August special: scallion pancake burger
Mia H.

I think because I might've had such high expectations that I was very let down. The interior of the shop is cute and simple. You order at the counter and the food is brought to you when it's done. When I came, there were only two people working but it got a bit busy, so service was a bit slow. I got their August special: the scallion pancake burger. I saw this on a Tiktok and really wanted to try, but was very let down. The scallion pancake didn't really taste like a scallion pancake (there were no aromatics) and it was soggy (not crispy at all). I think they also put too much sauce so it overpowered any other flavors in the burger. Overall, I thought it was really salty and I wouldn't recommend paying $17 for it. I would say though, that they are more known for their dumplings, so maybe try those?

The restaurant is very minimalistic. You order at the counter and then you can find your own seat. There were also two small tables outside. The pan fried dumplings and vegetable were good, but expensive for the portion size. Overall an okay spot for a quick meal. I wish they offered free water for customers who eat in the store.

Made a quick stop in here specifically for these Peter Luger steak bao buns. They were bomb. So delicious and they even came with the signature chocolate coins from Peter Lugers. We also tried the pork and chive dumplings and the chicken dumplings. Both very delicious and freshly made. The cucumber salad was pretty flavorless. Good place for a dumpling quick fix. A little pricey.

Mimi Cheng Chicken Dumplings

Cute and modern looking dumpling and noodle place with high prices and average dishes. The only positive aspect is the premium ingredients. (if we are to actually believe they used organic chicken in their Mimi's original). The Dan Dan noodles with soba noodles, instead of wheat was a nice touch, I guess, but where was the ground pork, the preserved mustard? How can this dish even claim to be a dan dan noodle dish? This macrobiotic Dan Dan noodle is for the Erewhon crowd, not for anyone wanting the real thing. If you're used to the authentic grub, you'll likely be disappointed. You're better off getting your noodles at Grand Sichuan (for the same price) and your dumplings at any of the dumpling places Robert Sietsema has ranked on Eater (for half the price).

Pork and Chive Dumplings

~ Pork & Chives Dumpling ~ Dumpling skin is thin, the edges are slightly on the harder side, but the bottom is crispy. The filling is quite juicy, though I'd prefer to have more chives. Flavour wise it's ok, just a tad bit saltier then I prefer, but I don't feel very thirsty after eating them. Very poor value for money though, I don't think they're worth $17.... you could get them for way cheaper at China Town/Flushing. Will I be back? No It's average dumpling, but with premium price. I don't think it's worth me paying that much for some dumplings. I'd rather make them at home (I'm Chinese I know how to make my dumplings, plus ingredients are cheap with minimal seasonings required).

This was my first time here. I ordered the March special: March special x FINI Pizza: a medley of our favorite FINI pizza toppings with locally-sourced Italian sausage, pepperoni, roasted shallots, mozzarella, parmesan cheese, and herbs with a side of housemade pizza sauce. 8 dumplings, pan-fried. The dumplings were delicious! They had so much flavor. Please consider adding this to your regular menu! My only complaint is that the drink selection was lacking.

Chicken January Special x Sweet Chick Fried Chicken Dumplings and Waffles

I really am sad that I didn't like this. I might return in the future to try their ordinary dumplings but I do think as someone who grew up eating dumplings this is quite the case of fusion confusion. Got the January special which were the chicken and waffle dumplings. I will praise them for the actual dumpling itself - nicely fried, crispy, and a dense heaping of juicy chicken meat inside. It makes it a little more justified that it was like 17 bucks for four dumplings (and two scallion waffles). The waffles were just ok, a little soggy, not crispy, and not a strong scallion flavor either. An interesting combo of flavors but not that enjoyable tbh. Spicy Dan Dan noodles - love a dan dan noodle. Just so you know it's made with soba noodles which gives a different texture and flavor being that they're made from buckwheat. However they lacked the things I enjoy from dan dan noodles - bits of pork meat in a nice spicy tangy sauce that clings to the noodles. Just underwhelming and very heavy on the soba flavor with a very mild spice level.

If you need a quick dumpling fix in the East Village, this is your spot. The dumplings are deliciously fresh, you can see them literally making it in front of you while you wait. The signature Mimi Cheng dumplings with chicken are my favorite, but the pork and chive ones are also very good and have a unique triangular shape. The dan dan noodles are excellent as well, although it does have a little bit of kick so avoid if you're very sensitive to spice. Prices are a little on the high side at $15 for 8 dumplings.

This place looks so cute and unassuming from the outside that I popped in for lunch. Three small tables outside provided a sunny perch for a few diners. The choice of vegetarian dumplings did not look super interesting so I opted for the Dan Dan noodles. Well, the noodles themselves are cooked perfectly, that much is true. But the sauce does not deliver and I'm afraid this dish is all about the sauce. It's a little spicy but it's mostly nothing. There is a bit of flash boiled bok choy that comes with it which is nice. Unfortunately this didn't quite make the cut for me. Perhaps the dumplings are better.

I'm so happy this spot is still open ! And they have outdoor seating! Stopped by on a Friday night to grab some burger dumplings. Holy crap , these dumplings were so good! They joined forces with Emily's burgers to create this dumpling and it is out of this world amazing.

The space is cute and the dumplings are decent. I felt the service here could have been a bit better. The person behind the counter was a bit rude when we didn't notice the tiny little revised menu at the bottom (apparently the main menu is no longer valid). I was a little disappointed they weren't doing their 50/50 and only had one veggie dumpling available. The veggie dumpling is delicious though. The greens are just ok (felt a bit greasy) and the cucumber salad, while fresh, lacked flavor. I don't think the sides here are great, but the veggie dumplings are nice.

French onion soup dumplings

The dumplings here are indeed costlier than what you can get at your average Chinatown dumpling shop, but pricing for food is all arbitrary and no one can make a profit selling dumplings for 25 cents a pop in the East Village, so I think the complaints about their prices are moot points. The rotating monthly specials are always so inventive and are what keep me perpetually keen on return visits. This time it was the French Onion Soup dumplings that caught my attention and absolutely delighted my taste buds. February is a good month for a special like this because we're all just seeking something warm and comforting to get us through these winter blues. While it might be tempting to share a few options with friends, I think the move here is to get a plate to yourself so you can have the joy of biting into the al dente dumpling skin and letting the cheese and flavorful soup fill your mouth over and over again. Yes the experience is as sensual as it sounds. Douse your dumplings in their house made chili oil for extra oomph.

Mid dumplings for a ridiculous price. Find a spot in Chinatown or go to any other cheap Chinese place instead

Dish highlights include the shrimp and chive dumplings, beef chow fun, and my personal favorite, the stuffed eggplant. Other items were a little bland, like the turnip cakes and har gow, and the pan fried shrimp noodles were awkwardly plated and made them difficult to eat. I also wish they had rice noodle rolls, which I didnt see on the menu. Really what pushed it to 5 stars to me was the service. We came as a huge group of 20, with a baby and stroller in tow, and they handled everything without so much as a grimace, just an outpouring of helpfulness. They sat half our group at a round table and the other half at a rectangular long table and also helped us navigate dietary restrictions, asking specifically who in the group had those restrictions. The menu is labeled too, so you know which items are vegetarian or gluten free. At one point our helpful server noticed we hadn't really touched that awkwardly plated noodle dish and offered to replace it with another. We didn't take him up on that as I'd find that wasteful but I thought that was so attentive and earned them a generous tip. The space is nice looking, and the food came out very quickly. We also didn't break the bank, even with plenty of drink orders. Dao's is an easy recommendation, especially when you factor in how seamlessly they handled our chaos.

I was browsing for places with scallion pancakes and I came across this restaurant. I saw they had a scallion pancake beef rook which I'd never seen before. It was fried and crispy on the inside with tender beef on the inside, that was slightly savory slightly sweet. I had the roll on its own, which made for a light meal, but it can also be enjoyed as a large snack. It was a little greasy, which can be expected, but not sure if I'd get it again. I did think it was innovative though. The most impressive thing about the restaurant was actually the space. I came to pick up my food and was surprised to see this beautiful place. The outside is unassuming and nothing special but inside has the aesthetic of an old Shanghai restaurant. It's ornate and slightly quirky. It's also really big, bigger than I expected. Even the bathrooms had traditional Chinese flare with the sliding doors. Definitely worth checking out,

It's also nicely decorated, which makes you feel like you're in China. It's definitely for a younger crowd with how loud this place gets. We had a huge party, so we ordered an array of dishes to share family style. Some of the most memorable dishes were the Mapo Tofu ($13.99), Hutaoli Roast Chicken ($43 for whole), Spicy Pot Potato ($19), Roasted Green Beans ($22), etc. All of the food is good, but definitely pricey. While the food also came out quickly, our drinks came out towards the end of our meal. It's a good spot for big parties as it never got too busy even on a Saturday night. They also have private rooms. The live music was fun, but also made it hard to have conversation.
