The four friendly young ladies working this morning kept things on the tracks and on schedule. When we pulled up, every farm truck in the county was parked out front. Inside, nicely decorated. The railroad motif matched the building. Halloween decorations were strung from the ceiling. Good timing for us. The café cleared out quickly. These ranchers had to get back to work. The kitchen staff is fast; we had food in just a few minutes. My usual. My wife had pancakes and an egg. Very good food, good coffee. The building is a genuine old train depot within a few inches of an active rail way line. While I was enjoying my bacon and eggs, all that I could think of was a derailment. A frickin' big devastating derailment; like you see on the national news. What if? Could we get out of the building quickly enough if we had to? And then it started. At first a low-pitched rumble. A little vibration felt in the floor. Ripples appear in my coffee cup, Then the ear-splitting train horn, a warning of your last chance to clear the track. That train had to be rolling at 60 miles an hour. The windows on the track side of the depot were covered. You couldn't see the train. Only the flash of the sun between each car as it screamed by. Each rail car had its own signature sound. Some smooth, and then an occasional skreich form a worn wheel bearing or locked brake. That's the sound that worries me. The clatter lasted a few minutes, faded, and vanished. Quiet again. Café sounds return. Tableware clanking together and plates rattling as the tables were being cleared. (Check the video and turn the sound all the way up.) That was pretty darn neat! A real railroad depot café, that features an actual train rumbling past while you enjoy the food. Disney World can't beat this. You have to try the Nowata Depot Café. Call ahead to get the schedule for the next arriving train. read more

A very good meal. There were four of us and we all enjoyed our food. The rolls were fantastic. Took home cinnamon rolls for breakfast in the morning and a piece of pie for a late evening snack. Our server was very friendly and made a great suggestion on the rolls m. A train ran by while we were dining so it made a more realistic event. You may want to find the train schedule and advertise so more people can have the thrill. read more

While meeting up with some family from Kansas, we picked Nowata as the halfway point, and the Depot specifically. I'd been there several years back, and remembered it as having pretty good food. Tonight saw myself, The Wife and The Kid making the short drive from Owasso to meet up with family. We arrived around 7pm, knowing they have an 8pm closing time, but figuring we'll be okay time-wise. And we were. The location... is in an old train depot building, hence the name. Nicely decorated with the requisite amount of train kitsch. Airy, roomy, and cozy all at the same time. For an old building, they've done a good job on maintaining and appointing it. The Kid had... you guessed it... chicken fingers and fries. She's consistent, I'll give her that. The Wife had a pulled pork special, while I... being ever as consistent as The Kid, went with the Chicken Fried Steak, mashed potatoes and green beans.... ever the hallmark of diner's across the country. We also opted for a starter of fried mushrooms and onion rings. First the apps... the onion rings were spot on. Lightly breaded, very flavorful and cooked perfectly. Every onion ring on the planet should be as good as these. The mushrooms were huge, perfectly breaded and cooked expertly. Nice and firm, and still brimming with juicy goodness. And as if this wasn't a little basket full of heaven, the dipping sauces were just too much. A GREAT ranch dip, and a sweet garlicy sauce. Not sure if these are house made or not, but either way, they were stellar. The Kid's chicken fingers were also perfect in every way. Flavorful crunchy and well seasoned, the chicken was tender and moist. The fries cooked perfectly with a slight crunch on the inside and moist steaminess on the inside. The Wife's pulled pork was served with sauce on the side, with her choice of mashed potatoes covered with brown gravy and green beans. The pork was flavorful, moist and tender. Not sure if it was a true 'pulled pork' in the traditional sense, as I didn't get an overwhelming smoky flavor, but either way, it was pretty darn good. My CFS was probably one of the better ones I've had recently. For something as basic as a CFS, it's amazing how many places can't make one worth a flip. Not so in this case. This was well portioned, tender and full of flavor. The meat and breading both stood toe to toe with each other on flavor profiles, and both came out on top. All to often the meat in a CFS gets lost in salty breading and heavy gravy, but not this time. Again, one of the better CFS's I've had in a long time. The potatoes were well textured and packed with flavor. The green beans.... I could face plant in a bowl of those with no shame whatsoever. Slow cooked beans at their best. Seriously.Good.Beans. We were also given a basket with texas toast, a dinner roll and a generous slice of a really good cornbread. The cornbread would have been wonderful had it been fresh and hot, but even just warm, it was really good, with a great texture and flavor Add to that a coupe of saucer sized cinnamon rolls to go, and it was a great dining experience. The servers more than accomodated out ad hoc group, even though we were still wrapping up some business while they were closing. Nice bunch of people to tolerate us like that. Well worth the trip from Tulsa or Owasso. Great, great place to eat. read more

We've eaten here several times. Every time before we were pleasantly surprised. Each time the food was delicious. Nothing fancy, just good food and service. This time my burger was great, juicy, great taste, big patty, all good. The onion rings were ok, don't quite know if it was the batter or if not cooked quite enough, or the onion. They had no flavor. The fish was as good as you can ask for being farm raised, but the batter/flour missed it. Either use cornmeal or the onion ring batter, but not whatever was on them. The fries tasted fresh. Also, the price for 4 onion rings was a bit high at $2.49. That's .62 per ring. Otherwise it was a normal meal. Some good a little not so. read more

Surprisingly the service wasn't good. Small town Oklahoma should be the friendliest place of all and my girl was curt. Good prices. Chicken fried steak was tender and a real steak not cubes compressed meat. Gravy could use more seasoning. Fried okra very fresh tasting. Pinto beans not as soupy as hubby likes them but good. Cornbread real good as was Texas toast. Iced tea great brew flavor. We will be back. Too full to try the desserts but friends have said they're really good. Maybe next time. read more

Favorite place in Nowata to get some regular food. Their menu offers a variety of classics such as chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, and a grilled sirloin to name a few. Since I work for the railroad we go by here all the time. Enjoy ordering breakfast and picking it up if we're going to be held outside of town for a while. The food is always good and I highly recommended the breakfast burritos. I thought they would be big but they were kind of like little egg rolls and the price was very good and you could probably order about three or four of them at a time. read more

Food was good, but service not so good. Waitress chewed her fingernails at least a half dozen times before we even got a menu. After giving our order, I asked the waitress to wash her hands since she had chewed her nails at least a half dozen times before we even got a menu. That is just plain nasty and spreads germs. Not to mention the nasty fly strip hanging above the cash register and shooing flies all through our meal. Service went downhill after that. She went to the restroom briefly, not really time enough to properly wash hands. She then spoke with another diner there who was obviously a friend, looked at us, then laughed. Obviously, we were the but of some not so nice comments. Ultimately bringing our food to our table wearing plastic gloves. Nice touch, real nice. It is in the health codes that any time a food service worker touches their hair, face, nose or mouth, hands should be washed. Would like to have had some pie as it looked delicious, but our waitress never came back to check on us. We won't be back, even though the food was good. read more
