One of our 20-year old furnaces was identified as defective and was locked out by the technician on December 26th. It was necessary to replace it before truly cold winter weather returned. Due to the age of the equipment, we decided to replace the two furnaces, one air conditioning unit, and a hot-water heater. I contacted and received quotes for the work from four heating and air conditioning contractors. One of these was Mike's Heating and Cooling which I contacted based on excellent reviews of their previous work. Mike, the owner, came by the next day and prepared an estimate on the spot. I was impressed by his knowledge of local codes and the fact that he checked small details and noticed some potential problems. He suggested Bryant heating and air conditioning equipment sized to match the existing equipment based on a balance of their reliability and cost considerations. He indicated he could complete the work within a few days of a decision even though it was the week between Christmas and the New Year. Three of the quotes I received were relatively close together, but careful reading of the proposals showed that Mike had specified superior models in several cases. Based on pricing, reputation, experience, and my own impressions I decided to go with Mike's company on January 2 (a Thursday). It turned out to be a great choice. Mike and his coworkers delivered the necessary equipment the following day, and five workers arrived on Monday to perform the work. They completed this extensive job in a single day. Just in the nick of time, there was a cold snap the next day, followed by snow. The work was performed in an efficient and neat manner. Care was taken to meet all code requirements since we arranged to have the work inspected by the county. A couple of days later Mike returned to make sure everything was operating correctly and to change a filter on a humidifier and deal with some rust he had noticed on the return duct in the basement. Further investigation showed that the rust was due to a significant leak from a drain immediately above the duct. Without Mike's careful attention to detail this potentially serious problem might not have been identified. It is never a good thing to have to replace such expensive systems in a home and the whole experience is very stressful. I feel lucky to have identified Mike as the contractor for this work. His pricing, professionalism, and responsiveness did much to make an unpleasant situation more tolerable. When things break, I usually follow a set procedure of 1) trying to figure out if I can fix it myself and 2) See if someone in my family (some of whom are skilled technicians) can fix it. Its cheaper but takes a few extra days. Well, when my heat went out back in February (which was really cold), I knew I could not take my usual long approach to try to save some money and needed a skilled technician right away. I called Mike after reading the Yelp reviews and am pleased to say I know have my "AC guy". Mike was able to squeeze me into his schedule right away. I had no part broken, but the fix was nonetheless semi-tricky. The code apparently was showing I had a clog somewhere in my gas furnace inhibiting fresh air intake necessary for proper combustion. I hadn't touched the furnace in years and Mike found that I had vines growing on the exhaust valve. He removed them and vacuumed out air intake valve on the heater. The charge was entirely reasonable. This seemed to alleviate the problem as the furnace began operating and the house promptly warmed up. But it proved temporary. A couple days later the heat went out again. I called Mike and he came out the next day. He discovered a separate clog (I believe it was in the condensation discharge line--it was inside the house whereas the prior clog was outside) and was able to fix the problem for good. Mike carefully explained it was a separate problem and charged a separate fee, but I felt the fee was entirely reasonable and worth it. In fact, across the two separate visits, I believe I paid less than some other companies would have charged for a single visit. And for those who believe I may be being naive, I also had Mike perform a separate job for me of installing a new thermostat. In the process, the AC wiring must have somehow got disconnected, as my AC did not turn on when I tested it out a couple weekends ago. But I only discovered this a full 2 months after Mike performed the work. I called Mike this past week and he promptly fixed it for free as part of his general warranty. Mike also suggested a few maintenance items I could do myself. Overall I am very satisfied. read more

Mike came out to my townhouse to inspect a heat pump that wouldn't allow the outdoor unit to turn on, or would shut it off after about 30 seconds -- typical symptom of a low refrigerant level. Mike came out the next day and offered comprehensive service to find and repair the leak, and included various price estimates (depending on where the actual leak would be found). He also gave estimated prices for replacing the system. I opted for the repair and he came back with a partner 3 days later to perform a leak search. After 3 hours of isolating the different parts of the system and testing each one (first the lines, then the indoor unit, then the outdoor unit), it became apparent that the indoor coil had a pinhole leak somewhere. He left his gauges on the pressurized indoor unit for 2 days and sure enough -- steady consistent drop in pressure each time I checked (every few hours or so). The following week he came back with a new coil and spent another 6 hours or so making the repair, vacuuming the lines, reconstructing the condensate line, adding lost refrigerant, and checking all the connections. Sadly, I barely needed heat after the repair, as the weather finally decided it was time for spring! But I have since needed the A/C a few times and it is quite cold - spits out of the vents at about 52 - 53*F once it gets going. After a few weeks the was a problem with water leaking around the unit. I called Mike on a Sunday and he came out that evening and found the condensate line was clogged, which he proceeded to replace without any additional cost. All around I've been very happy with the service. Mike is very professional and straightforward, sticks to his reasonable prices, and takes the time to do the job right. There might be cheaper HVAC techs out there, but I'm not going to find out. I'll stick with Mike. read more

I give the highest recommendation to this HVAC Company. Mike and his team did an excellent job. Very late on a Wednesday afternoon, my A/C unit for the main floor stopped working. I called my regular HVAC company with whom I had 2 HVAC maintenance agreements (costing close to $800 annually) and was told that a technician could not come until the following week. I was having house guests and a family party that weekend and needed a working A/C unit. I called Mike's at around 5 pm, and he personally answered the phone. Mike sent a technician to my house that evening. I knew that I needed a new unit because we had been having problems before. Mike came to the house first thing on Thursday morning to provide an estimate. Mike than got on the phone with several Carrier distribution locations to locate a new unit and drove to Baltimore that afternoon to pick up the unit. He arrived with his team on Friday to install the new unit. They were so professional and extremely efficient and my new unit was up and working by noon. Their clean up and removal of the old unit was spotless. In the end, a new unit was installed in less than 36 hours -- how's that for service! The installation of the new unit with labor costs was $2500 less than what my former HVAC company had quoted to me. Mike has been an incredible find. I first used him on a hot day when my central AC went out. He showed up as promised a few hours later and was able to diagnose and fix the problem on the spot. Made for a much nicer hot summer night. We also discussed the age and condition of my system - it was getting on its last legs, but I wasn't quite ready to invest in a new furnace & AC. Mike didn't push but was very honest explaining all the options and costs. Fast forward a year or so and inevitably the furnace went out. My first call was to Mike, who came over that afternoon even though he was busy. We spent a lot of time going over the options & I decided it was time to invest in a new system rather than replacing another expensive part. This past week we tried turning on our a/c and were disappointed to find that the air was not cold. We called several companies and Mike's was the only one that was able to make a house visit the same day. Upon his arrival, he inspected our compressor and a/c unit and explained that our unit was two decades old and that it would be expensive to diagnose and repair such an old unit. Considering the age of the unit, his recommendation was to replace the unit entirely. While it was rather upsetting to get this sort of news, Mike delivered the news very professionally and it never felt like he was being pushy. After discussing his recommendation me and my wife both agreed that it was the better long-term solution despite the higher immediate cost. In the same visit, Mike drafted a contract that we all signed and I submitted a deposit for the work to get done. Mike replaced the unit 3 days later with his team and they were FAST. Yesterday was the lead-up to forecasted days of bitter cold weather, so naturally, that is the day the heater decides to take a break. Our regular HVAC person was unavailable, so we went to Yelp looking for a Five-Star solution. We connected with Mike, the owner of Mike's Heating and Cooling Inc. He told us he was sending out one of his really good technicians, Ray, the same day to address our problem. He arrived right on time and within 20 minutes, knew exactly what was causing the problem and knew just what it would take to fix it. While Ray extracted the bad part from our furnace, Mike (the owner) drove from his office to the distributor to pick-up the new part and deliver it to my home so the new part could be installed immediately (just as snow started top fall). Wow! Taking about outstanding customer service, that is just what we received. Mike and Ray quickly responded to our call for assistance, arrived at the promised time, diagnosed the problem, fixed the furnace and left everything just as it was when he arrived. We are very pleased to have discovered Mike's Heating and Cooling of Silver Spring. We had a mysterious breakdown of our high end HVAC hybrid system. The first couple of contractors contacted seemed less than interested in explaining anything about the system, only in getting a commitment to fix it for a specific minimum price. In contrast, Mike Z. of Mike's Heating & Cooling Inc of Silver Spring took the time to explain the likely problem, options to fix the problem, and proposals to take advantage of the remaining time of the system's warranty. Because of the outside low temperatures, it was not possible to completely diagnose, fix, and verify the fix immediately (this is a real issue with heat pumps in the winter). Fortunately we have natural gas backup. Mike promised to return on the first warm set of days and that he did without prompting, just in time for air conditioning weather. My feeling is that Mike has excellent HVAC skills and matches that with integrity and commitment to take care of his customers. Mike Zamani's service was exceptional. We met a week ago to see whether he could replace the commercial heat pump in our condo. The units installed when the building was new were no longer available. A large contractor told us we couldn't put in a heat pump, and had to switch to expensive all-electric heating. Mike visited dealers and found the closest available size heat pump (4 inches taller), and had a duct expert visit the condo to ensure the new unit could be fitted into the existing sleeve and closet. Both returned today with the additional personnel needed to complete the job. The removal of the old unit was a thriller of tiny tolerances: removal of breaker boxes and doors to complete. Installing the new model meant redesigning and creating the ducts, rerouting the airflow, and changing the breaker boxes. Within 6-1/2 hours, the removal, the redesign, the creation of the new ducts and airflows, and the testing of the heating and cooling was finished. The thorough cleanup made the place look like nothing had happened. Super service, and Mike's price was better than the large contractor's for a more expensive form of heat. read more

The first time I called Mike, I was desperate. It was an extremely hot day at the beginning of the summer season and the AC wasn't working. I called several places, all had over a wait of over a week. I called Mike and he was able to squeeze me in the very next morning. He fixed the AC and it has been working beautifully ever since. The second time I called for a different issue. I needed to have the damper in one of the units fixed/repaired. It had been broken for several months and ARS -who installed the AC in my brand new house- would charge me over $2,000.00 to have the damper and board replaced (which is why I was waiting to have it fixed). I called Mike and he sent Ray, who was extremely professional and knowledgeable. He came to my house to see what the problem was, ordered the part and came back a few days later to install it. He worked diligently until he fixed everything; it turns out the board was not broken and didn't need replacement. I'm very glad I found Mike and his group of skilled workers. He was quick to respond on a very cold day this winter to assess the problem with my elderly mother-in-law's furnace, which had gone out. After an initial quick fix didn't hold for long, he advised replacing the very old unit. He gave an honest assessment and I never felt pressured to replace. When we decided to replace (old water heater too), the crew was very fast and efficient which was a godsend for my mother-in-law. The price was very reasonable and the new Bryant furnace and AO Scott water heater are great. A WSSC inspection was included and I delayed for a few months to have them come out to inspect. The inspector wouldn't pass the job because he couldn't see a UL listed number on the vent sleeve that goes to the chimney. I called Mike, and even though months had passed, he brought his chimney specialist back over right away and he re-installed the sleeve for no charge. It's nice to know I can call on Mike in the future. His company is honest, reasonably priced, fast, friendly and very respectful of homeowner's situations. read more

I am out of town dealing with a water damage emergency at my Dad's house in Massachusetts and desperately in need of someone to troubleshoot a problem in my home in Silver Spring involving a thermostat that wasn't communicating with the boiler. Mike installed an HVAC unit in our single family home in 2010 and has been maintaining since then. He had been referred by a colleague that was very pleased about Mike's work. The original installation and the operation of our A/C and Furnace was and, has been flawless. Mike is unique. I have had the heating and cooling systems on my 3 properties break down late in the evenings, disrupting the most peaceful part of our day. And when I have called Mike - during hours when everybody should be comfortably at home - he has showed up at the front door meticulously diagnosing the problem and then either repairing it right then or creating quick temporary fixes, only to return the next day to finalize them. Mike is a life-saver! He quickly installed a new AC unit in my apartment when other companies told me we would need a crane. Mike and his guys carried the new unit up two flights of stairs and hoisted it out on the roof in peak DC heat and humidity. All of the guys on his crew are exemplary--skilled, professional, and just plain nice. My dog liked them, so consider them all pet-approved. When my new unit needed to be topped off with coolant after summer rolled along into sustained peak heat for a couple weeks, Mike came back right away.
