That location quoted a little over $1,000 for that repair. I called around to numerous service stations in the Allston/Brighton/Watertown area, and Mings quoted me at about $850, which was much lower than any other location. Mings communicated very well throughout the process: they emailed every detail of the repair, to keep a paper trail. I really appreciated that, and found it reassuring. JULY 9 , 2025 Ming is either money hungry or prejudice. I came in today to get a Serpentine Belt replaced. Early before 9am like he request. He sends me emails to come by. He welcomed me in. He checked his computer then approached me with aggression accusing me of not doing any business with him in over a year. Not even getting an oil change. He asked me to leave his shop and said he's doesn't want my money. Then told me to go to my regular mechanic. I do not recommend Mings Auto Repair 1. After reading past reviews and being told about this place, I stopped by for an Alert message diagnosis on my 2010 GL Mercedes. I specifically asked office manager Corey why they would charge $188 for initial diagnostic, and whether it was simply connecting their diagnostic scanner, and I was told that they spend time with the car, and that it's much more than simply reading the scanner. After walking around for an hour, I came back to see they hadn't moved the car into the bay, and I went for another walk about. After 45 more minutes I received text alert from them that the car is "all set" and a picture of the scanner with an alert message was included. I walked back to find the car in the same exact spot (I had marked the spot) and was told that the repair would cost between $1500-2000!! They charged $188 for connecting the scanner and sending me a picture of it. That's it, probably took them 5 -10 minutes. They hadn't moved the car one inch and kept me walking around for nearly 2 hours to justify the rip-off fee they charge for diagnosis. It's a scam, and they're liars and cheats! I don't know if they're good mechanics or not, but I know they're untrustworthy and should be avoided. Your local repair shop, gas station mechanic has the same device and will likely give you the diagnostic reading at no, or very little, charge. Buyer beware! PS The issue with the car is stability control program (ESP) and even the dealer charges $800-1000 to fix it, not $1500-2000. A recent alignment may have caused the sensor to be malfunctioning and may be corrected by re-doing the alignment. Will report back. Either way, lesson learned. $188 cost to avoid falling into a much bigger trap at Ming's Auto. Shame on them. read more

I've been bringing in my Audis (202 TT and 2018 Q3) for years and Ming has always done a great job at a fair price. If a new part is outrageously expensive or unavailable from Audi then they will work with me to find good quality replacement or remanufactured parts. First time and last time customer here. TLDR, the shop will squeeze you for every last drop of money you can give and feels predatory towards people who don't know what should be done. If youre someone who is cost conscious and don't want to feel preyed on just because you lack the technical knowhows of cars, I suggest you stay away. Came into the shop with a check engine light and a p0171 error code on my acura rdx. Shop kept pushing for a diagnostic and I went with it putting my trust in their hands. They found that the problem turns out to be a busted air vent to which they charged 146$ for labor and 104$ for part to fix(these parts goes for around 20$ on autozone). After that fix was done, a new flashing check engine light comes on with error code p0304. Shop tells me that its most likely an ignition coil issue and quotes me a whopping 610$ to fix that (292$ on labor, 250$ on part, and 50$ on supplies) and it was at this point that I suspected that this shop is a complete rip off for customers who are cost conscious. I called around the area and multiple shops says that they charge way less than the quote Mings gave me. (other shops around charged 200) Also I realized that you would do need to move a part of the engine to get to the ducts for the first initial fix. Shop claims its an act of god, but I think its pretty rational to think that maybe while working on the ducts, the technician inadvertently did something to set off this new alarm because the two systems are so close to each other. No accountability whatsoever. I mean it would have made a lot more sense and honest of them if they had just said "maybe it was a matter of time before any mechanic opened this up and set it off, we were just unlucky it was us who opened it." Im just thinking why would I pay close to 300 for labor if they cant even guarantee that they wont break another part of my car. Given their track record, its not like they can justify their high cost. And for full transparency, Cory did say that the car felt like it was "driving in mud" when I first dropped off the car with just the p0107 error code, but from my experience my car hasn't really changed in performance since I got my car long before the error code showed up. Also to their credit they are completely upfront with their costs. Just make sure you ask for a detailed invoice at the end breaking down the final costs because they were originally going to charge me over 500$ (could've been an honest mistake but im wondering how many of these honest mistakes arent caught if the customers don't bring it up) read more

Fixing german cars is a hassle and expensive, but they do a great job of being transparent with the issues at hand and recommendations of how to approach repair. Went here when my car was making a noise on acceleration. I had previously gone somewhere that claimed it was the transmission but I knew it wasn't, so tried my luck here. We drove around and I pointed out exactly when the noise was happening, and the person with me said "yes yes I definitely hear it, it sounds like rattling." I said "No, it doesn't sound like rattling, it sounds more like grinding" and pointed out when it was happening a few more times. He seemed to get it and say "oh yes yes I hear it now." It was a very, very obvious noise, so I was suspicious, but whatever. He calls me later and says there are three problems that all need to be fixed, and another one that is "very dangerous" that needs to be fixed but is more expensive. I ask which is responsible for the noise and he says one of the first three. I say ok, and ok that fix and one of the other ones that is cheaper. I come back to pick up my car and he says to turn it on and notice the noise is gone. I remind him the noise only happened on acceleration, and I'd like to drive it. Noise is still there, loud as ever. He says "oh well there were a lot of things wrong with it so we couldn't fix them all." I say fine sure whatever and pay the $200 or something to basically tighten some screws. Ended up taking it to Good News Garage in Cambridge, identified, explained, and fixed the problem within five days, for $80. Go there instead, this place WILL pressure you into unnecessary repairs. read more

They charge far more than qualified competitors. I got my repairs done half price elsewhere. I had an issue with suspension, needed an oil and transmission fluid change. I went to Ming's and was charged $75 for the estimate then quoted almost $2000 for all repairs including $1400 for front struts and stabilizers and $450 for transmission flush. I decided that seemed far too expensive and checked RepairPal which seemed to confirm that theory so I called around and found that reputable shops offer FREE estimates because they stand behind their prices being competitive. Then I got the $1850 suspension work and transmission flush (flush, not a change) done for less than $900. Sadly I'm still out that $75 estimate cost which I understand charges for their time, but other businesses know how to be competitive without charging for for the estimate. read more

Over the years, I visited many auto dealers and other auto repair shops in and around Boston (I felt they all just wanted my money and never really fixed my car), so I found none as trustworthy and honest as Ming's Auto Repair. It was refreshing to be able to leave my car in "good hands" with obviously well trained Audi mechanics (way better than than any Auto Dealer in Brookline) and know that all the services will be handled in a very professional manner. I came here a few years ago to get a clutch replaced on my car. I was a poor college student at MIT and couldn't afford the $1000+ quotes I was getting everywhere else. Ming fixed my clutch (disc, plate, bearing) for $800 flat, knowing that I was a poor kid back then. It has served me well for years since. What I like about this place is that they are internet/email savvy. No other place sends you emails as well as these guys, and they've been doing it for years! My clutch work was done in 2009, and they're always on top of their emails. Most places promise to call you when it's finished, but they NEVER call back! (like NTB, A-Z Auto). His quotes do seem pretty high, but I believe it's because he buys all OEM parts and doesn't install aftermarket parts, for risk of liability. So I'd say that's the only thing, the price. Have been going to Ming's for years. Originally, I lived across the street in Allston and he was the closest repair shop to us. When my VW broke down (this was 2001 or so), I went to who was closest. That breakdown was the best thing that ever happened to me, since I wouldn't have found him otherwise (it's a non-descript building). Since, he's been a trusted resource for years. Then when we moved to Watertown, he was always there for me and my family with reasonable rates, excellent service, painless communication and most importantly honesty and valuable advice. He'll always drop me off and pick me up from work when a repair is happening, and will even get the car from our house in Watertown and drop it off later that day. I also like the fact that, unlike many auto repair places, he WILL use email as a primary method of communication if you so choose. Much easier when you're in the daily grind at work and find it difficult to trade voice mails or phone calls. We've since moved to the 'burbs, but since I work close-by we'll still be using him. Unless it's a new car/dealer warranty issue, there are few other places in the Boston area that I'd consider going to. read more

Stay away from this store, they have Chinese service on their website, however, my mother, a 60+ year old (she understands English but does not speak it fluently), asked the owner the price of the repair service in Chinese, and after he offered a ridiculously high price (with a very standard Mandarin accent), he started to put on a foul face and looked very impatient, yelling at my mother over and over again. He doesn't speak Mandarin, only English. As my mother was getting ready to go back to the car, she heard the owner give another white customer a quote that was a full third of what she had been offered. This owner is a very bad person, so please be careful if you have an elderly driver at home. I forgot to mention that the owner has a standard Chinese face. read more

I took my used car to Ming's to get an inspection (they offer free inspections for VW owners if you find the ad online). They honored their deal, but the service was sub-par and the prices expensive. They had my car for the day, were slow in giving me an estimate on repairs (I had to call repeatedly), and I felt like they were hiding something from me. I had a problem with my exhaust and they recommended a full replacement from the catalytic converter back, which was going to cost $800, plus a "full tune up" for another $800 (I spent $2700 on the car). I was aghast, and when I took the car to another mechanic he gave me a price that was a little more than 1/2 that for both repairs, an inspection, and additional work for my oil tank. I felt that Ming's kept me in the dark and tried to exploit my ignorance of cars - they didn't let me see the underside of the car or the diagnostic for the check engine light. Also, I think they put a big scratch in the side of my car and on the hubcap. If you need a free inspection for a VW and you think you'll pass, look online for the ad (search "free MA inspection VW" or something). If you need any other substantial repairs, look somewhere else to get a better deal. I'm sure the quality of work at Ming's is satisfactory, but I wouldn't go there for it. read more

I'm shocked to see a few negative reviews for Ming's. These guys are great. I have been bringing my Acura and Honda here for several years, and they consistently are honest and reasonably priced. They are clear with estimates, call with questions, and have great hours. More than once, I have had issues that seemed big (like an alternator) and they call to say it's something smaller (was a wire for the alternator). Many of my coworkers take their cars here too and we all have had great experiences. read more

I have a 1999 Mitsubishi Galant that I was sure was on its last leg because of the severe knocking and shaking it was doing while I drove it. Turns out it wasnt! It just needed a pricey repair ($1200). Before the repair was made, Ming explained everything to me in detail and even mentioned that it wasn't essential and woudln't interfere with any other car components. I'd prefer to keep driving this car for another year or two and decided to get the work done. The end result was amazing. Very high quality work done, very efficiently with a 3-year national warranty to boot. He even checked in after the repair to see how things were going. I also checked with others to find this price was pretty reasonable. It's sometimes hard to find an honest and reliable mechanic and I'm glad to have found one in Ming. read more

I'm kinda appalled at *any* 1-star review for Ming's Auto Repair. I've been bringing my car to Ming's since 1984. I've also known Ming since the third grade so I think I know the guy pretty well. I've brought my three Pontiacs and one Chevy to Ming (yes, he can and will fix American cars!). I also know that many car owners will bring him cars to fix after trying other shops first (problems that other shops can't fix!). As for my 2007 Grand Prix, Ming is keeping it alive in spite of my wishes. After my last visit, it sounds like it'll actually finish the next 5 years of life that Ming expects it to live. I'll have to wait that long for my next car; another five years of no car payments. My super-charged V6 sounds like it did when I got the car 11 years ago. And told me I needed a new temperature sensor. I agreed to get to work done. While I was dreading having to do this (general distrust of auto shops), I had to in order to pass the Massachusetts state inspection for the car. Last year, I purchased a used Audi A3 with left over extended warranty coverage. I've been driving Japanese cars all my life and this was the first German car I've ever owned, so I was a bit nervous about buying this car used, especially as an independent sale. I wanted to make sure that the car was in good condition, and if anything needed maintenance I wanted to use my extended warranty as much as possible to keep my costs down. That's when I found Ming's Auto. They diagnosed the car, told me what needed special attention, and what was/wasn't covered by extended warranty. They were very fair, and worked with me to keep the cost of maintenance down. I like the way they approach problems in small chunks, like a 'bottom-up' approach, as opposed to a 'top-down' approach where issues are tackled at the highest (most expensive) level down. One day my check engine light came on and found out it was an cylinder misfire issue. Those problems are really hard to debug, but they took small steps to ultimately determine the root cause and was able to make the problem go away at a very very reasonable price. There was another issue I had Ming diagnose, and it turned out it was outside my extended warranty coverage. And although he could have repaired it himself, he looked up the manufacturer's warranty period and found out I was still covered. So he told me to take it to the dealer for a free fix instead! How much more honest can you get than that? My car is still running great, even though I put on 600 miles a week. Thanks to Ming! read more

Out of the five different auto shops I've brought my car to in the city, Ming's is the first place where I've felt like they really care about me and my car. It's very easy for mechanics to take advantage of customers who don't know cars, and I'm so thankful that Ming isn't like that. Several times over the course of the two days of working on my car, he was sending me pictures of the damaged parts. It was a simple gesture, but meant so much to know that I could trust him to be honest and transparent about the work being done. When all was said and done, he had even taken the time to get my car washed and vacuumed. On top of that, he's a funny, humble, and hard-working guy who genuinely values each customer. I've been going to Ming's for a few years now, and he was recommended to me by a family friend. I like how he outlines problems to the car and tells you which are the critical fixes to the car and which aren't to help you decide what needs to be taken care of. When he does find an issue, he gives pictures and explains the underlying issues of why specific problems need to be addressed. You never feel pressured to have a repair done without knowing why or if it's worth it. On top of that, I was recently had two back to back emergency repairs and he did the second as a complimentary repair since I was a loyal customer. The only reason I don't go there much anymore is that I moved across the river and I'm in a Mfg. warrantied car at the moment. ming's automotive is a very small business however they are very reasonable and totally honest... Which is especially favorable for a female car owner. I started with my Volkswagen Jetta TDI, which was a diesel. The prices were extremely lower than dealerships and they even set me off several times with no charge. However I did give them some money as a gratuity for their honesty. Now I own a Volkswagen Passat and they've been totally wonderful servicing it. It's a two bay garage, with no seating area but there's a Swedish bakery up the street where you can wait. I highly recommend them for car repairs. I had the cv boots replaced on my 2003 Audi allroad at Mings. After receiving a very high quote from my Audi dealership, I contacted Mings for a cmparative estimate. They offered a much better price, so I went with it. I'm glad I did, Ming was personal, professional and informative all the way. Once the CPO warranty expires, I intend to use Ming for my service and repair and maintenance. The only drawback is the location and size of the shop. Both times we decided not to do any work on the car as it was not essential at that time and there was no charge both times! I really appreciate his honest, straight-shooting attitude. I have to admit, after reading the reviews here, I was a little worried. But I figured that the convenience of the location was worth the risk. And I am glad to have tried them! Compared to my previous experience at VW dealers, Ming's service was excellent. Not only does Ming's get the work done cheaper, they even noticed that my aftermarket rims were secured improperly with the original bolts...AND they corrected that with very minimal cost. Having studied engineering, their assessment that the bolts were improper made a lot of sense. What surprised me was that the dealers never noticed that!
