I see some very mixed reviews on here, it didn't stop me from going in looking to purchase my first gun. I spoke with a salesman named Jake. I was looking for Either a Ruger LCP 2 .380 or the Ruger LCR .38 special. To be honest Jake seemed a little slow to help at first. After I was able to somewhat speak about what I wanted (I actually shoot a lot with my grandfather and did extensive research on what I wanted) and told Him I was buying today he warmed up. Now Jake spent about an hour with me answering a lot, A LOT of questions I had. Both to confirm what I already knew and some of what I didn't. He was helpful and professional. These are Firearms after all people. I had a budget he stuck to while showing me the two I was interested in and few below and above. I opted for the LCR revolver Here is what I REALLY liked, after I decided and did the paper work Jake showed me around to $1500+ pistols. Telling me about them and letting me handle them. Terrible business, like to accuse customers of things when they don't know the facts. Ignore customers based on race or treat them differently. Went in to buy ammo, accused me of trying to buy it for my wife and then refused to sell. Of course they would sell me a box of ammo I asked for directly but of my God how dare I ask my wife how many boxes of something else I should get. Of course they would sell me stock finish for a shotgun. The lady at the counter said she could care less if I made a purchase or not, claimed I was going to get them shut down by the ATF. What??? Over two boxes of 9mm ammo??? Why would I risk my FOID just to prove a point to you people? This business has the rudest, most self serving, people working. They are over priced and understocked. Took my CC class here. Staff is all knowledgeable, friendly & helpful. I frequent the range here it's not temperature controlled so it can get a bit hot but other than that this place is fantastic. Took my CC class here as well when it's time to renew I plan on taking the renewal class here as well. Wide variety of handguns, rifles, shotguns & ammunition. Good variety of holsters & any other accessories you could possibly need. I highly recommend this place for anything weapons related. read more

Honestly, I'm not giving it one star because of the owners/operators or employees. They were actually very polite and respectful, I do appreciate them for that. But the facilities equipment is beyond outdated with rules that do not favor any shooter. Whether they are experienced or a beginner. The range was 97 degrees and extremely humid, the target hanger is a crank operated, you aren't allowed to shoot closer than 30 feet, which if you are training for self defense is beyond the average. Also $20 for a range fee is unacceptable for what you get. I understand the price of ammo, that is a non issue, right now as things are ammo is hard to find. But I would definitely steer absolutely clear from this facility. Other better equipped ranges are a much better option. And they're the same price or LESS. read more

First time I've been here was about 15 years ago and my review since then hasn't changed. I simply have never had any bad experience coming here. I'm actually starting to stop by more now that my wife has taken a liking to shooting and collecting. This place has a warm traditional feel to it. Sorry there is no expresso bar or pool tabels and live music, but its still very welcoming, down to earth and can get busy at times, all sales associates are very knowledgeable and attentive but it's not like your asking for a book to read, these are firearms which entails more one on one time with customers, I guess you just have to be patient and courteous of others. They have tons of options, accessories all over the place and even a selection of collector items. The gun range (on the ground level) serves the purpose for me and its nice. Clean and professional. No complaints there either. Prices are fair in all categories. This place has been around and will continue to be successful based on their core values. True there are other places with "newer" features or extra "perks" with very expensive membership fees...that's fine, but Midwest is classic and in their own league, not to be compared but to be appreciated by their longevity and loyalty to their customers. read more

This place has a huge selection of guns on hand and there gun rental is massive honestly this is my new range.

This range is one of the closest to downtown Chicago and I suspect that's where a lot of their business comes from, but lately I am thinking I should just drive an extra 10-20 minutes to somewhere better. So first, the good: it is close the city, pretty cheap, and has a huge selection of rental guns. For about $70 you can go there and shoot two boxes of 9mm and as many rental guns as you want, which is a competitive price. The rental gun selection is very big and should be helpful to anyone wanting to "try before they buy", or maybe even someone who just wants to have fun with something like a .357 revolver. The website doesn't list what's out for cleaning/repairs, but the really popular guns are actually there in multiples. I've never had the gun I wanted to shoot be unavailable. However, this place does have a lot of drawbacks. First off, the attitude. If you are not experienced with firearms, this is not the place for you. They are not unfriendly or rude in the name of safety, they are just unfriendly and rude for no reason. This makes most visits a real turn-off, especially to someone who might be in need of help. The sales people on the top floor are so-so; a few are quite personable and friendly, the others aren't. I guess I can understand that they get a lot of looky-loos, but you never know if someone will end up buying something. If you plan to visit, and aren't very experienced or knowledgeable, you may want to bring a friend who is. One of the other drawbacks is that the huge rental gun selection has had questionable reliability, in my experience. On my last trip, I had two different guns experience problems. No gun will be 100% reliable, but having a malfunction on two different guns (two magazines each) seems extraordinarily unlikely. Neither malfunction was serious, but they were frustrating. Will I return? Maybe. They're not the only range in the area, and certainly not the only one that has rentals. read more

Total dump, one of the crappiest stores you will ever step into. Not only is it dirty, cramped, and ugly, there's racist bumper stickers and your standard hick paraphernalia all over the place. As for shooting, the range is dark, and the minimum distance is the farther than any other local range. Do not take new shooters here. There's a million hastily printed up signs posted everywhere because it's clear that the one thing this place cares about is itself, not you. Their small range is crowded, wait times can be in the hours at nights and weekends and the people who run this place aren't smart enough to figure out a reservation system where you can call ahead. Oh, and there's a two box limit so basically the maximum you can shoot is 100 rounds. Not worth it for standing around one a filthy store for hours without any place to sit. The guns they sell are overpriced, you can find cheaper on the Internet. In short, if they didn't have a government monopoly on shooting ranges this place would be out of business. read more

So I've been here several times, once to get my Chicago Firearms Permit, once to price out guns and accessories, and a few times to the range. Upstairs in the gun department there are two guys that deserve special mention, Tom and Angel are great, both of them took the time to answer questions for me and make my dealings with Midwest a friendly and non-intimidating experience, can't thank them enough. Downstairs there is the fishing department and the Gun Range. I haven't been fishing in about two years so I'll leave that for someone else to review =) As others have stated the range could use a bit of an update, but honestly I'm more than pleased with the setup because it's cost-efficient. I'd rather pay my 10-20 dollars depending on day/time and have unlimited range time, than pay the 20ish dollars an hour that other ranges are charging per hour. Do hand cranks vs electronic target returns warrant up to $10 the first hour and $20 every hour after that? Inside the range I've met several people, tried out their guns, had nice conversations, and just generally had a good (and safe) time. The Range Safety Officer was nice, he swept up my brass but brushed it straight back so I could reclaim most of it at the end of my session. With range costs this cheap I don't mind losing 10-20% of my brass, especially when I can buy it back on the cheap, (guess they have to make their money somewhere). While I'd love to keep this place secret, I also want them to prosper, so there you have it Yelpers, 5 -stars. Oh by the way I met a nice guy who brought his son along and I had the honor of letting him try out his first .45 acp, we did it in a safe fashion and the RSO paid close attention to us but didn't interfere since we were teaching safety and putting it into practice. I will be checking the "good for kids" box since parents can bring in children age 10 and older and teach them how to shoot and handle a gun in a safe manner with oversight from the RSO. -Dennis read more

I do most of my shooting at Midwest Guns. The range fair, but dank and dirty, and a bit outdated. The staff is polite, but some employees are a bit rough around the edges. If purchased and sold firearms from them in the past, and have always had a smooth transaction. The price they offered me on my firearms was fair. Of course I wanted more, but I do understand they need to make money too. Ammo is a bit overpriced, and the range fees are pricey, but they are the only range in he general area. If you're looking for a no frills range to shoot, in a convenient location, this is it. The dog who walks the floor is also quite friendly. No need to fear him. read more

I stopped going to this store about five years ago. They have some friendly staff members, and a wide selection of guns. This is the best part of the store. Their range is around 25 yards long and it's ok for shooting a pistol or shotgun. The worst part of the store are some of the people that work there. I was talking to a girl behind the counter that reminds me of Annie Oakley. I told her that and that there was a PBS documentary on the life of Annie Oakley out and that she should see it. I also told her that I thought that Oakley was a very attractive woman. ;-) This idiot behind the counter, a jerk I have seen in action before with his crude, blue collar, don't mess with me because I have a gun on my hip attitude, said, "I think she's ugly." He didn't say it in a joking way. It was like he wanted to reprimand me on my viewpoint. His attitude on more than one occasion was enough to keep me from going there. But there's more! I was double tapping targets on their range. Some moose came right up to me, face to face, as if he wanted to fight me while I was holding the gun pointing down range, and said that I was shooting too fast! Tact? Great timing? He could have said, "Hey buddy, can you come here a minute?" I would have walked over and had a chat with him about it peacefully. Who wants to shoot with some bum breathing down your neck for something very minor. My friends in other states rent fully auto weapons at similar ranges and shoot all day. When I tell them of how I was treated at this place, they say, "Harry, I am sorry you live in that sorry state of Illinois. Here in Georgia we can shoot like the devil and no one says $hit." Try other ranges that are more tolerant to double tapping. Double tapping is nothing. I am in my 50's, I have served in the Army and can prove it. I have a 40 hour armed security license so I am no threat to range safety. Yet this range treats people who double tap like we are going to shoot the place up or something. I have no plans to ever shoot at this place again. I would rather drive 20 miles to the other ranges than shoot here and it's a shame, because there are some nice people who work there. TL;DR - A great range with some quirks, a decent showroom at a premium & a good location for much of chicago. MidwestGuns is a great range and well located for folks living in the City. I happen to be in DuPage county but still find the drive over here pretty easy. A bonus is La Grange close by, tons of great restaraunts to go to after hitting the range. Range --------- Range is a bit on the shorter side, I believe it is only 15yds. One rule they have is that you can only shoot at targets in the light, which is at approx 30ft. This is for safety, bullets ricocheting off the target carrier can come back and strike you if the target is too close. I have experienced this at other ranges. This distance isn't ideal for new shooters however, it will take some time with proper technique to get more shots on paper. Although the range looks old, everything is in great working condition. The target mover crank wheel has a nice solid resistance to it and the carrier itself doesn't sag. You can tell this place is maintained. The layout is functional. You first walk into the back room just behind the shooting area, it has windows to look into the stalls & targets. Great for friends/family that want to watch where it is quieter. This room also has coat hooks and a bench. Then there is the range. Stalls can be cozy if you have a friend with you. HVAC is solid, so is soundproofing. In comparison, Rinks range i used to go to was crazy loud, sounds like an explosion after each shot. MG is far quieter, but i still recommend shooters to double up on ear protection, foam inserts + muffs. My favorite aspect is that there is a range officer on deck at all times. Another bonus is that all the staff here are really chill and easy to talk to. Very helpful and will assist new shooters. A great group of guys all around. I also appreciate how well staffed the range is, folks behind the counter and on the range, you can find help when you need it. One thing to note, they have a strict rule about no photography or cell phones. I wish this wasn't the case but it is probably there for liability reasons. The first thing new shooters want to do is take photos, this is a damper on sharing the fun. Other than that targets and ear/eye pro pricing is very fair. Ammo is always something that get's marked up BUT if you buy ammo from them your range fee is nearly cut in half, $12 instead of $20. It makes sense to buy a box from them even if you bring your own. Showroom ------------------ Pretty decent selection, will have most of the popular models. However prices are very high, you will be paying near msrp. Since this store is in cook county, they have to add the gun sale tax of $25 which is unfortunate. I really want to support these guys and buy local but I can save 30+% buy going online. I am a real nooby when it comes to guns. I had a gun safety course when I was a kid and a lot of rifle practice (dad's a marine :) but that was a long time ago. I have wanted to get a gun for a long time but just never got around to it since there were so many things to do. As my kids are getting older now I want to give them the same things that my parents gave me, so I decided to bite the bullet (pun intended) and see what it's all about. When I got there I was a little intimidated because it was so crowded! But I moved up to the counter and waited and pretty soon Angel came over and asked what I was looking for. We talked about pistols, mini, subcompact and full size. They had some on sale and I did end up buying one of those, a glock. I never felt intimidated or stupid when I was talking to Angel. (When I went to Cabellas I felt like an idiot since I didn't know if a S&W 3913 was an automatic or a revolver, sheesh I just wanted to see one in person!) Angel explained everything understandably and when I had to bring my boys in when I picked up my gun, he talked to them and shook their hands and did not make them feel like they shouldn't be there. Not a place for 10 year old boys because of all the paperwork and nothing really fun for them to do, thank god for iPads. I'll go back to Midwest Guns because I really would like to get a gun for concealed carry as well as a couple of 22s for the boys to learn with. As far as I can tell there are about as many preferences as there are guns since everyone in my extended family is carrying a different brand and caliber LOL but at least I know that I have an expert on my side who can tell me the pros and cons of each and which would suit me better personally. Can't beat that. I have not used their shooting range so can't/won't comment. read more

In a world of gun shops where the clerks have major attitudes, this is a shining exception. I have stood behind a gun counter or two, so I do have some sympathy for what any salesman goes through, but these guys always seem to buck-up and greet every situation politely and with a smile. Went here last night for the first time(with the GF) and I have to say it was a very positive experience. For an indoor shooting range in the immediate Chicago area it was surprisingly inexpensive. You can rent a lane all day for the a $20 fee (discounted if you buy purchase merchandise above a certain amount). Their selection of rental guns is INSANELY good--just cases and cases of them (whereas at other places there's often like a list of 20). In my instance I was running a dual comparison between the Glock 19 and Walther PPQ and they had both.The staff was as friendly as you could want (despite some misgivings by other posters here), especially the guy at the downstairs counter who set us up with everything we needed. The ever-present range officer was giving my girlfriend shooting tips which was a nice touch. The range itself? Oh, it's not modern or necessarily that clean but it certainly got the job done. I don't need a pristine environment to shoot weapons in. The hand cranks for the targets I actually kind of liked in that there were no instances of getting halfway out and the thing blows off because the holder is moving too fast. I should also mention that the selection of paper targets was pretty awesome which seems trivial but when you're trying to track where you're hitting it's nice to have different colors/sizes/options. Supposedly the closest target position is 30-36 feet minimum which some people thought was too far but as a newer shooter I certainly didn't notice--in fact, I was drilling around 80+% of my shots into the center box so it clearly wasn't too far for a newer shooter. We'll certainly be back and soon. Doesn't seem like there's a lot of lanes so keep that in mind when planning a trip (i.e., primetime probably fills up quickly). Yeah it's grungy and older but who cares--I had a great shooting experience there. read more

Took the conceal and carry class this past weekend. The class was great, more than I thought I wanted to know. It was obvious the instructor knew his stuff and did a great job interjecting humorous videos with instruction. He answered every question the class had. My only gripe were the negative comments about public officials and discussing racially charged current events. I do understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but when you're in a position of authority, which as the instructor you are, It's not the right time to project your beliefs. read more

So overall Midwest is great for the price. Took the 16hr CCW class, it was a very lean class. Hit all of the requirements and your out of there. Made all of the paperwork effortless. Range was a little dark and the stalls a little tight but overall a nice place. Staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. read more

If you're new to the gun scene like me and my girlfriend and are looking to buy your first gun, do yourself a favor and go talk to Tom. He was incredibly helpful and informative and didn't pressure us to buy a gun on the spot. He took 30+ minutes to walk us through the pro's and con's of several different guns and then suggested we go shoot a few before buying to ensure we were getting something we liked. Tom mentioned his 35+ years in law enforcement as well as a few personal anecdotes about guns and how/why he has developed certain preferences. I can't believe all these reviews didn't mention all the great fishing tackle that they have downstairs! lol All kidding aside, Midwest Guns is one of the few places you can shoot in the Chicagoland area that is relatively close to the city itself. As with any range/gun store in the are there are positives and negatives. Overall its an ok place to shoot and a good place to browse the merchandise. Positives: - Close to the city, Right off I-55 and 1st ave - Large selection of new and used firearms, and accessories. Includes handguns, rifles, shotguns. Many glass cases full of goodies - Climate controlled range (unlike IL Gunworks' sweatbox) - Usually friendly staff (a few are rough around the edges) - $10 range fee on Fridays, $12 range fee if you buy their ammo - Spotting scopes on couple lanes (good for sighting your rifles) - Tons of rentals starting at $12 for Multiple Guns! - Allows a guest to accompany as long as one person has a FOID Negatives: - Range needs a major update (crank wheels, poor lighting, flimsy benches). - $20 range fee (although all day fee) - 36ft minimum shooting distance. Not user friendly for beginning shooters. - Rangemaster is always over your shoulder. Good because there's a lot of questionable characters that are in there but no so good when your shooting and he's trying to sweep your brass away. - Your only allowed to keep your brass which is fine but the range master is always sweeping yours up! Good thing I don't care about reloading. - There's a dog that walks around the upstairs showroom. I don't care about the dog but my allergies always kicks in. - Sloppy store in general. It appears no one has ever worked retail before at this store because displays are always sloppy, the behind the counter area looks like a nightmare, if it's not in a case its disorganized half the time. read more

What they charged for their sales fee and the repair fee, they took most of the money for the sale of the firearm. I am now the proud owner of a shotgun! In a million years I never thought that I would utter (write) those words. But in a million years I never thought that things would have turned out as they have, and I find more and more lately that this is not the world I hoped it would be....that's a subject for a therapist though.... What can I say. I've been to all of two gun shops in my life, so take this review for what it's worth. I've been thinking about getting a shotgun for about a year now, and finally, last Saturday, I dragged my partner way the heck to BFE to check out a few guns. Midwest was our first stop, and the younger gentleman who helped us spent more than an hour with us, showing us different models, discussing pros and cons of various gauges, letting me pick up different types of long guns, etc. He knew I was a gun "virgin" and really went above and beyond the call of duty, especially since he knew we were not planning on making a purchase that day. I left feeling a little more knowledgeable about a subject that I previously knew nothing about. That same day we went to Chuck's Gun Shop in Riverdale. Although the older gentlemen (Chuck?) who helped us was nice enough, he absolutely refused to look at me the whole time we were there. This was despite the fact that I was the only one with a FOID card, and I was the one asking all the questions. It was the strangest thing. I mean, he literally would not even glance my way. Every time I asked a question, he turned to my partner and talked to him. Truthfully, I don't think he meant to be rude, so I didn't take it personally, but it was unsettling, and I knew within 5 minutes that I would be buying from Midwest instead. In short, I had the opportunity to deal with 4 separate people from Midwest between our first visit, my second visit Monday to actually purchase my weapon (A slightly used Mossberg 500 12 gauge for $200), and again today to pick it up after registering it at CPD headquarters. All were nice, professional, patient, and knowledgeable. I wouldn't hesitate to buy anything I need in the way of weaponry (lol!) from them. Not being a gun enthusiast, and honestly, not having concerned myself too much with getting the absolute best possible price, I can't speak to how a more sophisticated buyer would rate stock, prices, etc. But for other gun virgins like myself, I imagine you would feel very comfortable. I should add that you can't use shotguns in their indoor range anymore, and I would have preferred to be able to fire a similar model before making my purchase, but them's the breaks. From what I understand, there is a shooting range in Northbrook, so I'll have to head out there for firearms training classes. read more

I bough a Glock 17 from Midwest last July and it was a pleasant experience. I took my wife there last week to get her a Glock. Once again, it was a pleasant experience. We were taken care of by Angel. He is an absolute credit to Midwest, knowledgeable, professional and friendly. With fears of impending federal draconian gun regulations, the store was packed with customers. Rifles were flying off the shelves. Angel showed us some of the remaining rifles, answered our questions and made recommendations. I bought a new Del-Ton AR-15. My wife got a used Daewoo Max II (a Korean AK). Everything went smoothly working with Angel. My wife and I wholeheartedly recommend Midwest Guns. The entire staff is great and Angel is a cut above. read more
