a plate of breakfast food

The service was the best part of Midway Cafe and I'm thankful for the friendly staff, but I wish we'd gone elsewhere for breakfast. The food was disappointing. The hash browns in particular were underdone, cold and wet in the middle. The omelet was big and filled with meats and vegetables, as advertised, but nothing was seasoned, so it tasted very blah. The dining room was full, so maybe my taste is off, but when I'm back in Bartlesville I'll be getting my breakfast someplace else.

Today we were exploring Bartlesville and decided to give this place a try. It's a cute little diner with a very polite staff. We were greeting when we arrived and told to sit wherever we like. Tony, our server, was extremely kind and attentive. There were some locals eating, I like to find local hot-spots, and the atmosphere was light and cheery. My husband ordered breakfast, served day. He had the ham and cheeses omelette with biscuits and gravy, and a pancake. His eggs were cooked perfectly, fluffy and moist. He really liked the flavor of the ham and it was topped with shredded cheese, not a processed slice you see at most places. The biscuits and gravy looked and tasted fresh. He wasn't a fan of the pancake but said it was a personal preference, just a little overdone for his liking. I ordered the meatloaf, mashed potatoes with brown gravy (you have a choice of brown or white), and green beans. The meatloaf was well seasoned and was a big portion. The potatoes were instant but I don't have issues with that, you can add love to instant potatoes- which they did- and they are perfectly fine. The brown gravy was very flavorful and the right consistency. The green bean came with cooked onions in them, I don't like cooked onions but they added a nice flavor. After eating we went outside to look around. It looks like at one time there was a nice outside eating area, maybe they'll bring that back one day. All-in-all this is a great place to stop for a meal. We were filled up and no stomach issues down the road- that's a plus!

Inside, nicely decorated. The railroad motif matched the building. Halloween decorations were strung from the ceiling. Good timing for us. The café cleared out quickly. These ranchers had to get back to work. The kitchen staff is fast; we had food in just a few minutes. My usual. My wife had pancakes and an egg. Very good food, good coffee. The building is a genuine old train depot within a few inches of an active rail way line. While I was enjoying my bacon and eggs, all that I could think of was a derailment. A frickin' big devastating derailment; like you see on the national news. What if? Could we get out of the building quickly enough if we had to? And then it started. At first a low-pitched rumble. A little vibration felt in the floor. Ripples appear in my coffee cup, Then the ear-splitting train horn, a warning of your last chance to clear the track. That train had to be rolling at 60 miles an hour. The windows on the track side of the depot were covered. You couldn't see the train. Only the flash of the sun between each car as it screamed by. Each rail car had its own signature sound. Some smooth, and then an occasional skreich form a worn wheel bearing or locked brake. That's the sound that worries me. The clatter lasted a few minutes, faded, and vanished. Quiet again. Café sounds return. Tableware clanking together and plates rattling as the tables were being cleared. (Check the video and turn the sound all the way up.) That was pretty darn neat! A real railroad depot café, that features an actual train rumbling past while you enjoy the food. Disney World can't beat this. You have to try the Nowata Depot Café. Call ahead to get the schedule for the next arriving train.

The Crescent Café was not our destination this Monday. We were headed to the Brown Cow Diner. An empty parking lot greeted us, they are closed on Mondays. We turned around had headed back to Highway 75 to implement plan "B." My wife spotted the Crescent Café's open sign on the corner of Rogers Blvd and Osage. Another U-turn, a parking spot was waiting for us just outside the café's door on South Osage. A few steps to the front door, we are in a comfortable booth, menu in hand and drinks on the way. The local fire fighters were already in the restaurant enjoying hearty breakfasts. The café has a big menu with any combination of breakfast or breakfast item you can think of. I ordered my breakfast, 2 eggs sunny side up, bacon and hashbrowns, both crisp with a biscuit and gravy on the side. It took me a while to find it on the menu. It is called Something Lighter, if you can believe that. My wife went with what I call a salad omelet. Fresh spinach, bell pepper, onion, mushroom, tomato and cheese cooked up in three fluffy eggs, perfect hashbrowns and a biscuit and gravy on the side. These were two wonderful breakfasts cooked up exactly as ordered. Wonderful food, fast friendly service, in a clean comfortable restaurant and Fire Fighter Approved!

Don't salads normally come with cherry or grape tomatoes that don't require a knife to cut them up? Or at least a tomato that has been cut into wedges or small pieces?? We had to cut the big tomato slices up before we could eat them. Try cutting thick tomato slices that are laying up on a bed of chunky iceberg lettuce. It's not easy. There were a few pieces of purple cabbage and some shredded carrots. That's it, that's all. No mixed greens of any kind. ICEBERG LETTUCE. A spring mix would be nice for salads, maybe some green leaf lettuce or some red leaf lettuce. For $12 maybe we could get a few spinach leaves? There was ONE hard boiled egg, cut in half. Closing out this horror show was a palm full of rancid (yes, rancid) fried bacon pieces and another few bites of a fatty ham. The ranch dressing was a watered down version of "Ranch". It is NOT the ranch dressing that you hope for that looks like and tastes like RANCH. We managed to eat about half and simply tossed the remaining. We highly recommend you never order this monstrosity of a plain, simple SALAD. You'll be sorely disappointed if you've ever had a REAL salad with lots of healthy greens, ripe cherry tomatoes and quality ham/bacon/hard-boiled egg toppings. We paid $25 for the pleasure of this experience. We will never set foot in Crescent Cafe again. First impressions are important and this first impression missed the mark by a mile.
