Delicious! Perfectly cooked pizzas. The big salad really is BIG. It has so much flavor while still feeling light.

Typically Detroit-style pizza places outside of SE Michigan tend to be sad, pale imitations of the real thing. I wasn't expecting too much as I walked into Milly's for dinner but after eating there, I'm glad to report that Milly's bucks this trend. The restaurant itself is hip and cheeky and, while not the most traditional, with more modern toppings and techniques, they certainly cook a mean Detroit-style pizza. Milly's is only open a couple of days a week and according to their website, they sometimes can close early when the run out of dough. As with a proper pizza, it takes time to bake the pies, approximately 25 minutes our case. If the restaurant is busy, I'm sure it could take even longer; just be patient in any case. Featured Pizza, Small ($21) - Milly's changes their special every Thursday. For this week, they had a pizza with new potatoes, asparagus, green goddess dressing, and edible flower petals. Let's start with the most important part of a Detroit-style pizza - the crust. The crust here is seriously top tier, even compared with the top pizza parlors in Detroit. The bottom is fried until crisp, with a golden crust that looks lacy from all the browning and bubbles in the dough. The cheese crust straddling the edges is perfect: crunchy, cheesy and super savory. The interior crust is chewy, airy, with a crumb filled with small bubbles. The crust is the same texture throughout the pizza - there aren't any undercooked, soggy areas like some popular places in Detroit. The toppings at Milly's adhere to a more modern aesthetic. The potatoes, adding that nice earthy potato flavor, are smashed thin so that they're tender and creamy. Some of the red skin on the potatoes pops up above the cheese, allowing the heat from the oven to crisp them up a bit. The tender asparagus adds the vegetal and somewhat bitter and sweet notes. It's thinly sliced so that it doesn't turn the pizza soggy. The layer of cheese is tangy and creamy, giving a decent cheese pull on the edges where they intersect. The green goddess dressing seems to be made in house, adding fresh herb and umami flavors. Finally, the dried pansy flower petals are there mainly for aesthetics - they don't particularly add any flavor or texture to the pizza. (5/5) Milly Bread Special, Small ($13) - The special this week was ramp pesto. This is essentially a small 4-square pizza in size, but cut into 8 triangles (party style). It uses the same fantastic dough base as the pizza, featuring the same crisp, chewy crust, and thinner cheese layer so that it browns to a crisp. Instead of the standard toppings, it's brushed with butter and studded with garlic, then dressed with thinly microplaned parmesan to give an extra umami kick. The parmesan is added after the pizza is taken out of the oven, allowing some areas to develop into a delicate lace and others to remain thin strands. Ramp pesto is dolloped on top of each slice of bread. The pesto takes the best parts of both garlic and onion and adds a bit of a unique allium spiciness with the vegetal aroma really coming out. The rest of the dish serves as the perfect canvas to highlight the ramps. (5/5) Milly's is every bit as good, or possibly even better, than some of the top rated modern Detroit-style options in Detroit. I highly recommend making a stop here if you're in town - it's one of the best places you can get this style of pizza. Bathrooms - Two small unisex rooms in the back. Great overall pizza, salad and setting. The basic salad we had was actually rather fresh. Great dressing. Ordered two pizzas, a large really is a good size. The dough is the real winner, I was impressed. (It's usually the weak part.) The white, mushroom pizza was great. Only wish they had beer (they had lots of sodas). read more

Grabbed takeout from Milly's and it was SO good. My husband and I both got the fried chicken sandwich and it was HUGE, crispy, and so so flavorful. We each got the fries as our side which were not exactly FRIES so much as they were more like hand cut chips. Not going to lie, when I opened the bag I was a little disappointed (since I was pretty psyched for a traditional french fry) but then I had one and OMG they were so good. I am a total believer in the chip/fry hybrid they've got going on over there. I got the garlic parmesan flavor and my husband got the salt and vinegar. Both were good but the garlic parm was the best of the two, hands down. Takeout was easy. We called to place our order and my husband ran in to pick it up. Grabbed a couple of root beers from the cooler and it was the perfect dinner back at our AirbnB! read more

My absolute favorite spot in Hancock! Their food is inventive, delicious and helps support other local businesses. I love their approach to food that is seasonal, fresh, locally sourced, and creatively pushes the edge of what Detroit style pizza can be. The specialize in Detroit style pizza: square, thick focaccia like crust, crispy cheesy edges, and great toppings. Each week they add a new special and I'm always intrigued to see what kind of funky things they come up with. I haven't had a bad one yet and they have had some genuinely surprising toppings like peaches on their pizzas! My go to is the Ginger Baker: a pizza with pepperoni, honey, and Calabrian chilis. A perfect sweet spicy combo! Everything is always really fresh and delicious. Keep in mind though that cooking a Detroit style is like cooking a deep dish pizza, it takes a while. So be prepared for a decent wait time. I wish it could be a little faster but I understand that fresh, individually made pizzas like this take time. Just be prepared! We also tried their chorizo fries which were very good. Super crispy despite lots of toppings. Lots of flavor. Can't wait to go back to try whatever is new on the menu next time I stop in! read more

I would give Millys 1,000 stars if I could. This is the best pizza in the entire state. We ordered a few pies while visiting our son at MTU. All the versions we tried were ridiculously good. I'm going back next week and may order pizza every day. What a treat. Order Millys now and enjoy! read more

The place: Walking in, I didn't know what to expect. Spousifer and I were desperate for some decadent salads, and the Google Machine told us this could be the place. Inside, it feels like a cross between a pub and a coffee shop. Lots of wood, comfy booth benches, and richly colored rugs. The location: 2 hour free parking out on the street in front. The food: Spectacular. Everything I hoped for and more. I got the autumn salad which had this lovely vinaigrette. The roasted butternut squash was perfect. HUGE portion and so easy to eat every bite. Spousifer got a chopped salad sans salami which was also delicious. The olives were great pops of acidity. Our friend got a patty melt with onion jam. As a vegetarian, I only sampled some of the onion jam which was gorgeous. The service: I greatly appreciated the rundown of how things work at Milly's. You go to the counter, grab a menu, and order at the counter. Food comes to the table. Our server was so kind and even grabbed some of our empty dishes mid-meal. Next time: I want to make sure I get dessert. The cookies looked delicious and I was so close to getting some. read more

Ok so not done eating yet but here's my thoughts so far! The blond at the register is super cute and bubbly personality which is helpful when you need good professional kind assistance with ordering. She was knowledgeable about their product. Seasoned well but bit spicy but ok with me sooo, Good take out so must better fresh done. Clean place and good vibe inside. Unique pizza choices. Loved the variety and creativity of pizza and salads. The ginger baker pizza had cheese and sauce, lots of pepperoni and roasted peppers but also had Calabrian chili oil and honey. These items together was fabulous and like nothing I had before. The amount of pepperoni was huge with pepperoni in each bite! The P.C. Salad is fantastic and interesting with rainbow carrots, black currants and cumin vinaigrette ! Nice environment with outdoor patio seating. It probably isn't used much due to the cold weather but a cute and quiet area. Friendly and efficient service. Good prices too. The ice cream was very good, simple soft serve of chocolate or vanilla but great texture and flavor. read more

Great Detroit style pizza! We picked up a special with pineapple salsa, bbq pork and cilantro. I know it sounds weird but it tasted great. Great local pizza! We had the daily special, large pepperoni pizza, cheese sticks and 2 fountain drinks. The pizza crust was crunchy on the bottom, soft on the inside with a lot of cheese a just the right amount of sauce. The cheese sticks were the same crust with a garlic cheese sauce. Picked up some carryout for lunch, a small aloha mr hands pizza and a fried chicken sandwich with the garlic parm fries. I am thoroughly satisfied with my meal and impressed with the quality. The pizza crust was great, even though Detroit style tends to be greasier than other types I did not feel like this crust was too greasy at all. The flavors of the aloha worked so well together, the pineapple was a highlight with the sweet and spicy flavors. The fried chicken sandwich was done very well, the breading did seem to have a tendency to slide off the chicken more so than I would have liked but the quality of meat was fantastic. The fries were a mix between fries / chips and were delicious as well, a nice change from more typical fries. We got a side of ranch as well, which was delicious. I am from a city with a large foodie scene and many good restaurants, and Millys would compete well with my local favorites. read more

Milly's is hands down THE BEST Detroit style pizza you can get in Michigan (Lower and Upper Peninsula both)!! All of their ingredients are fresh and some of them are even local ingredients. The crust is buttery and crispy with crisp cheese on the edges, my favorite. I love that they have such a fun variety of toppings and pizza choices and it leaves you wanting to try all of them! Someone near us ordered a salad that looked amazing. We ordered an Aloha Mr. Hand and I believe the other was just Cheese, Sausage and Bacon. I don't think you could order a pizza and it not be the best pizza you've ever eaten. I'd love so much to have a Milly's in the lower peninsula. If you come anywhere near Hancock, you MUST get a pizza from Milly's. My husband and I each had a fountain drink and ordered our daughter's Apple Juice (which is a very special treat for them). The Apple Juice is Martinelli's, which is bottled in adorable glass jars and made with 100% pure apple juice from USA apples only. There are not a ton of seats inside which gives it such a homey feel. There are a few seats outside that overlook the water that I thought was really cool. They eve have fresh herbs growing outside on their patio that they use on their pizzas, salads and so much more. My daughters enjoyed a game of pac man at the old school table arcade. Do yourself a favor and make it a point to get to Milly's. read more

My only regret is not taking a photo to share...but we were too hungry and its was too delicious to stop eating. We did takeout. Quality and portions were perfect. Densely rich flavors with fresh ingredients. We ordered a full -size Greek Salad (huge chunks of fresh veggies and delicious dressing) and a large pizza (super fresh ingredients, too!). My wife and I had just returned from Isle Royal and were looking for a nice dinner. We choose Millys based on reviews. We had the classic pizza. Excellent crust and perfectly baked. Topped with burrata cheese and micro greens. Everyone seems to have an opinion on what makes a good pizza. My personal preference is wood fired or New York style. It can be super busy, especially if you're trying to order for a family (it was a 3-hour wait at about 5pm the weeknight I went!) but it probably would have been worth it!
