Mirage Diner is one of those places I end up at without planning it. Like you're in Midwood, you did a couple errands, everyone's getting cranky, and you're like "fine, diner." And it always works. You sit down and you're like oh nice, plenty of space... then you look up and somehow every booth is taken and there's people standing by the front. It fills up outta nowhere.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Food is what you want from a diner -- big menu, big portions, comes out hot. I mostly do breakfast stuff even if it's not morning (omelette/home fries/pancakes depending on the mood). The home fries are actually good, not those sad bland cubes. Eggs come how you ask. Pancakes are fluffy. Coffee is just coffee, but they keep refilling it so I'm not complaining. Service is straight diner energy. They're moving fast, not doing a whole friendly routine, but they're paying attention. If it's slammed you might wait a bit to get seated and they'll be kinda brisk, but you're not getting ignored. One of the rudest and most aggressive experiences I've ever had at a diner. A waiter was openly yelling at an 84-year-old woman over her tip because she was apparently $1.06 short of what he expected. He stood there pointing at the check and pressuring her for more money. It was embarrassing and completely unacceptable. Even worse, management did absolutely nothing -- they didn't step in, didn't acknowledge the situation, and acted as though this behavior was normal. To make matters worse, the very next day my credit card was compromised. That card had only been used at this establishment and nowhere else in the previous six months. I returned a few days later to calmly speak with management, and the response was just as bad as the original experience. They were rude, defensive, dismissive, and completely unprofessional. I strongly suggest that if you decide to eat here, pay in cash and do not hand over your credit card. read more

Called to explain and a manager named Larry became aggressive and sexist--a total chauvinistic pig--calling me "honey" and "baby," and refusing to give his name. He told me to return the food, then acted even worse in person, shoving the menu at me and saying he didn't care. Staff admitted he fights with them often. Terrible food, worse treatment. Mediocre food; I did not order anything complicated. I ordered the French Toast breakfast special and it is largely a disappointment. After getting it wrong the first time (they gave me scrambled eggs when I asked for over medium), I gave it a go. Two hefty pieces of Challah bread which have a weird, oily taste to them, very bland eggs, and a particularly salty piece of ham. For $19, it is too expensive to justify the Sunday morning breakfast indulgence. I like going out for breakfast on the weekends, and this one is not to be remembered. I also tried their chocolate chip cookie and it is also a disappointment, even though I ate it, largely because I was just too hungry to leave it alone. The sketchy characters I saw when I walked in did not help my cause. There are other options that are better than this one. Go find them. read more

Honestly horrible food. Stopped by this morning to get some breakfast before a doctor's appointment and got the challah French toast with a side of bacon. The challah French toast was some of the worst I've ever had. It was oddly both bland/tasteless and weirdly undercooked/soggy. I had to drown it in syrup just to make it edible and only ate the smaller of the two pieces. The bacon was also horrible. It was either old or overcooked or both. It wasn't crispy or chewy, just kind of felt like you're eating cardboard and tasted probably about as good as cardboard tastes. It also didn't really look like bacon but more like a bacon flavored dog treat. The only reason I'm giving this place two stars instead of one is because the waiter was very sweet and the coffee was decent. I won't be coming back here though because if you mess up something as simple as French toast, I'm afraid to taste anything else here. read more

Old school diners which in the 80s and 90s were everywhere have become a dying breed in nyc as more and more close up shop so Ive been looking for a decent diner burger. A basic no frills big cheeseburger with all the usual fixins. Mirage makes a solid burger. I get mine with sauteed mushrooms and swiss. Cooked exactly as i request its a very satisfying burger and comes with good,crispy fries,a couple of onion rings,a pickle and cole slaw. I have also tried that Brooklyn diner fave that you probably couldnt get anywhere else the Chinese Roast Pork sandwich. Roast pork on garlic bread with Chinese mustard and duck sauce. The pork was flavorful if a bit dry. Recently also had the Turkey dinner and for the price (22.95) you got plenty of carved turkey,stuffing,gravy, potato side,veggie side,salad,choice of soup,2 onion rolls and a handful of breadsticks. I kept pulling more out of the bag but....they forgot the cranberry! How can i eat turkey without cranberry??? Well I mean i did and it was good but it couldve been great! It could be better, but considering the overwhelmed staff who served us, the quality we enjoyed was quite good. I was there for a luncheon with former colleagues. I must say that my medium rare London Broil was perfect. Matzoh ball soup was good, but a bit salty. The matzoh ball was tender and tasty. Salads others enjoyed were generous portions and very good. We decided to come for dinner because my husband's aunt orders from here and always says how good everything is and she said they have a great lime Ricky. Well they do and the food was excellent! Now I've been dying for pastrami for weeks but too darn cheap to go get one. The Mirage has pastrami and corned beef, also brisket which I'll try next time. I took a shot and got the open faced pastrami sandwich. I'm thinking ugh you idiot...IT WAS DELICIOUS! Just as good as any kosher deli if not better. It smelled heavenly and it had just enough fat to keep it from being dry and not where you have to constantly cut fat off. I found out they won an award for their pastrami! The hot open faced sandwiches comes with soup or salad, I opted for salad which was fresh and crisp, potato of choice and a veg. We will be going back and I suggest you all do too! A great diner to go to if you live in the Coney Island/Sheepshead Bay/Gravesend areas. Service - Quite good, better than what I expected from a diner. I've only come here after dinner rush hours, close to closing and the service was still good. Waiters and busboys are attentive and helpful and quick to assist you. Food - It is decent here, for what you would expect from diner-quality food at least. I ordered the roma panini during my last visit and it was just okay. The bread wasn't really grilled long enough and it was just lukewarm almost cold and not hot enough like I expected it to be. There wasn't enough dressing/sauce on the inside which made it taste a little dry apart from the peppers. When you order, they bring a complimentary bread basket, pickles, and coleslaw - which is very typical of diners. I will say that the coleslaw at Mirage is by far one of the best tasting coleslaws I've had out of all establishments I've been to. Normally, you don't look for that sort of thing when reviewing a diner or restaurant but I think it stands out when you're waiting for your food to come out. Cleanliness and Ambiance - Overall I didn't find anything unruly or out of order, it feels pretty warm and comfortable in here with the lighting, the seating, and the decor inside. It definitely has the diner feel inside and out. Price - I do think that post-pandemic, the prices have gotten pretty inflated but it's not like super-overpriced. It is a bit too expensive for what I believe diner food should cost but at least it's not bad quality for what you pay for. I paid $11 for the roma panini which isn't too unreasonable but definitely wouldn't consider going to a diner too often at the prices they charge for most of their menu. Parking - They have a small parking lot but parking has never been a concern when I typically come here at night. My friend was racially discriminated against at Mirage Diner, 717 Kings Highway, Brooklyn, NY 11223. On Saturday 20 April, 2024 at approximately 9am, I visited the Mirage Diner for breakfast with a friend. We are both black. The maitre d, an older white male, perhaps in his 50s-60s, seated me first because my friend went to move his vehicle to an open space in the Diner's carpark. Upon his return, my friend assisted an older gentleman who was also white, through the first door to access the Diner. The gentleman's son or caretaker who is also white, in turn thanked my friend for his earlier assistance and opened the second door to allow his father and my friend to enter the waiting area at the diner. The maitre d's station is directly in front the second door. As the three men gathered, my friend told the maitre d, that I was already seated inside. In response, the maitre d said to my friend, "You do not belong here!". Both gentlemen who came in with my friend, heard this exchange. I motioned to my friend to let him know where I was seated. As he entered the booth, the maitre d came by and to him "I''m sorry, I was joking." Before my friend could tell me what occurred, the maitre d came by again and said "I was joking, I did not mean what I said." At this point, I knew something happened. My friend then told me about the encounter. Coffee was served but we were not going to stay where we are not welcomed. My friend, left the diner and I went to the maitre d to pay for the coffee which was worth $4.68 and said to him, "my friend did not think what you said was funny." The maitre d then indicated that I did not need to pay for the coffee. I did not say anything further and left. As we exited the car park in the vehicle, the maitre d came outside and clasped his hands like he was praying as if to apologise again. There was no further interaction and we left. To the server, who brought us the coffee, Sir, please know that you did nothing wrong. We left quickly because we assessed that we were not safe or comfortable. To the maitre d, you showed your true self on Saturday morning. You missed the point of the earlier interaction between my friend and the two gentlemen when they entered the diner. Being human, courteous, exhibiting mutual respect comes naturally for some people. Clearly, you did not receive that memo. There is no reason why we will accept the disrespectful behaviour you exhibited. I will exercise my right not to patronise any establishment that endorses or exhibits racist attitudes. My friend and I subsequently went to Parkview Diner, 2939 Cropsey Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11214. We were warmly welcomed, looked after by the serving staff and had amazing food - the California omelette and the gyro platter along with the international coffees were so good. read more

I got their roma panini (mozzarella, roasted peppers, tomatoes, and mixed greens) and prune juice. The prune juice was the only good tasting thing here. On the price side, it's questionable though. I expected it to be in a big prepackaged bottle since it was over $5. But it was basically in a grande sized cup. This isn't starbucks and the juice wasn't anything out of the ordinary so I definitely felt cheated there. The panini was terrible. I ordered from here wanting to try a panini from a new place that's not panini rustico. It seems that i'll have to stick to the latter. The panini here had three panini marks on top. The bread and mozzarella were tasty despite it not tasting like a panini. But, the red peppers and tomatoes took up majority of the panini. What a gem! If you're looking for an old school Brooklyn diner that serves the community, this is it. The friendly environment, warm ambience, and delicious LARGE portions were exactly spot on. My family and I went for an early breakfast on Saturday morning. The waitstaff, owner/greeter, busboy/person were so welcoming and attentive. Coffee (caffeinated and decaf): hot and fresh. We had the Leo omelette (smoked salmon), corn beef hash and omelette, and one self-created with lots of veggies. It was impressive how many veggie options they had! And selecting egg whites wasn't an extra charge - that is unusual. They all came with coffee/tea, white or wheat toast pre-buttered (old school, yes), and home fries or hashed potatoes. We all got the hashed which were perfectly crispy and browned! Did I mention the large portions?? We also requested some mashed potatoes with gravy. It was not on the menu and 7:30 am! But they had it and it was perfect too. They had a private parking lot, and very convenient seating options: booths and tables that seat 4 (that could be moved together, I presume). Open face roast beef sandwhich with broccoli ad Cream of Turkey soup. Mirage Salad with Salmon Coffee was hot and fresh. Unsweetened Iced Tea with lemon was also good. Water, Cole Slaw, and Pickles along with some onion bread and breadsticks while we waited for our meals. Food was good Staff and Service was amazing. Terrible. Hair in food, tasteless omelette. Toast and drinks come separate despite making it seem included in the menu. Worst part is half cash and some tip on the card was left. Lady at counter rudely asks how much tip do you want to leave (you should allow the customer to write it on the receipt not put them on the spot) I go on and in her language she talks secretly about the tip left to her colleague. This review is for their delivery! I ordered the 2 eggs combo (comes with 2 eggs, toast, and your choice of potatoes) - I got the eggs scrambled and French fries ($7.5) Also ordered the pancakes. ($6.75) They have pretty cheap food even for delivery! I ordered off grubhub and they had a $5 off first order deal on there. My total came out to only $10 after the coupon and before tip!! Delivery times vary of course depending on how far you are and how busy they are but it was pretty fast for me and the delivery guy was super nice ! From what I could tell from our short interaction. The eggs combo was good- fries were kind of soggy unfortunately but it was delivered so kind of expected. Toast was a little too burnt. Overall good though! Pancakes were yum. Wish they provided more butter- only had enough for like half the pancakes ;( but they did give a LOTT of syrup. Only used 1 of the 3 containers they gave ! Among the many diners in Brooklyn, yet still one of few remaining, this diner stands tall retaining its very old school flair and serving style. It may sound cliche or dated, but in terms if what my grandparents speak on as to whats precious in a diner can be found here. They start you off with a delicious mayo base coleslaw that is still fresh enough to have a bite in the veggies present. Alongside this is a bread basket, and two of my favorite pickles, sour and kirbys. Unfortunately for this trip, I wasnt as hungry as I usually am, getting a full meal to review - so heres the 1st if perhaps two reviews. I actually started at a milkshake. You're typical run of the mill, honestly nothing too special about it. This was followed up by a BLT.. or maybe I had that after it.. either way, good sandwich, but again, there wasnt any flair. Going again recently though and running into some of the desserts, the molten lava cake was actually amazing and thats coming from me(sweets arent my thing). I called Mirage and before anything else they apologized and began making my food again . I called seamless they were nice and understood the problem.
