I just completed a job with Landscape Solutions in Los Gatos and wanted to share my experience with anyone who might be looking for a landscape company. Our project was a small yard with a combination of hard surface and the installation of artificial turf for our dogs. I was surprised how good it looks and the dogs seem to enjoy it as much as real grass. I interviewed a few companies and chose Landscape Solutions based on how easy they were to talk to and how transparent they were with their process including design and billing. The entire job went very smoothly. I changed a few things after we started, and they were upfront about how that would impact the time to completion and the cost. In both cases their estimates were accurate. Their pricing was competitive and given the quality of the finish product and the ease of working with them I found it to be very reasonable. The guys they had doing the work were very professional, polite, and easy to work with. They cleaned up after each days work and returned the next morning right on time. I appreciated that they were very respectful of my time and my home. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience and I have already recommended them to a friend who may need work done in the future. I called Landscape Solutions for help reforming my out of control, weed infested, small outdoor space. I live in a manufactured home park, but it is expected that we keep our spaces tidy and tasteful. Scott, Norka and the men on their team came in, cleaned up and created a peaceful, relaxing space for enjoying the outdoors and cozy gatherings. The clean up involved lots of weeding and removing dead shrubs and plants that weren't thriving. They pulled up artificial turf that had sprouted so many weeds it could have been mowed. They replaced the turf with a lovely gold toned gravel, easy to walk on and maintain. I have terraced levels topped by a wall at the back, and they groomed the potacarpus and filled in with drought resistant Salvia. They removed old mulch, put down new weed cloth, and replaced the mulch. I couldn't be more pleased. The work was done well and Scott worked within my budget. Norka is an artist with a gift for visual balance and tasteful use of space. They cleaned up the work area and left everything tidy. It was a joy to see the transformation. In September 2024, I contracted with Scott C. McIntyre, the owner of Landscape Solutions to do landscaping work at my residence in Los Altos, Ca. The work consisted of replacing existing retaining walls and steps in my back yard and installing a new patio on an already flattened area on the hill in my back yard. Mr. McIntyre declared the work completed on November 4, 2024 although there remained issues with incomplete and substandard work and failure to adhere to rules imposed by the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB). I have filed a complaint with the CSLB. I am listing some of the complaints in this review. ISSUES WITH WORK QUALITY - NON-CODE COMPLIANT, SUBSTANDARD, NOT COMPLETE 1. The Guard Rail over the lower retaining wall is not building code compliant. The most serious issue with the work that Landscape Solutions did was that the guard rail built over a retaining wall does not meet building code and is not child safe. A picture of the guard rail is shown in this review. Code dictates the maximum gap in the guard rail is 4 inches. The distance from the surface of the patio to the first horizontal slat above is approximately 19 inches. A child could easily fall from the surface of the patio to the bottom level. I emailed a picture of the completed retaining wall and guard rail to my city's Building Code Enforcement Division and inquired if it was building code compliant. A Code Enforcement Division representative replied with an email message (Client can provide the actual email message.). Following text is from the email message sent by Code Enforcement: "The rail needs to be 42" high and there needs to be a maximum of 4" between the horizontal rails. The fence as shown does not meet the standards and intermediate rails need to be added." -----End of quote from email message sent by city's Code Enforcement Division------- NOTE: ALLOWING A CONTRACTOR WHO DOES NOT KNOW THE BUILDING CODES TO BE LICENSED PUTS THE PUBLIC IN DANGER. 2. Incomplete and substandard work i. There are areas with no pavers, just dirt, adjacent to the lower retaining wall. Contractor fixed some but not all areas along the newly built lower retaining wall. A picture shows an example where paving stones need to be installed next to the retaining wall. ii. Gate not installed in lower retaining wall. The retaining wall that was being replaced had a gate. I called this to Mr. McIntyre's attention in a reply message to his message that the project was complete. He replied in an email message that he would replace the gate. Client can provide the actual email message. iii. In doing the work, Landscape Solutions workers moved items (e.g., wooden glider bench, other patio benches, chairs, patio table, an umbrella stand) from the flattened hill area to other parts of the back yard. I requested that the items be returned to their original locations. Mr. McIntyre, in an email message, agreed to do so. Client can provide the actual email message. This was not done. Returning items moved to their original location should be a standard part of Landscape Solutions clean-up work upon completion of a project. ISSUES WITH NON-ADHERENCE TO CONTRACTORS STATE LICENSE BOARD REGULATIONS In items 3 and 4 below, quoted text is from Contractors State Licensing Board publication "Contracting for Success". 3. Contractor did not give buyer a copy of the signed contract as CSLB requires. "Before any work is started, the contractor must give the buyer a copy of the contract signed and dated by both the contractor and the buyer." 4. On the day work began, Contractor asked for payment of $15,000 along with the signed contract. "Except for a down payment, a contractor can't demand or accept payment for work or materials until the work is actually done or the materials are delivered. The down payment may not exceed $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract amount, whichever is less." Contractor gave following reason why he asked for $15000 at start of project. Quote is directly from an email message he sent client. Client can provide the actual email message. Text of email message from Mr. McIntyre, in quotes: "My son is out of state at college and it is very expensive. My cash flow and bank account funds do not allow me to pay for your materials before delivery and pay my payroll in advance of getting paid by you if this is what the CSLB requires." --------End of quote from email message sent by Mr. McIntyre-------------- 5. Contractor made additional changes not in contract without a change order being added to the contract. Contractor then billed client for the unauthorized work. The Contractors State Licensing Board publication "Terms of Agreement A Consumer Guide to Home Improvement Contracts" states the following: "Extra Work and Change Orders become part of the contract once the order is prepared in writing and signed by the parties prior to the commencement of any work covered by the new change order." read more

Needed to do plantings for our outdoor areas. Landscape Solutions did soil preparation, installed drip watering system, helped me with plant selection, bought plants and did the planting. Norka supervised the work crew and handled all the steps of the work. Scott acted in an advisory roll helping with plant selection and layouts of both the drip watering system and plants. I hired Scott and his team for removing concrete removal and leveling ground for an area of 600~700 sq. ft. The total weight of the concrete and dirt is about 3 ton. He assigned 2~4 men and finished the work in 2 days (for 6~7 hours each day). After the work was finished, he provided a detailed invoice of the time/cost calculation results. The crew is very friendly, polite, conscientious, and eager to please. My project was more about landscape repair, than design. Other landscapers were not excited about pulling weeds and cutting out weed-infested ground cover. Landscape Designs painstakingly got the weeds out, root and all, and managed to save existing landscaping. They cut back the roots of invasive ivy too. Two stars reason - for the attitude shown. The co-worker said the repair was easy. The owner "ssshed" him and still decided to charge me the original quoted high price. I saw this, guess the owner did not see or realize that I noticed it. I did not contest it, I mean whats the point trying to fighting such a battle you wont win. Just wanted to pay and get it over with, and left to law averages to take care. Otherwise these people know what they are doing, pretty good and also timely in work. We engaged Scot and his team for a pretty major backyard remodel early this year. It consisted of paving, deck work, drainage, sprinklers, lighting, regrading, new lawn, a retaining wall, tree cutting and new plants. In Scott's quotes, he clearly itemizes everything and provides you with a clear perspective on the options you are selecting, and considering. He also does a great job drawing up a plan, and explaining the pros and cons, and providing design ideas. As with all major projects there were a few items at the end which we wanted addressed, and this is where Scott stood out. He made sure all the work was completed to our satisfaction, and has even been super-responsive in the months after with various tweaks to sprinklers etc, things that only become obvious after the job has been completed. I'm pretty sure many other contractors would take the check and run after the job, but Scott has been great in helping make sure everything came together fine. If I ever need to do a big landscaping project again, I would give Scott a call. read more

I got less than what I paid for and do regret not paying more for my project. I interviewed about 6 contractors to renovate my backyard. Landscape Solutions came in with the best bid from a contractor that I could speak English with. They could also start right away (Maybe I should have taken this as a warning sign). They completely underestimated the time to complete the job (even though weather was surprisingly good, with only about 2 rain days). I went back and forth with them on many issues, and I ultimately ended up with a pretty low quality job. So why give this 2 stars, and not just 1? The manager was very pleasant to work with (even through all the disagreements), understood and accomodated my requests, and gave me a discount for one of the problems. His customer service was excellent and he comes across knowledgeable and I think he knows how to do the stuff properly himself. The problem is that his crew does not, and he has no quality control over his crew. I would recommend this company only to people who are very knowledgeable about how their project should be done, so you catch and correct all the mistakes before it's too late! read more

I just recently completed a landscape project with Scott/Landscape Solutions after finding him on Angie's List. The job was completed last week and I couldn't be happier with the results. Since it was a rental property, we didn't want to overspend so we gave Scott a budget to work within. He came out to give us an estimate, was on time, and provide the estimate the same day. His crew started the following week killing the lawn and doing the initial prep. Communication with Scott was excellent throughout the process and I felt he was very knowledgeable about plants and had a good understanding of my expectations (I'm not an easy person to please). Along the way, we added a few extras which did exceed our budget, but I felt the pricing was fair and the communication was great with Scott. The end result was that our back yard landscape project looks so great, our tenants are happy and it's added value to the home. Scott also provides a 1 year guarantee for the plants which is a huge benefit to ensure that they are planted corrected and selected correctly for the environment. I'm now waiting for a quote for the front yard and I'll have Scott and his crew tackle that job next. Great ideas, good communicaton, fair pricing, great service. The job at my home involved expanding a small irrigation line. Scott McIntyre responded to my phone message and was able to set an appointment the next week. I explained what I needed over the phone, but on the day of the appointment Scott himself showed up with his field manager, a field supervisor and two crew just so Scott could be sure he and the crew understood the scope of work. The crew did exactly what I asked and were finished in 2 hours. Landscape Solutions apparently usually does larger projects but can also do small jobs on an hourly basis. The crew was courteous and professional. I would hire this company again and recommend them to my friends. read more

I have not yet hired this company , but even with that I need to refute the other review. I have thoroughly investigated this company. As of 9/08/09 ,according to the California State Licensing board ,their insurance, bond,and license is current. I called several of his refrences and they have been quite pleased and found Scott to have excellent workers who cleaned up each day. The former clients I spoke to also found Scott to be easy to work with the whole way through and that he finished the job within budget. also I did not find Scott's bid to be low. In fact it came in a bit higher than another bid I had received. But because of his through knowledge of plants I may go with him anyway. Scott, the owner of this company, served as the primary contractor,designer and nurseryman for the Green Thumb Nursrey in Los Gatos from 1992-1998. He knows his plants. One suggestion he made was that I kill my current lawn with round-up before having a new lawn installed. Otherwise the roots that are now dormant, in my burmuda grass, will come back and destroy my new beautiful lawn next spring when the roots are no longer dormant, and my lawnis being watered on a regular basis. read more

I contacted Scott for a quote after reading Yelp and Angie's List reviews. He responded quickly and we set up a time for him to come out and look at our project and the design plans that we have. From the start he said that they were busy and it would be several months before the work could be done, we were OK with that. He came out, walked the project, took our plans and said that we would be hearing from someone in their company about the estimate the following week. That was 6 weeks ago and we've heard nothing. Sent an e-mail to check in and find out the status of the bid (I know they're busy and we just came off the holidays so I was giving the benefit of the doubt). No reply came. If this is how they deal with prospective clients I can't imagine what the communication and follow through would be like if we actually committed to paying them to do the work. read more

Scott and his crew did a fabulous job re-landscaping our back yard. It looks so beautiful that we added french doors so that we could enjoy it more from the inside. The work included removing two trees, demolishing concrete, laying new pavers and a seating wall, adding two gates, low voltage lighting and upgrading the irrigation system. And of course, planting, and this is where Scott really shines. He takes you on a nursery tour to select the plants and gives you a very detailed plant list and the planting plan. It is obvious that he knows and loves plants. He came personally to the job site and laid out all the plants and rocks--clearly he loves that part of the job. I initially called several landscapers and Scott was the only one who promptly and consistently returned calls and communicated. His bid was clear and detailed and we came in on budget except. The crew was on time and kept the job site neat. At the end of the job there were a couple of punchlist items that I saw, and as we walked the job Scott added a few more of his own accord, things I wouldn't necessarily have noticed. All were resolved by the end of the same day. Scott and his crew were flexible about accommodating the french door people, although it meant they had to come back 10 days later to finish the landing by the door. The only caveat I would offer is that if you are on a tight deadline be sure to communicate that to Scott. The time estimate for the job was three weeks, but it took longer. We were in no hurry and it's not the kind of inconvenience you have when your kitchen or bath is out of commission, but if we had had an outdoor event planned or other work scheduled, it would have become an issue. That said, I think that with the communication and project management skills Scott has, he and his team could have worked to deadline if needed. read more

After 20 years of remodeling, we've had a lot of experience dealing with contractors who fail to meet code so this will get resolved in an appropriate manner, not by shouting or threats to damage and lien private property. Not going to waste more energy on a dud contractor except that some of you have emailed wondering about the suspicious co-inky dates of the 5 stars. What can I say, I trust my smart yelpers to figure that one out on their own :-) 5 star reviews can refute opinions, can they refute goverment inspectors? Homeowners, it's up to you to decide. Is it worth a code violation cited in records and kept by the City of Palo Alto's Office of Planning and Development and in your permenant disclosures when you are trying to sell a home? We're not losing our house and unless you're my lender, there's no way anyone can ascertain that information unless it's filed with the county. Our friend is an attorney with the county so I'm confident she knows the advice she's giving. read more

We've used Scott and his crew twice and have been very satisfied with their work. The first project was a big backyard remodel that involved building and painting a large pergola with stonework and stepping stones, building a retaining wall and putting in a patio area off our living room. It was finished in a timely manner and Scott was extremely easy to work with and gave us a reasonable quote compared to two others. Last month, we asked Scott to fix our side gates, which were old and no longer closing correctly. Even though this is a busy time for him, he sent over a crew to rebuild the gates and install new hardware, which was done with no problem. I even thought of a couple extra projects for his crew do while they were here, and they responded by making things look better than I could have hoped. When one of the gates started to stick a few weeks later, he responded quickly to my call and we had the gate back in working order within a few days. read more
