Mary Press, Dr Feller and Dr McDermott, have been caring for my 16 year old Westie and Dachshund for the past 3 years. Throughout that time we have dealt with a cancer scare, senior dog concerns, allergies, minor surgery and ongoing care. Phil & Co on front desk are always very on it. The vet techs and vet surgeons are very knowledgeable kind, curteous, super organised and above all caring. I trust this practice's advice and appreciate being given alternatives for treatments and recommendadtions like supporting therapies! Everyone has been very available and caring. I would not recommend Dr Press. She seems to be on the edge, probably overworked or having problems. I called the day before my appointment to confirm it and was told there was no appointment for me on their books. I was given an appointment for the following week. I brought my dog in then and was told again that I didn't have an appointment. This was my first time there and very frustrating, The receptionist checked and came out and said they would squeeze me in. I should have said no and left. Instead my dog had a very rushed appointment with Dr Press. She was brusque, answering my questions as briefly as possible. Very unfriendly. I thought she might want to know that whomever was answering the phone was not making appointments correctly . But no, she spent time lecturing me on how I shouldn't be rude to her staff. I feel so grateful that I was referred to Mary Press. A little over two years ago, she discovered a heart murmur in my three year old small dog. She gave me options and suggested I follow up with a cardiologist just to make sure it wasn't anything big. I was taken back because my dog was at a visit for something unrelated. I did go to the cardiologist and it turned out Dr Press was not only correct, but my dog had a PDA- a hole in her little heart that needed to be fixed so she wouldn't go into cardiac arrest. Dr Press made calls and got referrals and after a failed attempt at surgery at her referral because they needed smaller specific tools, Dr Press got my dog an appointment at UCDavis. Well, two years later and my dog is fantastic. Every time we go to Tein Cities Vet it is a relief that Dr Press is there to be so caring and kind. She remembers details and has empathy. Since then we have been to 2 other veterinarians- who were not gentle or attentive. One was basically a money making business much more than truly caring for the animals. UPDATE: Worse yet. When I alerted Mary Press a couple/few years ago to my dog's teeth and whether he should have his teeth examined and/or have a dental, she said, "Oh don't worry about it, they'll just rot and fall out." OMG. So I did take my dog for a dental, saw the X-rays, the bone loss and horrible infection resulting in bone loss. Every single one of his teeth had to be extracted. Crying. Further, the vet said in six months my dog's jaw could have broken just due to the amount of bone loss from infections. I could go on but I'm horrified. They have taken excellent care of both of our kitties and have kept good records of their vaccination appointments. I searched for a good veterinarian when we moved to the area and they came highly recommended by a few friends. They have done a great job of communicating with me about upcoming vaccinations and I feel confident that our pets are in good hands. They're gentle with our furry friends and have been consistently professional as well. It's also great to see that they've been able to navigate the transition to COVID-19 protocols and have integrated text messaging as well, which is very convenient. As a working mom, I'm also very grateful that they offer Saturday appointments. Now, it is true that, up to this point, neither of our kitties have struggled with any health issues, so they haven't been put to the test, but it is comforting to have an existing relationship with a veterinarian for the day when they need more attention. read more

I would not recommend this vet, Mary Press or any of her associates. My dog has never had any vet anxiety EVER. During covid he got bit on his paw by another dog, we took him in for care. Since it was in the middle of the shelter in place we were not allowed to enter the room with our pet. I am fully aware getting stitches in your paw is not an easy or enjoyable procedure for any dog to go through. My dog was taken care of and everything seemed fine. Next visit to the vet he would not even get out of the car. We had to carry him into the office as he was yelping and crying. This was extremely traumatic for us as dog owners to see. Of course we do not know what went on in the treatment room but I DO NOT trust this vet with appropriate care. My young, large dog now has severe anxiety to any vet we take him to. Even with the covid protocols in place(which I understand and believe to be appropriate) I believe if this was a competent vet there would have been more care and my dog would not be traumatized. We found a lovely vet in Ross who is patient, loving and calm with our dog. The other reviews for this practice are terrifying. Please think twice before coming here. read more

Dr. Press has been caring for my dog, Axl, for about 4 years now. We have had consistently positive experiences with her. Whenever Axl has a urgent issue, she's able to make room for him in the schedule, even during Covid with the surge in demand for vet care. She's also proactive about noticing issues before I do. For example, she noticed a cancerous tumor on his chest during a tooth extraction and was able to remove it the same day. He's doing great now! The vet techs are great too--very caring and sweet with the animals. Prices are shockingly reasonable, especially compared to the SF SPCA (where we used to go). 10/10 would recommend. read more

After an upsetting experience with my longstanding vet (Mary Press), I sent this note attempting to express my sadness and frustration instead of firing her as my vet -- I prefer to mend relationships rather than burn bridges (you'll see from my review and others that she prefers the latter). Her response was to tell me I need to find a new vet and that she will not help my pets anymore (one of whom is currently sick with Giardia). She also did not care to ask how the kitten was doing. This is how Mary Press responds to honest client feedback. Here is the exact note: Hi, Just wanted to send a note to let you know how disappointed I am with how the situation was handled today with my kitten. I'm doing my best to care for both my own animals and a large number of rescues each month with limited resources. To be judged for my hesitation to take my kitten to Pet Emergency today when he's one of many fosters in my care, and to punish him by withdrawing the appointment you initially offered tomorrow morning was unfair and difficult to understand. It made a very hard situation much worse. I'm now spending my birthday sitting at Pet Emergency for 8+ hours in an attempt to save this kitten with my own money. We have a long history with your office, and I've been grateful for your help in the past with both my own animals and my foster animals. Dr. Press has been kind to me in the past, so I couldn't bring myself to leave a 1 star review, but in recent years, this practice has really changed. Animal care doesn't seem to be a priority anymore--they will not be able to get your pet in on a few days notice, suggesting instead that you go to the ER, which is prohibitively expensive. Furthermore, they have failed to diagnose basic problems with my animals that would have saved me hundreds of dollars instead of numerous tests and ER visits. I'm sorry to have to say this, but if you are looking for a vet, you should avoid Larkspur Landing Veterinary Hospital. read more

Dr Mary Press and her staff are amazing and true professionals. I am posting because I am shocked by the negative reviews. I have had several pets (all dogs) under her care during their lives and they all have lived very healthy lives with no excessive treatments pushed on me. My sweet lab, Jack, lived to about 15 yo and Dr Press provided me and my dog with such compassion when it was time for him to cross the rainbow bridge. All the doubts I had in my head she spoke to me about (without my bringing it up to her!) and made me feel SO much better about my decision (I mean, how do you REALLY know when it is time to let go of your fur baby??). Dr Press has always given me options when treatment was needed - she gives you the more expensive route and the more inexpensive route and discusses the pros and cons of both and lets you decide without pressure and never makes you feel bad for making whatever decision you end up with. She also charges less than any other place I have been and doesn't just throw in random tests to run up your bill. Everything we have ever had done was necessary, not just for the hell of it (which I have seen a lot of at other places in Marin). To the person who said her pet has anxiety going to the vet after having foot surgery - duh!! Who wouldn't?? I get anxious going to the doctor too. In fact, what dog wouldn't after getting shots and and a thermometer shoved up their keister? My dogs are always nervous going, but every dog I have had has gotten nervous/anxious going to the vet. Literally every single one. I know they get great care and trust their lives with Dr Press and her staff. It is NORMAL for a pet to get anxious (especially a shelter dog) especially after a traumatic surgery or stitches or whatnot is done to them. This is not poor medical care - it is a normal reaction. Super uncool to post something like that and blame the vet. Both of my dogs get nervous going in, but are always happy on the way out and get lots of love and treats in there. Avoid this vet. Pay attention to the other negative reviews if you care about your pet. Don't for a minute believe the pictures on their website of doctors playing with goats and tortoises like some kindly animal whisperer in a Disney movie. We were loyal customers for 4 years and spent thousands of dollars on them, until last week. They mixed up two prescription refills for important medications and put the wrong pills in the wrong bottles. We didn't catch their error until several days later, only after our dog started showing worrying symptoms. We realized we had been giving large overdoses of one med and underdosing the other, which required a late-night visit to a separate E.R. vet to deal with the symptoms. But when we contacted Larkspur Landing Vet to address this issue, they tried to casually brush it off as non-life threatening and showed no urgency or concern in getting back to us. We had to keep pressing the matter until they acknowledged their error but offered no way to rectify the situation. No apology and no offer to run tests on our dog (serious heart condition) to make sure everything was okay -- we were the ones who had to ask for a blood test, not them. Then they had the gall to turn it around on us -- telling us it was somehow *our* responsibility to catch the pill problem sooner. We strongly objected, saying that's why we had put our trust in them as professionals to not make these mistakes. Or, if mistakes do happen, at least be responsible and conscientious in handling them. We do understand mistakes happen. But how a business addresses them is very telling, and in our case the end result was Dr. Mary Press fired us as customers right there on the spot. She said "trust had been breached" and told us to go elsewhere for a new vet. This, after 4 years of being loyal customers to Dr. Press, spending thousands of dollars at her business, and putting our faith in them as professionals to deal with our dog's medical condition. These people actually dumped us over *their* mistake (a very serious one) -- or rather, dumped us for calling them out on their mistake and expecting them to do something about it. I can only guess they wanted the whole mess to just go away and we weren't playing along. So be warned. This vet is cold and uncaring. No remorse over serious negligence. Look at the other negative reviews here and you'll see the same pattern -- it's all fine and good as long as you're paying them and not complaining. But the minute there's a problem -- in this case, entirely their fault -- their true colors show and you'll be discarded in a hot minute. It doesn't matter all the money you've spent over the years, or the faith and trust you placed in them -- that all evaporated in an instant when we were shown the proverbial door. If nothing else, hopefully our experience helps others make up their mind about who they allow the privilege of caring for their pets. read more

This review is for Penny Elliot D.V.M. We had been very happy (even giving positive references) for LLVH until we saw Dr. Elliot. We took our dog in because she had diarrhea. As she is with us 24/7 and we control everything she eats (we make her food) we thought this might be a virus. We expected to be given a checkup and an anti-diarrhea medication. Dr. Elliot's course of action was to do x-rays ($260) and a blood panel ($85). When my husband questioned the appropriateness of the x-rays Dr. Elliot said "don't you want to know what's inside" while picking up our dog and leaving the room. We had a clear idea of what was inside. She returned, without our dog, saying the x-rays were all clear. She was proceeding with fluids ($25), an injection of Cerenia - a motion sickness medication ($25), and fecal/giardia test ($60). She prescribed flagyl suspension ($26) and FortiFlora probiotic ($37). The office visit was $50. The appropriate response was to do the blood panel, the fecal/giardia test, and maybe the flagyl suspension although the giardia test was negative. The cost for this should have been $221. The bill was $584 and our dog was subjected to radiation without justification. I called Dr. Mary Press who we believe to be in-charge and whom we have been very happy with in past visits. Dr. Press completely supported Dr. Elliot's decision to go straight to radiation. After asking other vets how they would have dealt with the problem presented NONE suggested radiology as a first course of action. read more

Larkspur Landing Veterinary Hospital is a low-service vet is for rich people. It charges exorbitant prices and advertises itself as a pet hospital when it mainly gives prescriptions and perfunctory exams to relatively healthy pets. If a dog becomes actually sick, it refers the owner to an actual pet hospital. Last week, I had a terrible experience with Dr. Mary Press and have since switched vets. My 16-year-old Pomeranian had been throwing up, and Dr. Press's suggested that he get "tests," (which she farmed out). One of those tests was a X-ray. The cost: $500. The next morning, Dr. Press calls me and says breathlessly, "Oh, your dog has a foreign body in his stomach an inch and a half wide! Are you missing anything? I've arranged for him to have an endoscopy at a pet hospital right away. Just go and hand him over!" Horrified, I rushed my dog to the actual pet hospital where the surgeon there did the endoscopy and found absolutely nothing in my dog's stomach. My frail old dog, who has breathing problems, was traumatized, and I paid this secondary hospital $3,300. For nothing. What Dr. Press didn't tell me is that the "foreign body" was, according to the radiologist, a suspected curved "soft tissue opacity." It was soft. It might have been gas or undigested food. When I looked at the X-ray after the fact, I saw nothing, only space. When I called Dr. Press and told her that nothing had been found in my dog's stomach, she said, "that's wonderful!" Not, "I'm sorry for putting you and your dog through this." Just "oh, good!" All these years, I was losing my shirt paying Larkspur Landing Pet Hospital and other places when my dog needed medical care. I'm three thousand dollars poorer, but I'm at last free of this money drain. read more

Dr Press and her team have been fantastic in their communication, openness, advice for my old kitty who ended up passing away at 17 and now with my 6 month old kitten who got an Upper Respiratory Infection. I was a bit of a nervous kitten mom as I've only had old cats get sick, never young ones. But Dr Press and her team were 100% spot on in terms of what he needed and what his healing/recovery would look like. We were searching for a new vet as knowledgeable and compassionate as our previous vet, who had moved. Mary Press came highly recommended and we were eager to meet her. We have two rescue Shih Tzus. Their care consists of a Western vet, an Eastern vet (acupuncture, herbs, etc.) and specialists at UC Davis Veterinary Hospital. We carry pet insurance for both dogs and cost of their care is not an issue. Mary saw each dog on separate occasions, but both examinations were cursory and perfunctory. She spent about 15 -20 minutes on one and a mere 5 minutes for the second. Each dog has her own separate health issues that should have warranted more time for Mary to investigate. With our previous vet, she spent almost an hour with each dog's first time examination. With Mary spending so little time with each dog, she could not have had a thorough understanding of each dog's health history. Mary's lack of knowledge about the newest biologic injection (Cytopoint) for allergies in dogs is disconcerting. One dog has been getting Cytopoint injections at UC Davis Vet Hospital for a year and a half. After hearing this, Mary told us that "Cytopoint was [just] liquid Apoquel". We said that was not what we were told from UC Davis' Dermatology Department. Mary abruptly and dismissively told us to "look it up". Well, we did. Not only did we call the manufacturer and speak with their chemists, we also spoke with the Dermatology professor at UC Davis, who both confirmed that Mary's understanding of the biologic was totally inaccurate. This caused us considerable alarm and we lost confidence in her competence. Moreover, during one dog's examination, she was taken to get some blood for her blood work. When our dog came back, she was highly distressed and screaming...a sound that we've never heard and no pet parent ever wants to hear. Mary just ignored her... not caring about our dog's screaming ...not asking anything about her welfare. We have never experienced this lack of empathy from a vet. Mary's demeanor was disturbing and disappointing. Our dogs are cherished family members and we would like their caregivers to treat them with kindness and compassion. We see that Mary has many great reviews and her customers think highly of her service. Sadly, we were not that fortunate. read more

Our yorkie Ginger past away at Larkspur Landing Vet Hospital unexpectedly on November 13, 2012. She was only 3 years and 9 months old. She was getting a du-claw removed and her teeth cleaned. She was our first dog and she meant everything to us, and our world is now a dimmer place without her. I've struggled with deciding to write this review, and after 3+ months time passing by, I still feel it's important to share our experience. Larkspur Landing did everything they could have and more after our beloved family member died. This review reflects that I wish they'd have taken as much care before it was too late. Our Ginger had a du-claw on one of her back legs that was barely hanging on by a little bit of skin. The last time she was at the groomer, it had gotten caught and bled quite badly. we had talked with Larkspur Landing about having it removed, and since this happened, we wanted to try and save her future pain, and not have it get caught again. Our Ginger had been put under before when she had gotten spayed, so we thought that she would be completely safe to go under again. I could not have been more wrong. When scheduling the appointment, I asked several times for a vet to call me back, since I had additional questions of if there was any danger in regards to anesthesia, even though she had been fine before. I also wanted a more in-depth answer as to why she needed to be put under for this procedure, when it seemed like a local anesthetic should have been fine to use for the du-claw (since it was barely hanging on), vs being put under for something so non-invasive. I made it clear that the priority was to remove the du-claw, since her teeth were healthy, and didn't need to be deep cleaned at that time. The only call back I received was from an assistant, telling me how much the procedures would cost. When I asked again if a local anesthetic could be used in regards to the du-claw, I was only told "No it could not, so we might as well do both since she had to be put under for either procedure." I should have cancelled then and there, got a second opinion, or insisted on speaking with the vet, but I thought our vet should know best and placed far too much trust in them. Our Ginger ended up having an allergic reaction to the same dosage and type of anesthesia as when she was spayed, she went into cardiac arrest, and her heart stopped. We were told was that the allergen was introduced to her body when she was spayed, and that this was a subsequent reaction. Larkspur Landing was unable to resuscitate her and she died. We thought we'd have her with us for 15+ years. We didn't even have her for four. After this happened, Mary Press told us this was extremely rare, had never happened to them, but was something that was known to rarely occur. THIS WAS EXACTLY WHAT I TRIED TO LEARN ABOUT AHEAD OF TIME TO AVOID!!! But apparently the vets were too busy to call me back, and thought it was too rare to be concerned over. No matter how rare it may have been, our vet should have made us aware of this risk, since if we knew there was any chance of her dying, we would not have elected to have these procedures done. A boiler-plate form saying you understand the dangers without any details is not explanation enough of what could easily go wrong. Clearly, my understanding was not sufficient, and I should have taken our dog out of there, and that's something I now live with everyday. Larkspur Landing was incredibly gracious after our loss. They took care of cremation costs and made a donation to UC Davis in memory of Ginger. We know they feel terrible over what happened, and of course did not expect it to occur. Their neglect beforehand in fully addressing my concerns was likely due to how routine and non-invasive the procedures should have been. I've recently became more upset when months later I learned that their is a local anesthetic used regularly in many animal procedures. This is commonly used when having an animal put under for surgery. I don't know if it's just not practiced to use a local on it's own, however, I feel we were misinformed, and better judgement should have been used to not risk her going under for something so non-invasive. Larkspur Landing is a good (busy) veterinary hospital that had something very unlucky happen to them, as well as to us. This review reflects that I feel there was more they should have informed us about ahead of time, or that I wish they had made a better judgement call that could have saved our Ginger's life. Later, I learned that many vets recklessly tend to shy away from talking about the worst that could happen with anesthesia, since it might scare people out of having surgery done. Bottom line, anything besides a life saving operation should be avoided. It's not worth risking the life of such an important loved one in your life. I have been going here for years. My dog is in general pretty healthy and all we really need are her shots and prescription for her incontinence. I have found the doctors to be nice, and the service in general to be decent for my needs. But man do these guys PRICE GOUGE for prescriptions. I have offered multiple times to buy my scrip through them if they came even close to what i can get it online for and they wont, so i have to buy online; they charge 3x more for scrips than I can get it for online. So here is where the story goes bad. Because of their pricing, i have to use online resources that require them to approve the scrip. Well, I ran out of Proin, my bad planning, and had them fill a small scrip for 20 pills. They charged me $25 for 20 pills while I waited for my online order to arrive. If my dog misses 1 of her three pills a day she pisses all over herself in her sleep/rest, and then she licks it off herself, and her bed. She also leaks in the car and drips pee everywhere. I also have to bathe her everyday which she HATES, and she evil eyes me. Well, yesterday I wondered why my online scrip had not arrived and I had to call Allivet.com to see what was up. Evidently L.L.V.H. refused my scrip because my dog needed a checkup but they didn't bother to call me, text, or email and let me know i needed to make a check-up appointment. So now am out of pills and my dog is pissing herself again. I am now forced to get a checkup and pay PRICE GOUGE prices for her meds from them. Well, that ain't happening. I am sick of this place. They know my dog has this problem and they dont care. If they dont care about my dog, they wont care about yours, they are just a greedy Vet. I immediately made an appointment with a new Vet that will hopefully care about my dog. I will post what they charge for Proin today when i get back. Larkspur vet clinic charges almost $120 for 180 pills, or $25 for 20 1800 pet meds is $65 incl shipping for 180 pills Allivet.com is $44+ shipping for 180 pills I like the docs here, i hope they wake up someday and realize what they are doing. Price gouging is wrong. One last comment, one of the desk people is horrible. Not sure why she is working with the public. She is mean, impatient, and really has a horrible attitude. UPDATE: Now I am really upset with L.L.V.H. My new vet charged me $36 for 60 of the same pills. These Larkspur Vet hospital people need to go out of business. I hope my post here contributes to that.
