Dr. Giampaoli is fantastic; she genuinely cares. There's plenty of parking shared with Toscalito tires location. Amy's Drive-thru is nearby formerly known as Denny's, so I like coming here. They refer competent surgeons they work with, and all kinds of specialists in Marin County. Dr. Kallet is a good person as well. The front office is super busy, but they communicate effectively and tries to fit everybody in. My fur baby is 13 years old, and she's having all kinds of issues. Her UTI was cured and labs were done. She also comes here for nail trims aka pawdicure. I highly recommend getting pet insurance, such a lifesaver. I hate to pile on to my negative reviews but people need to be informed consumers: 1) if you have pet insurance, don't count on getting doctors' notes to submit with your claims; 2) prescriptions they sent to a compounding pharmacy are up to you to pick up and figure out how to administer, whereas other vets will retrieve the medications from the compounding pharmacy and cut pills into the proper dosage so that you don't have to cut a pill into eights or whatever is required; 3) if your animal requires regular testing or monitoring, VCA will charge you as if each test or exam is a whole big deal, whereas other vets will charge you a minimal charge. Saving the best for last, most vets will find a way to get your very sick dog or cat worked into their schedule on a priority basis. Not VCA. Doesn't matter if you've been with them a day or 25 years, if you have a sick pet, take it someplace else, and that's actually the best advice you can get from them. Lastly, VCA won't cooperate with other vets. If you are working with UC Davis or another veterinary provider, VCA won't recognize that. read more

Multiple dogs been seeing AJ Kallet for over 20 years, maybe longer. He is willing to go extra miles to help. Works with other vets outside VCA. Recently adopted a senior dog from Mexico via Muttville. Poor dog is very sick with fungal infection and parasite from South of the Border. Dr. Kallet was diligent about searching for the illnesses and finding ways to help. It was tough to diagnose. I think a lot of vets would not have gone to the extent he went to figure this out. He also tries to find ways to save us money when he can. VCA is a big company, and I doubt the staff have much control of the overall management, especially pricing. I tried going someplace "cheaper" and went back to VCA because of Dr. Kallet. He is a rare gem. Extremely smart and experienced. No B.S. He tells you the truth. I've also noticed that the front office staff is much more together. There was a period about a year ago when things were a bit hit and miss. Everyone now seems more calm, compassionate and patient. Appointment availability was surprisingly easy. Our appointment started on time and it didn't feel like we were sitting around waiting unnecessarily. Test results came in the next morning, I was notified quickly and also offered a vet tech appointment to bring my cat in the same day for a vet tech appointment to administer antibiotics via injection. I took my cat there to have his teeth checked and a wound on his ear looked at. The young vet who dealt with us immediately hit upon the ear wound and tried to convince me it was melanoma. They ran a bunch of tests and told me that he tested positive for Feline Immunovirus. This first visit, just to do the test and give him his shots and maybe glance at his teeth, cost over $1000. They gave me a second appointment for this week. I assumed at the second appointment they would deal with his dental issues. But no, they had us come back just so another veterinarian with more experience could look at the ear and give a second opinion. I didn't ask for a second opinion. I didn't get to see this other vet. The young vet just took him into the back for a while and came back and said the other vet said it looked like melanoma. I am skeptical of this diagnosis. The way to determine whether it was a melanoma is to test for it, which they hadn't done. I was convinced that it was just a scab, because the scab fell off between the first and second visits, and I brought the scab in to show them. They had no reaction to it. This second visit, which was traumatic and did nothing to help to my cat, cost over $300. She said the dental issues would require a different visit, and they would send me an estimate. She said it would be in the neighborhood of $3000. That was it for me. I'm retired on a fixed income and can't afford to be fleeced. They were also planning on doing a panel of tests regarding the "cancer" she was insisting he had. I wonder how many thousands they were planning to get out of me for that? The only reason I went to this clinic is that my next door neighbor takes her dog there and I had taken my dog to Madera once for a second opinion 18 or more years ago. It was a very good vet practice then. My next door neighbor has unlimited money, so that would not be a problem with them. I should not have allowed them to coast on their old reputation. Now that I've researched it, I learned that VCA bought out the practice in 2017. VCA is owned by Mars Candy Corporation! This is vulture capitalism at its worst. What makes me maddest is that my cat was traumatized by being put in a kennel and traveling in the car. To put him through this trauma a second time for no good reason was clearly financially motivated. Stretching out the services over many appointments gives more billing opportunities. I will not go back there! Now that I've read the reviews on Yelp, I see I'm lucky I didn't let them treat him. read more

What a wonderful warm well run Vets animal hospital & clinic. VCA Madera Pet Hospital. I brought my pure white cat with pink ears ready to hear he had a cancerous growth on his ear. After Dr Kim Robertson did a very thorough exam of "Mr Bunny" we left with written, verbal and demonstration of how to care for "Mr Bunny's " boo boo (bruise) ! Dr Robertson gave an extremely thorough exam, washed out both ears and gave me ear drops to do at home. She also educated me on a new injection to ease feline arthritis. Good to know. I feel bad not remembering all the assistances names. All were extremely helpful. It is a very busy place but all did their jobs to make it run so smoothly. Horrible experience and we are moving our dogs care to a new clinic after over 3 years. Besides having the worst customer service, nobody ever gets back to you and always long wait times-of course they have been saying for four years now they have a shortage of staff-cmon! We also had a horrific experience that was the final straw for us. Our dog had a routine dental cleaning procedure, when she came home she wasn't the same. Two days later, she was shaking and ended up passing a large amount of Gauze that was in her stomach. They of course apologized but I'm not surprised since their technician has the worst bedside manners. Their negligence could have resulted in something more serious. If there was 0 stars, I would choose that as 1 is too many. We have been coming to this vet since 1997 and our vet is AJ Kallet (and this review is not about him) who is terrific. We have had 4 dogs with this vet hospital but after today's experience we QUIT! We made an appointment 3 days ago for our sick dog. We got to the appointment as scheduled only to be told "we don't have enough techs" and "can you come back in 3-4 hours?", huh? NO. Our dog took medication specific for this appointment. Since this hospital became a VCA the previous care and attention has disappeared with all the new people, what seems like first year vets, expensive prices and a general feeling that they don't care about helping the animals. By the way, the vet today wasn't sorry about THEIR staffing mistake and we got more of the throw away "my bad" then a genuine "I/we are sorry". Don't use this pet hospital unless it is with AJ, everyone else seems to be clueless! Try West Marin Pet Hospital in Fairfax, nice, attentive people that care and made it work and got our sick dog in to be seen today!!!!! My dog has been misdiagnosed twice now at this VCA. Both times we were dismissed quickly with zero tests or care. They'd just send us on our way and tell us to clean his ears and feet. After visiting another vet, he was diagnosed with fungal/bacterial infection that has been mistreated for a long time due to lack of care at Madera VCA. It took an hour to get answers and meds at the other clinic. Not to mention how overpriced this vet considering complete lack of results. Do better. read more

The vet Kate understood my concerns on getting the care and worked with me and my frustrations. She makes impactful decisions based off the pet while understanding their boundaries. Her and the senior vet tech had phenomenal communication and teamwork. After each visit she called to recap, and discuss future needs. Update: We've been with VCA since our dog was a puppy, almost 3 years now and their team has always been great as was the level of care. I understand that COVID has made things very difficult for all businesses but it seems that VCA Madera has taken on more clients than it can support.  Each of the 3 times I've tried to get my dog in to see them in the past 9 months it's been a 2-3 week or more wait to get an appointment. Most of the issues couldn't wait 2-3 weeks to get sorted.  I then have to decide to go to use the emergency pet hospital for non-emergencies or try to call the next morning to get a same-day appointment. What is the point of having a primary vet if your animal can't get care there? Yesterday I spoke with Lynette several times trying to get my dog help for a suspected ear infection. She told me yesterday afternoon to call today between 9:00 am - 10:00 am or use the pet emergency hospital.  When I spoke with Lynette this morning between 9:00 am - 10:00 am she said that yesterday she told me to call between 8:00 am - 9:00 am and that I need to call earlier tomorrow to try to get my dog seen. Her lack of empathy for our situation and her inability to help in a meaningful way led us to find a new vet who can get us in no problem the same day.  A manager at VCA replied to my original review and wrote that they "...promise that a lack of availability is certainly not something we want," yet that is what VCA provides and that is why we've found a new vet.  Original: The level of care here is truly great if you can get an appointment. Getting an appointment however just keeps getting more and more difficult. In fairness to the team there, they do try their best to accommodate but at this point it feel like I either need to go to the pet emergency hospital to have my pet cared even for non-emergencies or find a new vet. read more

TOTALLY INCOMPETENT, 1 star is one too many. My 92 yr old mother called VCA Corte Madera and requested an empty syringe in order to liquify her kitty's ringworm pills and inject down his throat. An employee of VCA said yes, just come in and it will be at reception, she did not ask the cat's name or owner's. EASY RIGHT, After standing in the cold, explaining to 3 different employees that the EMPTY SYRINGE was waiting for me, a Vet came out with the cat's record and said I needed to bring in my 18 yr old cat for an exam before she would give me the promised syringe. I dread going to the vet almost as much as I dread going to my own doctor. Hospitals (whether they're for humans or animals) are just not my thing. But if you love your pooch and want to make sure it stays healthy & happy, then I highly recommend VCA Madera Pet Hospital. I've been taking my dog Cosmo here since I first adopted him 4 years ago. His doc (Dr. Larisa Tempero) couldn't be nicer. She always makes my dog feel comfortable, and she always provides me with a wealth of knowledge about vaccinations, pet maladies to be aware of, and other best pet practices. We recently came in to get his annual physical + rabies shot & heartworm test. The whole thing took about 30-minutes. And when it was all done, Cosmo came out to the waiting room with a happy smile and a wagging tail. As most pet owners know, vet visits ain't cheap. Today's visit ran me about $260. It's definitely a hefty chunk of change. But then again, it's a small price to pay for a healthy, happy dog. All in all, Cosmo and I give this VCA two paws up! This review is for Dr. Hora and her staff. I can't thank them enough. Dr.Hora is one of the most gentle, honest , thorough and caring vets I've ever encountered. Since the first time I met her, I could tell that she really cared about my pups well being. There's just something about her that is very calming, and I can't help but trust her opinions. She's also not a hard sale, she's never tried to upsale me, unlike most other places that I've been to. As a matter of fact, she'll discuss all your options with you, and all the pros and cons, and will come up with the best game plan that's most effective, efficient , and financially will make most sense for your case (even if she has to refer me to a specialist outside of their facility) There are also other doctors there that I'd trust as well, I just haven't seen them as frequently as Dr. Hora. My dog got kennel cough so we had to come here ASAP and see a different doctor. Our usual vet is Dr Casey, who is always awesome & my dog has been a patient here for years. But this visit on 6/3/19, I had to see a different vet, Dr Tami Jacobson. -Front desk Latina lady at counter was so RUDE. As soon as she knew Goro had kennel cough, she acted condescending and pushed us into a back room to wait for the vet. Yes Im obviously aware kennel cough is contagious, but no need to act rude right when we check in! -This was the first time I have ever met Dr Tami Jacobson and her examining my dog. She also kept acting like she's examined him before. -She checked his chest and asked if I knew he had a heart murmur bc he always had one?!? HUH?! I told her we have NEVER met her before. -She kept insisting and later says "oh wait, never mind. I remember your name bc I approved a prescription for your dog." -She starts telling me his heart murmur could be caused by him eating grain free food, and suggests I order pricey dog food from them. She also suggested a $500+ chest X-ray. -She told me my dog has a stage 5 heart murmur!! I told her maybe it could be an irregular heart beat bc of the kennel cough causing him to breath differently. She said no. -I was prescribed kennel cough meds, but would not write it on his invoice unless we did a swab test, but that it was most likely kennel cough. Prescribed me $57 cough suppressant without letting me know along with the kennel cough meds. Pricey. October 2019, I took my dog in for a check up at his NEW vet office. My dog's new vet said she heard NO MURMUR AT ALL!!! Soooooo happy I switched my dog to the same vet office as my cats. VCA SUCKS & are only after your $$$$$$. Stay away! This is another "shout out" for Dr. Kim Robertson. VCA is so lucky to have her. And so are we. She truly loves the pets that come to her for care. She is always there for us when our cats have needs. Her advice and treatments have always been excellent. We just lost our boy cat of 15 plus years after many years of Kim guiding us on the treatments he needed. When the end came for him, she was there helping us know what to do and even suggesting another vet who would come to our home to make the experience more peaceful. The only reason this place is getting 2 stars is because I do like the doctors. Although they do seem "rushed" to get to their next appointment. My dog recently went in for a wellness check and his updates for vaccines, but I also needed to get information for documents needed for him to travel internationally. I called a week prior to his wellness check to get the information. No one ever called me back, and every time I called the wait was incredibly long to get through to someone so I figured I could ask while I was in the office. While in the office for my wellness check, I was told there was ONE person who schedules health certificates, she was literally sitting at her desk, but the receptionist said I needed to speak with the doctor first. So I had my wellness check asked the doctor and she said I needed to speak with the administrator! I then went to speak with the administrator, who now was out to lunch, and i asked for her to call me back. She never called back so I had to hound her (yes spent almost 30 minutes on hold trying to get to her) and in the end she told me I had to call the endorsement office to get all the information.... Seriously - I waited a week and half to get a telephone number!!!! And then after I got the information I had to hound this same administrator again to get the appointment for a "health check" - mind you I was in the office getting a "wellness check" - both could have happened at the same time time! I didn't really appreciate the run around! They then proceeded to tell me that when they called me my phone line was "busy" when they tried to call me back - um we live in the 21st century that doesn't happen anymore... not to mention the other receptionists I spoke to told apologized saying oh I'm sorry the administrator didn't call you back, she's really busy!!! The administration is a circus. It is hectic, chaotic, and inefficient. In my year of patronizing this place I've seen a lot of turn over in reception. And, after calling around I was pleasantly surprised by the other vet offices I called because they were SUPER helpful (Novato pet hospital, south Novato pet hospital, Pleasanton pet hospital). Not to mention the health certificates I could get from them were over half the price I was given from VCA. We are definitely switching vets. I was warned about VCA taking over this place... I have been taking my dog, Georgia to the VCA in Corte Madera for 5 years now and every single experience has been exceptional. Today, they went above and beyond so much so that I had to write a review. It was clear that my poor baby had some sort of urinary track infection; in that she had blood in her urine and a sense or urgency to go potty all of a sudden. I called to make an appointment and was told that they didn't have availability but they'd check with the doctor to see if the doctor would make an exception and squeeze her in. I was so thankful when they DID make an exception!! I am so grateful for Dr. Giampali and the staff for making sure my dog got the immediate attention she needed. Dr. Hora and team went absolutely above and beyond helping me with a health issue for my new dog that I recently adopted. Diane was kind and patient with me on the phone while scheduling; she helped me get an appointment on very short notice for a health concern that I noticed on my newly adopted dog, and was generous with her time and explained what to expect for both the pre-visit-intake-form, and appointment check-in process, so everything was seamless when my pup and I arrived! The staff was extremely vigilant and proactive about helping everyone (both people and pets!) stay safe during the visit, which I appreciated. Dr. Hora was extremely kind and knowledgeable, and took the time to send information a great article on the medication I took home for my dog when I called back with questions about it. We have been clients of the vet at Larkspur Landing for some time. Back in the fall, our Boston started have what seemed like choking episodes. The doctor at Larkspur Landing did not seem to take much interest and sent us home a number of times stating that the episodes were not related. We decided to get a second opinion at VCA Madera and thank god we found Doctor Larisa Tempero. It's been a long journey, and we had to put our poor sweet 5 year old boy down this week, but Doctor Tempero did everything in her ability to correctly diagnose our pup and give him the best life he could over the past 6 months. She was available nights and weekends on text, email and calls, and meticulously charted out all of the directions his illness could take. We regularly updated her and she was able to figure out that our little guy had an early life brain tumor, something very rare for a dog of this age and something very hard to diagnose. I've never had a doctor (for humans or pets) work as hard to find an answer as Doctor Tempero. When we told her of our dogs passing, her next questions were around the health and wellness of our family and even our other dog. There is a special place in heaven for people like Doctor Tempero. I have been going to Madera Pet Hospital for almost 13 years. I did a lot of research into Bay area vets when I first moved out to the west coast, and Madera Pate Hospital came out on top after talking to dozens of dog owners. Most of the the staff (doctors and vet technicians) are friendly and knowledgeable, and the facilities are clean and bright. It can be busy, so you should expect to wait -- on hold, in the waiting area and in the exam room, and the waits can be very long. I would agree with several other reviewers about the price. It's very, very expensive!! It's rare to leave without a $300-$400 bill for various tests that may or may not be needed. It would be great if they provided conservative and aggressive testing options and disclosed all of the costs of the tests up front BEFORE they are performed so that you don't suffer sticker shock when you check out. My advice would be to ask upfront 1. if the test is needed, and why; and 2. How much it will cost. I definitely get the sense Madera Pet Hospital is more concerned with the bottom line and increasing revenue now that they are part of VCA. I've noticed they are pushing tests more than ever before. I was recently pressured into having my 13 year old dogs tested for heart worm and starting Heartguard back up despite my resistance due to their age and a health issue. The vet simply did not want to listen to my concerns. The doctors are all very experienced, knowledgeable and professional, and if there is a medical problem or condition beyond their scope of expertise, they will gladly refer you to U.C. Davis or other specialists. I do believe Madera Pet Hospital is the best is Marin. I simply wish that they had not become part of VCA . The place is ridiculously expensive so beware! Ask a lot of questions, and get estimates for everything up front. read more

Dr's are generally good, but seem to make unnecessary appointments and evaluations. The office staff is terribly slow and inefficient - it's always a long drawn out process to make an appointment or check out (when that should be the fastest part). The Dr's try to upsell you on their care package, and prescriptions or fecal tests or whatever - then upsell other items or prescriptions for eyedrops or eardrops, etc. I went there for nearly 5 years. I find their Rx costs to be much more expensive so buy through Chewy.com. They can't seem to get your dogs on the same routine for exams/shots/meds despite my trying. Wish they renewed basic flea/tick Rx without "wellness visits" when they've seen my dog in the past couple months for other issues. On a positive note they are open weekends. I also can't seem to ever get an appointment with my preferred vet. Overall okay but I've moved on to another vet who does everything online and is super easy to work with and reasonable. read more

I have taken 3 cats and 2 dogs to them because they are convenient and easy to get an appointment. I'm always shocked at the bill, and all the extra pricey tests, procedures they want to run after a routine annual exam. Today I called to ask the cost for spay and neuter for 2 kittens. They quoted $1000-$1200! My jaw hit the floor! I asked her to confirm what she said, and I heard her correctly, $1000-1200! Outrageous! So I called another local vet, and their cost is $180 and $350. I will not be going back to the VCA. They over charge for everything! Save your money and go somewhere else! Also note that all 5 animals I've had seen here by various doctors at different times. Somehow they all have a heart murmur that should get an expensive chest x-ray and EKG. Old dog, maybe, but puppy and kittens, no way. But when if comes to the staffs at the desk and they are the face of the business on the phone I think a prisoner have a better check out then your dog. No one person can pull up your information and see what is going on an your dog account and when is the next appointment. They do not smile and they are just not nice. I have been going to VCA Madera pet hospital for over 30 years. My last dog was the love of my life and had several life threatening conditions including lymphoma for which she received chemotherapy at Madera. Dr Kallet has been my vet all these years though I have seen many vets there on occasion when I needed to get in and Dr Kallet was unavailable..all great! Throughout my dogs illnesses it was Dr Kallet who kept me sane, always taking time to answer my questions and give her the best treatment. She was a star at Madera living to be almost 17 which would have been extraordinary for a healthy dog of her breed and simply miraculous given her conditions. went for a tech only bordatella shot today after I just came last month. we are seen at a VCA in so cal as well.. I find both locations expensive and the people customer service to be average . I paid $56 so I could wait and be told to wear a mask? why don't I go to petco for $12 no mask? I paid $150 ish w the vet last month.. very old office ..clearly corp VCA is taking all the fees ... if you are going to continue masks then just take dogs from the car.. i haven't masked in a year.. thank goodness I don't need to come back for a while. maybe they will realize Covid is over then? read more

I have been with Madera for nearly 30 years - 4 wonderful dogs. There are not enough stars to put in a rating for the type of medical care, personal interaction overall professionalism. I have been permanently attached to the care provided by A.J. Kallett who I have 100% faith and trust in when dealing with all of my dogs - and recently by Laurie Tossano who cared for my girlfriends dog recently on an emergency situation when A.J. was out of the office. Having read several of the negative reviews, I must say I am not certain of the writers' ability to make valid judgments or their mindset at the time of writing. Having founded Orphans of the Storm in conjunction with the Marin Humane Society, rescuing nearly 3,000 dogs from Katrina in 2005, and working with A.J. and his staff during that time, I believe that I am in an exceptionally strong position to rate and RECOMMEND this Veterinarian practice to everyone who has a pet - THEY ARE SIMPLY THE BEST. read more

We made the hard choice to put our nearly 16 year old yellow lab down today. We've been patients at VCA Madera for about 5 years. My dog was diagnosed with advanced kidney disease this year. She's old but I was feeding her a special renal diet and she was holding on. Until she wasn't. It became very clear this week that something was really wrong. I made an appointment and got in to see Dr. Skolnick at noon today. I knew it was the end. It was very emotional. Dr.Skolnick walked me through the decision and was so compassionate about it. She absolutely reassured me about the decision to say goodbye. She made it clear that I wasn't a bad person for feeling some relief about this choice because of how hard it has been to care for such a sick dog. Tonight I'm thinking back over the dog's life and all the things she experienced with my family. She was an awesome dog. And VCA Madera has allowed me to feel joy about how great her life was instead of guilt that it was time for her to go. read more

I brought my dog in to VCA Madera because his vet was out of town. I explained the symptoms and that my biggest worry was this intense belly breathing. The vet said she didn't hear any fluid in his lungs and he probably was getting over kennel cough. They gave me a prescription and sent me home. No one followed up to call or see how he was doing. My actual vet did follow-up and 3 days later, my dog was being rushed to the hospital because his lungs were filled with fluid. His lungs didn't magically fill up with 1L with fluid in 3 days. The vet COMPLETELY missed this symptom, something that a vet tech can diagnose. If I had just gone along with what they had said and didn't continue to worry and talk with my actual vet, my dog would have died that weekend. Don't bring your pet here. They don't take time to care if they live or die. read more

These people are always so sweet and caring when it comes to my dog Capri. I've had nothing but good experiences with them and even though there is actually a different VCA closer to my house. I don't think I'll ever change because of the great way they treat my dog and I. Love them! read more
