Note to readers: I'm not usually one to leave negative reviews -- I believe everyone should be given a chance -- but given my experience, I felt this was necessary. I have been a patient at this office for OVER 15 YEARS, but after my recent experience, I will happily NOT be returning. _________________________________________________________________________ Scheduling Issues & Lack of Communication I scheduled appointments for myself and four family members, and the staff originally agreed to accommodate us after I explained our scheduling challenges. We completed all intake forms ahead of time. The confirmation emails showed our appointments spread out across the afternoon, which allowed us to balance coverage for our businesses. [See attached images for receipts & proof of this.] However, when I arrived for my appointment, I was told our times had been condensed into just two slots -- something I was never notified about. I received no email, no text, no phone call informing me of this change, despite having multiple conversations with staff in the days leading up to the appointment. _________________________________________________________________________ Blame Placed on the Patient When I questioned this, the receptionist and office manager not only gave me inconsistent explanations but also tried to place the blame on me for "miscommunication." I showed them the email confirmations proving our original appointment times, yet they continued to insist it was my fault. To make matters worse, they told me we would be charged $50 per person ($250 total) for missed appointments -- appointments that were never properly communicated as changed in the first place. _________________________________________________________________________ Rude and Unprofessional Staff The receptionist I checked in with was rude from the start, barely letting me explain the situation. She even admitted, "I don't know what happened or what was said," yet still cut me off as I tried to clarify. At one point, staff told me they weren't familiar with their own website or appointment platform -- concerning, since that's one of their primary job duties. I had to walk them through their own website to show how appointment slots are structured. Their platform clearly lists 20-minute increments for exams, yet I was suddenly told that appointments were actually an hour long per patient. None of this was stated on their website, creating even more confusion. When I explained that my family and I own several businesses and that this mismanagement caused us major scheduling difficulties, their response was: "Well, you know, we're a small business too, so it's hard enough for us to deal with situations like this." That comment was unprofessional and dismissive -- especially considering this entire issue stemmed from their lack of communication, not ours. _________________________________________________________________________ Refusal to Speak with the Doctor / Staff Reaction When I asked if I could speak directly with the doctor, I was told no. I even said I would simply wait until I saw him in the exam room to discuss it, but they still said no -- without even consulting him. Even more telling: the staff adamantly and very clearly stated five separate times that I would be charged for all appointments, even though they had been mismanaged and hadn't actually occurred. It was only when my father mentioned that we would leave a Yelp review that they suddenly allowed the cancellation of our appointments and dismissed us as patients -- clearly because they knew they were in the wrong, yet they still refused to admit it. This shows that the staff are more concerned with avoiding a bad Yelp review than actually treating their patients with fairness, respect, or professionalism. After over 40 minutes of back-and-forth, this was how the office "resolved" the situation. _________________________________________________________________________ Final Takeaway Don't let the good reviews fool you. While Dr. Lee may have been professional in the past, he did not address us at all during this issue, and his front office staff and office manager were incredibly rude and dismissive. The lack of transparency, accountability, and professionalism here is unacceptable. A simple notification about the schedule change could have prevented all of this. Patients deserve CLEAR communication, honesty, and respect -- but this office failed on all three. No matter how long you've been a patient, their LACK of professionalism, accountability, and transparency can make you feel like you don't matter. I also believe no patient should be punished with fees when it was the office's mistake to begin with. I was in search of a new optometry office and I'm so glad I came across this place on Yelp. It is ran by husband and wife and is very family oriented. I made an appt for myself and my daughters. Checking in was smooth and the wait was not long. All the employees are very nice, helpful, and professional. Not a rude person in sight, I also love the music they play in the office. We were all seen by Dr. Derron Lee, such a nice guy! My girls and I love the decor in his exam room too, Super Nintendo and Marvel! He made us feel at ease and also love the animation he played for me to give me a visual of what may be happening with my eyes. They also have an arcade room! How cool is that?! If there was an option for more than 5 stars then I would have put several more. Midtown is an exceptional practice with incredible staff and an informative and friendly doctor. I had a consultation with Dr.Lee today, after being told my eye sight was fine for years by other optometrists. Dr.Lee confirmed that my eyesight was not in fact "fine" and explained to me throughly what was wrong and what can be done to resolve the issue. His use of informative videos, annotated analysis, and physical examples allowed me to understand the things that most optometrists would usually just say and expect me to know. It's hard to find a good anything nowadays especially in Stockton but Midtown Optometry is hands down the best optometry office I've been to. Right when I walked through the door, I was welcomed and asked how can they help me today. That's honestly one thing I liked about this office because other places I usually have to flag someone down to help me. The staffs that has helped me were really nice and explained the process of each test. I usually just want to go in and out of appointments because Im a big introvert but talking to everyone was like talking to someone ive known for awhile. Dr. Lee's pretty dope too! They have all the greatest arcade games and room looks and feels like you are at an actual arcade. But the best part is you can play for FREE! No quarters or tokens needed here! The exam rooms are also the Amazing! They are all themed differently from Star Wars to Marvel to Lego themed. This is not your ordinary eye doctor. Dr Lee is such a cool and chill guy. He is very thorough with your eye exam and he always makes sure he addresses any questions or concerns. I had texted the night before of my eye issue I had. Described of feeling dry eye with discomfort. I got offered same day appointment the next morning which was great! Turns out I have an infection. Dr. Lee was so great with me, always have laughs when I see him and love his staff Jocelyn and Sahara who was very nice and provided me a pair of contact lens to give me when I told them I had ran out of contact lens. Doctor is fantastic, been going to him for years. However staff not so helpful, fails at communication. i have called at 7 times to get a preauthorization sent to my insurance for eye drops, and every time i talked to someone i was told it would be passed to the person in charge and i would get a call back with an update. i received nothing no call or text. On 2 separate occasions i did inform the office that they can all and do a verbal authorization for faster processing , and again i was told it would be passed along. I also did ask the office that if i needed to come in for a visit so i can get this preauthorization done and i was told no no need for that we will send over.
