Fabulous sandwiches at very reasonable prices. I had a Reuben (on Zingerman's rye) which I believe was $12. Most sandwiches are around that price and they also have combo deals (eg half sandwich and soup) for great prices as well. Service was friendly and the sandwich came out reasonably quick. It came with a pickle spear on the side and was packaged neatly. It's a big sandwich but I was starving and finished it. Absolutely delicious. Great ratio of ingredients, cheese melty and bread toasted perfectly. There's a massive menu and it was a bit overwhelming but they have the top 20 most popular displayed. A friend suggested this deli and what a find! Mike's Deli is open from 11am - 3 pm Tuesday - Saturday. I got the Wolverine and my husband got a Rueben with coleslaw and Russian dressing. I was shocked by the level of disrespect I experienced from an employee today. Seventeen minutes before closing, we placed an order, and instead of being treated with basic courtesy, we were met with a death stare and head shaking. As a business, customers are naturally going to come in before closing time that's to be expected. If your staff doesn't want customers, that's a serious concern. I got the #1 Mikes Favorite. It was decent. I happened to be in town and decided to get a quick sandwich at the deli. I realize its not fast food and it was busy, but it took 28 minutes for the most popular item to be handed to me, with no special order. After u order u just stand there and begin to wonder did they totally forget about me? They give a loud whoop for tippers including me, but let people stand there wondering. What did do wrong-how did I fail you Mike? Im so sorry I was hungry. I for one will stick with The Bread Basket. The lower rating I had previously given this place was purely due to the bread. Since they offer choices other than Challah, a much higher rating is called for. Mike's menu sets itself apart from other delis through the sheer variety and creativity of its offerings., All of the ingredients are very high quality. That includes meats, cheeses, and even side offerings, like the potato chips. Service is also fast and friendly. Highly recommend-- just ask for a bread other than Challah! read more

I've tried a variety of delis and Mike's Deli is my favorite, hands down. They have over ninety different types of sandwiches - all customizable. I always order the #64 Gobble Moo Oink which has turkey, bacon, cream cheese, tomato, and deli mustard on grilled sourdough. The sourdough is always perfectly toasted. I love that they carry the Great Lakes kettle chips and carry turkey from Michigan. My only complaint is about their macaroni and cheese - it had so much cheese in it that it had become plasticky and clumpy. read more

Decided to take my aunt out to lunch who recently moved to Chelsea. This was the third restaurant we have been to in the area. The service was Ok. The three of us all had the same sandwich #1 Mikes. All of us had the same reaction, over cooked and tasteless. A good deli is a thing of beauty. Mike's Deli fits that category to a tee. Jules and I ended up at Mike's on our last day of the Protospiel, eager to find an early lunch before a few more hours of game testing. Coming in, the staff was hard at work already, slicing meat and cheese and otherwise prepping for a busy day of sandwich-making. Ordering, Jules opted for a turkey club, while I instead chose the Italian hoagie. And, simple though those may be, the staff at Mike's executed them to perfection. Both the meat and the cheese on my hoagie was obviously hand-cut and of some of the best quality cold-cuts that I've had in years. I did ask for some additional Italian dressing for my hoagie, but that was primarily because it was simply damn tasty and complemented the sandwich contents so well. Jules had similar comments on her sandwich which, for a 'half-sandwich' as part of her combo, was notably sizable. Mike's is the sort of deli I'd love to have around the corner from my workplace. I hate to do it but I am going to be the one to deflate the balloon. The corned beef here was definitely nothing to brag on. At all. The bread from Zing's rocks, grilled especially, but the meat? Meh. I sampled a Mike's Favorite with corned beef, swiss, coleslaw and Russian grilled on rye. The bland tasting meat was not really the star here (so strange with corned beef really), the very nice cheese and bread taste dominated the experience. It was good but really other than the bread nothing that special. The price was nice but I'd rather pay more for better. I will be frank, I am not much of a cook. I can go to Zing's though and buy bread, then pick up some Boar's Head meats and make the same sandwich at home. To me this is a sad statement indeed. I am probably spoiled and clearly I did order wrong but what I did get was underwhelming. I can only judge a place on what I do eat. I debated between a three and a four because they are super friendly in here, I ordered wrong, the sandwich was still good-ish and it was a decent pickle but the potato salad side was really not good at all to my palate. This made the place only a three overall. I would go back, try other things (clearly) but I was not a fan and found it just ok. I would not trek to Chelsea specifically for it. The super glowing reviews did not help. I was expecting way more and this is simply a sandwich place, not a real deli. read more

Best deli sandwich ever! I love it when things are done right, and the folks at Mike's do everything right. My sandwich always arrives with perfectly aligned slices of meat and cheese, and if you want take out, it's packaged impressively to withstand travel. I've tried different things on the menu, and have a hard time identifying a favorite. I do love Mike's Favorite, and the Stingray Club. I enjoy a good sandwich, and have gone hunting for them. Zingerman's is good, but their grilled bread is way too hard. Mike's uses Zingerman's bread, but grills it perfectly. They use simple ingredients to make a perfect, humble sandwich, and the cost is more than fair for what you get. The owner knows my name, and is always so pleasant. The girls behind the counter are sweethearts. You couldn't pay me to say something bad about this deli, I absolutely love it. read more

Stopped in for a quick lunch. Had planned on going to Common Grill before I realized it would be $15 for a sandwich. Been spending too much on eating out recently, so I came here instead to pay about half the price. Ordered the Dutch Treat per Colleen Z's rec, and man, is it tasty. It's roast beef, gouda cheese, honeycup mustard. I ate it about an hour later so it was cold, but it was still delicious. Microwaved the second half and it was even better. I can't imagine what it would've been like fresh off the grill. The honeycup mustard makes it really outstanding. For a sandwich, it's a little expensive at $8.69. I've had just about every sandwich here over the years and I cant think of one that I would not be excited to have. Before they got rid of the peanut butter (To accommodate people with peanut allergy's) they made me one of the best peanut butter and Jelly sandwiches of my life. They Grilled it. It was Magical. So many choices of sandwiches on the chalk board and every one I try I love. Though my favorite is the "Horsin around #67" and the "Mignano's Meandering #68" with a large order of their unrivaled Tomato Bisque. Huh, I just realized their sequential significance.. I cannot even believe that I am writing this review. To be honest, I am completely disappointed and a little in awe that my family's favorite "treat" for dinner here in Chelsea is no longer. The moment we walked into the store tonight, we felt something was different. There was no warm greeting. Kevin always at the register, smiling, knowing exactly what my daughter would want to order. The man at the register was polite, but not outgoing and friendly. We placed our order, sat down, and began the discussion that the entire atmosphere inside the store was a bit different. The time between placing the order and the food appearing on the table was abnormally long--about 20 minutes. The menu looked the same. But when the food was set down at the table, my husband immediately said "something does not look right". The portions are smaller, the bread is cut into thinner slices. I fear that some of the ingredients have been swapped out for lesser ones. All of our sandwiches were undercooked - cheese not melted, meat cold. Just like another reviewer said "Only time will tell" if the new management will take this sandwich shop to greatness or will it become another disappointing location to get a meal in Chelsea. read more

It's been two months since I learned that Kevin sold Mike's Deli to new owners, and my first visit since hearing the news. I read the latest reviews with great trepidation, and was looking forward to learn what changed, how, and how much. The verdict is best quickly offered with the following chocolatey metaphor: It is as if Hershey bought Godiva. Few complain that Hershey chocolate stinks. It's entry-grade stuff, the least of the chocolate you'd want to put in your body, and tasty enough. Most of us extol the decadent deliciousness of Godiva chocolates. And so that's the economic landscape of chocolate. But what if Godiva retired and sold out to Hershey? Certainly, the new owners would be ill advised to make any drastic changes to jeopardize their new property. No, any changes would be subtle and gradual - and most assuredly, cheapening. Beyond the metaphor is the food. Here goes: The #37 Reuben was different. The sauce tasted different somehow. The corned beef was sliced thinker than before. The swiss had a different, less smooth flavor to it. The bread is TOTALLY different. Recall my initial review lauding the presence of Zingermans bread in the sandwiches? I saw not a single Big Z wrapper behind the glass last night. The thinner slices of bread deformed to the sandwich unlike before. The #38 Stingray seemed closer to what I remember, certainly, save the seemingly cheaper, thinner sourdough. I'm sure the sandwich's having been grilled detracted from the switch-out of brand of bread. My son proclaimed that the kids' hot dogs were as good as ever. Yay. I found myself second-guessing with every minute visited, with every bite, whether something had truly changed about my experience, or if I was just perceiving a faux difference. Indeed, I asked myself time and again: Had I walked into a Godiva chocolatier and was unwittingly offered a sample of what turned out to be Hershey's chocolate, would I have noticed? Would anyone notice? Would you? That difference - perceived or real - underscores the chasm between excellence and mediocrity, between 3 and 5 stars. I hope the new owners understand that, be it fair or not, perception is everything. read more

FOLLOW UP REVIEW: 1/29/13 Nervously I went back to Mike's deli to assess the damage. Pleasantly surprised to see some updating of the facility. More seating available inside. Nice aesthetic changes.... The staff has changed, not entirely, but the new staff is settling in and bringing a happier demeanor to the register. After speaking with one of the owners regarding my previous visit and the difference in the food/preparedness he informed me that they are still learning the nuances of the devoted masses.... after I expressed to him the main differences I noticed in my sandwich he offered to correct the previous problem by making some changes to the preparation of the sandwich and cooking of the sandwich. I was very pleased at the outcome. Just like coming home I was sad to learn that they don't read or have any interest in the YELP reviews. I hope, for their success, they swallow their pride and read the reviews for both the good and the bad. read more

Mike's Deli is awesome. This is probably the best deli I've ever been to. Like the first reviewer mentioned, they have a giant chalkboard listing all of their sandwiches. All of the sandwiches I've had have been really good, except the Stingray. That might be the greatest sandwich ever. It's smoked turkey, bacon, aged swiss, and mayo on grilled sourdough. It's fantastic. The only thing that would make this place better is if they served beer, but that's just being picky. read more

Wow! Am I glad I read the reviews of Mike's Deli before I went to lunch there today. Thank you! I passed on going to the popular Common Grill to try The Stingray at Mike's. What an awesome sandwich! I've had turkey sandwichs before, but this one is done to perfection! The grilled sourdough is fantastic. I can't wait to go back to Mike's! UPDATE: I went back to Mike's the very next day and tried Larry's Wimpy Chicken, a grilled chicken salad sandwich with bacon! (I added lettuce and tomato). This sandwich was amazing too! Here's the deal, I'm a sandwich kind of guy.....5-stars, if I could give it more I would in a heartbeat. I've eaten there for lunch with my lady the past three days and plan on going again tomorrow. Mike's Favorite, Mike's Reuben and the Renaissance.....all three AMAZING! I plan on making my way through the menu for the next few weeks while I'm here working.
