We were in town for the county fair and decided to skip the carnival food for one night. After consulting Yelp, we were excited to try the highly rated Mexican joint Pollo Asado. We wish we hadn't. The salsa was tasteless and frothy, like it had just come out of the blender. Fact: 80% of restaurants are closed on Mondays in Montrose. I found this out the hard way. But do not fret, Pollo Azado is open and that's pretty much all you need. My husband and I stopped by this little hole in the wall on our way from Telluride to Grand Junction and were more than satisfied with our meal. I really don't know what stood out the most: the super friendly staff (the guy taking our order is one of the nicest fellas you'll ever meet), the delicious juicy chicken, or the homemade chips, salsa, and beans. All amazing. And all for a really reasonable price. The restaurant itself is simple, but super clean and we found it to be cozy and comfortable. The lady who delivered our food was really sweet and came back to see if we needed anything else, which you don't get in most order-at-the-front type of restaurants. Have been in Montrose for 4 days. Try to go to someplace different each day if possible. Mimo's exceeded my expectations. Simple breakfast, bacon, eggs, hash browns and 2 blueberry pancakes. Way too much food for me but well worth the stop. Walked in on a Saturday morning with most tables empty. Wondered if that was for a reason. Try it, you might be surprised as I was. Went to yelp to find a different breakfast place in Montrose. Found this place. Had the biscuits and gravy with eggs, hashbrowns and bacon. I'm of the philosophy that breakfast should be the most affordable meal of the day. Pricing was a buck more from menu photo about a year ago. Nevertheless it was very affordable. And the portion was ridiculous, it was brought out on to seperate plates! Food quality and taste was awesome. The service was workman like but not fawning. Always fresh and just good food. The tacos are excellent as is the salsa. The smothered burritos are great too. For a twist, try the cheeseburger and fries. It is both a take out and sit down eatery and the music tends to be loud, but it is comfortable and super casual. A great find! My order was taken by an extremely friendly man who genuinely cared about our experience. The wait for take-out was around 15 minutes for the five of us. The food was delicious! We did encounter a small problem, we ordered several enchiladas to be vegetarian, and confirmed this with the man who took our order, unfortunately we received them with chicken and were unaware until we were too far away. Decent, I'd give them 4 stars if the gave an option to mix enchiladas. I wanted 1 chicken and 2 cheese, but they only let you have 1 or the other. What do you do when you are still 2.5 hours away from Telluride and you are getting hangry? You find a great Mexican restaurant and split half the menus with your friends. Off the main drag in the town of Montrose there are many options, but not one the boasts the menus of Cocina de Luz. We had to get their famous Mexican roast chicken, loaded up with sauces, tortillas and beans. We also decided to get some tacos to try their pulled pork, loaded with more rice and beans. And my buddy saw manudo was on the menu and had to get a bowl (and by bowl, I mean they served it in a GIANT BOWL), slow cooked in sauce over night...it's not my favorite "meat" but they did it justice. We washed it all down with Jarritos (OBVI) and got a side of guac to slather onto leftover tortillas to fill up the belly. Everything was well seasoned. The staff, probably thought this rag-tag bunch out of an United Colors of Benaton-looking Advertisement, was hilarious, but still treated us with Colorado charm!
