For years, my wife and I have been going to Afghan Grill - especially when we lived just down the road. Now that we live on the other side of the island - we cannot go as often - but every time that we do make the trek, we are greeted with open arms and smiles from the family who owns the place. My wife is a celiac, and has to eat gluten free - and no matter how long we have gone between visits, the matriarch owner remembers this about us - and just what our favorite entrees are! The kabobs... the salads... and oh, dear Lord, the eggplant and lamb stew... to die for! We all like to try to buy/support local establishments - and this one makes it easy because it is so damned good - and affordable. If you've never had Afghan food - expand your horizons and give it a try - you will NOT be disappointed. Great place for a gathering with friends or family. Top notch! read more

Encountered the most disgusting, monstrous excuse for a human being at this restaurant. It was the employee who works the front counter. He was disrespectful, condescending, offensive, and displays severe psychological dysfunction. Delicious Afghan food in New Hyde Park! They have a great combo meals to share. We got the Dinner for Four and tried 4 Kabobs and 2 stews. It was a good way to get a variety of different meats and dishes. The taste was good and the amount was huge. They gave us way too much rice that we had a whole to go container with rice. We tried their ice cream which was pretty unique as well. We all left there very full. The space was nice and kept clean. My friend and I were craving Kabobs so she recommend us come here since she has been wanting to try this place for a while. The place itself is very peaceful and we immediately felt like we would be too loud for this place, but it was fine. They have a variety of different Kabob options as well as combination platters and other food options. They provide butter and naan for the table before you order the food. We decided to order: -Bolanee as our appetizer: this was really good, very crispy on the outside with potatos on the inside and white sauce as the dipping sauce. -Steak Kabob: This is what I got - they ask how you would like it cooked and I got medium. The meat was very tender and not dry at all. The rice was also very nicely seasoned and since I absolutely love white sauce, their white sauce went super well with the food. -Ground Chicken Kabob: This is what my friend got and she gave me some of the chicken to try. It came with two pieces of chicken kabob, and the chicken kabob was nicely seasoned and the flavors were really good. She really liked their green sauce as she doesn't like white sauce. Absolutely horrible experience. My family and in-laws (8 people) came here to celebrate an occasion, so we brought a cake (which was a surprise) and some wine. After ordering 4 appetizers and 3 entrees, a man came out and in front of the whole table told us "You brought your cake and your wine and you only ordered 3 entrees? That's not how it works. Every person has to order an entree" with an extremely rude attitude. We were never informed about this policy before sitting or ordering , nor is it on the menu anywhere. It was extremely unprofessional and was unecessarily embarassing. There are right and wrong ways to convey that type of message if needed, and this was the wrong way. Great and food and really nice people! We ordered hummus, sambosas and bolanee. We were so hungry that I forgot to take pictures of those but they were delicious. We love all of the sauces although the green may be my favorite. For entrees, we ordered kabob barg, shrimp kabob and Tikka (lamb) kabob. All were so delicious! The brown rice was so flavorful! And the onions really complement the meat and rice dishes. We were too full to order desserts. read more

Usually we dine in this restaurant and the portions are regular sized and very tasty. This is the only reason I am giving 2 stars. I placed an order to go today. It was for 2 kabobs combo special. The total cost was $32. Now for $32, you can see below what they tried to pass off as a two kabob combo special. My husband questioned this portion size and they gave him a bs excuse about they changed their containers. I try to support local restaurants but I do not like to get ripped off. So if you're dining In, go for it. Stay away from the taking your food to go. They will rob you! First trip to the Afghan grill as there are many closer to where I live however since we were in the area and were in the mood we decided to give this a try. FamIly owned and run business I met the owners kid Omar who was a super nice and friendly guy. He was the one who took our order for our dinner and drink. We got the combo grill since there were 2 of us and we substituted the lamb chops for only $7 extra instead of getting one of the chicken skewers. With the lamb chops we also got the barg. The food was delicious, they had this cayenne pepper sauce which I had never seen before which had a bit of a kick to it which was also very good. Overall the cleanliness food and service were terrific, since it was my first time here and we only tried two of the meats I will give this a 4/5. This spot is one of my favorites in LI!! The quality of the rice and meat has always been spot on. I have not had one bad experience here, always consistent!! My favorites are usually the chicken and lamb kebabs and their salad and vegetable dishes are seasoned well and very flavorful. I wish there was an option to add on an extra meat as there is usually more rice than meat but other than that no complaints. It comes with: Tray of seasoned basmati rice (enough for 6-7 people) Flat bread (great when reheated) 3 sauces (tart green sauce, spicy sauce, creamy white sauce) Choice of 4 meats (there's an assortment of lamb, beef, chicken kabobs and cornish hen). My favorite is the cornish hen, really tender and flavorful. Choice of 2 stews (egg plant lamb, okra, spinach, pumpkin). We usually get the eggplant lamb stew and okra. Spinach is also really tasty but less worth is than the okra which is more of a novelty. 2 containers of salad with dressing. Standard salad with lettuce, shredded cabbage, and carrot. Overall great place. Always a go to for my family! Definitely worth to take out so you can save the leftovers and use the sauces/bread for another meal or snack. I'm sure anything you order will be good, but do NOT forget to save room for dessert. Most baklava you get is extraordinarily ordinary. This was not, served warm and full of spice flavor. This was the worst Afghani food I have ever had. I should have walked right out when I walked in and smelled the stale air but the place has great reviews and I was hungry; I figured the simple meal I wanted couldn't be so bad. Well, the longer I sat there, the more I noticed how dingy the place actually was - it seems as though bare minimum cleaning has been done over a long period of time to get to its current state. Horrible ambiance. Anyway, I ordered mantu and a chicken kabob meal which came with a salad. The dumplings were difficult to cut through, not soft as they should be. The chicken kabobs were dry and super salty, likely to try to cover up how old they were. The rice was stale and old. And the worst part was the SOUR white sauce. It made me sick. I typically love the white sauce that comes with Afhgani food but this was just inedible. I wish I could get my money back. I would not ever return here or recommend this place to anyone. read more

Tonight my boyfriend and I had dinner at Afghan Grill. We enjoyed the food, the speedy service and friendly staff, but we thought it was weird that it was so quiet in the restaurant that you could hear a pin drop. There wasn't even any music playing. It was just awkward. We saw that the space was awkward. Before ordering, our server brought over nan wish 3 different sauces (yogurt sauce, green vegetable based sauce, and spicy red sauce). Although I couldn't have the bread (it wasn't gluten free), I tried the sauces with my meal and we bought agreed that we loved them all. We ordered dinner for 2 combination, which comes with 2 meats, salad, rice, and a stew or vegetarian dish. We chose spicy lamb and Cornish hen with pumpkin as our vegetarian dish. The meats were great, but I expected the lamb to be juicier. Although some Yelpers have said rice is bland when they serve it to you, they have the sauces for you to choose and mix up. I like that they give you that option! I think my favorite out of this combination was the pumpkin and rice. The portions were big, but we wanted to try dessert so we ordered the homemade saffron ice cream and pudding. Both were balanced with saffron seasoning, but we enjoyed ice cream the most. On a rainy Saturday night, Bonnie G. and I trekked to NHP to try Afghan Grill to see how it compared to the Hicksville venues of the same ethnic food. It is situated between a Vegan Indian and Southern Spice restaurants and the parking is tight and if you dont park on Hillside Ave the trek is too far. Anywho, getting back to the restaurant. Its very quaint with nice music playing in background an is clean and cheery! Theres several tables in the front and a larger dining room in the rear...where we chose to sit. The servers are on top of things and took care of our every need. For appy's we had Hummus and an Afghan version of a Kreplach with a nice sauce on it. BTW, on the table they give you some warm pita which is like eating paper...no real taste and thin...does not add or compliment the meal. They do have Naan but you have to order seperatly. Now the mains....Bonnie G. had the Lamb Shish Kebob ordered MR with a wonderful rice with carrots and raisins...kind of sweet and went well with the Lamb. We were disappointed that no Grilled Peppers or Tomatoes of any note came with the dish. I had Lamb Shank which came buried under the rice but was really good once I found it. We enjoyed our meal and might return if in the area but would not make it a destination for a drive from Syosset as we could really have the food in Hicksville which is as good if not better! read more

My family really enjoys the food here, but as a vegetarian it's a solid "okay." My main gripes are that there's no protein if you don't eat meat/fish, and there's a fair amount of repetition of sauces. The vegetarian appetizers we ordered were the cucumber yogurt salad and the warm eggplant spread. The eggplant was delicious. The cucumber salad was fine, but didn't have much flavor. The mint was dried, not fresh, so it was sort of subtle. I grew up eating an Iranian cucumber yogurt salad with dill, so maybe I'm biased toward something more flavorful, but it was disappointing. While you wait, there's a basket of pita and three sauces. The green (mild) and red (hot) are too thin to spread or dip, and the third one is a standard white sauce, like you get on a falafel or halal cart food. The pita is neither warm nor fluffy; it's just a vehicle for spreads, like the aforementioned eggplant appetizer. Seriously, get that eggplant. It's fantastic. For my entree, I ordered the pumpkin dish. I looooove squash in pretty much all forms, and it seemed like a unique meal. It wasn't bad, but didn't have much seasoning aside from a yogurt sauce on top. It was just a thicker version of the same yogurt and mint from the cucumber salad. The portion was substantial and it came with a giant dish of rice, so I ate about half and brought the rest home. If I come back, I'll probably try one of the other vegetarian options. All entrees come with a salad. The salad was a small bowl of iceberg lettuce with a lot of white sauce (the same one that was on the table). The lettuce was nice and crunchy, but otherwise the salad was forgettable. The grilled vegetables my parents got instead of rice with their kebabs was also disappointing -- there were a couple pieces of bell pepper, a couple zucchini rounds, and a wedge of mushy tomato, but otherwise it was a plate of onion. The veggies were all unseasoned and the zucchini was so undercooked that it was still hard and spongy. The service was uneven; our waiter was fine and the food came out in a reasonable amount of time, but the busser was forgetful. She took the water carafe to refill, and didn't return with it. When we realized that she must have forgotten, we politely asked for water when she came by eventually to clear appetizer plates. She did come back with the carafe after that, but didn't acknowledge that she had set out to refill it some time back. If it had been a busy night, we wouldn't have minded much, but there was only one other table occupied at the time, and at least two staff on the floor. I'll probably find myself back here because my family enjoys the meat and fish dishes, but I don't look forward to it. read more

Due to the pandemic I completely stopped taking out food. Finally I am back and first take out was from my favorite kebab place. I bought dinner for 6 with 6 kebabs which comes with two stews. I love their eggplant and lamb stew, the lamb is so tender and very flavorful. I haven't sat in for while but they haven't lost their touch the chappli kebabs and chicken jujeh kebabs all are just as delicious. I would recommend this kebab place to anyone who likes flavorful and good quality meat kebabs. read more

This was my first experience eating Afghan food and unfortunately, I was very underwhelmed with Afghan Grill Kabob House. I drive by this spot on Hillside Avenue from time to time and given the positive Yelp reviews, had been meaning to try it for some time now. We ordered take out midday on a rainy, chilly Saturday: - Kashk-e-Badnjon (eggplant) - I rarely enjoy eating eggplant but this was prepared really well. The best thing we ordered. The pita bread that came with our meal was very thin, dry and flavorless. Is that how it's supposed to be? Nevertheless, it was perfect for eating with the eggplant as it didn't overpower the already tasty appetizer. - Dolma (stuffed grape leaves) - These were huge! Much bigger than normal, they ended up being okay. - Kabob kobideh and lamb shish kabob - Meh. These two entrees were also both just okay. Meat was a bit dry and difficult to bite into. But still somewhat flavorful. I was expecting something more. Also, meat to rice ratio was disappointing. We were given way too much rice which I think cheapens the dish. -The yogurt sauce was what saved the meal. I ate with my Russian friend who is much more familiar with this type of cuisine. He was not impressed at all and explained that this establishment would never survive in Brooklyn or other areas where the food is more popular. It's really a shame because the woman working there was so pleasant and the decor was very pretty, clean, and welcoming. I picked up on almost a summery-California theme. The restaurant was empty but that may have been due to the current weather conditions and time of day. It certainly wasn't bad... but next time, I would prefer to go to an area with a heavier Afghan/Middle Eastern/Russian population for a more authentic and flavorful version of this meal. read more

My boyfriend and I were craving for kabobs one night and could not find a good spot around us (we were somewhere in Queens) So after searching through Google & Yelp, I found Afghan Grill in the New Hyde Park neighborhood of Long Island. We live in Long Island & New Hyde Park is fairly close to us so we were happy about that. We were not disappointed with our first visit. The service was great and the food was sooooo good!! Everything was on point. My boyfriend and I have become regulars and the manager already knows us lol. We always stick with the rice and kabob dishes as well as their hummus which I have to say is the best I've had in a restaurant. I usually get the salmon kabob and my boyfriend usually gets the lamb kabob. The waiter had recommended their stews so next time I eat there, I will definitely try their stews. What I love about Afghan food is that their cuisine features Turkish, Middle Eastern, & Indian flavors! We were trying to remember when Afghan Grill opened in the neighborhood and can't believe it's been over 12 years. I also can't believe I haven't updated my review in over eight years. I'm pleased to report that AG has only gotten better! This family restaurant still makes you feel so welcome. Their simple salad with yogurt dressing is a refreshing start to the meal. I had the Cornish hens kebab. Once again, the pieces of hen were perfectly cooked.A nice crisp skin that gives way to juicy meat that melts off the bone. The kebab is served with a bed of their excellent rice that is amazing. I like to mix both their yogurt sauce and green sauce with the rice - I can't scooped that stuff in my mouth fast enough! Keep in mind - AG is BYOB and there isn't a good convenient place to get beer or wine close by. After all these years I finally thought to bring a couple of beers from home. Is it biased to say I love Afghan food if I'm Afghan? :P Some of my favorite foods in life are crunchy, fried things so the potato stuffed bolanee and meat & chickpea filled sambosas made me happy. I loved the homemade hummus too, with the really thin and crispy at the edges pita bread they serve with it. We orders the tikka kabob (beef) and chicken breast kabob. I liked both of them but I was surprised at how tender the tikka kabob was because sometimes beef (or lamb) kabobs can easily get dry or chewy. I actually liked it better than the chicken and I always go for chicken. I didn't feel the need to drown it in yogurt or chutney because the flavor spoke for itself. Good kabob doesn't need sauce (I'm just obsessed with yogurt sauce and I get judged sometimes. No lie.) The chicken kabob was good as well but next time I want to try the jujeh (Cornish hen) kabob because it comes out juicier. The rice was fragrant and more heavily spiced than other places but in a pleasing manner. The two things I died for though are their white/yogurt sauce and their ice cream. Their white sauce/yogurt sauce is delicate and satisfying. Sometimes it can be heavy on the mayonnaise so this left me feeling less guilty and it's just really delicious. The homemade ice cream also was delicious and I loved the rose water/saffron flavor. The place is clean & cozy and the staff is friendly & attentive. Had a great dinner here. First, they start you off with pita and three sauces- a yogurt based sauce, a spicy sauce, and a green sauce. They're all delicious and the pita tastes fresh. The meals also come with salad which is topped with a yogurt based dressing - simply yet delicious. For the main dish I got the chicken kebab which comes with a big heap of multicolored rice. It was so good, my only complaint was that I wanted more chicken. It tasted so good when you make a pita pocket with chicken, rice, and sauces.
