Milano provides a top notch haircut at reasonable salon prices. Matthew had previously guided one of my former stylists on some new techniques, as he consults for L'Oreal. I loved the cut I got at that time, so I decided to go straight to the source, and I'm so happy that I did. Wanting a change in style, Matthew was great in talking with me about a few options. During the cut he kept letting me know what he was doing, and why, and how I could achieve the finished styling- which is normally impossible after the second day, right? Bzzt- Wrong! Thanks to those styling tips (and a great cut to start with), I'm still able to look like I just stepped out of Milano's new stylish digs on North Avenue! read more

I went to this salon when it was on North Avenue and I would not recommend it to a single person. I asked for an updated balayage - something that isn't too technical for a colorist to do in 2018. I explained that I liked my hair to look natural and for people to not notice it's been done. I had a previous balayage so they could see how I have liked it in the past. I left with 1990's style highlights that were splotchy. I've been getting my hair colored for 10+ years and have never gotten splotchy colors before - that's just sheer carelessness for your clients. Art & Science salon fit me in the next day and fixed me up - they are great and care for their clients! read more

I searched 6 months in Chicago for a salon, tried some but I was disappointed. Milano Hair Design Studio seriously the best! Mahir did an amazing job with my red hair balayage&color. He saved my hair that was turning into a brassy mess and I looked like a lioness. He has styled hair over 20 years and finding him was the best thing I could have done. Also he did a wonderful cut with my layers. Highly recommend this salon for both color and cut. ** The salon has a great atmosphere! read more

I absolutely ADORE this place!! I've been going to Milano for a while now and I will not go anywhere else. Even though I've moved from Ukie Village to Andersonville on the far north side, I refuse to change (and believe me, that a trek). I actually came to this salon after leaving Salon 1800 in Lincoln Park. You would think such a shi shi place like that could keep my business, but it doesn't hold a candle to Milano. First impressions are that it's very clean and modern, with such a great staff. It's not conveniently close to a CTA line, but it is easy to get to via the Chicago bus, or there is plenty of parking if you drive. Now, my favorite thing about this salon is Michael (and I know I'm completely butchering the spelling of his name). : ) He is the owner and by far the BEST stylist I have ever had. He always has the best ideas for your hair, and if you already have a style in mind, he can tweak it perfectly so it fits your hair type. He just does such a great job. I have never left unhappy. Plus, (and this is something that has always bothered me about going to a salon) you can have a genuinely interesting conversation with him. If you're like me, you hate that annoying small talk that goes along with a haircut. Not the case with Micheal. So, check this place out. You will love it (and probably become a regular like me). read more

Matthew is my man. He gets me in the chair and can work wonders with my hair. He's a color expert and travels all over the country for L'Oreal. If you're even remotely interested in doing the color thing (whether to give yourself a new look or to color those oh so lovely grays) he's the one you should see. The salon itself is great. It has huge picture windows that look out onto North Avenue (yes, you'll feel like you're on display but it's just as much fun to people watch), there's always mini chocolates for the snacking, and Kamir up front will text you a reminder for your appointment/if someone's running late. Ladies and Gentleman if you're looking to make a change or give your hair a boost, head to Milano! read more

I paid $25.00 for an eyebrow wax. There are two problems with this. 1) The girl told me she wanted to wait until my brows grew out more. She didn't wax practically anything. She did make it MORE obvious my hair was overgrown; which made me look worse than when I walked in. I tried to tell kindly tell her that I just really wanted them thin but she told me to wait and come back in 2 weeks "free of charge" when I called to try to do this; the receptionist told me they did no such thing(even after explaining the situation. ) I ended up having to go elsewhere that happened to do a fabulous job for the low price of $10. 2) $25 dollars is way too much money for a service that was never completed. Its like going to get your hair dyed; and the stylist refusing and then charging you $90 for it. read more

Once you find a great stylist, you'll do anything to stick with him. I have been seeing Matthew for nearly 4 years. He's so great that I followed him to this location after he left a salon near my place a few years ago. Yes, it's worth the two buses from where I live to get out there! The salon is small and personal yet upscale. Even though the owner isn't my personal stylist, he knows my name and chats with me whenever I come. They're also not afraid to uncork a bottle of wine for the clients if the mood strikes. :) Yes, you're going to pay more here than you would at a Supercuts. I promise though that it's well worth the investment. I don't know how I managed to walk around with my old hairstyle before I started coming here....that's the difference. read more

I love this place. I got a haircut and balayage last fall, and it grew out beautifully. This weekend, I went back and had the same thing done, and I'm ridiculously happy with how it turned out. Charissa is possibly the best stylist I've ever been to--she is easy to talk to, funny, a good listener and very talented. I am unreasonably protective of my hair (like, once I went a year without getting it cut because I don't trust anyone to touch it) and Charissa is the first stylist I've found in the city who I have full faith in. As long as I live in Chicago, this is where I'll go. The salon as a whole is a very pleasant place to spend a Saturday morning. It's a bright, attractive space and everyone is very friendly. The jellybeans at the counter are a nice touch, too. :-) read more

Amazing stylists, my favorite is Mahir. If you need amazing cut, color he's the guy to go to. No one has ever cut my hair like he does. My hair never looked this good...my review is late, but this shows how much I loved it. Had many different people do my hair, but no one has done it this good. Thanks read more

I absolutely love this salon and definitely recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a stylist! You will once you go here. All of the employees are so nice and friendly and talented. I had never dyed my hair before other than from a box but I wanted a change. I went to Mahir as a recommendation since he is the king of balayage. I am now going back regularly to touch up the blonde and I am always SO happy with the results! I look great and I get so many compliments on my hair. I would highly suggest Mahir if you are ready to make a change but need some ideas and support. I've now been going to see Mahir for a year and I am happy to say that Mahir is my stylist now and it will remain that way! read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE! I did not have a hair stylist in chicago, and usually do my own color (bad experiences, low on cash) but now i am getting married, and i had to get a professional job done. i walked by this place a few times and found it to look less pretentious than other places (especially the ones in nearby wicker park), so i just followed my gut. it turned out that everybody there is really nice, down to earth and fun. and michael is awesome! he did the best job with my hair. not only do i love the color, but i also did not feel like i had to go home and wash my hair because the 'do made me look like an idiot. and yes, i definitely agree with Melissa - you can have real conversations with everyone there instead of having to do the annoying small talk thing. A definite recommendation! read more

If I could give 10 Stars I would :-) AMAZING. I have been a loyal customer to Milano for the past 4 years... and wouldn't dare step foot anywhere else. I am obsessed with Michael (Mahir) and his salon. He is honestly the most talented hair artist ever. I am not an easy one to please, and this man does it every time. Their new studio is super chic, to die for style, just like Michael and his staff. Michael, Kabir, Matthew and Kelly are all fantastic and so much fun to be around. If you are looking for locks that rock and a fresh new look (every time you come, even 4 years later) this is the place to get it. 5 stars doesn't do this place justice. It's my home away from home :-) read more

I have been going to Milano Hair for about 4 years and would never dream of going anywhere else. Michael (Mahir) , the owner, takes great pride in his work and his salon; he truly is an artist. I love to change my hair, the color, the cut, the style...it's like an accessory for me. Michael is always enthusiastic about my thoughts but gives great advice and directions to my ideas. I trust him wholeheartedly with my hair, and this is so important with a stylist. About a year ago, I bought my husband a gift certificate for a haircut...he didn't think it was worth the money to go to a salon for a guy's haircut. He has been going to Michael every since. His hair style and even the texture has changed since he has been going to Milano...his hair looks great. I got married this summer and Michael did my updo and all my bridesmaids had their hair done for the wedding at Milano Hair. Our hair turned out amazing!! The styles were all individual, contemporary and complementary for each of us. I am so blessed to have found Michael and Milano Hair Design Studio to keep me looking great, on my wedding day and always. read more

Fav! Fav! Fav!!! There is no one that can color and cut hair like Mahir in the city of Chicago! His energy and his work is A++! Thank you!!

I moved to Chicago from Boston, bringing my hair color formula that uses Goldwell color products--Milano is a Goldwell salon. I first called for a consultation, bringing the formula and discussinging the color and highlight pattern. I was assured that they had the Goldwell colors and could continue my hair coloring. However the stylist, Kelly, changed the color formula without telling me making my hair very orange and without any dimension. She also was to trim my hair only to even off the bottom. However she cut and texturized it--which I did not ask for, saying that I needed to have the layers blended (the hairstyle was supposed to be layered). When I returned to have my hair "fixed," the owner told me: "We are artists, we take chances, sometimes they work and sometimes they don't." Let them experiment with their own hair--and if they wanted to experiment with mine, they could at least have told me. It's been 3 months, and my hair still needs several months of growth before I can return to my former cut and have enough of my own hair color to try and return to the former color/highlights. jfriday read more

I've been meaning to write this review for a long time. I've been going to Matt for about 18 months now, and he is bar-none the most talented person who has ever cut my hair. I understand he travels all over the country teaching other people how to cut hair better. Pro. I mean, the guy is sponsored by Loreal - he's like the Tony Hawk of hair. Granted, all that is probably over-kill for me...I have the most basic possible haircut, yet Matt routinely spends about 45-minutes on it. But it shows (if I do say so myself), and the price is totally reasonable. Does it cost more than "Average Joe's Sports & A Bimbo Cuttery?" Of course, but for less than the cost of a tank of gas, it's well worth it. On top of that, he and the other guys there are just a blast to hang out with. Ditch the chop shop and get over to Milano. read more

Courtney who does eye brows is an absolute artist. I found her off of Instagram and she is a complete artist. She takes so much time to articulate how eye brows fit on your face, gives advice to even them out, grow them in. Mine have never looked better and even convinced me to tint them! I am now addicted to it and convince all of my friends! Follow her on instagram to see befores and afters of brows! @thepowderandglory read more

I've been seeing Michael for the past 10 years off and on and if I ever switched stylists and went elsewhere usually because he's booked solid and I needed a cut right away..I always instantly regret it because no one has come close to his cutting and styling technique...He's the best out there and he makes you look and feel great ! Did I mention he's cute too? read more

I've been going to Michael for the past three years after receiving a recommendation from my previous manager. He used to work in a salon on Michigan Ave before opening up his own place. While it is a little bit out of the way for me (I live in Lakeview), it's definitely worth it to have my hair cut by him. I'm very particular about my hair and Michael is the only one in the city that I trust. Take a cab or the Chicago Ave bus and get over there ASAP! read more

If Michael ever leaves Chicago, I just might have to follow him! I have been going to Michael for about 2 years for my cuts and color. He always listens to what I say and makes great suggestions too. His cuts are just perfect - I basically just blow dry my hair everyday and it falls into place becuase my haircut is so good. The shop is very nice, and Michael is always accomodating. His brother Kabir (the receptionist) is so friendly and makes awesome movie recommendations free of charge :-) The 66 bus runs right past the shop, and there is lots of street parking. I honestly will never go anywhere else in Chicago. read more

I went in with a loose idea for a haircut and told my stylist, Caitlyn, my concerns (volume mostly). Not only did she politely give her expertise about trying something different, she guided me through the hair style and gave me a do with great bounce. She also touched on fixing some of the things I hadn't articulated I liked (adding more texture). I felt like she understood what my hair could and couldn't do and why without much effort on my part. Definitely recommend! read more

Went to Milanos (owner Michael) for a haircut. Loved it. I am extremely picky about haircuts and would rather never try anyone new, BUT I am a fan and will def be going back to this little salon in the future. Everyone was very friendly and the owner gave me free samples of shampoo/conditioner and a pretty big size bottle of lotion as a gift. =) Price was average, 65 for a ladies cut. read more

I have been going to Michael for a year and a half now. Ever since going to college out of state and then moving to Chicago, I haven't had a steady hairdresser for years. I read the great reviews about Michael on yelp and am so glad that I took the recommendation. Michael gives me an excellent cut and color. It's a very clean and relaxed environment. It's not one of those over the top- you're not good enough to be here- type of salons. Everyone's very nice and hospitable that works there. Definitely recommend going there! read more

Eeeek. I really wanted to like this place.... BUT... I got my eyebrows waxed and in 10 + years of eyebrow waxing I have never ever had a reaction to wax but my eyes were left with bright red burns under my brows which then scabbed up. I do many things last minute, so yesterday (Saturday afternoon) was not anything different. I walked into Milano Studio to see if they would take me in as a walk-in appointment for blow-dry and style. I was heading to a 1950's party and had to look like Jackie Onassis Kennedy. The staff was wonderful about accommodating me and my unique needs, especially Kelly, who was my stylist. I walked out of the salon 100% satisfied. My overall appearance at the party was a big hit. read more

Julia N. does an amazing job with both color and cuts! Wouldn't go anywhere else.

I've been going to Milano for a couple years now. Michael, the owner and - in my opinion - best hairstylist I have ever found, has taken me from long hair down to my current crop. I needed to get rid of the length and Michael and I had so much fun chopping it all off. I literally have a super short haircut and it looks great. I've never received so many compliments for a haircut in my life. I even carry a bunch of his business cards in my purse and hand them out on an almost daily basis because of the amount of people that ask me about my haircut. Michael has a sixth sense about hair and the silhouette and I trust him completely. I'll never go anywhere else. p.s. this is my first Yelp review and I joined just so I could tell people about this place. read more
