Chris and his crew completely redid our landscaping (front and back yard) a year ago. After 10 years of neglect since we moved in, it looked like a crime scene in our backyard: a mess of weeds & ivy, crab grass, unkempt trees & bushes, rusty overhangs, gaudy hardscaping... we were that backyard the neighbors talked about. We wanted to live in our backyard and decided for a 100% renovation, complete with new pergolas and sitting areas, hardscaping, and landscaping. We liked Chris the moment we interviewed him. He was transparent about pricing and we felt we could trust him implicitly. He and his crew did not disappoint: Over the 3 months they worked with us they exceeded our expectations. Chris and his crew embodied competency, professionalism and integrity from the get-go. We were happy with the design they provided us based on what we wanted and gave options on how to make things cost effective while not compromising on design and functionality. As he started work, Chris met all our neighbors to make sure they knew the crew and to address any concerns they could have. He developed a friendly, respectful relationship with the folks on the court and always left the court cleaner than he started each day. We had 3 young kids (5, 3, 3) and they were always so kind to them and our family. We all enjoyed getting to know the workers and helpers. They worked diligently for us for 3 months, even through some torrential rains and the arrival of a new baby (!) We also appreciated their flexibility and adaptability; they were willing to add on scope and changes to the design such as putting in a new pergola even when it required some re-work on their end. I always trusted Chris and relied on him to give me his honest opinion on any decisions we made and that he had our best interest in mind; I never felt they were trying to push unnecessary services or improvements. In fact, when they accidentally broke something (as will happen in a major construction project, whether a hummingbird feeder or our lemon tree), they immediately replaced or fixed the issue without cost to us. They only work with well qualified people and I was impressed with the electrician and tree expert they brought in. In the end, costs were within the original budget and we were so happy with their work and professionalism that we gave them a bonus. Their pride in their work is evident. They are one of many contractors named by the district as experienced with their guidelines on landscape conversion and irrigation but the only one I met that gave me the confidence from the get go that it will be a successful project. Marc, Chris and the team are very knowledgeable on everything related with Landscaping but their big differentiator is their unique type of service that's 100% centered in the customer experience. Starting with continuous communications and their flexibility in dealing with changes and unknowns but also going all the way to ensure that as their customer I was happy with their job and how everything looked. Not sure if you can find other contractors like them, they are really unique in this business. Marc did all the required paperwork for my landscape conversion project and helped with the plant selection and the planting plan. I spent around 18 months off and on looking for someone to work with on my house landscaping project. I wanted to go drought tolerant in the front and wanted someone knowledgeable in local flora that would thrive in low water conditions. I contacted many other companies. They either required a design or required me to pick out plants. I also talked to many landscape designers, some contacted through the city of Santa Clara website listing drought tolerant specialists. I did not speak with a single designer that I felt was knowledgeable in all the components of a drought tolerant landscape: plant species and color, plant placement and irrigation. Finally I found Marc and Chris. Marc's company is unique in that it is a family operation in which he works on the design and his brother is the foreman and in charge of implementation. Marc is also very knowledgeable in drought tolerant plants and irrigation requirements. Our project: Front yard: Replace concrete drive and walkway with pavers. Drought tolerant planting and irrigation. Fence (custom built) Back yard: Grass reduction Planter Box Tree and Shrubs planting and planning Fence and gate (custom built) Chris and his team could probably build anything you can dream up. I am super excited to see how the new planting develops over the next few years. I appreciated that they use Netafim, which is a California company building agriculture grade drip irrigation for residential use. I light of the ongoing drought, I decided to be a cognizant citizen and stopped watering my yard for the past 4-5 years. Basically I let the grass die and although in winter, scrub grass along with clover shaped weeds would sprout, and from a distance, it still looked like there was a lawn. Finally, I decided that it was time to upgrade to drought resistant landscaping. I emailed Marc at Core Landscaping and he informed me that they were booked out for about 8 weeks. I wasn't in a hurry so a few months later, I emailed again to set up an initial site visit. Chris came out at the appointed time and we went over what I envisioned, and he took some measurements. They penciled my job in for about 6 weeks down the road, and in the interim, Marc emailed me an proposal and estimate. Marc was very prompt in replying and communication was great. Finally, Marc emailed me that they would be able to start the job, within a week of their original estimated window to finish the previous job. The crew at Core Landscaping worked diligently and efficiently, even during a moderate rainy storm on one day in particular. Chris and/or Marc were present about 25% of the time to supervise and were available when I had the chance to come home during the work day. Clean up was detailed and effective each day. About midway through the project, I decided to upgrade to add some berms and boulders, and Marc made that transition effortless. The final result exceeded my expectations, and they were able to finish only one day later than their original estimate. We have already received a number of compliments from neighbors and random people walking by. Since the end of the project, I have emailed Marc twice to ask for minor touch ups and he immediately sent out a crew both times at no extra charge to take care of my requests. I had an excellent experience with Core Landscaping and I would unequivocally give them my highest recommendation to anyone in search of help to upgrade their landscaping. read more

Good: Marc and his team is easy to work with. They listen to what you have to say. All his people are very friendly, professional and come across as nice people (and clean). Out of 4-5 quotes had we had received for the work, their quote was right in the middle. We picked them because of reviews on yelp and because they seemed knowledgeable and trustworthy. They were good with communicating over phone and emails, which helped us go with them. They also offered good ideas with overall design before we picked them. Bad: If this rating was just based people-skills of all the people on Core team, I would give them 5 stars. When quality of work and actual achievements taken into consideration, my rating goes down to 2 stars. Our project cost was increased by 40% - and that too with actual reduction in the scope. Some of the hardscaping work is doing beautifully while some parts falling apart after a short period of time. Towards end of whole extended project, we were told that some of the hardscaping choices that we had made were not correct, and the frustrating part is that we had only chosen from the options given by them. Plant installation went smoother compared to other work but few months fast forward - many of the plants are dead. My suspension is that when the project went over time, they cut corners with soil preparation and irrigation system. I won't be using them again for our future projects. read more

I was looking for someone to help convert my front/backyard into something more drought tolerant, and found Marc & his team. They did a fantastic job, with probably very little direction from me - I had some visuals and a rough idea of what I wanted an a smaller sized property, but I am certainly not a designer! The reasons why I picked Core: - Marc answered my emails and phone calls. I got tired chasing after some of the other bidders, and decided I didn't want to chase them to finish my project after I signed the contract. - Marc seemed ok with the fact that I didn't already have a designer hired/plan produced - Some of the other contractors simply had a price minimum I couldn't hit without hardscaping or extensive waterworks, which was definitely not something I wanted. - Marc and his team were able to start and complete within a reasonable time and that was reflected in the contract. All in all, I'm very happy with the work they did. It's been pouring this week and all the plants seem to have held up well and everything looks good. We found Core through Yelp after two contractors bid way over what we could afford and another just stopped returning our phone calls/emails. Marc was super professional from the get-go, but also really relaxed and easy-going and took the proposal from the third contractor (because it was within our price range), adjusted it for his team, and got right to work. Literally, within days of contacting Core via email, Josh was hard at work in our backyard. It wasn't a huge project and was done in about 7 working days and we are THRILLED with the outcome. Core cleared out our existing concrete patio, leveled the yard, lay a gorgeous paver patio, built two lovely raised beds for veggies, put in some hearty plants that should withstand our Labrador's torture, and ran drip irrigation throughout the whole yard. Core Landscaping just completed a major drainage project on my home and they did an outstanding job. They installed sump pumps, rainwater collection systems, drainage from the house and garage to the street which involved ripping up and repaving part of the asphalt driveway, gutters on the garage, and also took care of all the wiring. I'm very happy to say that the guys from Core exceeded all of my expectations, They were professional, considerate, efficient, reasonably priced, and above all - a real pleasure to work with. I am already planning to have them back to do the front and back yard landscaping. I left Marc a voicemail on a Saturday and promptly received a call back on Monday (they are closed on weekends). He set up a time around my schedule to come by to give an estimate for landscaping and drainage, and was right on time. The drainage portion was more complex than we anticipated, but Marc consulted with his foremen Chris and Josh (both experienced home builders) and Chris came out to take measurements and assess the scope of work. The estimate was thorough and reasonable. The nerd in me appreciated the PDF format estimates and invoices, and ease of communication via text messages and email. Chris and Josh spent extra time researching parts and prices and saved me a serious amount of money by shopping around. I had suggested a rainwater collection system as part of the project, and Chris stopped by a hydroponic supply store to do some research. He helped me save $300+ on the rainwater system alone and even ordered parts that were color matched to my house (a detail that I hadn't even thought of). When it came time to start work, the guys really shined. I was told that they would start work at 8am - and looked out the window to see them arriving at 7:49am. Every single day of the job, they were on time or early. Their work ethic is second to none - whenever I dropped by the house, there was always someone working. I've seen many other companies where everyone disappears for lunch, but not these guys. When I asked why, they explained that #1 tool rental costs money and they want to make the best use of the time, #2 they wouldn't want to have to put away all of their tools since that eats into useful work time, and #3 they want to be efficient and get the job done. It rained in the middle of the project and Chris and Laurence came to the house on a Saturday to make up for the lost time, even though they were supposed to have the weekend off. They were very considerate and took care to keep the job site (aka my home) clean. Josh offered to knock on the neighbours' doors to let them know that they would be doing work on the house since I hadn't been able to talk to my neighbours before work started. Every day all the tools were put away and the driveway was tidied up so that I had somewhere to park my car. I even saw Sean one day compacting the yard waste I had haphazardly stuffed into a bin that was spilling out (thank you!). I could go on with my novel, but the bottom line is that the crew at Core Landscaping is top notch and I feel very lucky to have had them work on my home. They did an incredible job given a short amount of time, and Marc checked in with me several times after project completion to make sure there were no loose ends or details I was dissatisfied with. The selfish part of me wants to keep these guys a secret so their business doesn't blow up with the yelp effect, but at the same time.. they really deserved a 5-star review. read more

Like most people who pay for contractors to do work, we expect good quality. We are reasonable and willing to compromise when problems arise. We've worked with many contractors without problems like this. I don't think anyone would just put up with what we went through. None of these problems would have come up if they had focused on our job. The designer came up with a good plan. The fact we were able to read the plans and point out to them when things were wrong tells you they are just trying to make excuses. Never once did they apologize for all the delay. We were quite reasonable when they communicated. Told them not to work in the rain but Chris insisted. You can't blame weather and holidays on the delay. We wrote this review because we selected them based on all the great reviews written that didn't reflect our experience. We had a total of 3 change orders. 1) On Chris' suggestion we modified the pathway border to have the border pavers positioned laterally as opposed to vertically. It looked much better but increased the number of pavers needed and the labor to cut them. Took an extra 2 days of 1 to 2 people. We paid over 2k for this change. 2) We changed the stepping stones to dual 16x16 steps from a single path of 24x24 pavers. Cost an extra 2 grand. They added a few flats of ground cover plants between the steps along with irrigation when we got upset about the extra price over the original walkway plans before we went with stepping stones. 3) After the crew removed some overgrown fern plants around the redwood tree it looked really bad. The solution was to add soil to make it look more sloping instead of the drop off that resulted. We told Chis we would take care of it because we didn't want to be billed another $1000. Chris assured us dirt was cheap but then we got the bill for $840 to install 3 yards of dirt. The bill was $360 for 3 yards of dirt and 8 hours of labor at 60/hour. You can buy 3 bags of soil for $30 to equal 1 yard. His soil was special and therefore costs $90 more per yard! He said he had to replant some plants and redo the irrigation. However, we have pictures before and after showing the plants weren't raised. Plus, the irrigation was just covered with dirt and not removed and reinstalled. We installed another 3 yards after. Took me less than 2 hours and it included the time driving to buy the dirt at a cost of $75. They ended up not charging for this but there were several expensive plants they didn't plant so it was a wash. To say the job took so long because of all the constant change orders is not accurate. The truth is they were trying to manage multiple jobs with a small crew. I did tell Marc not to rush the project through. Get it done but get it done right. This is before I learned they were starting another job. When Chris admitted this is when my wife blew up at him. They weren't anywhere close to finishing our project (right after Thanksgiving) and it took them over 6 wks to finish after that. They would show up at our house in the AM and then leave around 10 to the other site. They might leave one person behind to work on our project. We live on the end of a cul de sac and our retired neighbors gave us a progress update daily. Plus, we took photos of the progress regularly so it would be difficult to explain lack of progress if they were in fact at our site working. I'm sure it was a bigger job and thus they prioritized over ours. Funny how he attacks me but not the photos and the quality of the work. Wouldn't have wrote the review if the quality of the work was good. The extra time was not the biggest issue. I shouldn't have paid him the last check. Didn't want to pay until everything was done since their track record of showing up wasn't great. So, I didn't pay him the last check until he completed all the loose ends. I had them replace all the pavers they cracked during installation, etc. This past weekend I discovered another bad quality item I would have made them fix had I noticed it before. I uploaded a photo of the irrigation wire harness he installed to connect the timer to the valves. It should have been routed in the attic above the garage but he just ran it on the outside of the dry wall along the wall and then up through a hole I cut out for the drainage cleanout of a sink I was planning to install in the garage. He didn't even fasten it to anything. Even the subcontractor who installed the low voltage wiring had fished the wire up behind the drywall and up to the garage attic over to the back corner of the garage and then down behind the drywall to the timer. Even left a nice dirty hand print on the drywall. So much for pride in workmanship.... It's unfortunate if our adult son visiting for xmas was disrespectful. I'm sure he was tired of hearing us vent about the job not getting done. No excuse for that behavior. His version of the story is much different but there is no excuse if one of the crew felt disrespected. We apologize for that. read more

A little over two years ago, my then fiancee now wife and I decided to have our wedding ceremony in our front yard with the reception in the back yard. While other landscape companies sent out sales reps to bid on the job, offered generic plans or shook their heads at our ideas - Core Landscaping sent out the boss and his foreman to have a look and presented original and thoughtful ideas. My husband's wish came true!! An edible garden has been created with the expertise of Core Landscaping. We have had a wonderful experience with Marc, Laurence and the Core Landscaping staff. We were able to continuously work with Marc presenting him with our plant and fruit tree ideas/wishes. He gave us time to research and decide about what we wanted. If plants weren't always available Marc made a point to check out other nurseries. The planting happened in a timely fashion & the landscapers went quietly about their work, leaving things very tidy at the end of each workday. Everyone cared to listen and be pleasing. The Core team did a great job for us with a multi-faceted backyard remodel. We needed planter boxes, planting, a lawn area, a fire pit, a fountain, seating, irrigation, and pavers! The Core team could do it all in addition to producing a visual design plan that summarized everything we wanted (and within our budget). We had a few designers draw up some plans for us that were nice but weren't very functional for us as a family wanting to spend time in our backyard. Because these designers had little connection with the installation process, their designs were well beyond our budget and feasibility. What I liked about Core Landscaping is that it is a small enough company that they all are involved and communicate about projects, but also large enough to get the job done well and in a timely manner. I also liked how they take the environment into consideration. Chris installed netafim drip irrigation and very efficient sprinkler heads in the lawn; which lowered our water bill. Marc chose plants that are drought tolerant and low-maintenance. Speaking of maintenance, they do that for us, too! We love the space that they built for us and maintain for us! Core landscaping just finished our backyard/patio project. I couldn't be happier with the end result. We have a smaller outdoor space behind our townhouse, and they transformed it into a backyard/patio where we want to spend all of our time. I mainly worked with Marc, but John is great too. They both really know what they're doing, and also really listen to what you want. You can tell that they really care about their clients being happy with their work. Thank you, Marc and your team! I recently hired Core Landscaping to purchase and install new trees, plants and masonry and all new irrigation in my backyard, and we are SO pleased with their work. He took the time to also teach me so that I could take care of the garden on my own. Plant Installation: Marc sourced our trees, plants, soil and compost tea at a competitive price and great quality. They helped me build my raised vegetable bed and filled it with amazing organic materials. The mulch and placement of the entire backyard made it look very professional and well kept. Irrigation: Marc and his team replaced the entire perimeter irrigation system with new tubing to ensure all plants (new & old) had a working water source on the timer system. He even helped repair sprinkler system damaged by another contractor, and came back to check it. Masonry: I had another contractor lay flagstone pavers and I wasn't entirely happy with the way it turned out. Marc helped me cut back the pavers and suggested using an alternative of "gator dust" which he and his crew then installed, and we LOVE it. He rescued the project. Marc was personable, professional and very easy to work with. Core Landscaping will be doing my entire front yard in the spring! read more
