I really like this place for a casual yet chic lunch/brunch. The decor is beautiful, and the waiters are polite and kind. Unfortunately, the food is on the expensive side (maybe not a frequent visit for me), and the wait when I visited was longer. This place is great for the vibes and, if you're in good company, the wait won't feel as long. This is perfect for a small group of friends wanting good food and a beautiful location. I had the jalapeño chicken and waffles and tried the vegan chicken tenders. The later was a pretty good stand in for real chicken, though nothing amazing on its own. The chicken and waffles were meh: the jalapeño sauce was not spicy at all, and the waffles were pretty hard and dry. My friends got flatbread and seemed to enjoy it more, though also said it was pretty standard for flatbread they'd had before. For someone with a significant amount of social anxiety, there's a comfort in going to a well-run restaurant: there's a rhythm to the service, there's a physical design where you're equal parts a part of community of strangers and connected to the person you came with (or allowed to be comfortably alone if that's what you want), and it has one consistent aesthetic "message" - and have you ever gone to a place where the décor and service and food seem to have been devised by different people, on different days, with a different budget, who were working from different notes from the owner? A good restaurant either has an extremely well-functioning team who are all on the same page, or is directed by one person who's talented in all facets. Before you walk to your seat, you know you're going to have a good experience or a bad one - good food can only make up for so much if the rest of the restaurant isn't well executed. But when you walk in and know that you're in something well-run, and then when the food exceeds that expectation? I know I've found a gem. Enter the Milkstand, a restaurant akin to a French brasserie/old-school American diner, where I just came back from, feeling satiated by a shared plate of crispy chicken and fluffy waffles with maple syrup and sriracha and a Florentine crepe that had been folded into a triangle and tucked with perfectly cooked fresh seasonal vegetables and surrounded by a delicate lemon-butter sauce with two perfectly-over easy eggs atop. Coffee was abundant, served in thick mugs that held the heat up to that moment where I wanted a top-off, and our server Quinn poured with a fabulous flourish that made me think of a Turkish coffee: sometimes aside from appreciating the subtle change in flavor that comes with the aeration of a long pour, I just like a little performance with my caffeine. The space, which some will know is a renovated Byrne Dairy shop (Byrne being a local standby famous for its fresh milk sold in glass jugs and creamy ice cream), might be a challenge for larger groups to meet in, but for families, friends and business meetings of 5 or 6, you'll be able to both hear the people you're talking to and be surrounded by a vibrant community: the man seated next to us had his tablet and phone out and worked, as did a man seated to that man's left, while more people sat in groups of two and four and five, the place beginning to hop between 9 and 10:00. I've heard others say that the noise can get a bit much, but when I was there that wasn't the case - the 60s pop tunes coming from the sound system didn't overpower anything, and my breakfast-mate and I happily talked and ate for an hour. In the past two weeks, I've wanted to find spaces that are conducive to community and connection more than I have in the past -places to talk and laugh and enjoy good food, be alone if I needed to but remain connected to a bigger community. Not worth it. Our party of 5 visited on Saturday around 12 PM. We sat for about 30 minutes waiting for our orders to be taken and an hour more for our food. Maybe it was the lack of respect for 6 Asian women because we saw other tables who arrived after us received their food before we even had our orders taken. In addition to the poor service, one of the salads had a full sheet of PLASTIC in it (which the waiter was hardly apologetic about) and the rest of the food was just okay. Both were tasty but it was super obvious they were cutting corners. My eggs Benedict only came with half of an English muffin and such a ridiculously small amount of the ham and the veggie side. Good lemon sauce drizzled over it, but not lemony enough. The hot sauce cleverly offered on the side by the server added much needed acidity. Started off with a black raspberry milkshake, which I would give five stars -- genuinely may be one of the best milkshakes I've ever had. Jalapeño poppers were also not bad (never tried them before so wasn't sure what to expect). However, the fish and chips were slightly disappointing. The fries were cooked well but the fish had quite a fishy flavor (some may like this, I don't) and was quite surprised by how it was one huge piece of battered fish. The salad was what I expected, except the chicken was not good - it tasted like the breast had been boiled and then quickly grilled - also was unflavorful. Gave this place some time to get into the groove after their Labor Day opening- Here's some thoughts- If as much attention was paid to the food as it was to the marketing, technology and decor maybe this place would be better. The location was very instagrammable. Seems that you CAN do a whole lot with an old Byrne Dairy convenience store. Parking was limited in the front, but available readily on the street. Lots of students on dates. Service- good! We were seated right away at 6pm on a Friday for dinner and it wasn't crowded. Wait staff had a French mime vibe- is that what they were going for? Food- Disappointing all the way around. If a restaurant cannot execute fish tacos correctly, please take them off the menu. These should be immediately removed. The steaks that we ordered were just mediocre, and the bernaise sauce overwhelmed the meat. The french fries were the highlight of this $34 plate. Is breakfast better? I really hope so! Unfortunately this will not be a restaurant I will be returning to. read more

The good news - the food is good. We went there for an early brunch. The breakfast menu is extensive. A southwestern skillet breakfast was delicious (if somewhat smaller than expected (though still entirely adequate)), as was the brie French toast, eggs Benedict, the avocado toast, and the veggie omelet. A milkshake that one diner in our party ordered was very much enjoyed, and it was picture perfect, like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting. All the food was much enjoyed. The not-so-good news: the wait. It was quite a wait to get in, and a good long wait between when we ordered and when our food arrived. As we were waiting in the vestibule, a set of patrons left muttering under their breath to us "Good luck trying to get your food." You never want to be waiting to get into a restaurant from which prior patrons are leaving looking grumpy. The restaurant is relatively new; still, it was a little puzzling when the hostess came and started taking names only AFTER a crowd had been long assembled and lost track of who came before or after whom. I don't think it requires a course in advanced restaurant management to create a working waitlist. Generally the staff seemed stretched a little thin. That may possibly explain the empty tables despite a large crowd outside (I don't think it was social distancing - they didn't seem to have hesitancy about parking groups next to one another). One piece of advice - come early. The earlier the better. We got there before 10:30; the wait was perhaps 15 mins. Those who arrived us after had a much longer wait. Prices were reasonable. Headed to Milkstand for breakfast this weekend. The place is cute, if not a little too Instagram aesthetic for my own personal taste. I got the impression they were short-staffed, but the service may just have been slow. We waited about half an hour for our food. The food was... fine. I got the avocado toast and it was very bland, and my side of bacon was burned. Food was more expensive than I expected for what it was. Our server did not check on us to ask how our food was, which in my experience only happens when the food and/or service aren't actually all that great. Even when our table was being cleared, our server did not ask how everything was. People are obviously flocking to Milkstand, as it was packed the whole time we were there, but it may be a while until they get on their feet if they continue serving mediocre food and not asking for feedback on the diner's experience. read more

My wife and I had breakfast here on a Saturday morning a few months after they opened. As locals, we really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately that was not the case. We were pleased to see that the waitstaff was wearing masks, and wearing them correctly. We did see others come out of the kitchen without masks on, or wearing them below their nose, which was of some concern. My wife ordered the honey-butter toast, and really enjoyed it. I tried some too, and agreed that it was quite tasty. We both thought that for the price, a third piece of bread / brioche would have made the dish a more reasonably priced option. I ordered the banana-chocolate crepe. The crepe was dry and almost tasteless. It may be the worst crepe I've ever eaten. My wife tried it too, and said it was more like a tortilla than a crepe. The crepe was listed on the menu as being served with Chantilly cream. My wife's breakfast was listed as coming with fresh whipped cream. We both received whipped cream that was almost certainly from a can. That's not to say it wasn't fresh, but generally if a restaurant lists "fresh whipped cream" on their menu it means that they make it from scratch. It does not mean that they are serving you whipped cream from a can that is simply not outdated. When I inquired about the Chantilly cream vs. whipped cream our server went to check with someone and came back to say that there is no difference. He offered that perhaps the reason they were listed differently on the menu was that they wanted it to "sound fancy." So essentially he was saying that they wanted to trick people into ordering a dish that they would not actually serve. The server also had come over as we were finishing our meals and asked, "was everything good?" I said "hers was good", making it obvious that my breakfast was anything but. Instead of asking what the issue with my crepe was, the server just said something along the lines of, "OK, good", and left. Why ask if you don't want the answer and want to try to improve the situation if the patron is not happy? We will not be returning to Milkstand unless we hear that significant improvements have been made. read more

The decor was excellent and every seat in the house was packed. Upon walking in, despite the large crowd, only one table had food. We waited over an hour for our food. And we ended up leaving before our order was brought out. A waffle and eggs should not take over an hour -- no matter how hectic opening day is. We learned our lesson and will give them a try in a few months. Bottom line: they should have edited their menu to fewer options they felt capable of serving in a timely fashion, maybe done a soft open, and limited their seating. This was based on both meals at other tables and photos from Yelp. We got an extra order of toast instead. One order equals one slice, so that ended up to be 2 pieces total. The coffee was good as well. Our issue with that was we did not have attentive service. It took forever to get our initial coffee order, forever to get our order in, and forever for refills. Much of the staff was very active. Our server was not attentive whatsoever and impacted our experience. Also, the restrooms were are a pretty big handicap. There are 2 separate and single seats for the whole place. That creates a long wait if you need to use them. Expect to wait in the hallway.
