My Wife had a design in mind along with some rough sketches and Don worked with her to understand the final product. He knocked this out in slightly over a day and his work exceeded expectations. He was prompt, courteous, cleaned everything up and delivered beyond what we thought we were going to end up with. Don is definitely one of those craftsmen that knows what he's doing. Don Carpenter and his crew just finished installation of a beautiful pergola in our backyard in Cupertino/Saratoga area. I have to say that without a doubt this is the best craftsmanship I have come across in terms of such woodwork when compared to other pergolas I have seen. His team was absolutely respectful to my wife and myself. I was surprised to see a negative comment below about mistreating women because that didn't seem like their nature. I HAD NO SUCH concern with my family. They were playful with our dog, were having fun during installation, talked with other paver folks working here. Someone may perceive Don to be a little curt or overly brief during text messages based on my experience regarding bracket installation questions. However, he had provided all the essential information via email (drawings, measurements etc) and I understand good contractors are generally busy for long phone calls etc. I have no problems with it especially since they were timely, had high quality and great team to work with. read more

Just stellar. As I sit on our new deck to write this, I am very grateful for Don and his team for this outstanding design and the superb craftsmanship. They transformed our non-usable tiny concrete steps into a front porch/deck that is a cozy and usable space for the whole family. I am a stickler for details and typically end up a bit disappointed with home improvement projects. If you read any of my other reviews, you'll see. This is one project that I am just thrilled with. It ended up even better than I imagined. The porch/deck is composite and natural wood combination that shields from rain and sun. The design was a tricky one with our space, but Don was up to the challenge and figured out an impressive design that held up perfectly during the build. I would give six stars if I could. Highly recommend these high end professionals for your outdoor project. I hope to build a back yard deck for a hot tub with them in the next few years. read more

After getting quotes from two other contractors, I saw the Yelp reviews for Carpenter Construction. My interest peaked when I saw photos of his past jobs, and I was intrigued. When I first met Don for the initial estimate, I felt that Don really knew his stuff. He was easy to talk to and listened to my wants. He made a few suggestions which I am glad he did. I decided right then that he is the one I wanted to hire. He is always ready to answer any concerns that I had. When we received his estimate, we were surprised that he was at least two grand less expensive. We both love our new deck, and are trying to figure out which project to have Don tackle next. Don and his crew did an amazing job on our new Timbertech deck with cable railings. Don is very professional and skilled, always prompt, gave us new ideas to work within our budget, and tried very hard to accommodate all our wishes. We originally had a landscape architect design our backyard and deck, but the budget was way over our heads. Don tweaked the deck design to make it have the same idea and feel, but for much less. He works along side his crew, is alway on time (or early!), and meets the deadlines. I always felt I could put my trust in his skill, and didn't feel a need to supervise. Don Carpenter did not finish the job. I asked for lattice skirt which he just forgot about. Then never promised to come back to finish. He also tried to finish a fence I asked him to build by attaching it to my neighbor's fence instead of putting the post in concrete. His workers were rude to me. I don't think they are used to working for women. If you're a woman stay clear. He is a jerk! read more

Don is way better and different from his competitors: - Fast response to yelp inquiry INCLUDING a rough estimate (only company out of 5 contacted that did that) - Flexible but fast to bid on the job - Submitted a quote with drawings three days after visiting - Quote was ~5% lower than the only other contractor that bothered to submit a bid, and included the deck design - Carpenter finished the removal of the old deck and built the footings in three days, then built an ~1000 sq ft deck with a ~200 sq ft covering in 5 days - Let me pay for the materials directly to help with financing the project, and was flexible on financing throughout - Very flexible with design changes and requests - Built a deck that is to code and will withstand significant weight for 30-40 years. I couldn't recommend Carpenter more strongly. read more

I just contracted with Carpenter Construction to build 2 pergolas and want to review the high-quality Trex deck and balcony they replaced for us last July. Carpenter Construction is the real deal. Their work quality was top-notch, the cost was as agreed-on, and the finished product was done as scheduled. Since the project entailed replacing an old redwood deck and balcony, Don Carpenter and his crew also replaced and retrofitted the structural components with pressure-treated material. Don Carpenter found innovative methods to retrofit the composite material with the existing structure. Being retired, I witnessed the complete project (demolition, material delivery, structure building, on-site cleanup) and was impressed with the high standards this 3-man crew adhered to. Another note: Don Carpenter is the owner/foreman and is on site, working with his crew daily. He also deserves recognition for being a straight-up, honest man.
