Throughout that time we have dealt with a cancer scare, senior dog concerns, allergies, minor surgery and ongoing care. Phil & Co on front desk are always very on it. The vet techs and vet surgeons are very knowledgeable kind, curteous, super organised and above all caring. I trust this practice's advice and appreciate being given alternatives for treatments and recommendadtions like supporting therapies! Everyone has been very available and caring. I am glad I found this vet practice through recommendation and am very happy with the care and advice I have received. Mary and Curtis are both super down to earth and refreshingly direct, and those qualities are very important to us.

I called the day before my appointment to confirm it and was told there was no appointment for me on their books. I was given an appointment for the following week. I brought my dog in then and was told again that I didn't have an appointment. This was my first time there and very frustrating, The receptionist checked and came out and said they would squeeze me in. I should have said no and left. Instead my dog had a very rushed appointment with Dr Press. She was brusque, answering my questions as briefly as possible. Very unfriendly. I thought she might want to know that whomever was answering the phone was not making appointments correctly . But no, she spent time lecturing me on how I shouldn't be rude to her staff. I was not rude. I was shocked at the way she spoke to me and will never go back. Very unwelcoming to a new client.

Some of the issues we experienced at Redwood ... The staff is awful, as in they all roll their eyes at her when she has her back to them, and when they are in the room with her, she's training them as they go. She hires people that are totally unskilled as vet techs, and she probably pays them poorly. They all look miserable. Her office is also dark and like a weird version of "Get Out", vet edition. Our pup had a UTI, and Genevieve had us worried that something was seriously wrong with our pup, and she pushed $800 of tests on us. Then, she didn't bother to tell us that she was taking off on vacation for over a week, so we sat in misery waiting for her to get back and tell us the results, because no one else in her office could do that. Basically, we helped fund her stupid vaca, because there was nothing wrong with our dog. She then told me that our pup has a thyroid issue (despite her thyroid level being normal on the tests!!) and prescribed meds for her- she totally misdiagnosed her and was going to put her on meds for no reason. I did not get the meds, as I knew she was totally erroneous in her diagnosis. Finally, when I emailed her about my concerns and shared that we felt frustrated by her lack of care....about her freaking us out needlessly...running a bunch of unneeded tests, and subjecting our poor dog to unnecessary pokes and jabs, and about her not letting us know that we wouldn't have the test results as she was taking off on vaca (leaving us hanging for over a week)....she merely responded " do what you gotta do". As in, she could not care less if we left her practice. I'm not mincing my words here...she is total trash, and completely negligent and unethical. I think you really have to be a terrible person to run your business like this, and to treat pets and people this way. Absolutely avoid her and this place. **NOTE most of her 5 star reviews are fake profiles (with one review only). This is an indicator of false profiles to help boost her ratings. About our pup and her UTI, we found (via NextDoor) a wonderful vet practice in Fairfax, and we have been taking her there ever since. We learned that our sweet girl just needed the right antibiotic to clear up that UTI, that was all!

A couple of days later, my wife and I thought our dog caught two more ticks, but the ticks would not come off. We called an emergency veterinary hospital, but the veterinarian technician (vet tech) did not think tick bites were an emergency and advised that we go to a regular veterinary clinic. We quickly found West End Animal Center and obtained a quick appointment. The office staff was extremely friendly. Two large boxers rested behind the counter and enjoyed their extra-large cushions. In the exam room, Dr. Frye quickly showed up instead of the usual vet tech. He explained those two spots were not ticks and advised that we should use the prescription Nexgard instead of our regular K9 Advantix II for tick control. Dr. Frye also advised that our dog can use a blood test after the tick bites. We thought the blood test was an excellent idea and approved it. However, our Yorkie did not think a blood test was an excellent idea. The visit was the first time we saw a blood draw. As Dr. Frye approached with his syringe and inserted it in our Yorkie's leg, our dog quickly snapped and grabbed the syringe with his mouth. Dr. Frye removed his syringe from our dog's mouth and tried again. The second time, again, our dog quickly snapped and grabbed the syringe, but the syringe fell to the floor. Thereupon, Dr. Frye suddenly grabbed, pushed, and held our dog's head to the exam table; leaned toward a drawer for another syringe; and obtained the blood sample. We did not think much of Dr. Frye's abrupt action, as he needed a blood sample. After we left the office, we discussed the visit and particularly Dr. Frye's method in obtaining the blood sample. We concluded that our dog is small, and we believe that Dr. Frye grabbing, pushing, and holding our small dog's head to a table was overly forceful. Distressed, shortly after we got the negative blood test results at home, we did not follow up with a scheduled teeth cleaning, which we postponed and finally canceled. Though the office staff is extremely friendly, we believe that Dr. Frye's abruptness and forcefulness toward our Yorkie during a blood draw was unprofessional and violent. If you have a medium or large dog, you will likely have no problems in this vet clinic as your dog can easily defend itself. However, if you have a small dog, please be careful here.

The one qualm I would have to note is that an itemized bill is not provided before treatment is performed and it is assumed that you can pay for any amount of bill. I was informed that in order to receive an itemized bill you must ask ahead of time, which was not explained to me before the appointment. So as long as you ask for the itemized bill so you know what you're getting into you shouldn't have to big of a problem. I will say I was a little shocked at the cost but also haven't had to take my dog to the vet in a while as he is not that big of a trouble maker so likely could have been my lack of exposure to the clinic experience lately. Overall, very efficient and smooth experience!

Saving the best for last, most vets will find a way to get your very sick dog or cat worked into their schedule on a priority basis. Not VCA. Doesn't matter if you've been with them a day or 25 years, if you have a sick pet, take it someplace else, and that's actually the best advice you can get from them. Lastly, VCA won't cooperate with other vets. If you are working with UC Davis or another veterinary provider, VCA won't recognize that.

Although his usual veterinarian is Dr. Kristensen (who is absolutely wonderful), she was unavailable that day. Instead, Jallestino was seen by Dr. Ryen Morey, who treated him with genuine kindness and professionalism. What touched me the most was the follow-up: I received two personal calls from Dr. Wentzell, who took the time to answer every question I had with such clarity, patience, and compassion. It's rare to find veterinarians who go out of their way to support you emotionally as well as medically, and that meant the world to me. The front-desk team and pharmacy staff also deserve recognition. They are always warm and attentive. Today, Jallestino is 100% recovered -- healthy, stable, and purring like an angel again. If you're looking for a veterinary clinic where your fur baby will be treated with compassion, professionalism, and real attention to detail, I recommend Fairfax Veterinary Clinic.

Melissa kindly handles everything at the front desk and office - her Dad, Dr. Archinal has been a vet since 1982, and is calm, kind, and wise. He's seen so much - his very presence is reassuring. I felt like, no matter what my dog was dealing with, this Dr would have experience and can offer meaningful perspective and advice. What I came in for - was 2 small lumps on her that I was afraid would need biopsy and maybe more - he looked at them and said, I don't think they are a problem, you don't need to do anything, just keep an eye on. What a relief - hundreds saved there! And - even more - when I adopted my 80# dog from a large East Bay shelter 3 years ago (she was dropped off as a senior at a night deposit box, with broken off teeth, so we did not know her past) - I took her to UC Davis dental vet dept and was quoted $5-6k to address her situation. That was out of reach for me so I gave up hope on being able to help my dog in that way, but I'd do the best I could to give her the best life in other ways. It was so scary I didn't even want to look in her mouth from then on, and it was hopeless anyway. Dr A calmly apprised her situation, gave me solid simple, do-able, advice about how to care for her teeth and gums from now on - and I got a quote for less than 1/3 of that prior quote to do the dental work she needed! Now, I feel like I can take care of this, finally, 3 years after adopting her. God Bless this honest, down to earth, family clinic that treats their patient animals like family too!
