Dr. Steve Egri is great vet. He is not into making money but he is more into what makes sense. While many vets like to shoot pets full of vaccines, again again, which they make their most money, Steve Egri care more if is it is needed, and if is beneficial and giving only what is needed avoiding giving too many. I know lot dogs who have got too many vaccines and they have got lot of inflammation and other health issues and who's skin and other issues get worst everytime they get new vaccines and their vet just keeps on giving more. I have never been to a vet like Steve. Its as if the animals tell him what they need. My dog, who is very shy & doesn't go near men, did not hesitate to be treated here. This animal is very intuitive & knows what is right for her and so does Dr. Egri. Thank God, there is someone in this area whose primary concern is the dogs' best interest. I love that he speaks to her needs & is not selling anything. When I got this little rescue (4th home) she was on different medications which I do not necessarily agree with & I was so glad to have him tell me to throw it all away. This doctor is probably the most unprofessional vet I've ever seen. The guy is missing half of his teeth, looks like he doesn't bathe ever. The only redeeming quality, which I assume is the reason why anyone would go to him is that he's cheap plus he gives your pets all the drugs you want. The problem is he runs office in the most unprofessional manner. I made an appointment today at 12 o'clock. Got there at 12 and the woman at the office advised me that the doctor is out for an emergency and wont' be back for another hour. Did they call to let me know before I come? Hell no. Then she proceeded to get on a personal phone call while I'm standing there, waiting and waiting to ask her a question. Finally, after ten minutes and she would not get off the phone, I motioned to her that I have to get going. She was very put out by this, you see, and was quite irritated that I even had the nerves to ask her to get off the phone for a minute. I told her that I would be back for an hour. When I came back, the guy practically ran out the door to tell me to get another vet because apparently, "it's the principal". I guess he didn't like the fact that a) I was annoyed to wait for someone to get off a personal phone call and b) how dare I be impatient when I show up for an appointment and was asked to come back? So the bottom line is, if you want a legitimate vet that behave like a professional, don't go to this guy despite all the reviews. If you need someone cheap and can write description cheaply, but don't mind the the weird personality or the missing teeth or that half of the time you make an appointment he's not there, he's your guy. read more

We adore Dr. Egri. He's nontraditional for sure (and will probably talk your ear off on a non-pet tangent if you let him), but he is more reasonable than most vets out there who will charge you a thick fee for the visit. We brought our new puppy over to him months ago and for under $100 we got around 6 visits wherein our pup got all the vaccinations and de-wormings needed. What a deal! His office is also home to one of the Bay Area's greatest treasures - a lady named Tia who does doggie dentals without anesthesia. (Yes, it can be done.) She also taught us how to use a Dremel to keep our dog's nails nice and short. And like Egri, her prices are jaw-droppingly reasonable. read more

Dr. Steven Egri has been my Vet since 1990. He has treated my All Dogs since then. I had a 10yr Lab/Shepherd, who had been Abused as a puppy, where her Back had been broken, and she healed, ran like a jack rabbit. With Dr.Egri's Care, she was Active, Chasing Tennis Balls, until 2-days before she passed at 16-1/2yrs. He treated my next dog, a Flat-coated Retriever (Long-haired Lab) from the age of 8weeks. She developed Cardio-myopathy at 8yrs. A San Leandro Specialist told me, she would die within 6mos. Her Rx's were filled by the Pharmacy, Because Dr. Egri want the medications to be Fresh and Cost Less. She took the same prescriptions my Father took for his heart. She lived to be 14yrs, with Dr. Egri's care, and She died of old age. The Last Week of her life, He visited her once a day, to keep her comfortable. My next Dog was another Rescue, a Lab/Aussie, a wandering dog of the Wharf, who developed Diabetes at 9yrs, This one lived another two years, with Insulin injections. I now have a Lab (11yrs) and a Saluki/Aussie(10yrs), who still act like Puppies. Dr. Egri's gentle care of Me and my loved pets, has been extraordinary. Dr. Egri is one of the Best Vets. Italian educated, Dr. Egri has alternative approaches in countless ways, and people come from real distances to his very quaint Sausalito clinic. Truly excellent and caring vet

Steve Egri was my cat's vet for the last 6 or 7 years of her life. I wish I had found him sooner! While he is unconventional, this is a plus for the care of a pet. He told me to feed her raw, because the commercial food is what makes them sick. He offered but never pushed invasive diagnostic testing, relying on his experience, smarts and intuition. My cat hated to go to the vet, but he made it easy for her every time. I am grateful for his compassionate care, even up to and including the end of her life. When I was unable to emotionally and physically get a handle on administering fluids, he told me to bring her in and he would do it--free. His big heart and kindness with all animals is such a plus. I have had companions all my life, dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, you name it. I've also lived all over the states, so you can imagine I have seen my share of vets. Dr. Egri is by far the best vet I have ever had the pleasure to work with in the care of my precious pets. He is not only extremely caring and exceptionally skilled, he is professional. I define professional as 'someone who is accomplished in the chosen field', Dr. Egri is this and very passionate about his work. We came to Dr. Egri with a bit of a challenge. We have a 130lb Akita, who is very good with us, but has given a number of vets a run for their money. Much struggle and application of muzzles later left me dreading vet visits. Until now. We explained our Akita's personality over the phone and they made arrangements to great us outside for the exam. Dr. Egri made our big puppy comfortable and happy. By the time we left I don't think he even realized he had been to the vet. During the visit, as it was our first time, Dr. Egri took the time to cover topics ranging from diet and exercise to flea control and grooming. His holistic and down to earth approach convinced me to make changes both in his diet and his flea control. Not only was my dog calm and happy, I was given a different perspective and educated on my dogs health. We were so pleased after our visit we went to the corner Whole Foods and purchased flowers and a card to express our thanks. We have had repeats visits and have experienced the same level or warmth and care for our difficult beast. I just experienced my first pet emergency with my 11 year old dog. I came home Saturday night to a crying dog that couldn't stand up, completely dehydrated and in pain. After getting the dog to relax and sleep thru the night I started to make calls to Vets on a Sunday morning. She couldnt get into a car to take her to a pet emergency room. Living in Sausalito, I called Dr. Egri's office and he answered. Not yet in his office he walked me thru what I need to check on my dog and asked me a series of questions to make an assessment. He than came to my home and treated her quickly and gently. After thinking I was going to have to put my dog down I am relieved and grateful to say Dr. Egri decreased her pain level and gave us a program to rehabilitate her. When our dog, Tashi, seriously injured his leg we consulted Dr. Egri. We were concerned that the leg was broken as Tashi did not put any weight on it. Dr. Egri examined him very gently, almost without our dog even noticing, and responded that he thought it was a soft tissue injury, not a fracture or severed ligament. To my relief and surprise he sent us home with instructions to keep the wound clean and return 2 days later for x-rays or MRI - if needed. We never had to. The deep cut healed without complications and we saved a lot of money ! So appreciated Dr. Egri's wise and non-invasive approach and recently, when we returned to have foxtail removed, our dog was happy to go back to the clinic. No fear or trauma from the previous visit. Again, Dr. Egri's calm and informal approach gave our dog the feeling he was visiting a friend and the whole procedure took place in the waiting room with Tashi resting on my lap. I am sorry that I had to give this vet 1 star. As far as I am concerned, he needs to be brought up before the board. A family friend's dog died a hideous, agonizing death over the past few days. Dr. Egri apparently told the family that she was not in pain. When they described her symptoms (she had inoperable cancer)- vomiting massive amounts of blood, bloody (black blood) diarrhea, inability to hold down water though horribly thirsty and dehydrated, anorexia, and labored breathing- he said that he would prefer that she went naturally, but could come over to do a home euthanasia if they felt it were necessary. He again, encouraged them to let her die naturally but said that he would bring some painkillers over, and would call back after he found them. He never called back and the dog died in the middle of the night. This dog suffered needlessly for several days. The family drank the kool aid that Dr. Egli was serving them and thought she was in no pain throughout the ordeal, despite what common sense would tell anyone. For anyone who entrusts their pets' care to this quack, run for the hills! read more
