The short ribs were easily the star, but loved the pairing with sweet potato and Gouda. Even has its own sauce. Also try the cheese waffle (their take on Brazilian cheese bread). So unique. The French toast wasn't the favorite. The crust of the brioche was a little over done, but the inside was good, especially with the strawberries. The waffles were very good. Light and fluffy. The atmosphere is fantastic. The people, energy, truly one of a kind décor, and wonderfully unconventional menu all make the experience feel like much more than lunch. The staff was amazing, the food was very good, and the portions were generous. One wrap at our table looked like it may have missed a growth spurt, but everything else arrived ready to feed actual adults. One important logistical note: If you are especially well hydrated, choose your seat strategically. The restroom is on the bottom floor, and getting there may qualify as the day's cardio. I left with two strong conclusions: First, I really like this place. Second, conducting a work meeting here was like going to an amusement park to discuss spreadsheets. I cannot wait to return in a more appropriately fun frame of mind and work my way through everything I wanted to order but couldn't reasonably explain on an expense report. Consider this the preliminary review. The full investigation will require another visit, several friends, and absolutely no agenda.

Returned to the area and decided to stop for lunch. This was one of our favorite diners under the previous ownership. What a disappointment. We waited five minutes before someone came to the front area (diner wasn't very busy). She didn't acknowledge us, but greeted the person next to us who wanted to pay. She told another party to go into the other room to seat themselves. I went to the restroom expecting to have been seated by the time I returned. Wrong, my companion was still waiting. Finally a server came up front and tossed menus into a cubby. That's when the other person said we needed to be seated although she never acknowledged us. The server picked up the menus she had just put down and brought us to a table and tossed menus on table without a word. We opened the menus and they were filthy. So much for COVID protocol. We looked at menus and made our selection. At that time my companion got up to use the restroom. While they were gone the server went to the table across from us and dropped off their bill she did the same to the table beside us. Never said a word to me. When my companion come out and asked me if I had ordered, I replied no, that no one has come to the table. At this point 20 minutes elapsed since we walked in the door. We got up and left. No one noticed. We would never had been treated this way when Valerie was in charge. read more

A fast, fading star....see ya.. We have been coming here for the last 20 years as we loved the menu quality and service. The menu and specials always had something for each of us to enjoy and the value and quality was always there, until the last few times we visited. It seems like the owner and staff have given up. The decor needs a refresh, the service is slow and the servers are cranky and depressed and do little to make you feel welcome or appreciated. If you need something extra, like Mayo you asked for on the side, but they forgot, you are treated with a huff and sneer. The food quality and quantity has also changed and is no longer of the standard or value we enjoyed for so may years. I love poached eggs, so at 1pm, when I asked for this, I was told, "nope, you can't have this as we do not boil water after 11 am"? The owners seem content to let things slide on service, quality and respect as they no longer ask "how was everything" as they know that would open a big discussion which the owner then becomes even more grumpy and rude. Save your money and move on to someone else. The lights may not have fully faded for this longtime Danbury favorite but it sure has for our Family. As they say, going, going, gone....... read more

A good local vibe, full of regular customers. The service was friendly and fast. The food was very ordinary but not bad. It tasted like most ingredients came from one of the national foodservice vendors and little innovation was added. As it is family owned, we ordered a few Greek dishes hoping for something a bit more homey. The Greek salad was mostly iceberg and supermarket grade tomatoes. Perhaps it's no coincidence that "plain" is their middle name. If you want healthy, organic or today's Mediterranean flavors, move on. However, portions were a good value and the menu choices are tremendous. If management is listening, the biggest problem here should be easy to address: everything from the entrees to the soup and sides and salad dressing were so absurdly salty that we could hardly eat them. read more

For context I downloaded yelp to give this review, at exactly 7:30 I went to this diner for dinner not exactly a late time for dinner especially for a diner... usually. As I walked in through the front door a man stepped out from the door and stopped us from entering because "We're closed, we close at 8:00", mind you it was not 8:00 it was 7:30. This place must excel at breakfast because they close before dinner time. Mind you this is a very classic shiny diner in a college town and before this rather disappointing situation I've never seen a diner with such high reflectivity with a closing time anywhere before 10 pm. Yelp is requesting something about ambiance but I couldn't tell you because we didn't even get in. read more

Wow ! What a great find off the highway. My husband and I and the kids were heading home to New Hampshire from Pennsylvania. Found the Windmill Diner at the half way point. Everyone was happy with our meal choices. The kids with their kid meals that included milk or juice and dessert and my husband who ordered the Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner, and I ordered the Broiled Scallops. Delicious. I ate here on 3/2/19 and NEVER again! Ordered steak and broccoli raab, the broccoli was cold and the last bite of steak had a 6" piece of hair cooked in it. We asked the owner to come over and handed her the hair, she looked at and the only thing she said was hmmm a blonde hair I don't know who's that is and ask if I wanted it cooked again. NO apology like it happens all the time. She happily rang up my credit card at the cashier, complained to us that her back hurts and said have a good night. Oh they serve deli meat turkey!
