What do you do when you are still 2.5 hours away from Telluride and you are getting hangry? You find a great Mexican restaurant and split half the menus with your friends. Off the main drag in the town of Montrose there are many options, but not one the boasts the menus of Cocina de Luz. We had to get their famous Mexican roast chicken, loaded up with sauces, tortillas and beans. We also decided to get some tacos to try their pulled pork, loaded with more rice and beans. And my buddy saw manudo was on the menu and had to get a bowl (and by bowl, I mean they served it in a GIANT BOWL), slow cooked in sauce over night...it's not my favorite "meat" but they did it justice. We washed it all down with Jarritos (OBVI) and got a side of guac to slather onto leftover tortillas to fill up the belly. Everything was well seasoned. The staff, probably thought this rag-tag bunch out of an United Colors of Benaton-looking Advertisement, was hilarious, but still treated us with Colorado charm! You've got many options for Mexican food in Montrose, but swing into this kitchen if you want those subtle and delicious notes that signal no sauce packs were used making this grub!! read more

Stopped in for lunch. They serve breakfast, lunch or dinner menu items all day. Food was very good. We didn't have the Mexican food but I'm sure it's authentic Mexican. read more

Good find -- unbelievably nice owner (I think?), very kind. Interior looks pretty divey (think an old-style fast food place with booths), but the food is solid and definitely homemade. I liked the chicken the best (the pork was a little too fatty for my taste, but I don't have a high tolerance for fat). Complimentary bottles of water, and the rice and beans were really good. We tried three tacos of each meat they offer, a quarter chicken (which my friend devoured!), and a chicken torta (my favorite). The freezer of authentic mexican popsicles was pretty cool... read more

This is cut/paste of my review from a few years ago (2010?). The place wasn't on the Yelp map yet and my review hangs out in a type of Yelp purgatory. I'm am so glad to see that people have discovered Pollo Azado. I really had high hopes for this place. On a recent road trip, we got sort of stranded in Montrose for an extra day due to the weather up on Lizard Head. So many of the restaurants in the area were chains, seemed to be closed for the season, or kept weird hours. But, I spotted a small, completely unassuming little place on 7th, just off of Townsend: Pollo Azado. This place uses the "Do One Thing" model of business, and their one thing is azado. Seriously, if you want mexican and tacos and burritos, you'll need to go somewhere else. The guys were very friendly, and the meal was great. 6 bucks and some change for a 1/4 white chicken, with a small amount of beans (not refried), a side of rice, a grilled pepper and 4 corn tortillas! Tear up the chicken, mix it all in a tortilla, and enjoy the simplest of pleasures. The Azado rub was flavorful, but delicate and all of the ingredients were high quality and extremely fresh. I regret that I have but one road trip to give to Montrose and their simple, yet refreshing, Pollo Azado. read more

Decent, I'd give them 4 stars if the gave an option to mix enchiladas. I wanted 1 chicken and 2 cheese, but they only let you have 1 or the other. The other gripe is the amount of lettuce/tomatoes on the side. Double would be adequate, triple would be better. It helps with the dry chicken. read more

Thanks to Yelp I once again found a place that I probably would not have noticed or tried when driving through Montrose. Got the 1/4 chicken and loved it. I'm a sucker for good hot sauce and they have it along with friendly service read more

Bare-bones and simple, this little hole in the wall has exactly what you can hope for in a quick and inexpensive restaurant. The staff is eager to please and proud of their food, as they should be: the chicken is moist and full of flavour with beautifully-browned skin, the chile rellenos were as good as any I've tasted, and the iced tea is delicious. Don't miss it! read more

I had high hopes, given the ratings of this place. First, the service was great. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Now, the food was below average. The chicken plate literally tastes exactly like slightly repurposed store bought rotisserie chicken. The culinary experience was so disappointing. I could do the same thing buy buying a chicken from the deli at Walmart. I wouldn't go again. read more

This place raised their price extremely high out of no where. All the table were dirty when we sat down. never has bottle of ranch or ketchup. So we have to ask other people for them and closes early so you cant go later in the day after work and take years to make a burger. We also found hair in our food. read more

Good food. The chicken is fantastic. The burritos are massive, and the tamales are unique.

Wonderful friendly and very accommodating service. This is what customer service is about. The proprietor obviously loves what he is doing and it makes it a pleasure to dine here. I lived in Mexico for 7 years, his tacos are the real deal. His chicken is marvelous. If only these small, unique places could offer local food, I'd pay the extra. Even more if they used quality produce free of contanimates that we encounter to pay less. Enjoy this place immensely mui rico y mui padre! Gracias y me encanta! read more

Delicious, fresh food, exceptionally friendly staff and service and complimentary bottled water. Only downside is they don't recycle the plastic water bottles. read more

Quality food and excellent service even though we crashed their place 2 minutes to closing. I'd say 5 stars if the servings were larger, or if they offered a supreme burrito for buck or two more! read more

Best legit authentic tacos in town! It may look a bit dodgy from outside but you walk in and the place is very clean and inviting. The staff are quite welcoming and make solid suggestions. I've had the chicken tortas and chicken tacos. Both are delicious. If you like real Mexican street tacos, this is the spot. read more

Decent. Chicken is totally overpriced and something easy to cook at home no flavor needed. Won't ever go back would rather eat Taco Bell.

Stopped here for an early breakfast while traveling. Food was excellent, sausage links were delicious, special cheese sauce on egg skillet is outstanding. Seemed like many locals come in for coffee and breakfast. Waitress was friendly and attentive, even while working the whole floor. Would definitely stop again read more

We have enjoyed the food every time we have gone to Mimo's. Our family normally goes to dinner on Friday nights and would frequent Mimo's more often if they were actually open. Every Friday night we have attempted to go in the past several months they are closed. They do have a sign in the window on the Townsend side of the building that shows they are open, but clearly they are not. Not sure if the owners were out of town or closed due to a issue personal, or business, but there were no signs on the door to indicate if the closure was temporary or permanent. Started seeing life again on FaceBook a few days ago, so will try again.... read more

You won't regret stopping here for a meal. The steak tacos were delicious - the meat was seasoned very well and the portions were good. I should also mention the refried beans are probably the best I've ever had, there was so much flavor! Pricing was good and the staff was friendly. read more

Incredible hole in the wall. Ordered half a chicken shared family style. Homemade chips, tortillas, salsa, beans and rice with roasted chicken. Food was delicious! Also blown away by the service. The owner waited on us and was fantastic! So glad we checked it out on our way through Montrose! read more

Delicious! We stopped here because of all the 5 star reviews and I'm gonna have to add one more. I had the 3 taco plate with rice and beans. I couldn't make up my mind so I had one beef, one chicken, and one pork. All 3 were perfect! I wish I lived closer so I could eat here all the time. read more

Amazing food & great service! The beans, tortilla, salsa, and chicken, (and the waiter/owner himself) everything was just fantastic.

Wonderful chicken and tamale dinners with excellent service! Unassuming ambience but wonderful food.

A simple, inexpensive and tasty local spot. No alcohol. Great for takeout. The prior reviews that praised the chicken were accurate.

Clean, diner type feel. Food was alright. Everything seems slow and disorganized, with wrong items brought out for each of the two parties in the restaurant. read more

Enjoyed a good American breakfast on a Wednesday. The bacon was tasty and arrived crispy, just as ordered. I need gluten free options and the waitress suggested warm corn tortillas instead of toast. My sweetie ordered patty sausage and was also happy with his breakfast. read more

The food is really good but the service is a little slower than most places. I had the chicken fried steak sandwich and my coworker had a smothered burrito and both were filling and delicious. I will go here again. read more

Good food even the burgers are fine. The taco plate is cheap and tasty and the service is fantastic.

Excellent food- excellent service!! We are frequent diners at the Grand Junction location so when we Yelped for a restaurant in Montrose, we were happy to see a Pollo Azado here! This is a much larger restaurant with a larger menu. Fantastic, as we knew it would be! read more

Amazing service, incredible food!!!! Amazing chicken dishes. Got the half chicken meal with mixed tortillas and it was off the hook. The salsas on the side were very unique and tasty. The crew is friendly excellent service. Worth more than what you pay for!!! read more

As good as everyone says! Had a half chicken plate and an ice tea for $13. A lot of food, great flavors, fresh and hot!

Food was great but service was not. We went for lunch but ended up getting breakfast, which is served all day. The Cali breakfast burrito was delicious and my friend really enjoyed his Mexican omelet. The portions are very generous. Unfortunately, our server didn't pay much attention to us and we had to motion for her a few times. The food did arrive quickly, though, and we enjoyed it very much. We will definitely go back but I hope the service is better next time. read more

They have a super friendly staff. They do a great job with breakfast and have a lot of options. I always leave full and happy. Would recommend read more

This Lil cafe is so awesome everything about it from customer service to the food is totally delicious their Burritos! The chicken plate with rice and beans with either corn or flour tortillas handmade !ummm ummm! read more

We always stop for Pollo Asado while traveling by car cross country. The Pollo Asado here was the best yet! The restaurant was clean and the staff friendly. read more

You're on a road trip in northern Mexico, hungry as you pass through a small town. You see a handmade sign for Pollo Asado. Grilled chicken. Damn this chicken is great, crispy seasoned skin, moist, served with green and red salsas, both complex, fresh tortillas, grilled scallions and jalapeños. But no, you are in Montrose, Colorado, where Yelpers have correctly made this very modest place their top rated restaurant. read more

Friendly staff, reasonable prices, and generous portions. Bonus points: the TV was tuned to Jeopardy aka one of the greatest gameshows ever. I didn't think the food lived up to the Yelp hype, but--hey--it was cheap and plentiful. I believe that is worthy of four stars. read more

Best Mexican food I've had in YEARS. My husband was hesitant to try it based on the hole in the wall look from the outside, but I convinced him. The place was empty just given the time of day (late afternoon on a Tuesday). The place is spotless and the service was friendly. We started with chips and guacamole. The chips were fresh, hot, and delicious. The guacamole and salsa were authentic and tasty. I got the pollo asada and my husband got the pork adobada burrito. We both loved our meals (and each other's because we shared). All the sauces and sides were amazing. The tortillas were fresh and hot. Everything was so fresh, delicious, and spiced perfectly. I don't live in the area, but I found my new go-to place in the area when I'm passing through. Definitely check this place out. read more

Stopped in for lunch. Amazing marinated pork burrito with really friendly service for a great price.

So glad we gave this place a try!! We found it just as the previous reviews reported: service extremely friendly, restaurant clean with cute touches, and the food was delicious!!! Thankful for Yelp :) read more

Delicious and authentic! The marinated chicken was tender and juicy and the service was exactly what was expected from a hole-in-the-wall restaurant - homey and personable. The prices were very fair with a 1/4 chicken meal only costing $7 and a 1/2 chicken only costing $11; the meal comes with pinto beans, rice, and tortillas. There is certainly not much to choose from to eat in Montrose, but if I'm in the area again I will absolutely stop by for some more chicken as Pollo Azado was FANTASTIC! read more
