General Contractor and Trex Pro Mike Schmidlin and his team, Moises, Pimi, Kevin, and Luis transformed our old sagging redwood deck and rebuilt it with a much-improved support structure, Trex boards, and to-code Trex railings. When we asked if they could also build a storage shed, Mike looked at photo of a cedar shed we found online and replicated it. We got a bid on Friday, and the crew started on Monday. They finished both projects in less than a month. They went the extra mile to replace some Section 1 termite damage on our rafter ends and fascia and also painted the finished work. The crew showed up at 8 a.m. every day, rain or shine, and worked until 4 p.m. This has NOT been our typical experience with contractors! The crew was hard working, respectful, friendly, and very customer-service oriented. When asked, they added a solar light to our shed, replaced a sagging board on another deck, and modified the stair railing. We moved into our house in Emerald Hills about a year ago, and knew that one of the things we wanted to do was to replace our Patio Deck. It was falling apart (the wood had eroded significantly), but fortunately the structure was still good. I recall our real-estate agent mentioned Trex to us when we were doing the inspections, so decided to look into it more. Fortunately Trex had the TrexPro program and we asked a few folks to come over for a quote. Mike was one of the many that showed up but we immediately hit it off with him - we felt that he really took pride in his work, and had a clear vision of what needed to be done - we ended up replacing both the decking materials as well as the rails - we went with Island Mist and Feeney Cable rails. We were not sure which color to pick, so Mike sent us to a local lumber yard to check out the samples in a larger format - to our pleasant surprise, everyone in the lumber yard also highly recommended Mike - "you're in good hands with Mike" Leading up to the work starting, Mike stopped over a few times to take measurements, and refine his plan (it's rare to see contractors do so much prep work). Once the work started, things were rolling pretty quick (probably as a result of the pre-planning that Mike did) - however, due to the settling of the foundation piers, Mike and his team really had to put the work in to level it as much as possible, which was not evident before the old deck was torn out. Mike even went above and beyond to repair a portion of the structure that eroded through water damage/termites at minimal cost. All-in-all, it didn't add much time at all to the project. Everything was finished within 2 weeks, and everything looked amazing! However, here is where things started to go south a bit for us. Someone from the City showed up (a week after Mike finished) and let us know that we were supposed to get a permit for the project (we all thought that you didn't need one to repair an existing structure where we didn't do any structural changes) - in any case they wanted to tack on a huge fine if we didn't submit an application for a permit in retrospect. I contacted Mike, and he went out of his way to spend significant time with the City to obtain the permits and get the City off our backs. Thanks again Mike for doing this! This really shows that Mike not only cares for his work, but for his customers as well. We have thrown a few parties, and everyone - guests, neighbors, co-workers are all super-impressed with how nice the deck looks now. read more

We hired Mike and his crew to do a large Trex deck in the Santa Cruz mountains, about 1200 square feet. They did a fantastic job, and exceeded expectations in many ways. We've had many contractors doing work at our home, but this team was the best we've ever had. Details: 1. Mike is a certified Trex installer, and is clearly an expert in building decks. His team created an incredibly solid foundation. They didn't try to re-use existing (deteriorating) concrete footings from the old deck - instead, new footings were poured in holes dug much deeper than the existing footings. The pressure-treated frame was reinforced where needed with metal brackets and extra boards, resulting in a deck with absolutely no movement, and super-strong railings. 2. We have a steep driveway, and rather than risk anything or have the (slippery) Trex slide off the delivery truck, the material was unloaded at the top and carried down the 100' driveway as needed. This was a lot of extra work for the team, but it didn't seem to bother them and we heard no complaints. 3. The team started the job when promised, and showed up on every consecutive day (including weekends), even when it was raining. They worked full days, with only a short lunch break. They don't try to juggle multiple simultaneous jobs. 4. Mike is great at soliciting input from the client and making sure they are happy. We had a few places where some creativity was required to deal with not-quite-square walls and interfacing with an existing slightly-askew concrete pad. Mike came up with solutions for these challenges that look great. He also built some stairs to connect the deck to an existing flagstone path, and built a "access hatch" in the deck so we can easily get to some irrigation controls. 5. The team clearly cares about what they are doing and has pride in their workmanship. They take their time and do things right. Sometimes, a single board would be trimmed several times to get it to fit perfectly. Also, every member of the team was very courteous to us and did what they could to minimize disruption to our lives. 6. Considering the quality of the work done, Mike's prices are fair and were in line with what Trex and others estimate a deck should cost. Mike even reduced our final payment without any hassle because we didn't use the amount of railing originally estimated. And he left us with some extra Trex in case we ever have to patch an area, since the color we chose may be discontinued. All in all, it was a great experience and we would definitely hire Mike again! read more

Mike and his crew just completed a multi-part deck project for us. It included five separate decks, three of them with steps, an access hatch, some odd angles to fit around an existing hot tub, and a moveable section for hot tub maintenance access. As someone with very high (OK, picky) standards, who does 90% of the construction projects on my own house, it's often a challenge to find a contractor who will work to my expectations. I needed to replace an old rotten rear deck and decided to go with a TREX product. Mike was one of the lower bidders out of five. He came to our house and explained the product and provided a clear and detailed bid. He also had a portapotty delivered on the first day so as not to come in my house. With his crew the demolition of the old deck was accomplished in three days and was removed on the fourth. The next week foundations were dug and he called in for an inspection before building the deck flooring. My husband and I needed to have a 20 year old wood deck replaced. We got a few bids and decided to go with Mike Schmidlin. We liked the fact that he is the "Trex representative" in our area and he is a general contractor with years of new home building and remodeling experience. Mike and his crew demolished our old deck and noticed that our deck support system was not up to par. He added additional support piers and went above and beyond by putting new 4 X 4's in next to a very old and ivy covered fence that needed additional support. It would have been impossible to add these later (without destroying our new deck). We had a gas shut off valve and a sewer clean out pipe that was going to be covered by the new deck. Mike designed the deck so as to make sure those areas were accessible if that becomes necessary. He has a "Macgyver" ability to solve difficult building issues that we did not find in other contractors. Mike also added low voltage lighting to the steps that come on at dusk and off a dawn. The lighting was essential as this is the entrance to the cottage and could easily have been a safety issue. Mike and his team showed up early and worked a full day.
