or saffron-cardamom milks. Also, while a fine dessert to share, I felt the portion was too large for one person. Now, we arrive at the drinks: The "oof" was a delightful take on an Indo-Mexican old fashioned, the Marg #6 a creative version of a margarita that didn't go overboard on the strawberries. Both, especially the OOF were strong and boozy, had savory notes, and just the right amount of sweet. Finally, the Caffo Amaretto was just that, a higher quality amaretto. An area where Mirra shines is the service. The servers work superbly as a team, and service was very friendly, attentive, and fast, especially given that the restaurant was very busy at the time. I especially want to recognize my bartender, O'Neil. One little note on service: when food is brought out, the waiter offers a quick explanation of what it is and what goes into it. However, given the speed and volume at which this is spoken in an already loud environment, it can be very hard to understand. This led to me completely missing the tortilla brought with one of the dishes. Being wrapped in napkins and set aside, I dismissed these as extra napkins rather than tasty and homemade looking tortillas! Oops. Final verdict: While it's not incorrect to say I personally did not love all the dishes at Mirra, this is due to matters of taste. I don't adore nopales, mangoes, or green pastas. However, I do adore the care, creativity, and quality that shines through in every dish, drink, and server interaction. Everything was top-notch, so much so I made a reservation to return two weeks later before I even paid my bill.

Seasonal fish. Half Mexican spices, half Indian spices

The food here is outstanding! The flavors and layers of Mexican and Indian spices are so well incorporated and I've never experienced something like it. So much so that i keep coming back! Being gluten free this restaurant does have ample choices on their menu but since some things may be seasonal be sure to tell the waiter and they'll brief you on what's good. My favorites have been the roasted beets, prawn chaat, lamb biryani (I eat it without the roti topping), and the seasonal fish. Mocktails are also amazing here and well crafted not just juice. I haven't tried the tasting menu yet but I look forward to the experience some time soon!

I was excited to finally get a chance to try Mirra and came by with a couple of friends for dinner. I started with the Mezcal Negroni which was tasty. I enjoyed the mezcal mango combo and it was a fairly light and refreshing drink. For food we shared the Roasted Winter Squash Chaat, Crispy Taco, Lamb Barbacoa Biryani with a Roti Seal, and Duck Carnitas. The crispy taco and duck carnitas were my favorite of the night. The crispy tacos reminded me of the seafood / ceviche tacos I've had in Mexico City and the scallops were really fresh. We added on a taco as it's 2 per order typically. The duck carnitas were great as well with pressed duck legs served with a green tomatillo sauce and tortillas. The carnitas shredded easily and I liked how crispy the outside edges were. The toasted winter squash was pretty good as well but the lamb biryani was a letdown. As one of their signature dishes, the roti seal was fun but didn't add any flavor and was pretty dry to eat. The biryani itself was bland and lamb a bit dry. There are so many great spots for biryani and this one was just ok. Unfortunately overall the food didn't really interest me. I've had better Mexican and Indian food elsewhere and the promise of fusion dishes ended up to be a letdown.

Super tasty combination of flavors and great cocktails. Loved that the portions are on the smaller side so you can try lots of dishes. Great for a date night or small group. Service was friendly and high end.

Finally got to try Mirra and it definitely lived up to the hype! Indian-Mexican fusion isn't something I thought I needed to try, but clearly I was mistaken. Everything about this place was a yes. Bollywood music, check. Excellent, friendly service, check. Food that's flavorful and spicy? CHECK! Though, nothing was overly spicy. The presentation and the blend of spices for each dish was just lovely. We loved the lamb tacos (crispy cheese!) and the duck tacos (so, so, so tender). The Carne Apache Papad was soooo good. I could've had 5 of those! And of course, the lamb biriyani was just incredibly flavorful and the lamb was tender and juicy. It was also beautifully presented and we couldn't get enough. The only dish we didn't really care for was the Mirra Salad. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't as amazing as everything else we had. I can see why this place is a Bib and I'm a fan for sure!

Mirra in Bucktown is such a fun and refreshing concept--an Indian-Mexican fusion spot that really leans into its vibe. The Bollywood music adds a unique, energetic touch that instantly sets the mood and makes it feel like more than just a dinner--it's an experience. The service was also solid--attentive and friendly without being overbearing. The margaritas were definitely a highlight--perfectly balanced, flavorful, and honestly some of the best part of the evening. The food overall is good, with a few standout dishes, though some items felt a bit average. We enjoyed the roti quesadilla the most, followed by the scallops khavsa. The beet salad was just average. That said, the atmosphere, music, and drinks more than make up for it. If you're looking for a lively night out with great cocktails and a unique cultural twist, Mirra is absolutely worth checking out.

When your out and about trying new restaurants, there is a "Law" of averages that takes place - Out of ten restaurant tries: 2 will be Excellent 2 will be Just Okay 6 will be good to very good (Exceptional and Duds are rare) Tonight at Mirra, I got one of those "rare" exceptional's, and it hit me like a brick! Everything going on here at Mirra was pretty damn exceptional! The service, the ambience, the menu, the taste palette, just magnificent. I have been hearing a lot of monologue about Mirra and how outstanding it is. So tonight was a "I've gotta know" night and I was certainly NOT disappointed. I ordered: * Mirra Mezze - which was Housemade Achar, Salsa Tatemado, Sikil Pak, Guacamole, Tlayudas & Papads - Stunning * Crispy Taco - with Hudson Bay Scallops, Mexican Green Curry, Nopales Pico, Crispy Fenugreek Roti - one of the best tacos I've ever had * Skull Island Prawn Chaat - which consisted of U8 Grilled Prawns, Chaat Yogurt, Cilantro-Mint Chutney, Salsa Negra - you've never had peel and eat shrimp done this was - unbelievably unique and delicious * Off Color Mexican Beer made specifically for tacos What I had here tonight for dinner was a blend of Mexican food with India flavors. Everything just worked so well here at Mirra, 5 Stars were not enough for this restaurant!

We came into Mirra for brunch - the overall experience was solid, but I wouldn't say it was something I'd go out of my way for. The service was decent, as was the cold brew and chai. The food itself was also great - the Vada pav breakfast sandwich and chiliquiles were amazing. They had some really interesting menu items but many of them were seafood or beef - I do wish some of their more unique items (e.g. idli Benedict) had some veg options. The portions were large and food was good. Would be interested in trying dinner here.

Rasmalai Tres Leches & Avocado Chocolate Mousse

Mirra was a solid spot overall. The highlight of my night was definitely the lamb biriyani. It was perfectly cooked, packed with flavor, and easily my favorite dish we ordered. However, I would probably pass on the crispy taco next time. The scallop filling was good, but the shell kind of ruined it for me. I was also really excited to try the rasmalai tres leches but it ended up being just okay. The texture was more crumbly, almost like a cupcake, which caught me off guard and was not what I was expecting.

4.5 stars rounded up. Got to try this absolute gem and try their counter tasting menu. Flavors were spot on (although the tortilla got a little repetitive), service was uneven (chef was engaging but other servers clearly were new / didn't know the menu well) and drinks were ok. Top dishes of the night were the duck, the seafood kabob and surprisingly the beef tongue, which I was hesitant to try but it was so delicate and flavorful. It was a cozy night and the restaurant was packed on a Thursday night. Will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu.

Mirra might just have the friendliest and most attentive staff I've experienced in the city! From the second you take a seat in this vibrant and cozy restaurant, the staff is there to make your experience amazing. Our server not only helped us pick out some delicious food items, but he assured us that everything here was cooked with love. Our water glasses never went empty, and the table was cleared and cleaned in between several dishes. They clearly take service seriously!! As far as the food goes - everything we tried was amazing! My two favorite dishes were the chaas aguachile and the crispy tacos! The whole fish was also a masterpiece! I can't wait to go back!

Mirra is a true culinary experience from the minute you sit down. We came for the brunch. The place is cozy well designed and beautiful spot to hang out We started with their delicious and tasty coffee along with pastries. Unbelievable!!! Our breakfast plates were tasty well made and absolutely heaven in your mouth. And don't miss the cocktails. This place is a true good paradise.

Came here last night for my birthday along with my brother who has a birthday in the same weekend. We had a wonderful experience. The ambience and the service were incredible. Top notch for sure. Some of the dishes that really stood out to me were the taquitos, the octopus, the scalp crispy tacos, and all of the cocktails. Everything else is very good tasting. It's tough to make a fusion restaurant with two very distinct cultures, both filled with very potent flavors. I felt they did a very good job, and I would recommend it to others who would want to stop by. If you are sensitive to spices, though, you may want to be careful on what you order on the menu. (I loved it all, but my local Chicago mother had a difficult time with some of the dishes.)

Kelly had steak fajitas and deemed them amazing. The sopa Azteca is spicy and loaded with complex flavors. Huge portion, too, enough to share or take home. For dessert, the chocolate mole tart and the strawberry ice cream are superb. Palomas and margaritas are good, and the wine list is all very affordable. Get the Rioja or the Cotes du Rhone.

They give you a complimentary spicy trail mix. We started with the guacamole, it was okay. Then I got a traditional margarita, my partner got a pina colada with strawberries, and my kid got a pink lemonade (Marz Brewing made). The margarita was good, not strong but not too watery. For dinner I got the chicken fajitas, the waiter asked if I wanted just chicken which I though was odd because I ordered the chicken fajitas and I wasn't sure what he meant or if he meant no veggies, it came with veggies luckily. It also came with tortilla, corn, and a side of refried black beans with cojita, and rice. It was all okay. My partner got the lamb mole, it was sweet and savory, not spicy. And it came with tortillas. They have a lot of mole options, so if you're into that definitely come here to try! Overall it was just okay.

Delicious food, friendly waiter, militant hostess…read more We came to dinner before a standup performance downtown (Mateo Lane was hilarious, by the way). I arrived at the restaurant on time (4:30) and checked in with the hostess, who said I could only be seated when the entire group of three arrived. This seemed weird given the restaurant was pretty empty at this time, and ordinarily I'd order a drink while waiting at the table. Regardless, I went to Starbucks instead because I knew the other two were a few minutes behind. When I got back to the restaurant, my friend said the hostess told him we absolutely had to leave within 1.5 hours because we were late... which seemed odd because he may have checked in 15 minutes after our reservation, to an empty restaurant, that already refused to seat me on time. Regardless, the food was delicious. I had the Pollo in ChiChilo-- the mole was delicious, and I loved the chicken and sweet potato. I ordered the mole on the side, which seemed like a nice balance. Since the hostess wouldn't previously seat me, I had a lovely iced matcha latte with oat milk and half a pump of vanilla from Starbucks, which was a nice pairing. The waiter did ask if I wanted a shot of something with it, which seemed odd. Ambiance was cute, probably due for a renovation but seemed appropriate for most dining out occasions- dates, families, a day out in town. Note: the restaurant charges an automatic 20% gratuity which may explain the service. Keep this in mind to avoid tipping more than you intend. Overall, I would definitely come back, and the food and wait staff made up for the abrasive welcome.

Warm, homemade tortillas added to the perfect bite on top of flavor town green tomatillo salsa. The black beans was a good balance the rich pork flavors. Also, if the standard salsa was room tamed for.your liking; they have a good habanero salsa for the asking. Maybe too much foe most. Dessert- ice cream with fudge.. Great tasting of vanilla and chocolate, but wasnt quite over the top. The ice cream was nice and thick, but was a bit gritty for ice cream at an upscale place. Partly why I couldnt give it a perfect score. Service - attentive and intuitive. The waiter seems to know what we like and need without asking too much. Spicy pineapple Cocktail- good, strong, but not great. Couldn't really taste any pineapple. Cleanliness- clean and organized. Cost - affordable for special occasion. Restroom - fancy and clean. Ambiance - warm and relaxing, but a bit cheap with the vinyl or cheap wood veneer tables.
