Great place to get well socialized, friendly chickens. We've had chickens for many years and have purchased them from different places in Marin & Sonoma. I have to say, of all the chickens we've had the ones that we bought from Mill Valley chickens have been the friendliest, both up front & even now, 3 years later. We have 9 chickens, 5 friendlies from MV chickens & 4 less friendly, more skittish ones from elsewhere. There is a definite difference in chickens who've been socialized when young. They're friendlier & less skittish upfront, and stay friendlier as they get older. The lady who runs Mill Valley chickens is easy to work with, takes good care of her chickens, and makes sure that they're healthy when she sends them off with you. She has some supplies there that you can buy to assure a good start if needed. If you're a new person getting into chickens definitely get them here. Buyer beware: I'm a first time chicken owner. Not very well versed in chicken raising. I was sold 3 chickens, and I asked for 2 pullets and she didn't tell me she only had one available before I made the appointment and drive all the way down to buy them. Then I felt obligated to buy one once I was already there. Then she sold me a 5.5 week chick that didn't have all the feathers in was available and the pullet would allow her to lay under her and if not bring the baby in at night for at least 5 days. Then would be fine out in the day. Then she said I should get a third one in case one dies. And then she brought out a 4.5 week old out with only half its feathers. And then over charged me for everything. I'm part of a chicken group now and they all told me she lied to me and scammed me. read more

I have been buying chicks and pullets from Leslie for years. Last year I got three beautiful rare breed 4 month old pullets. I can't image where else I would have been able to buy vaccinated birds that have been experiencing her beautiful enclosed yard where they get plenty of fresh air and human contact. I see how all the chickens run for Leslie when she goes out in their large garden like enclosure. So you know they are treated well. They were friendly and easy going from the moment I got my pullets home. And this year, I got two healthy Speckled Sussex chicks. It is really a gift to have a place to experience the different personalities of the chickens or chicks and be able to purchase everything in one place. And yes, buying direct from hatcheries is an option. But a daunting one from my experience! A lot depends on how your local post office and distribution sites that handle these deliveries. We were looking into getting a chicken coop for a school in SF. Leslie was charging $270 to come look at the space. She told us she needed to do "soil tests" and look at the space to be sure it was suitable - - this would be in addition to building the coop. Unfortunately, we agreed. Leslie showed up and walked around some, no soil tests were done other than looking at the soil and saying it would be fine. We then laid out the area where the coop would be with her there. She took no notes - but did remind us that she was a licensed contractor a couple of times. We laid out where the coop would be and how it would be oriented and she left. I was expecting that she would be able to give us an estimate instead she asked us to draw out where we wanted the coop. I then sent her photos and drawings but her texts became increasingly rude when she didn't seem to understand or remember the layout and what we had agreed upon when she was at the site. Eventually the school went with another builder and she charged us $270.00 for nothing, no soil tests, no estimate. The builder we ended up going with came in and built the coop - no problems, no attitude. I would go anywhere else then MillValley Chickens to get a coop built. read more

I see a lot of people posting about this lady's rudeness if late. She is also rude if you're early. We were told to be there before 10 am. Read all of the reviews on Yelp and Google. There are a lot of common negative instances and unfortunately, this was also my experience. It's true she orders birds from major hatcheries and flips them, but she's up front about this. I don't hold that against her. Like others have said, she didn't have one of the breeds I ordered and paid for, and didn't give me any notice, so I switched it on the spot with another bird. I didn't mind since they cost the same, but buyer beware you may not end up with the breeds you ordered. Communication is poor. She emailed saying the birds were ready, then as I was halfway to Mill Valley from 2 hours away, she *emails* me (doesn't call even though she had my number) and says the chicks aren't ready. What changed in like, an hour? Zero details were provided. The next day she emailed and said they're ready, can you come right now, this morning? At this point, I just wanted my chicks. When I got there, no apology or explanation for not having one of my chicks, or for any of the communication mishaps. She then tries to upsell a bunch of other products on you. She did take the time to answer all my chicken questions, then she puts your chicks in a paper bag and hands them to you and you're on your way. Next time I'll order from one of the more reputable California chick hatcheries/sellers (Alchemist, Dare2Dream) or from the major hatcheries myself. read more

We are so grateful for Leslie and MV chickens! Over the past few years, five of our flock have come from MV Chickens. They have all been very healthy, friendly, and great with our kids. Leslie is very knowledgeable and is always very responsive and generous with her advice. We have come to her seeking advice from chick raising, avian behavior questions (pecking order establishment, etc), and how to secure our yard from predators and pests. She is a great resource for all of this information. She always has a great assortment of chicks and pullets available during the season. She also carries a wide variety of chicken treats, feed, and other goodies that are flock really enjoys. Leslie goes above and beyond to help her customers. She works very hard to ensure her personal flock, as well as the chicks that she sells are healthy and well socialized. We have always been so delighted with every chick from MV Chickens. I would highly recommend NOT purchasing any chickens from this woman. Not only does she have a very rude and condescending attitude, she doesn't even breed her own chickens. I always try to support local breeders, and I thought she was one of them. I had an appointment with her at 11am. I arrived at 11:20 (traffic in the bay area...can you imagine that?) and received an email that "she was expecing me at at 11:00 and wouldn't be waiting any longer and was leaving to go do errands". Her house number is NOT obvious. It's on a pole that leads down a side road. When I politely expressed to her that I was having a difficult time finding the house number, she berated me, saying that "nobody else has ever had a problem". That's just straight up poor customer service. After receiving the chicks (which she handed to me in a gift bag! That's a first!) I started asking her about her breeding stock. She then told me that she doesn't breed her own chickens. Instead, she purchases them from large hatcheries and resells them! That is SO deceitful. A Salmon Faverolle chick from Meyer Hatchery (which is where she said they're from) costs $5.83. She sells them for $29.99! This is so fraudulent and she tries hard to hide it. It doesn't mention this anywhere on her website. I highly recommend avoiding this at all costs. Nothing about this experience was pleasant. I am so disappointed I drove two hours to pick up my chicks and I hit traffic. Yes I was 25 min late however she had posted a window for pick up from 6-7 and I was there at 6:30. The owner is a nut. I also emailed ahead when we hit traffic to be polite. I emailed her at 5:30. She yelled at me and told me how inconsiderate I was and refused to help me after leaving me a note to return in 45-60 min. Go figure. I have bought chicks from her before and she seemed kind of off and the time before she had given some of my chicks to another client. I let it go because I wanted to support her business and she does have nice chicks. If you all want to do business with this one be sure to be five minutes early with bells on your toes and be prepared for a lot of drama. I am so disappointed. The chickens I got from Leslie are still happy and healthy. This new review is for Leslie's excellent service through her sister website Judy's Chickens. I needed chicken feed in a pinch (I usually drive to a feed store in Petaluma) but didn't have time today. I emailed Leslie, and within an hour, she emailed back that she had left 2 bags of feed by her door and she trusted that I would drop off money in her box. I agree 100% with Adam S. We got four chicks. One ended up being the wrong breed. One ended up being male. By the time we figured it out, they were already embedded with the family so no big deal. But the whole reason we went there was for hens of various breeds we could choose. People. Listen to the reviews. The owner is very rude and impatient. I love supporting small businesses but this business has to go. She values herself more than the customer. Firstly I purchased 4 chicks and a chicken starter kit for $100. Yes that's right, $100 for a chick starter kit. Unbelievable... anyways when I go to get handed the starter kit she just dumps this dirty garbage bag in front of me like it's trash and says here you go. It took me a second to realise that was my chick starter kit. It was almost as if it was left out in the rain, and had been used previously just to be sold again without even cleaning it. Then when I go to pick up my first set of chicks, she suspiciously hands me two identical chicks. I ask her if she's sure it's an olive egger and a welsummer but she gets impatient and says yes I know which is which. Both of them were brown with literally the same identical patterns so not rlly sure she was f ing with me. Anyways on top of that she called me, You look like a polish guy. I was confused because I had no idea what the hell she was talking about how it until she showed me a picture of a polish chicken which happened to look just like my hair system. Yeah, pretty sure she was making fun of me and mocking me right there. Anyways what made me most furious was that fact that I was busy and didn't schedule for pick up and when I come to the window of 6-7pm to pick up I email her and she says I'm not open. Don't come. I'm not gonna spend hours waiting to give you a $20 chick. I'm not kidding I'll send you some pictures of our messages. Anyways I went to Western Ranch and Pet Supply. Trust me go there instead. They sell them for literally $5.99 each, not like $20, or $40 like I spent on this crazy lady. Early in March we bought 6 tiny chickens from Leslie (Mill Valley Chickens) and took them home to Lake County.  We were first time chicken owners.  Leslie provided patient instructions, great advice (re the coop) and had all we needed on hand to get started (although pricey!). The six tiny chickens are now all laying eggs!! They are all very friendly and have interesting (and different) personalities.  They are also very beautiful. One of the most mercurial vendors I have ever worked with. We've bought chicks from Leslie in three different waves over the past 5-6 years, and had a mostly positive experience until recently. Her communication is not the best and the website is riddled with inconsistencies and redundancies; and her reviews consistently feature folks unhappy with her service/demeanor/erraticness, but this was just part of the quirk for us. She has been raising the prices on her chicks (which were really pricey to begin with) and recently added a "chick package" that forces customizers to spend another $100 on things one might not need, plus $15 on a so-called "concierge" fee that is not voluntary or included in the raised prices of the chicks. When I demurred on the forced-on-us chick package, saying that we had all the supplies we needed, she told us "Maybe you should just get your chicks from a feedstore" and abruptly canceled our order even though my husband and I were considering going ahead, ANYWAY, to support a small business. Enough is enough. I did two things: As I've been reading about the abusive practice of mailing live chicks in bulk, I went back to Leslie's website to see exactly how she procures her chicks. In the past, I thought it said that she gets fertilized eggs and hatches them, but I'm not sure that is what she's actually doing. When I inquired politely about this, she refused to answer. Then, I did a little research online. I'm delighted to see that there are more and more small business owners offering fertilized eggs in small numbers for you to incubate yourself. It's not that hard, you can share the incubator with fellow chicken enthusiasts, and avoid the hassle of over-priced livestock and goods, not to speak of being forced to buy things you don't need. You just need to plan ahead because eggs, especially in a pandemic year, can sell out. We'll start reserving eggs later this fall for next year, and in the meantime, continue to hatch eggs with the chickens we have now. It's too bad -- For a while, this was a good service to get city slickers into raising chickens but I don't think this business model is going to last in a new economy with better small-scale competitors who don't squeeze their customer base for everything they've got. We were loyal for a long time to Leslie and brought her several customers, but no longer. Time to move on. read more

What an amazing place. If you are interested in obtaining healthy laying chickens, this is the place to visit in the Bay Area. They don't ship, which is better for the chickens. They are knowledgeable and patient when answering questions. This is a home business so I was impressed to see what a functional backyard with free ranging chickens can look like. NIGHTMARE SERVICE. This lady was so cold and rude!! I had to email her to confirm my pick up time the night before since she never got back to me.. When I went to get my chicks I had a hard time finding her home and couldn't find a phone number to call anywhere in the correspondence (never provided one), thankfully a neighbor was walking by and pointed me in the right direction. This caused me to be 10 minutes late. When I knocked on the door, before I could even get a word out, she says "your late, I'll still give you the chicks though but you've mad me late" slams the door in my face and tells me to meet her at the next gate. She yells at me through the gate to hurry up as she's running late for an other appointment she booked 15 mins after my pick up time .. I also got some supplies from her and she threw them on the ground at me....so then I Drive 45 minutes home just to get an email from her that she gave me the wrong chicks and wants me to drive another 45 minutes there and 45 minutes back to exchange them!! Save yourself heartache and buy chicks from anyone else but Leslie Citroen / Mill Valley Chickens! The worst customer service along with unhealthy chicks. 2 of the 3 chicks I bought from her died within a couple days. All had terrible pasty butt and were lethargic and not eating/drinking well. She tried to blame this on me saying I didn't have the brooder set up correctly but that was not the case proven by the other chicks I've raised. Also, she didn't tell me that the breed I bought months ago was not available anymore until I actually got there . Reading through other reviews, looks like she does this breed switching quite often. She was supposed to give me a refund, but I have yet to see it and it's been months. Additionally, she messaging me 2 days early of the scheduled pick up date and had zero flexibility on picking up the chicks. In hindsight, I suspect she wanted me to pick up the chicks before they died. After, I talked about this bad experience in a chicken group on Facebook, and I was so surprised at how many people had chimed in with similar terrible experiences. read more

After hours and hours online researching coop and run sources and designs, I decided to buy a locally made good quality, affordable and stylish coop from Mill Valley Chickens. Leslie was easy to reach by text and set an appointment for a design consultation in my San Francisco back yard. She designed a perfect predator proof chicken run and specified an adorable coop - all made by her crew in beautiful redwood. She scheduled a couple of days to install and build, around the rainy weather. Furthermore, Leslie has been invaluable with guiding me on integrating two wonderful, rare hens into my flock. She has provided training on how to care for the chickens, I've purchased many supplies and feed from Leslie at very reasonable prices. She delivers to my house for a small fee or I pick it up from her. I can't say enough about how my experience setting up and raising my chickens has been enhanced by Leslie. Since then I have restarted with a new coop, sterilized yard and new flock from a local heritage breeder (papas poultry - Google it) and couldn't be happier. Yet somehow these chicks ended up at my house to be cared for because they're sick with something that they should have been vaccinated for, and I just had to put one down. I got my chickens back in February pre-pandemic. It was a long string of emails to work out between my work schedule and her availability. Customer service/support seems lacking. Slightly dry and not the most friendly demeanor. I did appreciate that at the time I didn't have any experience with chickens, so she just told me what I should get. As the months have passed and the chickens have grown, they dont seem to be the same breeds as was stated on the receipt. That being said, I still love my girls. I have added to my flock since from my local feed store for a fraction of the cost. In honesty I cant seem to tell the difference in quality or health of the chicks. In short, the concierge service is lacking and unless you are new to the chicken game........ you will probably will just go to the local feed store to pick up your chicks instead. read more

If you are looking for a rare chicken this is the place to go.They really know a lot about chickens and can give you some great advice (assuming they're in a friendly mood that day-I've had experiences where they were really nice and experiences where they were pretty rude). With that being said, they charge a CRAZY high amount (I've seen a 1 week old chick for $60-mind boggling to me) for a bird that typically costs a few dollars at most. I could see MAYBE charging that much if they hatched and vaccinated the chicks themselves but they don't...they're from a HATCHERY. They also just started tacking on an EXTRA $10 "concierge fee" when you prepay and reserve chicks. I understand putting down a deposit or prepaying for the item on paypal but charging extra for no reason makes no sense to me. I also bought an olive egger and black copper maran from them last year and the egg colors were very disappointing and not as dark as advertised. They also let people in and out of their backyard where they house all of the chickens which I think is a biosecurity risk since a lot of those people probably have their own flocks and could have stuff on their shoes. read more

My story begins like most of the other one star reviews. I pre-ordered chickens with the impression I was doing the right thing by buying chicks hatched on the Mill Valley Chicken farm, gettings chicks that were vaccinated for Merek's, and shopping locally. We pre-ordered 4 different breeds of chicken. She was very pushy to the pick up date being on a weekday and during business hours, so we took off work to do the pick up. When we got there, she had no record of us having an appointment to pick up, or a record of the chicks we preordered. We told her, and showed her the communication emails between we had sent back and forth with her and the invoices of us prepaying for the chicks. She then informed us that 2 of the 4 we had pre ordered had "not hatched". Later learned that "not hatched" and "not delivered" meant the same thing. She then talked us into 2 replacement breeds that were similiar. We accepted since we didnt have any other option and have been looking forward to taking home 4 baby chicks. As we were leaving, she then upsold us on turned out to be extremelt overpriced products, like meal worms, feed, woodshavings, and a childrens chick holder. We were new chicken owners and thought we were talking to an expert, not a skeezy salesperson. We took the chicks home and all seemed well. The 6 months later one of the chickens went lame, and was diagnosed with Merek's disease, the very disease we were told the chicks were vaccinated against. She was put down to prevent suffering. In COVID, we leanred vaccines are not 100% effective, so we chalked it up to unlucky. Then last night, we had a 2nd chicken go lame, was also diagnoased with Merek's and put down. One is unlucky, 2 is statistically improbable. I do not believe these chicks were vaccinated at all, and also exposed to the virus while in the care of Mill Valley. We did not own previous chickens, live on property that had chickens before us moving there, and our chickens never even the vicinity of another bird or chicken. In summary: This business is a fraud, advertised as locally raised (they are delviered from all over), says they are kept in clean cages (they were not), says they are not raised in a single brooder box (they are)has terrible customer service, iasks for you to prepay and then has you go out of your way to pick up but doenst let you know before you arrive that the chicks you prepaid for are not available, and then tries to upsell you chicken prodcuts at an extreme markup. Lesson learned: do your research so you arent duped into supporting a shady business. read more

I have known the owner, Leslie, for years. She helped me choose one of my favorite chickens: Dottie, who is a Houdan, as well as two gorgeous "step "sisters, both Polish, Hadley and Harriet. She is extremely knowledgeable about breeds. Mill Valley Chickens is a good source for your backyard henhouse needs. You can also find the exotic breeds of chickens not usually found at the feed supply stores elsewhere. In Marin County finding a supplier of chicken feed can be tough, that is, unless you live in a farm community. Leslie not only sells chickens, , she sells the feed and even the kits to build henhouses. I myself built an ordinary shelter, using plans drawn from the Internet. But to be honest, it is an eyesore. By comparison, Leslie's henhouses are little chateaux, to set in your own backyard fairyland. The chickens put themselves away at night. They fear predators and they want to share body warmth, when dusk settles. Check out this little bit of Americana right in Mill Valley. It's quite a treat to meet her and learn about poultry keeping. And to find some cute, warm fuzzy chicks to take home. read more

This is where I got my first little chicks from on a whim more than 3 years ago. I now have over 30 ! It's been such a wonderful hobby and my husband and I couldn't be happier. They are still a great resource and found myself at their doorstop again the other day when all feed stores were out of medicated chick feed ! Even picked up a small new feeder too. I was SO happy to buy from a private residence and not a feed store. Sure, I get the mail order hatchery catalogs all the time , but I want to support my local chicken lover who is trying to spread the hobby in my community! And its easier to be able to actually pick the chicks in person.Never had a problem with disease, or unhealthy chicks. And I love seeing their own birds at the County Fair and catching up on the newest coolest chicken . She has a great assortment of rare heritage breeds . My fave is still my Sicilian Butter Cup! My daughter and I visited Milly Valley Chickens to start our chicken family this weekend. Leslie was wonderful and so easy with to communicate with before we came. She knows her chickens! She even let my daughter feed treats to her older chickens and my daughter can not wait until our pullets can get all the same treats. We have three very happy healthy snugly pullets. We wanted chickens that were used to being around people and these definitely are. They are totally ok with being picked up and held and so far have not even pecked a single person - and that is with all 20 of the neighborhood kids coming over to hold them over the last few days. This woman flips day old hatchery chicks that are mailed to her and charges 15 dollars plus if you pick up the day old hatchery chick the day she gets it in the mail. She basically charges 15 dollars plus what she bought the chick for. Most of them she gets for 2 to 3 bucks a piece ordering online from hatcheries like Cackle and Meyers.. If you don't pick the chick up the day the post office delivers to her, she charges 10 bucks a day for board. Hatchery chicks are abused and very fragile by the time they are received in the mail. They should be put under a heat lamp at 100 degrees and not handled for a few days. Chicks are in shock from the trauma of being shipped and some don't make the journey They should be given heat, shelter, vitamins, water and just left alone to thrive. To get chicks mailed in a cardboard box from the post office that are chilled and dehydrated and to hastily flip them to whomever the mark is at the moment is downright cruel. They are subjected to handling and temperature extremes. There are people that come from a couple of hours away to buy from her that are completely clueless and don't understand when their chicks die from the stress of being handled and temperature extremes. Read between the lines people and research what this woman is doing. Just google hatchery chick cruelty to see what happens to these chicks before she gets them and flips them to you. Using her own children and the 4-h to promote animal abuse is just sickening. You can get the same chicks from mypetchicken.com and get them directly mailed to you, without Leslie the middleman. The chicks will have a much better survival rate and you will save money and travel time to Mill Valley. Every breed she is advertising can be ordered through them for less than what she is charging. She only sells inbred hatchery chicks that she orders. There is no breeder standard of perfection as she claims. Again do your research people. read more

I had a very lack-lustre experience that echos what a lot of others have said here. Leslie was cold, basically rude, and tried to push multiple chicks as well as feed items on me. A year into chicken rearing and understanding things better, it's clear that she is just receiving chicks and charging a mark-up as if they had been reared locally, when in fact this is not the case and you're buying whatever the chicks go through in the mail - even when potentially attempting to buy locally. Don't support this and wouldn't buy here again. I also bought other chicks from Alchemist Farm further up in Marin, and think they run a much more genuine operation and truly care about their animals. BioFuel Oasis in Berkeley (Sacramento & Ashby) is also a great option, plus you can buy sexed chicks so that you don't get roosters. read more
