Got a haircut from Tony today. When I arrive I was able to sit right down. Tony gave me a great hair cut; right length and shape. He cut the hair in my ears, and shaved my sideburns. One of the worst cuts I've had since arriving on island last year. Dan cut my hair and i felt like i was getting smacked around each time he wanted me to tilt my head or turn left or right. Most people gently turn or tilt your head, he smacks you in the direction he wants you to turn. The haircut took about 5 minutes and meets military standards if you're in basic training. Welp been here a few time and have had a decent cut, this draws the line though....go to g's... first off this "establishment" only takes cash...kinda sketchy in my eyes but whatever, the interior of this place is kind of old and ran down and dingy, the floor was covered in hair for quite a long time until one of the workers finally swept it. Also there are no trash cans, one of the barbers had a cardboard box that had a trash bag tied into it under his wash sink. The main kicker was the haircut, the barber was slow (I get it if he is being a perfectionist) but in the end he only showed me half of my head. When I got home that's where it went downhill wife saw this "haircut" that looks like hellen Keller did herself.... take my advice go somewhere else or get a barracks cut.... read more

The team at Mike's has one of the most professional, attention to detail orientated group of barbers I have had the pleasure of being lined up by. I usually get the full service cut with safety razor, a straight razor shave, and finish it all off with a five or 6 step facial. First cut was great. The barber listened and gave me a cut exactly like I asked. Wish I could remember her name. The second time, was opposite. The man asked what I wanted but then proceeded to go rogue haha. In the end, it's just hair and it grows back, but you go to thr barber shop expecting to get what you ask for; afterall, you are paying for a service. if I go back, I'll be sure to avoid the guy that gave me the last cut. This is a shop where first come first serve, but I'll probably give it one more chance and see if I can ask specifically for a barber, rather than just get whoever's free next. I love Superbowl Sunday, but am not that much into football. On Superbowl Sunday you have the whole island to yourself. Today, I decided to go to Mike's Barbershop as there is normally an out the door line every Sunday. Today...crickets! Since I was feeling indulgent I opted for a straight razor shave in addition to my haircut. Barbress Thu was happy that someone walked in the door. Let me explain the straight razor shave experience. First, you get put into full recline mode on the olde thyme barber chair. Next, you get a hot towel on your face which opens all your pores. Then, you get warm shaving foam from some magical machine slathered on your face. Then, scraaaape...scraaape...scraaape! The straight edge razor was handled beautifully by Thu. This is like a facial for men. More warm shaving foam repeat with razor. I think I fell asleep somewhere at this point, but I remember another hot towel put on my face, and various creams that smelt of vanilla and tonics patted on my face. I also remember a luxurious face massage in there somewhere in my opioid state. After I was resuscitated, my cheeks were a smooth as a baby's butt! I'm not sure if Thu always does this good of a job, or because business was slow and she wanted to show her craft. One of the best barber experiences I've had since sweeping my Grandfather's barbershop when I was 11 in exchange for a haircut. Shave and a haircut...10 cents! TL;DR - Pros: Fast service and decent enough haircut. Cons: Impersonal service, dirty facility, and lack of attention to detail (not cleaning up hair after cut was finished, not showing back of head after cut, no gel used or offered, etc etc) Just got my haircut here for the very first time... If you want a decent haircut this may be the place for you...if you want anything more than that I recommend you look elsewhere. I will likely be back as A) I'm inclined to offer second chances and B) there don't seem to be many barbershop options in the Kailua area; however, this would not be my first choice by any means and it didn't take long to come to this conclusion. I am accustomed to developing a friendly relationship with whoever cuts my hair...with that being said, this is certainly not the place to meet those expectations. I saw another review that said something similar, but the bottom line is that this place functions as a turn and burn operation a la your local post or base exchange. Seemingly, their primary focus is to get you out the door as quick as possible while providing an acceptable haircut. If anyone has a better recommendation for a place in Kailua I'm certainly open to it, but my search for a new "haircut home" will continue for now. read more

I just stopped into Mike's while I was out running errands and he'll I'm overdue for a haircut anyhow. Mistake 1. Mistake 2 believing the person cutting by hair knew what they were doing. Mistake 3 not speaking up as they went shorter and shorter than the agreed length to cover up the mistakes they were making with a scissor cut and fade. It's not like I was asking for a fancy cut. I wanted basic and what I left with was disappointment. I'll try G's next time. I'd rather wait in line than deal with the service and quality at Mike's. read more

If you are military, you get a super low "special" price; if you are not military, you pay too much. Fine, I can accept that I am subsidizing hair cuts for our troops. But could you at least massage my scalp and neck a little more ? Wear some Hello Kitty? That would take the edge off your not speaking English, giving me a mediocre haircut, not trimming far enough down the back of my neck, not checking my eyebrows and ears, and charging me too much for it. Great place if you want kids cut but beware this is a very popular place and not all the barbers cut the same. We typically go here for my boys and they usually do a great job with a clean side part cut. They are also known for their "lines" with their cuts so on the weekends this place gets really busy- especially with the one lady in the first seat! Everyone is waiting for her. read more

I have been getting my haircut here for about 18 years. Service is fast, friendly, and Hien or Trang cut my hair exactly the way I want it. Nothing fancy mind you (#3 on the sides, layer the top, sideburns half way, block the back, trim eyebrows, no shave, no mirror). I rarely spend more than 5-10 minutes waiting (no appointment, and request either one of 2 stylists), and about 15 minutes in the chair. 1/2 hour in and out, look great, very reasonably priced. There is nothing more I am looking for in a barber. Probably not the place if you want a perm, or color, but for a straight up haircut, I highly recommend Mike's. They are always busy, but have it dialed. read more

I just gave this place 4-stars, but only for people like me--that want a non-chain barber that cuts hair without much fuss or cost. I have been here about three times and each time got a good haircut. But to be honest, I care more about the price (with tax 13 and change) more than having that perfect style. What I really like about this place is that it is family owned. The people who run the shop must have been originally from SE Asia--they yammer away in some odd language, and there must be three generations working there. In my opinion they are professional and friendly. If I have the choice of supporting a hard working family doing the right thing (good quality and low cost) versus some super chain (talking to you Supercuts) I chose Mike's. Or if you like razor cuts with bowl bangs on your son then okay, go... the best thing I noticed was at least the bangs were straight. My only words to the woman was "trim the length, don't go short and clean up the layers." what we got was high and tight with bangs! Worst place to go!! Cannot do fades or tapers. DO NOT RECOMMEND. Military haircuts are not $10. HIDDEN FEES!! I told the lady at the front that my cut does not look like a low skin fade and she put me with another barber and corrected me when my wife heard me ask for a low skin fade. Do not go there! The haircut they gave my 16 year old son turned him looking like the character in the movie "No Country for Old Men". They are all about getting your cash and getting the next victim in the chair. You will have to fight the owner "Tran" for a refund. She tried to tell me that because she uses a buzzer, it cost her electricity so she coudn't give me back my money. Then she says she doesn't make much money from the haircuts even though her establishment only accepts CASH. Never again will I deal with someone so unprofessional. read more

They gave me a good military haircut in spite of the fact that the woman made no effort to keep hair off of me when she took off the cape afterward. That's where the goodness stopped. I also asked for a face and neck shave. They started out with the hot towel and proper prep and began shaving me with a straight razor. Then they switched to a cheap dollar disposable razor. The woman was shaving me quickly and pressing too hard. She went over the same places multiple times to try to get all the hair off because the disposable razor she was using was cheap and not doing a good job. As a result, I got a poor shave. She cute up my face and neck. Ten minutes after I walked out my face and neck were red and already badly razor burned and stinging. I was so frustrated that I went back in to ask them what kind of razor they used on me. I complained and asked why they were using bad, cheap disposable razors. At that point the head woman began raising her voice at me and pointing her finger in my face telling me that I was hard to shave and that the razors were not bad razors. I asked her to stop yelling at me and to take her finger out of my face. I told her that I did not appreciate her treating her customers this way and she just continued to yell at me. When I became upset and yelled back at her she kicked me out. Never have I received such rudeness. Never have I been yelled at and had a finger shoved in my face, and that was all after the worst shave of my life. Why they use cheap, disposable razors when I am paying $13 for a straight shave is beyond me. On top of that, the woman obviously did not know what she was doing because she shaved too fast, pressed harder and harder and kept just scraping in various directions over the same spot. I would recommend you stay far away from this place.Read the other reviews here and you will see that others have been treated with disregard for detail and have been bullied. Nothing upsets me more than businesses treating their customers this way and I will not cease to tell everyone I can to stay away from this place. read more

Horrible experience. Barley spoke English and Saw the military haircut sign so I figured they knew what they were doing. I asked for a simple medium fade. Started off as a medium and ended with a raging high and tight looking thing. When asked if they could fix the other side (no fade at all) they said nothing was wrong. Pretty sure I get my hair cut all the fucking time and know what a fade looks like. Wouldn't recommend it to you fellas unless you want a Moto cut. read more
