Wanted to try some new, found this place in Yelp. So decided to give it a go. Walked in and was seated right away by a friendly waiter. Ordered the green rice with shank, the lamb chops with white rice and a grilled tomato. The shank so cooked to perfection soft and falling off the bone. The gravy from the shank paired will with the green rice. The lamb chops was great, but OH EM GEE who would've thought white rice would've been so tasty?! Everything was delicious. I really enjoyed their cornished hen and with shireen palau in the poultry specials section. Pieces had a nice char without tasting over burnt and the bones were very manageable. Pieces were tender and well marinated. The rice was bursting with flavor, especially the orange peel which brightened the whole dish. They also brough house bread with the cilantro chili chutney and white sauce which also paired well with the grilled chicken. Servings were generous and easily became two meals for me. Found this Persian and Mediterranean restaurant via a search of restaurants in Williston Park. I recall driving around and seeing so many places I haven't yet tried. Another hood worth exploring given I've found a few gems previously. I was here for lunch with a friend who loves Persian food as much as I do. She was the perfect dining buddy since we love lamb and Cornish Hen. We tried a little of everything - over ordered as planned (so we could take it to go) and to try more stuff on the menu. The wait staff was friendly and thought we were ordering for four! We said we just like to eat! I must say, the lunch specials were all great value priced meals (you gotta see the menu, I took a photo) but we couldn't resist the rest of the offerings instead. For appetizers: - The Combination plate of three "starters", our choices were the hummus (real smooth), baba ganoush (it was whipped nicely but I would have wanted more chunks of eggplant, this one was creamy not chunky) and the sambooseh (really good - these crispy turnovers are filled with vegetables and chickpeas). We enjoyed this platter with a warm basket of pita and yogurt sauce. There was a mint chutney served as well on the side. My friend liked it, I only sampled a little given I am a sucker for the yogurt sauce. - Tabuli salad, very light and refreshing. Had a hint of lemon, lots of tomatoes and parsley. There was only a little bulgar wheat, but it was nicely balanced with the red onions. Loved this. Since we were about to eat so much meat, this was a much needed "greens" to keep our plates balanced as well. Entrees - there was only one that stood out amongst the others, fair pricing, it was meant to be shared, good for 3-4 people indeed. We ordered the Combination plate. It had everything we wanted... barg, kobideh and joujeh. Served with a giant portion of basmati Rice (sumac provided on the side) and beautifully grilled tomatoes. This was really good. Met our expectations and only comment here, the Cornish Hen looked more like mini chicken pieces but still grilled nicely. A few sides were a little too charred but the meat was tender and juicy, that was most important. (We didn't finish obviously, saved half to go so we could save room for dessert)! Dessert time: - Persian Tea for her (smelled lovely), Turkish Coffee for me (looked like an espresso cup, it was delicious. My only comment here, at the bottom of the cup, I got my last sip with some ground bits. Not sure why but that was not a good last taste). - Faludeh, this was really pleasant. The creamy rice noodles were served in a dessert cup with Rose water. It was light and not over powering. The lemon syrup was on the side so you could adjust to your taste. And cherry syrup on the side as well...too bad no fresh cherries. That would have made the difference for the extra half star. - Zoolbia and Bamieh, that's what was on the menu but I think we just got the Zoolbia... It was fried dough dipped in honey and served with whipped cream. Not quite as pictured. But it was definitely sweet. And definitely freshly made. I was in sweetness overload. LOL. Overall, a lovely lunch. A solid spot for great food. Totally would recommend. Again, certain things could have been better so I can't give it a five star rating. But nevermind that, just enjoy the food and company you're with. read more

There's only street parking but it's so worth it parking elsewhere because the food is amazing! My personal favorites are the koobideh kebab (ground beef) and shish kebab (boneless chicken breast). The combination platter is enough to feed 4 people. The rice has a good flavor (not bland). The chicken and koobideh are very juicy and very flavorful! This place was absolutely fantastic and I cannot wait to go back. The food we had was exactly what I wanted, and there were so many interesting dishes to choose from on the menu. I had a delicious Israeli salad and split one of the chicken kebabs with my friend. It was ground chicken, which was perfectly cooked with the right amount of spices and very tasty rice to go along with it. We also had some baba ghanoush, which was flavorful and fresh, and we were delighted that they put free pita on our table when we sat down along with two delicious sauces. The prices were very fair for the amount of food we bought and we had plenty of leftovers. The food came out extremely fast and tasted fresh and delicious as everyone in our group loved their meals. There aren't too many places around like this restaurant so it's worth driving to taste the wonderful variety of Middle Eastern cuisine. They serve all the Middle Eastern classic dishes, but they also have some more unusual dishes, which makes the menu and options very exciting. The only downside is parking is a bit difficult for this restaurant, but I did find a spot on a side street which was a very quick walk. After having an outstanding dinner at Sami's Kebabs the other night (in Astoria), I was craving more lamb chops. I should have known better...it's really hard to beat the outstanding food at Sami's! I found the food at Miraj to be kinda bland and understated. I don't know why ethnic restaurants in Long Island feel the need to "dummy down" their food. I think there are plenty of people in Long Island who appreciate authentic ethnic spices and flavors! Here's what was for dinner tonight: ~ Baba Ganoush ($5.95) - not great but not bad; just ok ~ Lamb Chops ($19.95) - 5 pieces; just ok ~ Lamb Shanks ($18.95) - came with dill rice and 2 large lamb shanks ~ Beef & Chicken Kebab combo ($18.95) - chicken was barely seasoned and over cooked but beef was better All of the entrees came with HUGE portion of rice; rings of raw onions and a grilled tomato. Warm wheat pocket pita was served, along with their yogurt sauce. Thankfully, there was a jar of mince jalapeno sauce on the table. After we added loads and loads of white sauce and jalapeno sauce to our food, it tasted much better. Lastly, service was also "just ok"; not overly welcoming nor friendly but not totally bad either. I went to Miraj because I wanted to enjoy a special lunch. The ash was ok. The lamb kebab was inedible & tasted like pure salt. I drank all my tea to get the saltiness out of my mouth. The waiter begged me not to leave. He convinced me to order the filet mignon beef strips. He asked me what temperature I wanted, so I asked for rare. It came by out looking like shoe leather. I asked the waiter if I could pay for the ash & leave. He asked me to take the rice & sides because he'd just throw them out. I felt bad for not liking his food. Thanks buddy. I went back immediately with the food to the restaurant for a refund and subsequent to the owner trying to play mind games with me in an attempt to guilt trip me into not wanting a refund, he gave me a full refund, which is why I'm being nice in this post. I've been going to Miraj for years and the food is still excellent. While the decor is dated and the service is decidedly mom and pop, this is not what you go to Miraj for. This hidden gem offers terrific food at an incredible value. The menu is authentic and, honestly, there aren't that many authentic Persian places left. The kebabs were perfectly grilled to juicy, crip on the edges, perfection, and the saffron-infused rice was a fragrant delight. I am personally a big fan of their stews. My 9 year old picky eater child is willing to eat the salmon there. That is saying a lot about their quality and preparation. Try asking for some tahdig for an authentic experience. The decor is simple but this is part of the charm. My family and I come here to relax and have authentic, consistently excellent food. I don't come here to order bottle service and a tomahawk ribeye and taking pictures of every dish. The place is cash only but what also sets this place apart is its affordability. You get top-notch Persian cuisine without breaking the bank. It's a testament to the fact that sometimes, the most memorable dining experiences come from unassuming places.
