What a scam! They have a yorkie listed for $900!! This does not sound like a rescue group or non-profit. I have never heard of such ridiculous fees. Rescues should never be that expensive! Their adoption fees are also varied. Rhodesian Ridgeback is $500, and they have others for $250. Give me a break. They list their dogs on petfinder but most of them state: Note: The picture looks like xxx, but is not him. We'll post his actual pictures when as soon as we have an opportunity to take them. A few weeks ago, my husband and I adopted our Schnorkie (Schnauzer/Yorkie) and she is amazing. Very sweet, trained in the basics and loves to ride in the car. She is a true blessing. I have only heard her bark once while playing with our cat who she has become best friends with. Diane at Animalsavers is very thorough and the application can look daunting, but don't let it discourage you. You will learn something during the process. I would recommend having your questions ready for when you go and meet the dog and make sure you get all of the information you need before making a decision. We were well prepared but for first timers, this is just a bit of advice as animals are not disposable they are like kids and a huge responsibility. Our dog (we named her Korra) ended up being older than we were told, but that happens with rescues and was not a big deal. She did have some skin issues that have since cleared up after a round of antibiotics and some medicated baths. She needed her teeth cleaned badly which I would never expect a rescue to afford but we knew that when we met her and checked her teeth. She has since had them cleaned and is in tip top shape and is a total lover and loves to show us her new smile. Adoption process was smooth and painless. We love our new baby! Absolutely the most invasive, obnoxious online application I have ever encountered. My sister does dog rescue in NJ and vets her adopters extremely carefully. When I sent her this application she could not believe it. She said she would never treat potential adopters so discourteously. These are people trying to help a homeless pet. It's great that you want to make sure they are good owners, but this is beyond. For example, just to inquire about an animal you have to answer a section of the application that's 2 pages long single-spaced, requiring you to Google answers to a sort of quiz about animal health. You have to footnote your research. You have to answer questions about cats even if you're trying to adopt a dog. You have to answer questions about bloat, a problem large dogs have, even if you are adopting a small dog. On and on and on. I'm pretty sure she's just making people jump through hoops just to have some control she lacks elsewhere, says the armchair psychologist. The tone is super-rude as well. "If you need help and use someone to assist you, please let us know what help they provided at the bottom of this form." "We seek only the very best homes and suggest others adopt one of the many wonderful animals available at their local, public shelters." Are you kidding me? Ugh. My husband and I adopted our black domestic short hair (DSH) cat in March of 2008, and our experience with Animal Savers was extremely positive. We visited Shvartsa the cat and immediately fell in love with him, but we hadn't purchased anything to make our house "cat ready," so Animal Savers let us come back for Shvartsa a week later once we had the litterbox, bowls, and other things a cat needs (which isn't much). We took our kitty to the vet and he checked out 100% healthy thanks to the love and care of Animal Savers. I adopted my 2 year old Shih Tzu Handel (Randall) from Animal Savers, from a listing on Pet Finders. I completed the on-line application and was contacted by Diane for a verbal interview. She asked me a series of questions confirming that I was ready and prepared to adopt a dog. Then we discussed in detail Randall's personality and how he would react to my senior cat. I was very impressed with the knowledge she had about this little rescue. We scheduled an appointment to meet Randall after he was neutered and able to be placed. I drove to a ranch house in the Sacramento area and experienced the property to be normal in comparison to any other private rescue facility that I have ever visited. When Diane met us she was walking the small dogs in an off leash group within the fenced in acreage. It was the cutest site as 6 small dogs completely circled her as they walked along. Randall was one of them. We spent a long time with her discussing the Shih Tzu's personality and getting to know him. We decided it was a perfect match and Randall is my wonderful, sweet dog. As for the adoption, there were no hidden fees as other reviewer's have stated and the price of Randall was posted on the website so it was not a surprise. I found the price to be comparable to other Shih Tzu's listed in private dog rescues. After having him I can truthfully say that Diane took the time to get to know Randall and post on PetFinder's personality traits that he continues to have. Had I taken the thrifty approach to adopt a pet I could have gone to a County funded shelter and picked out a dog with an unknown personality. I prefer to support private dog rescue organizations as they truly love dogs and have dedicated their live to saving unfortunate animals who deserve a happy home. I highly recommend Animal Savers and will contact Diane when the time comes to add another dog or cat to our household. read more

I'm updating to correct an error on timeline from my original review. I emailed animalsaverscal@gmail.com per the instructions on the application on 2/19. I sent a follow up email on 2/22 hoping to hear back over the weekend. Meanwhile, I continued the search for a dog and came across Stonecliffe Animal Rescue. I sent an email to Stonecliffe late Friday afternoon inquiring if a dog will be at Pet Smart in Dublin the next day for Pet Adoption weeken. I received a response Friday evening confirming that the dog will be there. We went to Pet Smart in Dublin the next morning, met the dog who turned out exactly as described by the ad. He's been with us since and we're very pleased. While still at Pet Smart, I sent another email to Animal Savers to withdraw our application. I still did not receive a response over the weekend. On Monday, I entered my yelp review which, as you can see, was not at all positive. I finally received a response from Animal Savers on Tuesday informing me that the dog I applied for did not sound like a good match for us. I replied that we've found our dog and received another response immediately congratulating us on our find. Animal Savers requested that I update my review to correct the error on my timeline. I have done that. The reason they gave for their not-immediate response is that they are a volunteer organization. Stonecliffe is also a volunteer organization and yet I received an immediate response. I'm giving Animal Savers another star simply because they responded within seven days. My husband and I adopted our Chihuahua from Animalsavers 4 years ago. She is the inspiration behind my dog apparel and accessories company. She may have been a bit pricey but if you could understand what the volunteers go through to save these animals on a day to day basis, the cost is priceless. The costs that they have to endure often come out of their own pocket, or they are forced to work with little or no budget. To see the transformation from having severe food allergy issues and being totally emaciated, to needing some dental work, plus not knowing how to play or what play is, this dog is my best friend who is now well fed and happily plays with our other 2 Chihuahuas. My experience with AnimalSavers Advertised on Petfinders: Wheaton Terrier Mix in Berkeley, CA Donations Needed for Cataract Surgery Seeks Foster or Permanent Home Helen Keller, A Wheaten Terrier, approximately 8 years old, was found without a collar or i.d. tags wandering the streets. Sadly she appears to have been thrown out like the trash because she is blind in both eyes due to cataracts and deaf to everything but the loudest noises. Nonetheless, she is energetic, loving, and a sheer delight. She navigates by smell and loud sounds such as clapping or shouting. This sweet dog gets along well with other dogs and is a total gem. She's grateful for every stroke and cuddle, wanting nothing more than a little loving. Will be spayed August 5th. Medical conditions assessed by my veterinarian: * Blind * Deaf * Hypothyroid -- she produced almost no thyroid hormone, confirmed on the lab work received from the first evaluation at AnimalSavers with no indication that treatment provided and no indication of the condition to me * Bad teeth -- 2 of her molars had to be extracted due to extreme decay * Cancer -- 1 large and 1 smaller mammary mass, confirmed as cancer after biopsy * Cardiac arrhythmia -- veterinarian cardiologist evaluation, significant arrhythmia, the result of age or lack of thyroid treatment * Cardiac murmur -- veterinarian cardiologist evaluation, most likely resulting from age * Intact female (Diane wrote on the adoption form that the facility/vet refused to spay my dog due to age --- contrary to what the post stated) Short term condition: * Age assessment 14 -15 (later assessment was reduced to 12-13 after thyroid treatment and weight gain) * active ticks infestation: approximately 15 - 20 dead ticks found in her (newly purchased) bed as a result of the tick bath given by Diane on the day of her adoption * active tape worm infestation: most likely the result of flea infestation as some previous point * underweight Old and special needs dogs require care -- I'm talking about physical and veterinarian care. It is not optional and it's not cheap. I personally believe that if an animal rescue organization cannot afford to provide the required physical care, they should not be "saving" animals. Diane saved/found my dog, but I do not believe she ensured the physical issues were treated (thyroid deficiency at a minimum) and I do not feel she provided accurate information to me 1) on the post or 2) at the adoption in order for me to make an informed adoption decision. Granted, I fell in love with my little girl and would not trade one minute for anything else in the world. But I've spent thousands on her, and it's been only on basic care. She was not truly a candidate for non-essential surgery such as cataract removal as implied on the petfinder post. And while I am happy to provide that level of care (and fortunately I can), that's not the case for everyone. I am a tremendous advocate of the US becoming a no kill nation. We should all look to the shelters for our companions. There are so many wonderful rescues and shelters who do tremendous work in saving and caring for rescued animals. Most of them are also very cognizant of the need to be transparent with the people thinking of adopting these special animals. My advice here based on my experience is buyer beware. read more

Ok so I adopted my lill guy in April and I just love him. He's the greatest . The rescue did very well about responding to my emails regarding the dog I was interested in. The adoption fee is higher than her county shelter but that's because the spay/neuter give shots , micro chip and my little guy was even groomed. The one thing I'm concerned about is that my dog had a higher adoption fee than some others because he was younger (6 months ) a dog that was a a year or 2 was cheaper. I know that senior dogs are discounted and I think that's great no complaint there but I really didn't understand why my dog was $150 more than a dog that was just a year. I asked the lady at the adoption event and she said because he was more desirable because of breed and age. That DID make me uncomfortable. Are you trying to make a profit ???? I don't know. I paid for my little guy anyways. I brought him home and a 2 weeks later we were at the vet. He had skin mites that he had when in the care of the rescue group. Minor fix but makes me wonder the type of condition the dogs are being kept in. After all that being said I would recommend this rescue. I thought the ladies were very pleasant and I believe that they are doing the best they can to SAVE LIVES. If only people would fix their dogs and stop breeding we wouldn't have these issues, rescuing us the best way to go. JUST SAY NO TO GREEDY BREEDERS. read more

This review is based on an honest account of my own personal experience: If you are adopting a hard to place pet, and pay a small fee -- you will likely be pleased with this operation. However, if you are interested in a rescue dog that looks like a desirable breed, be prepared to pay 'breeder's fees' for a pet without papers. After you have fallen in love with your new fur baby, and go to pick it up, you may be surprised when you're handed another paper, that pretty much signs away your right to transfer that pet to another party, any time in the future. The paper states that the pet must be returned to them, if for any reason you find you can't keep it -- which means, they can charge the same fee again to someone else, for the same pet, and will probably not be refunding your money without a fight. This results in them collecting double their money on the same high-priced rescue pet! AnimalSavers might be commended for picking up pets from the shelter, and finding them homes -- however, they do not always deal fairly with people -- and with regard to the desirable breeds, their priority seems to be money. Don't let their "return policy" fool you -- because if anything unpredictable causes things to not work out, they will take the pet back -- but then they may not refund your fee without a huge fight. In addition, they will then go forward and charge the same high fee again for the same pet. For a rescue dog from the shelter, that looks like a Yorkie or a Maltese, they may charge between $600 to $900 -- and if things don't work out for any reason, they may keep your money -- then charge somebody else that same fee again. Therefore, although they may place many pets in good homes -- when it comes to the desirable breeds, money seems to be their priority -- and this causes me to question their ethics. I wish my experience had been different, because I don't like to write negative reviews about anyone -- however, I wish I had been warned myself, before I fell in love with a dog that I could not keep -- and then discovered I was in for a huge fight, when I tried to get a refund for the rather large sum of money I paid. If you have adopted from them, for a reasonable fee, and had no problems come up -- I suppose you would be quite pleased with your experience. That, unfortunately was not my own experience. I fell in love with a dog on rescue me.com so...I filled out an application and it was forwarded to animalsavers. That was on 2/9. A few dates later when I hadn't heard anything, I contacted animalsavers directly to follow up as instructed on the rescueme site. Today is 2/15 and I haven't heard anything from anyone, about anything. The application was long, detailed and involved a lot of internet research. I didn't mind doing it, but it would be nice to know if the dog is still available or found a home or anything--I just want to know whether or not we should look elsewhere at this point. . It just doesn't make sense to me. Don't these animals need homes? At least put on the website if there's going to be an issue or problems getting back to people in a timely matter. Maybe it's not fair to write a review as I've had no interaction with this group--but I feel that at this point in time I should have heard from someone one way or another. read more

I don't understand the previous review. I just visited and adopted Noir the cat who is a fantastic maine coon blend and just a sweetheart. He has been rescued, and has been very well cared for. I paid $85 which is totally reasonable for his shots and stuff (more than reasonable). We adopted Cooper our catahoula mix in April 2009 through Animal Savers. He was described as obedient, loving, friendly, gets along with all animals and loves everyone he meets and housebroken...I thought he was too good to be true. When we met Cooper in person, we immediately felt in love with him and he is everything Animal Savers had described him to be. Cooper, at age three now, is a certified Therapy Dog who visits libraries and nursing home. He is super mellow and loves his job. Animal Savers rescued Cooper from his previous owner who was turning him over to a high kill shelter. It was Animal Savers who saved this wonderful dog and gave him a second chance. I adopted my cat Lola from Animal Savers around 7 years ago. She was part of a litter from Momodoodle. I think her animal name was Streudel. Lola was part Russian Blue and I was happy to pay a "premium" for her so that I could help the other animals that Animals Savers supports. At the time, my adoption fee was going to help pay for a dog that was left in the country and needed surgery to remove rocks from his stomach, which the poor thing ate because he had nothing else. I can't believe some of the reviews that I read about Diane and Animal Savers. Yes, she spends more time caring about animals then she does about interior design but the world would probably be a much better place if we all prioritized things the way that she does. She truly cares about the health and welfare of animals. I came to pick up Lola and only had a cardboard box to take her home in. Diane said that was unacceptable and made me drive to the closest pet store to buy a "proper" carrier, which was the right thing to do and I was happy to do it. The last 7 years with Lola has been a true blessing. Lola is such a happy and healthy cat and is truly a member of the family. I can't imagine life without her. Thank you Animal Savers for bringing Lola into my life! I would not hesitate to adopt another animal from Animal Savers. read more

My boyfriend and I are seeking a new companion for us, our cat and our dog. We came across a gorgeous cat with a sad story on petfinder.com. The cat is up for adoption at AnimalSavers. I sent an email enthusiastic that this cat would still be up for adoption. We did not receive a response and after 24 hours I sent a follow up email. I finally received an email response after 2 days and none of my questions I asked in my email were answered. The adoption is listed as Berkeley on petfinder.com but the cat is located in Sacramento, this was the only bit of information stated in the email I received from AnimalSavers. I responded saying we are willing to travel for the right match and it has been another day with no response. Considering this is a rescue with cats in need of homes, I would assume the response time would be greater when there is an serious potential guardian willing to travel and give a companion pet a great home. Unfortunately, the poor communication skills of this rescue has made us decide to look elsewhere :( read more
