I felt like they listened and cared. -- This is based on our experience trying to adopt a dog from AHAN pre-covid. I saw a dog on petfinder and contacted them and then AHAN reached out to let us know that particular dog was in the process of being adopted but to look at their website for others. So we did and then since I have already filled out an application, I just emailed the person back to let them know I was interested in another dog. Turns out these dogs were in Taiwan which is fine. But the second dog that we were interested in also fell through because then we were told that dog had Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia and their adoption is now pending. They said they will reach out to recommend others but never did. Why would you list a dog for adoption before you can clear them medically? Seems like a waste of time and heart break for people that wanted to adopt.

The house visit might not be something they do during Covid. I have been looking for a rescue for a year using adopt a pet which is a platform where people can rehome their pets and rescues can post theirs. I fell instantly in love with Athena. The description of her was really, really thorough and there were 6 videos of her in different situations (with children, other dogs, on leash walking near a dog, playing with dogs, etc.) it really gave me a great picture of her personality and behavior. The process was easy once I went through the interviews. The first interview was with Jessamy and she asked me a lot of questions to ensure that I was able to care for Athena and that my place was adequate for her. I then had another FaceTime to meet Athena (who was in Taiwan) and that only reinforced that I wanted her. I sent over a donation for Athena and her crate. [Side note, I do not think that the suggested donation covers more than 40% of the total care they invest in their dogs. Athena has all her shots, a minor surgery, scans/radios and so much paperwork from her vet in Taiwan because they really take care of their health. The food she was given was good food (Royal Canin) and she had really good joint supplements. She also had toys and a blanket. The flight was covered by AHAN and so was half the crate. Also she received basic training and was potty trained, could sit/lay down and walk on a leash. If you can donate more or on a regular basis, please do. If you can't, adopting those wonderful pets is already amazing so thank you!] Within a week, Jessamy and her team took care of everything. Flights, instructions on how to pick up the dogs, crate sizes (to place in car after pick up). When I met Athena at the airport it was the best day of my life. I was there with 4 other families, all eagerly awaiting their furry baby. Jessamy stayed in San Francisco and visited all the families to make sure the dogs were acclimated. She provided really great training advice and made sure that I was comfortable with Athena. I did additional training with Athena and a trainer here which I highly recommend if you're getting ANY dog ANYWHERE. Also I'd like to share that the size of your home doesn't matter - it's the number of walks and quality of those that does. I lived in a studio (550 square feet) for the first 8 months in San Francisco. Athena is a 50lbs dog and was super happy. We do a walk in the morning (30mn), long afternoon one (45-60mn) and evening one (20mn). I cannot thank AHAN, Jessamy and their incredible team of volunteers for the work that they do. Amanda is very responsive, and is also "tuned in" to the dogs, their dispositions, what would make a good home, etc. I read a less than positive review about the application process, and it is obvious that whoever wrote it had limited experience with the process of adopting a rescue. It can be time consuming, competitive, and requires diligence. When it comes to Might Mutts, they are reviewing every application, setting up appointments, and dedicating a TON of time to making sure these precious dogs get to the right homes. It is very honorable-and I would recommend them and their organization to anyone.

Then we stumbled upon Wonder Cat Rescue. These folks act like they actually love animals and want to help them find homes. We e-mailed them; heard back immediately; met the pair we had inquired about and received them the next day. Stephanie and her volunteer foster parents are knowledgeable and caring, the animals are immunized, micro-chipped and socialized. Our new cats had had a rough entry to the world, but were saved from the 'kill shelter' by Wonder Cat, which fostered them, bottle fed them and loved them. We're thrilled. PS: Their Website was updated TWICE on the afternoon that we met the cats. Once to mark their profile "pending" and second to remove them, once we finalized the adoption. With Wondercat, the cats, which you see online are cats who actually are available.

Volunteers raise the cats in loving homes so that they never have to spend a single night in a cage. The extra love and attention they get really shows. Mokey and Hanzo are very gentle and love people. They sit in the window all day talking to everybody that walks by and rubbing against the glass. They've become local celebrities in our neighborhood and everyone loves them. It's great that there are organizations like Wonder Cat out there that work tirelessly to give unwanted cats a chance for a better life.

With only three cats available for adoption at the SFSPCA, they recommended several non-profit sites including one I'd found on search: Give Me Shelter. There, I spotted three or four cats I might want to know more about, all sweet. A later visit that same day, however, revealed a gorgeous boy with an adorable name that made me smile, Captain Jack Sparrow. It's like that line out of "When Harry Met Sally", "It's like a good melon: When you know, you know." I hastily filled out a very thorough application and hoped to hear back soon. Maria set up a Zoom call the following day with her and the cat foster mom who'd been tending Capt. Jack. We were approved! While I make it seem simplistic, the vetting process is *very* thorough, done as a team and for the cats' sake, I'm glad it is. Give Me Shelter wants to be sure you're 100% committed to keeping and caring for the cat for its lifetime (could be 20+ years, yo!) and will not declaw him, a truly barbaric practice that involves cutting off its digits past the first knuckle. This nonprofit has the cats' interests at heart and it's clear they're committed to supporting *you* as well to insure the adoption works. They expect a reciprocal agreement you're equally committed. I was happy to sign. That Captain Jack Sparrow would be my fifth rescue over many years gave me gravitas. And that I answered their questionnaire with complete honesty gave them peace of mind. They really care about these beautiful creatures. I picked up Captain Jack Sparrow's papers (all his papers meticulously organized with the cat chipped, fully vaxxed and neutered and given a bonus gift of a beautiful felted cubby) then I met kitty at the foster mom's place and took him home. Give Me Shelter is a wonderful non-profit, completely dedicated to abandoned cats who would otherwise be euthanized. If you're looking for a cat companion, start here. I circled around the several streets until I found a spot that a car just left about two blocks away. The staff are all very welcoming and check-in on the people. There were 3 areas which were separated with the gates. I visited two of them- the main one and one of the smaller ones. I saw many very sweet and cute senior doggies. I spotted a black and white dog in the other area so I went over there. I was so happy that there was a black and white Shih Tzu there. She looks like a doppleganger of my beloved Mokibaby. It was such a lovely time for me to just pet the doggies and spend some time with them. One of them kept whining, and I went over to her to pet her. She calmed down and even wanted belly rubs. So sweet! I definitely want to come back again and again to visit the senior doggies! :) I can't have another dog right now, but when I do, I'm going to adopt one one day!

Their adoption fees are also varied. Rhodesian Ridgeback is $500, and they have others for $250. Give me a break. They list their dogs on petfinder but most of them state: Note: The picture looks like xxx, but is not him. We'll post his actual pictures when as soon as we have an opportunity to take them. I sent them an email about why the Yorkie was so expensive and they said the dog was their dog of the month. WTF is a dog of the month? They offered me another dog that would be "cheaper."

We were well prepared but for first timers, this is just a bit of advice as animals are not disposable they are like kids and a huge responsibility. Our dog (we named her Korra) ended up being older than we were told, but that happens with rescues and was not a big deal. She did have some skin issues that have since cleared up after a round of antibiotics and some medicated baths. She needed her teeth cleaned badly which I would never expect a rescue to afford but we knew that when we met her and checked her teeth. She has since had them cleaned and is in tip top shape and is a total lover and loves to show us her new smile. Adoption process was smooth and painless. We love our new baby!
