Local Mexican restaurant with self-service salsa bar and great wet burritos. Located right on Valley, this has been a long-standing spot for me to come to whenever I want a deluxe burrito with green enchilada sauce. The burritos are big and reasonably priced. They have rice and beans inside, and you have your choice of meat (ie carne asada, machacha, carnitas, etc). There are some vegetarian options as well, since they do have chile relleno. I noticed quite a few people get the seafood, and they have fried fish plates. If you eat in, you can help yourself to the chips and salsa bar. The chipotle salsa (mild spice) has a deep, smokey flavor and is unique to most other salsas you'd usually see, while the hot tomato salsa gives a nice heat. The pico de gallo is also a good option, and is mild. They have alcohol, and they do take credit card ($7 minimum). Bathrooms are available in the hallway by the salsa bar, and there's no free WiFi. They have a parking lot in the front and usually spots are open - if not, then it's usually a short wait for someone to pull out. read more

Found this spot using Yelp when in the area dropping someone off nearby. I can only speak on the tacos since that's all we had. I ordered the carne asada tacos and they were very good. Nice ratio of cilantro and onions, although I prefer the onions diced smaller. I believe each taco was only $2.50 and there was so much meat! My husband had the Al Pastor tacos, and although he said they were good, he felt he's had a better flavor other places. We visited during Covid-19, and I must say they do a phenomenal job with signage, distancing, outside seating, sanitizing, and they were very friendly and happy for our business. I doubt I will really ever be back in this area again, but if you are, they are worth a stop. In my childhood memories, there was a burritos that had the best flavor in town. It was the only place in my small East coast town. But ever since I moved to the Greater Los Angeles area, I can't remember a Mexican restaurant more impressionable than Mikasa. First, the name sounds a little bit Japanese, but let's not get hung up on that. It's their al pastor burritos, I get the 10-layer classico. Is it really 10 layers? The wrap is one layer and everything else seems blended together. But it's a large thicc mass of delicious food with red sauce on the outside, mmm. I'm not sure if I could say it's the freshest ingredients or the best meat, not that there's anything wrong with it. But really the highlight is the blend of those ingredients that makes it taste so seamless. Once I bite into it, I want to continue, and the ingredients seem to open up the taste as I go on. Yeah, honestly I've had better al pastor, but it wasn't in a better burrito. Back before Covid, there was unlimited help yourself servings of chips and salsa that perfectly rounded out the meal, but unfortunately now, takeout only includes a small serving. You could buy another small serving for a dollar. I also love that they have a good selection of frescas instead of a generic soda machine. The frescas probably have some real juice in it, but it tastes mostly like sugar water. I'm not sure if there's a little bit of pulp in it, I might have imagined it. Nevertheless, I prefer it over a soda. My only problem is that the location is kind of isolated and I'm just so lazy that I don't want to drive 10 minutes further. I usually love this place but my last experience has left me wanting to find a different Mexican go-to restaurant. I ordered the steak and eggs (in fact it is the only thing I ever order). The steak was the size of a deck of cards. WTF? I can usually put my eggs right on top of the steak and I still see the steak underneath. Not this time. I went to tell the waitress and she said "Thats what size it is supposed to be." Uhhh no. I'm going to look for another Mexican place cause the portions are getting smaller whilw the price has gone up. If you care about your health, please don't get your meals from here. I was looking forward to having some Mexican food with my family, so I went to go order some for takeout. They have signs all over indicating to stay 6-ft away and to wear a face mask, but as soon as I was waiting to order I noticed that the cook was not wearing a face mask or gloves. I understand it must get very hot cooking in a kitchen during the summer, but if everyone else has to wear a mask to protect each other, so should the cook who is preparing our food. Positive: Homemade tortilla chips are SO good. Crunch is solid and perfectly seasoned. Tastes really fresh. Honestly if I could rate the tortilla chips separately, I'd give it a five. Beverages were pretty good. Had Horchata and Agua Fresca de Pepino. Not too sweet but my friend thought it was sweet. This friend waters down their lemonade though. I take his opinion with a grain of salt. I guess it depends on you. Fast service. Negative: Friend had a carne asada burrito. I had the fish and shrimp taco. Felt like it was a much milder flavor. As if there was an ingredient missing or it need fat or lime... something was missing. It was a bland meal. Maybe the more popular dish taste better but I really do not recommend what we ate. I have not gone to Mikasa personally. I had the pleasure of trying some of their food outside a warehouse! I went to Frank and Sons collectible show on a Saturday at their warehouse in the City of Industry, CA. Mikasa had a little booth set up right outside the main entrance There were a couple of chairs & tables provided. They had a condiment bar with all the toppings needed for their tacos. I stopped by their booth twice during the day. The first time, I bought a Al Pastor soft taco and a Potato taco. The al pastor meat was soft and tender, and tasted really good with the tortilla. The Potato taco tasted awesome! The shell was tasty and crispy. Good chunk of potato inside the shell was yummy! The second visit, I bought another potato taco. Tried the Chicken Flauta also. It was really good too! To summarize: Al Pastor soft taco ($1.00) 4 stars Chicken Flauta ($2.00) 4 stars Potato Taco ($1.00) 5 stars Cannot wait to return to Frank & Sons so I can stop by this food booth again! Yummy food! I've been coming here since highschool (~10 years ago). Mikasa was the best and I still consider it one of the best Mexican restaurants in Walnut. When I walked in today, I noticed that they changed their menu. Everything was more expensive now and there wasn't many choices either. For example, they only offer the basic meats, no cabeza, lengua, tripa, etc. Another gripe was their raised prices and weird pricing. Why are all tacos $1.99 even shrimp & fish. All combinations are $7.99 so if you get the 2 taco combo (~$3.99) you'll be paying an additional $3.99 for some rice, beans and salad; drink not included. Wait, what? I ordered 3 carne asada tacos, 2 fish tacos and a shrimp cocktail. To be fair, their carne asada tacos did appear to be larger than other places charging less and the taste was okay. The fish tacos however were really disappointing. They were super breaded and thin. The breading made up about 30% of the thin fish filet and it was a panko type of breading, not good at all. Shrimp cocktail was alright. Shrimps were smaller than average, amount of shrimp also lacking, and for $10.99, not worth it. Their juice bar looks worth giving a try, but with all the cold-pressed juiceries coming out for the same price, juices here would be worth it for a convenience factor. Their chips & salsa bar and wide array of agua frescas however takes the real show here. They have many different salsas and condiments, all you can grab chips, and if you're lucky enough, all the roasted yellow peppers you want. Overall, the pros and cons make this place pretty average. I have been here twice. The first time, I ordered a bean and cheese burrito + pineapple agua. Both were good! Free chips and salsa were good as well. Second time, ordered a shrimp cocktail and jaiba tostada (picture included). I also tried the strawberry agua which was yummy! My fiancé ordered an asada burrito which he thought was pretty dry and the meat was chewy. The shrimp cocktail was a little thicker than other places but still good. The jaiba was really really lemony, so if you don't like it too sour then it's probably not a good choice for you. I like that they give you jaiba on a tostada + extra tostadas as well. My office is fairly close to Mikasa, and there are so many Mexican restaurants to choose from. But none of them satisfies my Mexican food cravings like Mikasa. They have huge portions, their salsa bar is fantastic, and their agua fresca station makes my day! I may not be Mexican, but I know my Mexican food...and Mikasa doesn't disappoint! Their tacos are quite good (al pastor and carnitas are my favorite), but street tacos in Puerto Vallarta are better (and cheaper!). But I guess if you don't want to fly down to Mexico, this would be acceptable. The burritos here are HUGE! The chimichangas with carne asada or carnitas is fantastic! The carne asada dinner plate is my new favorite thing to get here. Their Mikasa quesadilla is a really big quesadilla loaded with cheese and the meat of your choice. The Mikasa salad is their version of a taco salad...extremely satisfying, especially if you use the salsa as dressing. From the salsa bar, my favorite is the spicy red and spicy green salsas...and their grilled peppers! Paired with their fresh chips...this could be a meal all by itself! For drinks, they have the usual sodas, horchata, jamaica, etc...but I get excited when I walk in and see the green pepino drink churning in the row of juice machines. It's not too sweet, but it's really refreshing...and it's AYCD! Parking is difficult here, but well worth the challenge. I usually like to come on Tuesdays because other places nearby have $1 Taco Tuesdays (and people swarm for a good deal and mediocre tacos), which means Mikasa is not as busy...and parking is much easier! read more

Malena is amazing - she is the young woman who works in the restaurant and she is a gem!!! (I am not sure if I'm remembering her name right but she had long pigtails) I called around 10 am yesterday morning, needing to pick-up food for 12 people within an hour and she handled everything with grace. Everyone was impressed by the food. Our party had some vegetarian people so it was important that the beans were vegetarian - she said that they had two options - the refried beans which have lard/animal fat or the whole beans - we chose the whole beans which were vegetarian and so creamy and delicious!! They also made some vegetarian enchiladas with vegetables inside, not just cheese. The meat-eaters really liked the chicken quesadillas. They have a wide range of salsas that will satisfy everyone. They made recommendations after my second helping of that delicious orange salsa. They also suggested their avocado salsa which is even better. It was unavailable when I first walked in but all in the time that they apologized for running out, they handed me a fresh serving about mid-meal, made right on the spot and to my table. That's what most places won't do and that's why they deserve 5 stars. Overall Taste - Order the al pastor, it's made perfectly. Tried it clasico with rice, shredded lettuce, sour cream, topped with red sauce and a great helping of melted cheese with a serving easily made for 2. Ambiance - I can see large parties there. With large TV screens at every angle. The place has mostly booths and a family feel to it. The place is big but looks small on the outside. They are also the food stand outside of Frank and Sons which explains their collection of autographed menus from famous athletes mounted on the walls. We ordered some tacos and burrito. They have a very good price, reasonably cheap price but with a very generous portion especially for the price we paid for. So if you are like us that over order everything, be cautious. They also have free chips and the salsa bar that they have is amazing with many selection. SERVICE The team is friendly. They are not kidding when they say that the guacamole salsa is super hot. Like, HOLY GUACAMOLE, my sinuses are finally clear! The establishment is welcoming, the service is friendly, and the food is delicious. The tacos are bigger than I thought they would be (for $2) and filled with meat. The chips are warm and perfectly salted, with your choice of salsas to accompany them. I thought the bionicos would be in a small takeout box rather than a cup, but it was stuffed with fresh fruit and was adequately filling. This is the best Mexican food in the area! They make their own beans and rice which are great. Fresh chips and salsa. Everything I have tried was excellent, but be sure to try the flautas. You get beans and rice and two large pieces and a bunch of sour cream and guacamole. This is my standard go to meal. And the lady that works the counter is very friendly. The only downside which is minimal is their parking lot is really small, and because they are always so busy at lunch parking can be an issue. But don't let that keep you away! The flautas I got were 2 for $5.50 which I thought was a little high but then I opened the box and they were ENORMOUS. I got the beef and they were pretty good. I also tried the chile rellenos. These were also just ok, the breading was a little too egg-y for my taste. I am not a fan of potato tacos, but my co-workers seemed pleased with those. The part that did live up to the hype? The Salsa Bar. The orange salsa is unlike anything I have ever tasted at a Mexican restaurant. Its like a smokey chipotle salsa with a good spice and tons of flavor.
