    Cedar waxwing release
    Morgan W.

Three times now, whether because of fallen fledglings, an injured pigeon, or a cedar waxwing with a fracture, Wildcare has been the only local wildlife rehabilitation center to step up for birds in need of help. All other options on this side of the bridge said no, either due to capacity limitations or avian flu concerns. After weeks of expert care and healing, I drove to Marin and back to return the mended waxwing to his neighborhood. Thank you so much, Wildcare staff and volunteers, for helping all animals.

This afternoon I had some time to kill, so I decided to follow the creek that flows behind the business complex at 2nd and Lindaro. I was hoping to find a break in the fence so I could walk to the water's edge and enjoy some solitude while eating my lunch. As I followed the creek, I crossed Lindaro and continued my walk across the back side of a parking lot parallel to the creek. The creek is surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, date palms, saw grass and other native varietals. When finally I saw a break in the path. However this break was no ordinary break. The fence opened up onto a wooden foot bridge that spanned the creek and to my surprise, at the end of the bridge was the entrance to "wildcare." The entrance was intriguing and reminded me of the entrance to the African Safari ride at Disneyland. I walked up to the gate and learned that this is the home of "wildcare," a non-profit organization that rescues, treats and then releases wild beasts, birds and reptiles of all kinds. Passing through the gate, I was immediately inside a roomy courtyard with fenced enclosures housing everything from an opposum (sleeping), a Barn Owl, a Turkey Vulture named Vladimir, a Pelican named Winter, several Terns, a couple of squirrels and various other animals. A lady noticed my meanderings and introduced herself as a volunteer at the facility. She did not give me her name (and I'm sorry not to have asked for it) but she proceeded to explain the purpose of the organization. She gave me a mini-tour of their educational room replete with at least 100 stuffed varieties of mammals, birds and snakes and even a giant bear in the corner. Educating students and adults alike is a large part of "wildcare's" mission. She then took me to the hospital wing and showed me the white board whereupon under each month's headings are written the names of all species that were released. The center is open 365 days a year and daily feedings take place at 12:30 pm and 4:30 pm in the outer courtyard. The public is welcome. The staff of approximately 300 is 90% volunteer and while no admission is charged, donations are greatly appreciated. So on a lazy afternoon when you are looking for something to do, head for "wildcare." You'll be enriched and will walk away with a smile on your face, knowing that our feathered, furry and scaley friends can find refuge there in times of strife.

It's such a gift to live near this spot. Thought, kind, and deep knowledge of wild animal rescue means that you can bring any wildlife you find injured or in trouble here for them to take care of. I found an injured barn owl on the side of the road, stunned and only a foot away from the edge of the road. I wrapped him in my coat and drove home. They told me to put him in a box with towels and keep him in a dark, quiet place with no food or water. Also brought them a tiny duckling that was abandoned. Love the loving, capable hands at this place.

I love that the bay area offers so many animal and wildlife rescues! Wildcare is a wildlife hospital and nature education center. Albeit small, it has some great things going for it in regards to education. + Outside, you'll find varying birds, including pelicans, ducks, and even an owl. Inside, snakes and lizards can be viewed. + While we were visiting, an employee was discussing facts about snakes, and even allowed us to touch one. + The building itself is adorable! It really is a quaint, serene (but not necessarily quiet,) setting once inside the gate. + My son enjoyed playing doctor to the faux birds inside the play area.

It's perfect for kids (and Nanny) I'm a nanny taking care of 2 years old twins. They are now so excited about animals and this place is perfect for them! It's free and we get to see a pelican get fed and they have some other animals too, like hawks, owls, squirrel, and snakes (probably some more). This was our first time and we are definitely come back!

This animal refuge may be small, but it does the heart good to walk in and read the stories of rescue, rehabilitation and healing. It is free of charge but by the end of your visit, You may want to give a generous donation. The beautiful animals (hawks, pelican, owl, vulture, squirrels...) are well cared for and the volunteers who care for them are friendly. There is a lot of free parking, too.

We were warmly greeted by Beverly, who was not only friendly and helpful but also incredibly patient while trimming Julia's nails (no easy task since she's a wiggler!). She handled her with such care and gentleness. Dr. Nagra is truly a gem. From the moment he walked in, he was genuine, kind, and attentive. He took the time to really get to know Julia's condition, asked thoughtful questions, and gave her one of the most thorough exams she's ever had. Unlike other vets we've seen who sometimes rush through, he carefully checked her eyes, ears, and overall health, explaining everything clearly along the way. He answered all of our many questions with patience, empathy, and deep knowledge. Most importantly, he made us feel that Julia's well-being was his top priority. Taylor at the front desk was also wonderful--friendly and efficient in helping us check out smoothly. Overall, I would highly, highly recommend this practice. Even if you're traveling from out of town (like we were), it is absolutely worth it to know your furry loved one is in such good hands. We've already scheduled a follow-up and are happy to have found Julia's new primary vet. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! Thank you to Dr. Nagra and the entire team for your outstanding care!

She is so kind, thoughtful, compassionate, knowledgeable, skilled, and incredibly understanding. I know Milo has been receiving the best care possible ever since she became his oncologist. She performed multiple tests on him to make sure he doesn't have cancer anywhere else, she listened carefully to all of my concerns, and answered every one of our questions. She thoroughly explained Milo's diagnosis, what is happening in his body, and all of our treatment options. She also gave us clear instructions on what to do if we ever suspect the cancer has returned before we are able to schedule an appointment with her. All of her guidance gave me so much peace of mind. We are incredibly blessed to have her as Milo's doctor. There aren't enough words to describe how grateful we are for everything she and her team have done for us. Thank you so much Dr. Kelley Zimmerman, and thank you PESCM for taking such wonderful care of our babies! P. S. I absolutely adore all the pictures they took of our dogs ( Milo and Hiccup )! A couple of days later, my wife and I thought our dog caught two more ticks, but the ticks would not come off. We called an emergency veterinary hospital, but the veterinarian technician (vet tech) did not think tick bites were an emergency and advised that we go to a regular veterinary clinic. We quickly found West End Animal Center and obtained a quick appointment. The office staff was extremely friendly. Two large boxers rested behind the counter and enjoyed their extra-large cushions. In the exam room, Dr. Frye quickly showed up instead of the usual vet tech. He explained those two spots were not ticks and advised that we should use the prescription Nexgard instead of our regular K9 Advantix II for tick control. Dr. Frye also advised that our dog can use a blood test after the tick bites. We thought the blood test was an excellent idea and approved it. However, our Yorkie did not think a blood test was an excellent idea. The visit was the first time we saw a blood draw. As Dr. Frye approached with his syringe and inserted it in our Yorkie's leg, our dog quickly snapped and grabbed the syringe with his mouth. Dr. Frye removed his syringe from our dog's mouth and tried again. The second time, again, our dog quickly snapped and grabbed the syringe, but the syringe fell to the floor. Thereupon, Dr. Frye suddenly grabbed, pushed, and held our dog's head to the exam table; leaned toward a drawer for another syringe; and obtained the blood sample. We did not think much of Dr. Frye's abrupt action, as he needed a blood sample. After we left the office, we discussed the visit and particularly Dr. Frye's method in obtaining the blood sample. We concluded that our dog is small, and we believe that Dr. Frye grabbing, pushing, and holding our small dog's head to a table was overly forceful. Distressed, shortly after we got the negative blood test results at home, we did not follow up with a scheduled teeth cleaning, which we postponed and finally canceled. Though the office staff is extremely friendly, we believe that Dr. Frye's abruptness and forcefulness toward our Yorkie during a blood draw was unprofessional and violent. If you have a medium or large dog, you will likely have no problems in this vet clinic as your dog can easily defend itself. However, if you have a small dog, please be careful here.

So as long as you ask for the itemized bill so you know what you're getting into you shouldn't have to big of a problem. What a relief - hundreds saved there! And - even more - when I adopted my 80# dog from a large East Bay shelter 3 years ago (she was dropped off as a senior at a night deposit box, with broken off teeth, so we did not know her past) - I took her to UC Davis dental vet dept and was quoted $5-6k to address her situation. That was out of reach for me so I gave up hope on being able to help my dog in that way, but I'd do the best I could to give her the best life in other ways. When I asked for the test to be repeated correctly, or for a partial refund of $237 for the analysis I didn't receive, my request was ignored. I'd strongly recommend checking the details of any test results you receive here -- and comparing prices online before accepting any service or product. My second concern is far more serious. For over a year, my dog was limping. During multiple visits, the vets here observed her walking in and still only prescribed pain pills and anti-inflammatory medication -- never investigating further. No one identified the damaged cruciate ligament she had been walking on, in pain, for all that time. When I finally met the owner to explain the situation, she kept her back to me the entire time, never once looked at my dog, and sent us home with more pills. After years of unnecessary suffering and thousands of dollars wasted, I took my dog to UC Davis Veterinary. When I described her symptoms over the phone, they immediately suspected the cause, scheduled the right diagnostics, and confirmed the problem. My dog underwent a delicate surgery that, thankfully, went well -- despite the condition having been ignored for so long. Products here are also priced two to three times above what you'd find online. You are paying top dollar for a very high level of care that, in my experience, you are not receiving.

Some of the issues we experienced at Redwood ... The staff is awful, as in they all roll their eyes at her when she has her back to them, and when they are in the room with her, she's training them as they go. She hires people that are totally unskilled as vet techs, and she probably pays them poorly. They all look miserable. Her office is also dark and like a weird version of "Get Out", vet edition. Our pup had a UTI, and Genevieve had us worried that something was seriously wrong with our pup, and she pushed $800 of tests on us. Then, she didn't bother to tell us that she was taking off on vacation for over a week, so we sat in misery waiting for her to get back and tell us the results, because no one else in her office could do that. Basically, we helped fund her stupid vaca, because there was nothing wrong with our dog. She then told me that our pup has a thyroid issue (despite her thyroid level being normal on the tests!!) and prescribed meds for her- she totally misdiagnosed her and was going to put her on meds for no reason. I did not get the meds, as I knew she was totally erroneous in her diagnosis. Finally, when I emailed her about my concerns and shared that we felt frustrated by her lack of care....about her freaking us out needlessly...running a bunch of unneeded tests, and subjecting our poor dog to unnecessary pokes and jabs, and about her not letting us know that we wouldn't have the test results as she was taking off on vaca (leaving us hanging for over a week)....she merely responded " do what you gotta do". As in, she could not care less if we left her practice. I'm not mincing my words here...she is total trash, and completely negligent and unethical.
